I got a flat tire on my way home and this was the closest place I could get to. The guy was able to do it right away, but for some reason it still took him 20 minutes to actually get it done. I went to check out and I was charged $23. That is absurd just to change a tube. Firehouse Bikes on baltimore charges $10 total. I started to leave and then realized that the mechanic had put my back tire on backwards so it was in fixed gear position instead of freewheel, I had to come back in and have him turn it back around. He admitted that he "couldn't remember" which side i had it on. It was obviously the freewheel side since that was the side with chain grease on it. Also I was standing at the counter the whole time so he could have asked. Never coming back. read more

I keep hoping that new businesses that open up in University City with cater to the peeps living and working here... lots of specials... helpful advice...lots of hands on.. etc etc... But they feel like a mainstream company. Although they were nice enough to help me mount my bike light that I bought, when I came back for some advice on how to put on a spare tire they said they charged for that service and so they couldn't really help me out. I've seen people brag about changing flats in under 2 minutes. If it's that quick and easy for the experienced hand, wouldn't it be cool to offer it as a service to your customers? I'd totally tip you! I could walk my ass over to the other bike shops here in Philly. Make yours different! Make it personable! Make it about the community you're in! I feel like there are so many dedicated bikers who are looking for their local bike shop with that Mom and Pop feeling. Especially in an area where there are a mix of what type of people are riding bikes: there are the spandex clad who ride over 25 miles in a day, there are the people who stuff their U-Lock in their underwear and ride with one speed only, and then there are kiddos like me who mostly ride to commute to work, class, and to meet friends for the occasional drink... And because I'm not a hardcore cyclist, I'd love to take some affordable classes on basic bike care, learn how to safely to do some minor repairs, etc etc... Anyway, still looking for my perfect bike store... sigh! read more

I was only coming in for a couple tubes, but the guy who helped me out was super friendly, and even asked if I was a student (I am), and threw in a student discount. I'm not sure what all it applies to, but I was buying anyway, which makes it even more impressive to me that they voluntarily threw in the discount. It's not my closest shop (though it is very close to the West side of the Penn campus), but I will probably be back. read more

Amazing service, great product! This review is long overdue. A few years ago we bought two bikes for our daughters from Keswick - there were a few snafus getting the bikes but after a few days the girls got the bikes they wanted in the proper size and we were very happy with the price. Two years later, we had a problem with one of the bikes. I was questioning whether or not to take the bike to Keswick for service and sent an email expressing my frustration with the problems with our original order. The owner who was unaware of the problems we had, (my fault I should have reached out sooner) when we purchased the bikes and was more than happy to bend over backwards to make us happy Keswick loving customers. He personally drove to our home, picked up the bike, had the minor problem fixed the same day, tuned up the bike and delivered it back to our home. As if that was not already spectacular service he then picked up the other bike and gave us a free tune up for that one and delivered it back to our home too. I can not speak more highly of our satisfaction with the service and quality customer care. Great product and good prices too! Diagnosed and fixed my bike with no troubles or complaints after other bicycle shops denied that there was anything wrong. Kept me updated while the bike was in the shop and gave me detailed options during the process. Great service in the back and very helpful towards casual bikers and commuters. Encountered one store clerk who was rather confused about some of the merchandise when I asked about baskets, but he was friendly, as is everyone else behind the counter, so I didn't mind. Great place to go to for bike maintenance...took my bike in to get pedals fixed/replaced (new pedals and install fee-$20) and was in and out within 10min...the guy that worked on my bike suggested I put in some air but ended up doing it for me. Staff was friendly and courteous. The location is also super close to where I live so that's a big plus. I'll def be a returning customer. read more

