Kerala Restaurant, previously known as Savoy's Health Café, is tucked away in a plaza directly north of Southgate Mall. Look for a continuous stream of cars lined up, waiting to get their Tim Horton's fix. Kerala has been open for a few months now and specialize in south Indian food, which seems harder to find compared to their northern counterpart. I'm trying to recall how they came up on my food radar but I'm drawing blanks. J and I decided to check them out on a late Sunday afternoon. We came around 2:30pm so obviously the place wasn't too busy but there were a couple of patrons inside. The interior is nothing fancy but it is simple and homey. Not sure why Kerala claims this to be their "special" menu. LOL. Dosas appear to be one of their speciality items here as several tables were ordering them for lunch. I've had dosas several times and wanted to try a couple other things on their menu so we skipped out this time. A couple curries along with quite a few breads I've never had or heard of before, kothu paratha and chaats (savoury snacks). Chaats are street food snacks - wish we had tried a few of these instead as I'm a sucker for anything originating from street stalls. Biriyani and thali round things out. Their fresh cocktail juices are a perfect way to get your dose of healthiness in - Goat biryani ($11.49) - made Kozhikodan style, baked basmati rice layered with spices and topped with cashew, raisins, deep fried onion and served with hot pickle and raitha. This biryani was pretty similar to what we had when we went to Chutney. Simple but the goat was tasty. I liked the combination of cashews and raisins which gave the rice some sweetness and crunchy texture. - Mushroom masala ($8.99) - we decided to try one of their vegetables curries and opted for their mushroom masala. I love all things mushroom but the flavour here was pretty one dimensional. Serving portion was also on the small side. - Appam ($1.25) - we decided to try a couple of their breads although they were out of a few that I've never had before. The appam was the best out of three but quite plain. Odd that there was no sauce or condiment to accompany any of the breads so we resorted to using the curry as a dip. Couldn't help but compare them to Sambol's amazing hoppers (which is like appam's cousin in Sri Lankan). - Kerala parotha ($1.50) - the kerala parotha is a layered flatbread. Think of it as an Indian style roti canai without that amazing Malaysian deliciousness. It was somewhat flaky but lacked any real flavour. - Chapati ($1.00) - the chapatti is unleavened flatbread. Apparently, this one is like regular roti. I wasn't a fan. Skip it. - Sweet lassi ($4.00) and Energizer ($4.00) - I was intrigued by their sweet and salty lassi's, both of which I've never had. I decided to go with the former and for me, it pretty much tasted like a sweet yogurt drink. Refreshing and light but mango lassi is tastier in my books. J ordered The Energizer which is made up of carrots, apple, orange, beet and ginger and claims to reduce fatigue, circulatory weakness, cholesterol and blood pressure. I had a sip and you can tell it's fresh. If you've ever juiced your own drinks, you'll know what I'm talking about. Overall, everything was decent but perhaps we would have had a better meal if we had stuck to their dosas or focused on some of their speciality savoury snacks. If you're looking for Indian food that is light and healthy, Kerala is worth a shot. Plus, it's a stone throw's away from Southgate so perfect for a before or after shopping meal. read more

Great casual dinning spot. Nothing fancy with the space but the food is perfection. Had the fish pakora and the palak paneer dosa, both fabulous. The fish was incredibly moist and the pakora batter had a great mix of flavour. Incredibly light. The dosa and the paneer were delicious, and the flavour of the spinach was not cooked out. Overall perfect lunch experience. Restraint was clean and tidy, and the food came out really quickly. read more

What a great spot! This restaurant features many traditional dishes which are all divine. My favourite dish is their masala dosa, it comes with different sauces to dip in. It is spicy and delicious. Their curries will knock your socks off so if you don't like spicy food this place may not be for you. The only downside to this eatery is the dining room itself is very small and strangely laid out, plus they don't play any music which is kinda odd. But overall nice experience and lovely food! read more

Tiny little place near Southgate Mall. The food was good although I chose to try ulthappam, a rice flour and lentil pancake type thing and wasn't blown away, and despite the menu description saying "pancakes" plural, it was just one. Still, the fish pakora was nice and my companion enjoyed his curry. This isn't a fancy date type place, it's a tiny single room that felt like sitting in someone's house. The room was so small and quiet that it felt as if everyone could hear every single word we said; not a place for private conversations. It'd be worth trying some of the other dishes if I'm in the area I think, but I probably won't go out of my way to visit again. read more

