I'm a long time customer of this business for a bunch of reasons: They do great work. The mechanics are honest about what is and is not fixable. The prices are more than reasonable, even during the pandemic, when bike stuff was near impossible to get. I went in to grab a tube yesterday, and the mechanic who sold it to me alerted me to a potential manufacturer defect that, if present, was easily fixable with some needle nose pliers. That wound up explaining a problem I'd been having on a different bike (with the same brand of tube purchased from a different retailer). If you live in South Philly, there really isn't any other shop that comes close. read more

I used to live a little more north and would take my bike to another shop where I would always get recommended things and end up being charged over $100. here, i dropped off my bike for a $65 tune up. when i picked up my bike, i was only charged $37 because he said he didnt need to do all the stuff. Took my vintage road bike (70's Raleigh) here for a flat. One person didn't acknowledge me when I walked in --younger with dark hair seated at the register-- but the other person greeted and took me in after I got to the counter. It took about 40 mins but they replaced my tire & tube + I bought handle bar wrap and asked to also have my old one replaced. After getting home I noticed the tire wasn't riding smoothly and the ridge lines weren't center. From behind, the wheel looks wobbly. I grabbed my pump only to realize they didn't add enough air to the recommended 90 PSI -- it was at like 30. Also noticed they didn't add enough tape to seal the handle bar wrap which would peel easily since it was exposed, and left off my rear hex-nut protection cap on the wheel (no biggie). I called to ask whether they generally fill the tires/level the wheels --reply was yes-- and reported my experience: the next day I return with my bike for them to take a look. I tried making small talk with the counter guy but it was awkward, so I kept leaving/coming back to check when the bike would be ready since they didn't give an estimated timeframe. To be clear, the bike attendant WAS EXTRA NICE that day -- super chatty although they didn't explain what happed just replaced the tire completely and added more tape to secure the bars. After forgetting the hex nut cap again, I popped back in to the remark they must have "extras somewhere" . TLDR: they replaced my tire a second time, I get home to take it for a ride and my bike chain popped off the crankset while on a NIGHT RIDE. There's no point in calling about the issue because of the vibe I was getting in the shop but I don't plan on returning. In total, I paid $80 and it's def not worth it. read more

I've been going to this bike shop location for about 20 years now... Regardless of the owner or name out front, I have always received great customer service. Getting ready to go to work today, I noticed one of my chain links was partially broken so I called these guys and told them my situation. That I was on my way to work and could they throw on a new chain real quick. Was told it would take approx 20-30 mins to do.. I arrived 20 mins after the call and was told to leave it for an hour because they just had a shipment of bikes come in and that was their priority. Not other customers ahead of me but, a shipment of merchandise.. So I bought the chain and chain tool from them and will have to do it when I get out of work. This was a chain replacement for a 20"BMX bike.. Seriously would have took 10 mins to do. I WILL NOT BE RETURNING. SCREW THESE GUYS!!!!! read more

I have dealt with times where I had a flat and I needed to move quickly (dog walking) and they hurried to find the reason for my flat. Changed my inner tubes and even changed the outer tube. If you're like me you've been the cool-guy hipster bike shop, the trendy little boutique shop, the bro shop, the commercial shop, the shop your friend told you about, the Mexican shop, the chain shop, and everything in-between. Good news: this is the LAST shop you'll ever go to. Maybe because it's a blue-collar, no-frills, get you in and out shop? Maybe because they're honest, serve the community and ain't tryna rip you off? Or because today, when my star left me, the owner of the shop enthusiastically grabbed my bike, threw it up on the stand, replaced the part, charged me $15, and had me out the door in 15 minutes. No stories, no tatted mechanics crowding around you casting judge mental glares (you know who you are), just a couple dudes fixing flats and replacing stars. It seems some people have had hit or miss experiences with them, but here is my hit story: Today with only 15 minutes before they closed I walked in with a flat back tire. While they worked on my bike another woman walked in with her bike that had already been worked on. She had a flat tire again. They fixed it for free, they gave her an even heavier duty tube and they were great about it. So today I've seen that they stand by their work, and if there is a problem they are happy to fix it. They also had my rear flat and her front flat both done before 7pm. Well done guys! read more

