If you want dosa, this is the place to get it from, especially if you're in the west end. I had a masala dosa (filled with potato, served with three vegetarian dips), and it was delicious. The dosa itself was chewy and slightly sour, as it should be. Dosas are made with lentil and rice flour that is slightly fermented. The dips were slightly spicy, and included coconut, tomato, and mint. The dosa was quite large, and only about $11. I had my meal by delivery, and I am already looking forward to my next one. read more

I do not have a great deal of experience with South Indian cuisine, but I have sampled it a few times and have developed a taste for Dosas, a crispy rice and lentil bread/crepe served with a variety of dips and a central stuffing or sauce. Having planned a dinner with my sister and her beau, Dosas entered to the conversations, and we decided to try Chettinad Aachy's, which we had both noticed, but not tried. We are very glad we did... The restaurant is not fancy, but the overall atmosphere is warm and friendly, as is the staff. It definitely has the feel of a family run operation, which extends to the service, which is charming, if perhaps a tad clumsy. You may have to ask for little items that would be taken for granted in other places, like extra cutlery, or napkins, and waiters may have to be reminded about little things, but the smiles and the effort are genuine. We may also have caught them on a bad night, as there was one table with a group of about 30 people, and they were like an attention vortex for the whole restaurant. We ordered a couple of appetisers, an order of 65 Chicken and Vegetable Pakora, which were both superb. The 65 Chicken was deliciously spicy, tender and succulent, and the vegetable Pakora was different than I have seen before. More shredded than in clusters, and served with a savoury mango sauce that was heavenly. It was more lightly breaded than I am used to, and I liked it very much. We each ordered a Dosa, Chettinand Chicken Curry for me, Chettinand Mutton Curry for Sis, and the Beau had the Chicken Tikka Masala. The Dosas arrived on huge trays with 3 dips and one bowl of the main sauce, the Beaus was stuffed with the chicken. The other two had the meat in the bowls with the sauce, likely because of the bones. We tore at the Dosa with our hands and dipped with abandon. This is the ultimate finger food. The Sauces were wonderfully spicy. These dishes are not toned down for Western palates, there is some heat here. The meat was tender and juicy and beautifully seasoned. The mutton is the real deal. Not lamb, but real mutton, and if I am not mistaken it is Halal. There is a distinct flavour to real mutton that is unique. I did not taste the Chicken Masala, but the Beau spoke very highly of it and finished his plate before anyone else. With beverages, dinner for three came to $72.00 before tip. Very reasonable, and I would count it as one of the best Indian meals I have eaten in some time. I will definitely be back here again soon. Four stars because I think the service still needs tuning up, and it is a first visit, but I can see Chettinad Aachy's becoming a favourite haunt for me. The people are very nice, and the food is simply amazing. If you like South Indian food, you HAVE to try this restaurant. read more

Chettinad Aachy's is a wonderful and unique new Indian restaurant, offering a cozy atmosphere and rich, flavourful, authentic flavours from South India. The new establishment boasts a huge and varied new menu as a new Sunday lunch buffet which is perfect for trying the myriad delicious dishes offered by this little gem. The size of the menu at Chettinad Aachy's is staggering and the establishment features a wide range of curries, baked dishes, and appetizers. The real standouts on the menu are the unique and delicious breads paired with all kinds of tasty sauces. In addition to the tasty naan you can expect at most Indian restaurants, Chettinad Aachy's offers some South Indian specialties such as parotta (a thin, flaky pancake-esque dish), appam (a thicker sourdough-like pancake), and dosa (a crispy rice and lentil crepe). The dosa is amongst the best I've ever had and is a cornerstone of this establishment as they offer dozens of different stuffings for the unique South Indian staple. The appetizers are equally varied and delicious with vada being my absolute favourite. Vada is a savoury donut-like vegetable fritter with an amazing amount of flavour. This treat alone has me yearning to visit the restaurant again. I was fortunate enough to drop by Chettinad Aachy's during their Sunday lunch buffet which was a perfect way to taste a number of their breads and curries. The wide-ranging vegetarian options ensured I had a great amount of selection as I left stuffed full of the aforementioned breads and treats alongside some tasty vegetable korma, paneer butter masala, and chettinad mushrooms. This last dish in particular had a robust, smoky flavour with just the right amount of spice. The establishment was very busy on my trip there and the service tried their best to keep up with the number of hungry people in the restaurant. We waited a little while to get some dosa and a few dishes in the buffet were running low but overall the service was satisfactory and while the restaurant won't top any lists for ambience, it offered a cozy family-friendly environment nonetheless. Overall this great South Indian restaurant offers an absolute ton of unique and delicious dishes and I can't wait to visit again to load up on more vada and dosa. read more