I don't review often, but I had a great experience here today. I needed someone to look at my front wheel to assess some damage to it. They were really helpful and said it didn't need to be replaced or anything. I appreciated that they didn't encourage me to replace a part that didn't need replacing. A handful of good deals but for the most part I can always count on feeling like I'm being ripped off by their prices, especially for services. Went in today because my bike tire kept rubbing on my fender. Guy said he'd take a look at it. Took him a minute to look at it, 2 minutes to just adjust the fender and 20 seconds to take it down and roll it back to me. Cost $5.40 with tax. This is only the most recent issue. They have good products but their services are really expensive . read more

Keswick Cycle is awesome--plain and simple. I've been biking in Philadelphia for three years, and haven't found a bike shop that I've felt more comfortable and welcome in until this one opened this fall. Keswick's space is large for a Philadelphia bike shop, but the atmosphere is friendly and intimate--staff began to greet me by name after only a few visits. The shop is big enough that you can walk around and check things out without bumping into racks and/or people. Staff are polite and helpful, but not overbearing. I've test ridden several of their bikes (some even inside the shop!) and gotten in depth explanations of different features of each one. On several occasions, staff have talked with me after the shop has closed, and even driven items to my house when I was on my bike and couldn't carry them. On one occasion, I stopped to get my bike tuned up after a long ride and the manager offered to drive me home! When I got clipless pedals put on my new bike, one employee offered to ride with me part of the way home to make sure I got the technique down. Needless to say, Keswick employees go above and beyond. I could not be more satisfied with the quality of products and customer service at Keswick Cycle. read more

My partner and I had a really great experience with Keswick Cycle. Super knowledgeable staff, really kind and helpful and very fair prices. We dragged 2 bikes out of my garage that had been in there for at least 5 years, and were able to get everything we needed to have them in great working order--two tunesups (one each) helmets, bike lights, and great locks, which they even helped us fit to our bikes and installed the holsters for the lights and locks free of charge. They fixed my broken chain, adjusted my kickstand, and aligned everything, fixed the tires, etc. They appraised the bikes so we'd know how much we can sell them for when we're done with them or when we move as long as they stay in good condition. I give Keswick cycles 5 stars for helping turn a trip from California to Philadelphia into a pleasurable adventure. I contacted Keswick about two months before our trip in regards to renting two road bicycles for me and my brother too ride the Schuylkill River Trail from Philly to Valley Forge. They suggested the University store for picking up the bicycles and bring necessary gear such as shoes and pedals. Having the experience of the best laid plans going wrong was not the case. When my brother and I arrived there were two Specialized Roubaix Experts in our riding size waiting for us, one just out of the box. The staff was more than gracious and provided us with maps and information on where to get on the Schuylkill River Trail Though renting road bikes such as these is somewhat pricey it was well worth it. We picked the bikes Friday evening, road a pleasurable 42 miles Saturday, and returned them at opening Sunday. No pressure. The ride was an absolute pleasure, precision shifting, good fit, and great scenery that we had not experienced before. The Keswick store that we went too was totally unique in layout, spaciousness and product display. I have not seen a store quite like this in Southern California. I took my bike here for a tune up, and I was really impressed with their service. The staff who work there are really nice, and they are willing to explain anything that you ask about. Although I've been biking for about 8 years now, I still surprisingly know very little about bikes. Every time I go to a bike shop to get a tuneup I always get suckered in to buying things I don't need or replacing things that aren't that broken. This place was different, though. Right off the bat, they quickly inspected my bike and said that everything that they did to my bike would be covered under the flat tune up rate. They adjusted my brakes, greased everything up, and even adjusted my seat so that it fit me better. Overall a great place to go for anything bike-related! read more

This review is for the Service Department. I am new to biking and I took my bike in for a once over and I had a few questions. I called in advance and was told they do free inspections/consultations. I recently bought a used bike and the brakes were pretty squeaky. I talked with a guy in the back briefly. He listened to my concerns, rode the bike himself, spent about 15 minutes with it and gave it back to me, offering a little advice. All of my questions were answered and I couldn't be happier. It now rides like new and only cost me $5 for him to remedy the break squeal and lubricate the chain. While I was waiting, I was approached by another employee who asked if I needed any help. I would recommend this place to anyone and will be back for anything I may need in the future. read more

