The poutine is good, my chicken tenders were decent (their Tropic Thunder sauce wasn't half-bad), but the gravy that came with the fries was amazing! Seriously, some of the best gravy I've ever had - I drank the leftover gravy like soup it was so darn good. While my experience hasn't been amazing 100% of the time, this is definitely a better-than-average place to get food.

On their salad bar, you'll find a different variety of vegetable and fruit salads, alongside simple but excellent fruit slices like papaya, mango, and lychee fruit. Again, someone paid attention to the details, instead of just hacking up some tossed salad and a bunch of melon. I LOVED that they had sushi! It was simple stuff, mostly cucumber, avocado and shrimp, but it was beautiful and tasty--not going to complain! Desserts were simple, but there's something for everyone. Two kinds of cake, chocolate and lemon--I had one of each, plus the lovely custard. What I thought was really cool was the wide variety of ice cream they had available. They had the standard vanilla, but also mint chip, oreo and more. Service was superb. They are quick and soooo nice there. Excellent! I'm pleased with the whole experience. The menu is pretty much what one would expect in a diner/cafe of this type: breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, burgers, and several entrees. At only $6, the two eggs, hashbrowns, and toast was what was ordered - and it was great. The eggs were cooked perfectly to order, and there was a huge amount of potatoes and toast. Judging by the number of people coming through the doors, JD's appears to be one of the most popular places to eat in Westlock. If I am in the town again, I will definitely go to JD's if I get hungry.

The interior is clean and well-maintained, but not modern or stylish in any way. It's an average looking small-town restaurant. The menu has all of your "meat & potatoes" favourites that you would expect at virtually every other western-style restaurant you can think of. Was there anything there that was bold, innovative, and adventurous? Nope, not at all. But I believe this to be intentional on Laura's part. When I looked around at the clientele the vast majority of the people there were senior citizens who know what they like and like what they know. Considering how full the restaurant was I can see that Laura's have clearly hit their niche. Personally, I ordered the steak with sweet potato fries. My steak was bland and somewhat overcooked, but when I look at the crowd around me, I could see that bland and overcooked would be the ideal way to cook for most of their customers. Once again Laura's know who they're cooking for. I found Laura's to be a very ok experience. Typical food presented by typical service inside a typical restaurant. If you're the type of diner who hates surprises and is looking for a very predictable meal with nothing strange in, on, or around your food then Laura's is probably the place for you.