So much food!!! OMG I was craving a delicious dosa the other day and on the recommendation of a friend we went here. WOW did it ever hit the spot. Edmonton needs more cheap tasty southern Indian restaurants like this. In Delhi south Indian food is cheap, fast and delicious. In Edmonton we are stuck with the same northern Indian food in all the popular Indian restaurants. That and since my mother in law is from Punjab I know how to cook northern food at home. Only downside is that it is not licensed but who really cares when the food is so tasty. read more

Good place for a quick Thali which is a meal with rice, roti and an assortment of vegetables. Their porottas (flour bread) are one of the fluffiest I have seen. Great place to try out some South Indian cuisine. The couple of times I have been there for dinner it's been empty. I was told they are more of a lunch place and a lot of people order food to go. read more

Soo good! Their Gobi appetizer is unreal, best I've ever had anywhere. We went for a big feast of dhosas and Chana masala along with a variety of breads. Their fresh juice was exactly what we needed when we arrived. Ate too much, too hard to stop when it tastes that good. Lots of love in that little room. Just go. Bring your friends. read more

This was one of the best resturants I have went to. There best dish is for sure the Butter Chicken Masala Dosa and Paneer Masala Dosa. It was outstanding and delicious. The taste still hangs in my mouth. Also there shrimp Bamboo Briyani was super as well. It gives as a blendful taste of a biryani. The dish that I want to try next time is there Shrimp puttu. I went with my teenaged son, he loves Dosas, and being a teen, eats more than most families. I was thrilled that the portions were generous. I would have been disappointed if the food had not also been delicious. The mix of flavours was well balanced, and spicy enough to be interesting but not intimidating. I love dosas, and these did not disappoint, they were light with just enough crispiness to the outside to delight me. The prices were very reasonable. read more

I had no issues with the food, it was pretty good. My friend and I ordered dosa, which we both devoured, as well as a meat dish. I am taking away a star completely based on the atmosphere of the restaurant. There was no music playing, I heard a cat meowing in the kitchen, the table and chairs were wobbly, and the waitress did not say "hello" to us when we walked in and would only speak to my male friend. It was good, but I think I'd prefer to drive a little more central for some other South Indian food. read more

We had a thali and a beef kozhikodal biryani for lunch. There was not much of a wait to get the food. It was authentic and delicious kerala food! The portion size was huge and the price was very reasonable. I can't wait to try the dosa next time! Would highly recommend this restaurant! read more

We tried this neighborhood restaurant for the first time and it exceeded our expectations. We ordered Gobi 65, mutton biriyani, and a vegetable curry. It was all delicious and the servings generous. Service was prompt and friendly. We will definitely be back. read more

I went for lunch on a Sunday. I had the Onion Dosa while my companion had the Uthappam. We also had Gobi Manchurian and Gulab Jamun. The food was bad. They's forgotten to add any salt to the batter for the dosa and uthappam and they tasted suspiciously like they'd been made from a powdered mix. The white chutney and green chutney were inedible. The sambar was so-so. The Gobi Manchurian, which was specifically described as "dry" in the menu, wasn't actually so. It had more onion than cauliflower and tasted average. The gulab jamuns were good, but their perfect and identical spherical shapes makes me think store-bought. The music was too loud. The service was good. Overall, not a place I'd go back to. read more

The 2 pillars of a successful restaurant are good food and great customer service. Kerala gets the "food" part right most of the time but they have long ways to go in the customer service area. I've been to the restaurant a few times and have noticed the quality of their dosas are inconsistent. You cannot rely on a previous good experience with food and expect the same on subsequent visits. I know that their serving staff keep changing a lot, but now I am starting to think they can't keep their cooks as well. I ended up with a poorly executed take out order - under cooked pieces of chicken 65, dosa missing sambhar and chutney, and goat biriyani when I ordered goat kothu parota. To top it all, the owner was pretty rude over phone and did not apologize for messing up the order. Instead his attitude was - I don't care of I lose one customer. I am never returning back again!