I had put off buying a new bicycle for a long time; so when I had come into the market I bought the bike and a ton of accessories all at once. Keswick was a one-stop shop and had everything I needed, on sale, reasonable prices and free installation. I stopped in at 6:45 p.m. tonight with a tire going flat. Not only did they repair my tire by Rob stayed after closing time to take care of my bike. He also told me my sprocket could use grease I told him to do what ever it needs. The total price was $19.44 for the tire repair and greasing the sprocket was done at no charge. I would definitely recommend this place. I will be traveling from Lansdale to get my bike inspection done and all other repairs from now on. read more

Keswick Cycles in U. City is one of the nicest and most spacious places to get bicycles and gear in the city. The space is big enough to test ride inside, the staff are super helpful, informative, and low-pressure, and the repair service is quick and thorough. They have a good selection of bikes for riders of every level and are always willing to bring a bike over from one of their other shops if they don't have it in stock - they did this for me when I was interested in a Specialized cross-bike this fall. Other shops can feel pretentious and like you have to be a certain level rider to get good service. Not so with Keswick. They know a ton about bikes, but maintain a comfortable, low-pressure atmosphere, which is the kind of place I prefer to shop. read more

I really like the Locust St. Keswick location, which is the only one I've been to. I bought my road bike from them recently, and the whole experience was easy, friendly, and low-key. I got honest advice about which bike would be the best fit for me, and no pressure to jump up to more expensive models. It's also awesome that they fit you on the bike you've picked out--not many other shops will do this, and yet it's such a critical component of a good relationship with your bike. So, much appreciated. As long as I can help it, Keswick and Bicycle Therapy (also admirable) are now my bike shops of choice in the inner city. read more

typical mechanics, fix something here, break something there so the customer needs to come back. well, i will not be coming back to this scam shop. first of all the prices are ridiculous and its obvious they are doing mainly card business when the guy at the register has to ask how to push thru for a cash payment. Money launder less... anyways ill tell you what happened, i came in here to get a flat fixed. got the flat fixed but curiously when i left my rear gearshift would not stay in its position which would then cause the bike to always revert back to the hardest gear. thanks unfortunately less than a week later i ran over a nail and had to get the back tire replaced. i did decide to replace the front tire as well. either way the guy does the replacement for both wheels and comes out saying that the rear tire has two broken spokes. i would have preferred if he had come to me before fixing so i could reanalyze my decision to get the tires replaced.. im fairly certain this guy snipped the spokes anyway.. Whatever let me tell you though how i left the store and the gears were slipping nonstop. pretty sure he tampered with it. typical to make matters worse, i went over a bump 6 days later and the fucking seat snapped off... WTF? i really dont find this stuff to be coincidental and i will really never be going back to this store. if you do decide to use this store, i would recommend looking over their shoulder while they do repairs. and if they dont let you, well, you know why. read more

I'm not a biker, but need a bike to commute around the city. I was looking at places like Target or Walmart because I didn't want to deal with pushy elite cyclists trying to sell me the most expensive bike. After reading many blogs about good bikes for the city, I decided it would be worth it to try a bike store in the neighborhood. When I walked into Keswick Cycle, I felt like I could voice my concern and inexperience without feeling like a nuisance. They weren't pushy, they gave me a selection that met my need and budget. I went here twice last summer for repair work. The second time was to fix a problem they didn't assess well enough the first time. But the second repair job was also not done well, and a few month later required another repair (this time at a different shop, I wasn't going to go back a third time). This new bike shop told me to show the incorrect parts Keswick installed to Keswick to see if they'd make it right. Keswick gave me a partial refund and told me they hired a new service manager. I'm probably not going back here for repairs after this saga, but they made it right by me and that says a lot about the people that work there. read more

