Stopped in for some home made German style sausage on my last visit to Frankenmuth. I bought some Jagdwurst, Weiswurst, Bockwurst, Bratwurst, Liver, and Colby cheese. All items were made at Kern's and all were between $4 and $7. ALL of the items I purchased are DELICIOUS & TASTY. I also found some authentic German yellow mustard from Dusseldorf that is VERY GOOD. My total at the checkout was ~$34. The staff was very HELPFUL in explaining the ingredients for each type of sausage. Unfortunately, no samples of the cooked sausages were available. I would be willing to buy larger quantities if I had a sample and was certain that I liked it. Great selection of beer and wine as well. read more

We always stop at Kern's on our Frankenmuth trips. I picked up some summer sausage and bratwurst. I also got some dill cheese curds that were excellent. I was pleasantly surprised that they sold water for 50 cents a bottle. That is unheard of in today's economy. Their meat market and their bakery are just the best. Their service is awesome. The gentleman who helped me at the bakery sold me a dozen assorted cookies that were absolutely marvelous. Enjoying their Molasses, chocolate chip, and sugar cookies was just a trip down memory lane. They tasted so good. I thank Kern's for still being there after all these years and continuing to provide excellent service. read more

I've always wanted to go into the store and I've never had time. For today's visit to Frankenmuth, my husband and I parked at the mall across the street and so we decided to check out Kern's. We had enjoyed lunch at Prost earlier in the day too and had Kern's pistachio jagdwurst, which was pretty good. It was a bit more basic than I was expecting, but it has food and drinks (more so than just sausages) and a big deli counter. We ended up buying some of the summer sausage as well as some bratwurst in a few other things, which I'm looking forward to trying. Overall I would come back here just to peruse the meat selection, but they had some candies and beers and wine that looked good too. read more

Just stopped in after many years and was delighted with the selection, especially the super fresh potato salad, awesome bologna salad (a trip down memory lane) , tremendous Tiger Meat (hard to find this good!) and herring. Honestly the potato salad was the best but everything was delicious and very, very fresh. So much better than any restaurant we were planning on stopping at. We had a picnic at home instead! A cozy, quaint little market that reminds me of the beer store I grew up next door to many moons ago. You can swing in and quickly pick up the missing ingredient to tonight's meal or a nice bottle of wine. Beer drinkers are also accommodated, including some nice German imports. Kerns is what I call this country's greatest fresh German meat market. On this visit I counted over 40 different cuts or varieties of meat. A crowd favourite is their Beefstick. They offer a "garlic free" version, which is good, too. Come in early enough you can treat yourself to the Tiger meat. Into Cajun? Their andouille sausage is among the best I've had as well as the different brats and various steaks/roasts. My cousin and his buddies tell me they offer an excellent smoked salmon. I wouldn't know. They carry a few really tasty cheeses but for me it's the sausage. Even though meat prices are skyrocketing, these folks aren't too terribly expensive. Especially, for fresh cuts! 10/22 read more

We were passing through town and stopped in to see what this was all about. A pretty neat little shop that has a ton of cheeses and a ton of meats. The staff we interacted with were all friendly people. There were more people that came in towards closing time; then they kicked in to a higher gear. More so of what you might expect from a local shop. I'm sure during the week they are busier, but we felt welcome and the products being offered were interesting!! read more

I consider myself a bit of a native of Frankenmuth, I lived there from the age of two till teens. One of my best memories was the Summer Sausage from Kerns. My favorite is the all beef. It's a lovely balance of beef garlic and splices with lovely speckles of whole mustard seeds that add a subtle taste and texture I can't get enough of. Kerns Bratwurst is lovely as well with the classic snap of the casings. ( they offer skinless casings as well) Don't forget the homemade bratwurst sauce. A visit to Frankenmuth is not complete without a trip to Kerns. read more

I've only visited a few times, but if you want traditional German sausage, this is probably the place to go. It's been there forever and maybe someday should get a makeover, but overall, it's a good place for sausage. I had a craving for blood sausage, and this is the only place I know of that makes it. It's almost as good as what I ate as a child (that blood sausage was from a small Swiss style butcher in Highland IL), but nonetheless, very good. I imagine everyone has their own recipe. I also bought bockwurst -- never had it and am excited to try it. Much is pre-packaged by the store, but this probably allows them to sell the meat for longer(???). Personally, I was expecting it to be more of a butcher type shop, but it still was pretty nice. They had several different types of sausages and meats to choose from. They had a pretty good selection of cheeses as well. This is a great place to go if you're looking into Pick up some incidentals for your trip. This place has lost my business and respect. They put my son, who has cerebral palsy, on their schedule and let him go after only working one shift. Didn't even have the decency to tell him that day it wasn't going to work out. Owner handed him a his work schedule AFTER that shift and decided to let him go when he showed up for his next shift BEFORE getting started (days later) She was well aware of his situation, interviewed him, and stated they had MANY positions available to try him on. All she put him on was dishwashing duty (his right hand is very weak due to his cerebral palsy). I guess if you're a disabled relative though, a job can be found there. Way to go Kerns!! read more

This place is just odd. They heat sausages up in a microwave which I found peculiar, however I just went with it. The employees working had poor communication skills, there was confusion on who was helping what customer. The sausage sticks were good. The reason I bought the microwaved sausage is because it was cheap. I asked for pickles with my sausage and the employee looked at me like I was asking for ice in the dessert which there were pickles everywhere. read more

