Jhonathon the owner was very accommodating and gave me some foil to take home the second taco because I was so full.. you might only need one! Try the Longhorn! The beef was very tender and tasty. I liked the fresh made hot potatoes, too. I also tried the Migas taco. Very good. Last, but not least the queso was delicious, but my favorite thing was the FIRE SAUCE!!! First things first, if you're heading west on Spicewood Springs, slow down a bit because the entry ramp into the parking lot comes up fast. Easy to miss if you're not paying attention. Kesos's is counter service, but they bring the food out to your table. I actually found the place through the InKind app and it was my first time using it. The cashier was super patient while I fumbled through the setup, which I appreciated. I ordered three tacos: pollo flaco, chicken fajita, and baja shrimp. You can choose flour, double corn, or whole wheat tortillas, which is nice. Portions were great for the price. The interior is bright and cute, and there's a good salsa bar sampler with some really fresh-tasting salsas. Service overall was genuinely friendly. The restrooms are outside the restaurant. It feels a little gas-station-ish, probably just the way the building is set up. Not a big deal and not something I'd knock a star off for. As for the food, this is where it lands at 4 stars for me. The concept is that they put queso on every taco, which is fun and indulgent. That said, it kind of felt like the queso was doing the heavy lifting. Without it, I'm not sure the ingredients would stand out. The coleslaw on the shrimp taco tasted like it might've been store-bought or made in bulk. The fajita taco was fine, but the potatoes didn't really add anything for me. It wouldn't crack the top 5 taco spots in Austin for me, probably not top 10 if I'm being honest. But you're getting good value, good portion sizes, and very friendly service. In a city with fierce taco competition, that still counts for something. Austin spoils the ones who like tacos. The list of places that have good tacos just keeps growing for us. Our go-to place has been Torchys, but Kesos is darn good too. We got Baja shrimp, the islander, chicken Fajitas, the brisket queso, and the fajitas converted to bowls with rice added. Everything was delicious. The sauces they have cover the gamut from mild to hot, with good flavors and the hibiscus drink was the perfect match to tacos with some jalapeno salsa added to it. read more

In the spirit of radical honesty: They give you a BUNCH of *average* food. Big portions of mediocre food for a very good price. Nothing like what you would get at a taco truck in terms of taste, but definitely Texas sized portions. Very "Americanized" Mexican food. I got the Al pastor taco and the Baja shrimp taco and I just know that I can't bring my California friends to this place or anyone who is a taco buff. Pros: BIG portions and fresh, fresh, fresh Cons: food was served lukewarm and it wasn't properly prepared in terms of flavor. The al pastor meat barely had any achiote paste or adobo seasoning. There was no tangy marinated citrus flavor...no color to the meat...but at least it had pineapple. The shrimp taco had a coleslaw mix instead of freshly shredded plain cabbage and marinated onions. There was no cotija, the shrimp wasn't marinated in lime or seasonings, and instead of having a typic beer batter coating the shrimp, this had a rough crumbly flour batter. It also had some sort of mayo mix on it that wasn't typical. I'm used to a lime juice, sour cream, mayo concoction of some sort but this was something else. Oh well. At least the taco was fresh. When you come here, you're coming for the portion size, not the authenticity. 3 stars read more

I am so excited to see a new Kesos location open! Kesos was such a classic weekly taco stop while I was at UT Austin. They just opened this new location off of Spicewood, and I am truly jealous of anyone who works near here! We came on opening weekend and got a little discount on our tacos to celebrate the grand opening. The tacos were delicious as always, they were perfectly on par with the original location taste and presentation. They have a nice indoor and outdoor seating space with plenty of room and a modern aesthetic feel. They did a great job with this new location, I recommend stopping by!! read more

We met some neighbors/friends here for an early dinner this past weekend. We ordered guacamole, pastor tacos and breakfast tacos. It seems like they are trying to be like a Torchy's tacos but not quite there. The pastor tacos were not what I've typically experienced as they seemed more cut/cubed that shaved. My son did like the breakfast egg and bacon tacos and the friends we were with enjoyed their tacos. I need to give it another try and order some other items to see if the other tacos are better with the different sauces. read more

Kesos is unique in the way they do tacos- It's very Austin. I was visiting Austin from San Antonio when I tried Kesos and I think it gave me a good glimpse into the variations of regional cuisine. I appreciated that they give a decent portion of food and have several hot sauce / salsa options. However, I should've paid more attention to the menu descriptions because I was a little surprised at my tacos. This is the first time I've seen "Carnitas" come with potatoes and queso. It was not my favorite thing ever as I was expecting the more traditional style carnitas. The fire chick I enjoyed about the same. I found the chicken itself very flavorful, somewhat spicy, and tasty. However the taco came with more lettuce than i'd prefer and the flour tortilla texture was... not for me... It was really doughy. I'm not sure if it was undercooked, or perhaps from a package/not made in house, but it was unlike any other tortilla I've had before. I prefer a good airy/bread-like tortilla. Akin to the HEB butter tortillas one may recognize. If you aren't picky about tacos Kesos is fine. I want to clarify I'm not dogging on anyone who enjoys modern twists on traditional foods, as I myself do enjoy a Torchy's taco every once and a blue moon. But, these tacos were not to my taste and I'm not sure I would order them again if I found myself at Kesos again. read more