I generally don't review restaurants, but will make an exception for Aachy's! I stumbled upon the restaurant thru skip, when I lived in the area a few years ago. I am often hesitant ordering Indian food, as per my high expectations -- I was so impressed with the food here. I later decided to dine in, after craving their food. I was so happy with the hospitality and kind service. Years later, the quality is still consistent! Great tasting South Indian food. Delicious dosas and a spice level that isn't disappointing. Everything is generously seasoned, naan is fresh and the coconut rice is fragrant and tasty. Try the Chettinad Chicken (if you can handle a mild bit of spice), and the paneer butter masala with some garlic naan. My favourites! Ohhhh my. This place is *perfect*. We had the butter chicken, aloo gobi, coconut rice, and a variety of naan. I have not reviewed this place yet?!? Why haven't I? Maybe I am too scared of people finding out how delicious it is. I have been stopping in to eat, ordering to-go, and coming in for their wonderful Sunday buffet ever since they opened. The Sunday buffet is superb! Come really hungry because you'll need all the room you can get to try the huge variety that they have laid out. Breads, curries and desserts too. My husband and I always find something we haven't seen or tried before that becomes a new favourite. One thing that they do well is the mutton. It really is mutton. You have to try it because it does have a different taste to it but they cook it deliciously. Their dosas are wonderful as well. I love to stop in for lunch to order one. It arrives huge in size and intimidating, but the dosa crepe is so light and crispy that you don't feel overstuffed when you are finished like you would expect too. Excellent place for Dosas which is a fried savory Indian crepe. I tried the Mysore masala dosa, the Chicken Tikka masala dosa as well as the oothappam. The kids choice of meal at a South Indian restaurant is an oothappam. It looks like a pizza for them and once it is sliced into 8 portions they don't complain and gobble it up without any fuss. read more

No doubt, great food but customer service could use a lot of improvement. I was so happy to find a place with appams anytime and am usually a regular patron. However, earlier this week, I put in a pickup order for a Chettinad chicken dosa and a couple appams. I go in, pick up the order, and when I get home (all hungry and excited) I realize that I was given the wrong food. So I call them and the guy apologized and said that I could come in Tuesday to pick up my actual order at no cost. But he forgot to mention they were closed on Tuesday. Nonetheless I call them in the next couple days and ask them about the situation and if they're going to honour their offer. I spoke to a different guy and he started to somehow argue with me. He said that he was aware about the situation and would give me just a dosa. I let him know that I was promised the whole correct order by the other gentleman and that I'd rather have the appams (like I wanted coz that's my favourite part). He proceeded to lie to me that they were out of appam (I know as they have never run out the 20 times I've ordered from them before). I knew he was lying, so I insisted that I'd be happy to come by when they have appams again. The guy said no and that he wanted to settle the situation that day and not draw it out. He then said that he didn't know what to do. He also began to say "come on, you kept the other order", to which I said, that was what the other guy told me to do - plus the order I got was fire breathing spicy with chilli flakes in the dosa- something I am not a fan of. He asked me "really?" - like he didn't believe me. This whole conversation started aggravating me as he kept saying that he'll just give me a dosa today. I was going round in circles so I let him know that I didn't want anything and not to worry about anything and I say thank you and bye. Not 5 minutes later, I got a call from them again- I didn't pick up coz 1) I was driving. 2) I was annoyed and didn't feel like being argued with when there was one thing said and now they were going back on their word - I didn't feel like arguing or being treated poorly. So, I didn't pick up my phone. Not a minute later, another call from them- again, I did not want to pick up. They've actually sadly lost my business. Although their food is delicious, their customer service has left a bad taste. There is a huge language and cultural barrier, and they should maybe look into how much customer service is valued in the west, in comparison to the east. (I am East Indian, so I am not saying this lightly or being ignorant about this fact). read more

Masala Dosa is my favourite food ever and I am always on the hunt for the perfect dosa in Edmonton that tastes just like they do in India. Aachay's is definitely that! The dosa was perfect and every dipping sauce was so delicious. I also tried the butter chicken and it was so flavourful and perfectly spicy. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES! My partner and I placed an order at Aachy's earlier this week. My partner, who is allergic to multiple nuts, clearly stated his allergies before ordering and was assured by the workers that his meals would be 100% nut free. However, after a life threatening anaphylactic reaction and 5 hours in the emergency room later, Aachy's revealed they added two types of nuts to two different dishes we ordered. They stated we did not alert them of the allergies and did not even apologize for this situation. They asked if my partner was "white" and went on to explain it was probably his ethnic background that led to this allergic reaction. I am disgusted with the staff at this establishment. Let me add my non-Indian perspective to the reviews of Aachy's. I'm not an expert on Indian food, much less from South India. My first taste of Indian food was at Expo 67 at the India pavilion. Now I realize that was Punjabi style and blandified for North American tastes. Since I moved to Edmonton, I've found that the flavour of Indian food has increased while the prices have moderated considerably. The one constant seems to have been the style. Enter Aachy's with its Tamil style cooking. My wife and her vegetarian friend lunched at Aachy's first, shortly after it opened, replacing a previous South Indian restaurant. They had the dosas and my wife afterwards was pleased but not particularly enthusiastic. I think that is because of the unfamiliarity of this particular delicacy. A few weeks ago, my wife and I went together for the Sunday noon buffet. I must disagree with one reviewer who complained about Aachy's service. From the beginning, the server was so helpful that it was almost overbearing. Perhaps it's because we are obviously non-Indian in appearance, but we received full advice on all the dishes and encouragement to take seconds and thirds from the buffet. A nice touch is that the buffet comes with a dosa prepared fresh from the kitchen. Another nice touch is that the mutton dish is made with real mutton, something I haven't eaten since my only trip to Madras. Most restaurants try and get by with lamb or possibly goat but Aachy's has the real thing. When I complimented the server on making the effort to put mutton the menu (and the bravery since mutton does have a peculiar taste) he mentioned that it was hallal. I wish I could remember where to buy it. Another mark of authenticity is that my wife and I were visible minorities among the patrons.