Not worth it. Horrible quality and they nickel and dime you. I took my bike here to get serviced and got charged for replacing a flat tire that occurred while in their possession. I feel that it shouldn't come out of my pocket when the tire was perfectly fine when i brought it in. Also, the quality of the tuneup was horrible. My bike was brand new. I brought it in to have the gears and breaks tuned before using the bike for my commute. My gears continually lock and get caught when trying to change from gear to gear. It got so bad that i took my bike to BICYCLE THERAPY to take a look since it is close to my work. They were shocked to hear that I had just tuned my bicycle and fixed whatever was causing the locking of the gears for free! Also, the bike lock holder was loose from switching from my old bike to my new bike. I asked if they can just screw the strap so that it wouldn't budge and they said it wouldn't be a problem and they would take care of it and wont be an extra expense. When I came back to pick up my bike, they totally forgot about it. When i reminded them about it, they said they can do it for 25 bucks for labor! it shouldn't be that much to drill a screw on the strap. It is ridiculous. I will never come back to this place. read more

first off, 8 dollars for a tube is god damn ridiculous. i understand that this shop is in ucity, and stores can get away with upcharging rich penn students, but every other bike shop i have been to charges 6 bucks max, including ones in more ~posh areas. second, all of the boys working there were rude???? my cashier /maybe/ made eye contact with me once, and the only words he said were "just the tube and labor. thats 19.44." im not exaggerating. i work in customer service also, so i understand its tough to be cheerful and Hella Friendly at all times, but this guy wasnt even baseline polite. also, the boy who did my repair wasnt much better but he at least said "thank you" and "youre welcome." honestly will not be coming back and im really peeved that i spent 8 bucks on a tube and shitty service. keswick cycle is bougie bike bros at their worst. read more

Keswick is great! I know nothing about bikes and walked in and asked about buying a bike. They were really patient and let me test-ride without any pressure. I didn't end up buying a bike from them, but when I walked in a few months later with a bike I had purchased elsewhere to buy fenders and a basket, they installed them for me free of charge (and guilt). Recently I went in with a lock I had purchased from them that was malfunctioning, and they let me swap it out with a different kind, even though it was a week past the exchange period. Which is also annoying, I know. But if they were irritated by this, they didn't show it; and, in addition to the excellent service, I got a bit of an education on bike mechanics. Keswick is as good as it gets for a community bike shop IMHO. They have a good selection of bikes, equipment and materials and a great repair counter in the back. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and not at all the insufferable bike snobs that populate so many other bike shops in the city. Best of all you can ride your bike right into the store through the automatic sliding door. i've known about their original location in Glenside since i was a kid which was always a cool place to go and drool over bikes as you get service or pick up some new gear. the new shop in UC has a really cool layout with a ton of bikes. typically you go to a bike shop and get little selection or snobbery and left feeling like a dummkopf. here there's a great selection from tri bikes, high end road/mountain to hybrids, cruisers and kids. actually if it has one, two, three wheels or even folds then they have it. expert repair shop with fair prices. you can leave your bike overnight or chill on the sofa and watch tv if it's a simple fix. nicest staff i've ever encountered which is uncommon when shopping in philly read more

I don't know much about bikes and had an issue with my handle bar that I didn't know how to fix. I brought my bike in and the guy behind the maintenance desk was very happy to help me and didn't charge me for the service. He also explained what went wrong and the tool I need to fix it in the future. It was very helpful and I will definitely go there if I have any other problems. read more

I walked in knowing nothing about bikes or how to determine which one was right for me. The staff was very knowledgeable and patient. Greg was awesome, he spent so much time with me answering questions, walking me through the specs of several bikes that were in my budget and their differences. Some of the bikes I was considering weren't my size so they simply built them and I came back a couple days later to test drive with no pressure. After my third visit my husband and I each bought bikes and a U-lock which they installed for free.