We were in the area. Saw this place had 4 stars and were hopeful since the interior & exterior looked cute. The menu was diverse & easy to navigate. We got the Barbacoa, Beef Fajita, and MIGAS tacos. We decided right off the bat that the Barbacoa looked completely unappetizing. They were nice about giving us a refund for that one. But I'm sorry, no place that respects themselves would serve that. The Migas was decent with crispy tortilla strips, but still too greasy for my taste. Now, the Beef Fajita taco drenched my basket with grease after the first bite. This gave me the impression that they have a hot pot full of fajita soup in the back. After that I just picked the beef out with a fork because I hate to waste meat. Just cruising by after school drop off and happened to be CUSTOMER NUMBER TWO! Super excited to try the latest taco entrant to the neighborhood. The place is super cute with a patio and I love the interior decor. Because this was an unplanned visit, I only got to try the migas taco but vow to return as the menu has me already hungry again. The migas was a first taste, packed with textures of the crisp tortilla chips and soft eggs all with a very melty and creamy cheesy undertone. It was not the typical dry "gut bomb" that most places have but a lighter taco that definitely delivered. I tried all five of the salsas (which for some of us, define a taco as a salsa delivery vehicle) -- Avocado: very light and packed with avocado. A really lovely salsa. Roasted Red: super fresh and bright. Crunchy elements, not over processed. My #2. Jalapeño: My favorite. Very close to another Austin favorite's Salsa Doña. Fire Red: a smooth and spicy tomato based salsa. Habanero: a very spicy option for those who want a very spicy option. It really was spicy. All in all, super happy with my first taste. Will be back for more breakfast tacos later in the week. Have some FOMO because 30 seconds earlier I would have been customer number one. I ordered 2 bacon & egg tacos, extra bacon on flour. Front counter gentleman was welcoming, friendly. Tacos were ready so fast! I only had time to walk to back and come back to get salsa, and boom they were done! They were cooked perfectly and tasted awesome! The bacon was flavorful and plentiful, tortilla was great. This place is located in same building that used to house Taco Shack on Spicewood Springs. I really like that they remodeled the place to make room for some indoor dining. It's limited seating inside but it's a nice change. I have tried this place twice. The first time, I ordered the bacon, egg, and queso breakfast taco. The taco had plenty of scrambled eggs and queso breakfast, but the bacon was very lacking. The taco had at most 10 tiny pieces of chopped up bacon. I thought maybe they were overwhelmed because it was their grand opening. So I decided to give them another chance a few days later. This time I ordered the egg, sausage, and queso breakfast taco. I was the only person in the place and I got the same results with the sausage because there was only a trace of it the taco. Each of the tacos cost $3.50 In my opinion, if you're trying to compete with Torchy's which is right up the road they either need to lower their prices or drastically increase the amount of the meats they are including in the breakfast tacos. On an upside, they do provide some pretty decent salsa. The jalapeno and habanero salsas were spot on. I'm still on the fence about giving them another chance. read more

I refute the low reviews here. Growing up in San Antonio and living in several Texas cities, I take tacos very seriously. Kesos serves great tacos, has an excellent and friendly staff and management, and deserves another chance if you went there the first week open. I've opened 6 restaurants, and when you open the door for the first time, you finally find out what's working and what's not. It takes time to work out the kinks. They have been around since 2014. Most businesses don't last a decade if they suck. They have TWO locations. They are an *Austin* company. Buy local. I live within walking distance and have been there 10 times. Juan, the manager, greets me with a smile; the ladies at the counter are professional and very friendly. The food comes out fast. The tacos are labeled with stickers instead of a Sharpie. The dining room is bright and comfortable. Unlike other places where there's a pour bottle trying to stay on melting ice, the salsa bar with individual portion cups is an excellent concept. I often get the Longhorn (eggs, potatoes, and fajitas) when I pick up breakfast. The fajitas are cooked to order. The portion is ample. The meat is tender. Not a single review so far has even mentioned the QUESO. It seems odd since that's their thing. Get the queso and chips, put some salsa in it if that's your thing, enjoy the patio, have a margarita or agua fresca, and if you don't like your tacos, Go to the food truck at Lowe's (wait... nowhere to sit) or The place in front of the gas station (wait... sit 2 feet from Anderson Ln) and get hit up by panhandlers or Head up the street to Torchy's--130 locations in 16 states and get your Corporate Taco. So much for Keep Austin Weird. Refutations: 1) Torchy's Migas taco is $4.49 2) If you write a review that says you'll never return, you're just being a dick. If it's your job to protect others from not trying something, get a new job. 3) If you expect barbacoa to "look appetizing," you don't know anything about it. 4) You can't count the pieces of bacon since they are cooked into the eggs 5) A "hot pot of fajita soup?' When this opened I was like the third or fourth guest. Love the way they cleaned the place up and the style is really relaxed. The team had a few 1st day hiccups but the several times I've been back those have been fixed. The tacos are amazing. First two visits I had sausage egg and cheese that seemed "wet" to me.