For starters, the staff doesn't wear masks, doesn't socially distance, and doesn't enforce social distance for customers. I took my bike here for their $70 regular tune-up. They suggested getting a new drivetrain, which I declined because the bike had been working fine and I just needed a routine tune-up. I noticed after I picked up my bike that the bike didn't seem much better, so I took it to another shop. That shop told me that South Philly Bike had done next to nothing for the alleged tune-up. For 20 minutes and $65, the other shop fixed what South Philly Bikes missed, and my bike feels great now. The other shop even said that the "work" that had been done on my bike was an insult to the profession. read more

Took a chance and stopped in this past Tuesday evening to drop my bike off to have my brake fixed. Dan was about the close up for the night but he kindly took a look anyway - which he clearly didn't have to do. Dan took care of it for me and didn't ask for anything in return. Super nice and helpful. My bike is good to go. Anyone who does business this way is doing something right - these are the people you want to work with. I can't say enough about this place. read more

So I took my road bike here for a basic tune up and asked them to fix a loud, clicking pedal that was irritating me and asked them specifically to take a look at other wear and tear (loose grip tape, worn cogs etc). These are largely simple repairs I could make myself, but I didn't want to spend the time and it's always good to support a local shop. And who knows, maybe the clicking sound was indicative of some bigger issue with the bike. Better to let professionals check it out. I dropped the bike and never heard back. They had entered my phone number incorrectly so after I couple of days I called them. They said the bike was ready and apologized for the error. No big deal. I borrow a car to go grab the bike, a staffer or owner greets me and says he tightened/lubed everything and fixed the creaking pedal. No obvious work appears to have been done to the bike (tape still loose, same cogs, same pedals) but he charged me an affordable rate for a basic tuneup, so I leave the shop. I take the bike for a quick spin around the block to check the work and immediately notice the same clicking pedal. I return to the shop and mention that the issue was not resolved. The same mechanic, who was polite throughout this exchange, apologizes, takes the bike for a test spin himself and admits the issue is still there. He says he had said he had confused the noise with creaking handlebars. Why he would not have also addressed that issue, I don't ask. He takes the bike back into their work area. At this point, time has passed and I need to return the car I borrowed. But the mechanic insists that he can quickly swap out my old pedals and resolve the issue. He emerges later and my road bike now is now sporting pair of large multi-colored mountain bike pedals which, unlike my old pair, don't have toe clips. I immediately point this out and the mechanic apologizes again -- They're out of road bike pedals & toe clips. He says I can keep the new pedals, no charge. At this point, I'm late to return the car and quite mad. I have to ask for my old pedals back, which the mechanic retrieves. I have to ask him to refund the tune up fee. He agrees. But I shouldn't have had to ask. I had requested very basic repair work and would have gladly paid extra for new parts or extra labor, or let them take more time (which they had anyway, because they lost my number). Instead, the mechanic did minimal work on the bike, tossed in a last minute repair, put the wrong parts on my bike, and tried to pass it off as a finished job. Now, I have to order new pedals and replace them myself and I annoyed the person I'd borrowed the car from. I'm giving this place two stars because the guys were perfectly nice. But I think this was clearly a bad and avoidable experience. I'm sure this place is fine for a flat fix or other very minor repair work, but other than that, you should look elsewhere. read more

I stopped by South Philly Bikes on my way to spin class, because I was concerned about my self-installation of the SPD cleats for my shoes. The gentleman inside was friendly and was happy to take a look and make the necessary adjustments for me. He refused to accept any payment, which was very nice. Front tire popped and I needed to get it fixed fast between work shifts- stopped by and was helped immediately- in & out in less than 10 minutes. Great customer service, no weird elitist attitude that you sometimes get at bike shops, AND they take cards! Will 100% make this my new go-to repair stop. read more

Awesome customer service. I took my bike here over the summer and the employee working (might have been the manager) fixed my gears in a few minutes and didn't charge me anything. Seems like a friendly local establishment. read more