Dirty and overpriced. By far the worst spot in a wonderful town. Was charged over the marked price for 8 small waters. I pointed it out and was told it was marked wrong. A grocery store that sells fresh sausages that will heat them up in a microwave for you. We didnt see any menu and had to ask if they served hot food. They pointed to a few different sausages in the case we could have heated up. I didn't see any side options but there might have been some chips somewhere in the store. The sausages were served on a split top bun and you could get mustard or sauerkraut. There is one picnic table outside. 3 sausages and 3 waters were only about $15 so it's a good deal for what you get. read more

Keen's has a great fresh meat market and also a good assortment of sausages and brats. They also have baked goods until it's all gone. Try the skinless brats for a nice difference - some brats have tough casing. Also try their version of beef sticks for a snack when you are on the road. It's a dry stick that doesn't need refrigeration. I can't recall the name - just ask them. read more

Frankenmuth, a very neat little German town in MI and Kern's is a very well known place and I thought I would try something from there. They of course had a variety of cut meats, it's a standard butcher shop, but I saw Smoked Blood Sausage. I've only seen it on Bizarre Foods, but now that it's staring me in the face, I have to try. Well, I tried it, and I don't think I'll be getting it again. The texture is slightly different from regular smoked sausage. It has a softer texture, but something you can easily palate. It does have a hint of the regular smoked sausage flavor, but what it does have the regular smoked sausage doesn't, is the ripe flavor of iron. The blood in the sausage gives it an irony flavor, one that becomes a bit too much for me. After eating half of it, I had to stop. I really couldn't eat much more of it. Based on the other reviews, it appears I need to try the brats now! read more

I'm not a big sausage fan, but I'd heard Kern's summer sausage was worth the stop. Nice little grocery store that sort of reminded me of those little small-town grocery stores "up north" with a few staples you might need for cottage cooking--plus Kern's has an extensive selection of good-looking sausages and meats. The summer sausage we got there was nicely spicy. If I were to go again, I might go with a cold pack and cooler so I could take home some of the brats or other sausages to try grilling at home. read more

Kern's is a fantastic store - the old-fashioned kind of market kind you rarely see anymore. Great assortment of Wurst, Sulze, cold-cuts and a quality butcher shop too. Tasty donuts (day olds are only 50 cents, but they), a nice (but fairly small) assortment of cheeses, amazing imports from Germany (candies, mustards, sauces, soups, sauerkrauts, cookies), breads, crackers, and a fantastic assortment of beers (many imported of course). The prices here are MUCH more reasonable than in downtown proper as well. A must-stop in Frankenmuth. read more

I went in with my mother and sister-in-law while on vacation. The cashier followed us around the store, sorting random items on the shelves that didn't appear to need sorting. She never addressed us, just hovered 10 feet or so behind us while we perused their selections. When my sister-in-law presented her US Passport as ID to purchase a beer, the cashier who'd been tailing us for 30 MINUTES took an abnormally long amount of time examining her ID. The same cashier took a similarly long amount of time examining my ID as well - a Michigan driver's license. Not everyone has seen a US Passport - I get it - but it's not hard to spot the birthdate on an ID you likely have in your own wallet (or at least see frequently, being that you sell liquor in Michigan). I don't normally jump to conclusions, however the customers of lighter pigmentation did not receive this treatment. I hope in the future you keep your cashiers with the need to sort items like this one in the stock room or the unemployment office. We'll be making our purchases elsewhere when in town. read more

Kern's is a neat little convenient store mixed with a meat house. They have the best weisswurst in the area so I would recommend them! It is hard to get true "Bavarian" food in the local restaurants so you gotta check this place out. We also tried the liverwurst (mom really liked it), beef jerky (very good flavor), and their hunter sausage (very good!). Also, their selection of beer is pretty decent. read more

I love the smell of this store as you walk in. Anyway, if you like jerky, you've got to try Kerns landjager! I bring it home and it's gone. Such a great flavor. They make a great veggie pizza via special order, and their summer sausage is the best. Good wine and beer selection and fun hard to find German/eu groceries. Kern's is a 3rd generation family owned business that uses family recipes to make their sausage. For a smaller store they have an excellent selection of meats and different types of sausage. They have a nice selection of imported German biers plus imported and made in Germany foods. When I stopped at the Bratwurst Roslein in Nuremberg, Bavaria I ordered a Bratwurst Dinner. The Bratwurst tasted and looked identical to Kern's Bratwurst. Had I known that Kern's Bratwurst are the same quality of sausage made in Germany, I would have ordered something that I can't get in Michigan. read more

I ordered EXTRA sharp pinconning cheese over the phone to be delivered to me in Texas. When the order arrived it was sharp pinconning. Since I ordered it over the phone it was a he-said, she-said situation. Kevin said so sorry for the mix-up better luck next time. Wonderful customer service and food. They have came through for me with a last minute request during the holidays more than once! They have just enough selection that I never question the freshness of any product. I have never ever purchased a bad thing here. I even buy the tiger meat without any reservations. Best Summer Sausage ever. My family lives about 5 hours south of Frankenmuth in Indiana. We try to get up there about once a year (family in the area) and we never miss a trip to Kern's.
