Great little downtown area and Kettell is just on the edge of it on the way out of town. It has the three things I look for in a place - outdoor seating/dog friendly, food available, and of course a good selection of beers. Me and the Mrs. each got a flight, but neither of us could find one of the eight that made us want to invest in a full pint. Not that the beer is bad, we just didn't find one that made our taste buds sing. Great brewery! We stopped here while in the area to ski! The place was previously called Flat Top Mountain Brewery, but they said they rebranded about a year ago, but seems to be taking time to switch over online. The brewery is open and has tables, high tops, couches and the bar. It's a good size so I bet gets busy, we were there late on a Thursday night before the holiday weekend so it was all locals. You can tell they all come here frequently and know each other which was nice & we quickly made new friends. They also allow dogs inside which is always nice. They had a good selection of beers and a good range (thank you for not having 12 IPAs). We got a flight 4 and a cider. All had great tastes and were well balanced. I've been to Kettell Beerworks a handful of times now. It is a little out of the way from Boone. I've only ever visited during the pandemic, and I think every time I've brought my partner and my puppy. The place isn't fantastic, but for some reason I can't not rate it 5 stars. It's truly not the best brewery ever, but something about it keeps drawing us back. The inside is alright, there are several tables to sit at with stools. An outside area also exists, partly a patio and partly within the paved parking lot right out front. The beer here is honestly very standard fare and errs on the side of being old-school. You'll find a fairly standard array of IPAs, stouts, and lighter beer styles. I actually highly recommend the food. It is way better than it has any right to be. I've tried the pizza and the pretzel, and both were fantastic, IMO. You also have to check our their merch. The shirts are Comfort Color brand, meaning they are super comfortable cotton that washes and wears well. The design is simple but unique. Some of the glassware they sell have nucleation points (which are essentially laser etchings on the bottoms that cause bubbles to continuously rise helping with carbonation, making it so the beer doesn't go flat while you're sipping on it.) For dog people: Dogs are allowed, but can be hard to wrangle since there's no grass or ability to let them really walk around much. Good news is you can leave your pups in the car with open windows right next to you (like literally 3 feet away from where you are sitting outside.) This was awesome when I went with my puppy. I set him up with toys, bones, and water, all windows cracked, and drank my beer right next to him, being able to pet him through the window. read more

Came across this place while searching for wineries and brews. Everyone loved the Kolsch. The sweet chili wings were very tasty but needed a tad longer cook. The pretzel with the cheese and spicy mustard or whatever other dip you may want. Pretty darn good. The pizza comes with 2 diff crusts - both yummy . The lady behind the counter super sweet. Some friends and I stopped by here while waiting to go on the Alpine Ski Coaster. It's very unassuming from the front, so don't miss it. There were two or three picnic tables outside and then additional tables inside. Given COVID, we sat outdoors. There were 10 or so beers on draft. It looked like two were variants on the same beer. I think I got a stout. My friends and I agreed the beer wasn't too memorable, but it's worth a stop if you're in the little town of Banner Elk. read more

Stopped in on a quiet afternoon in November. Very relaxing, especially after partaking in the pizza and 4-sample flight I ordered. All 4 brews were good, but the Crabby Louie IPA was the one that really stood out. Great flavor and very smooth. In a way, it reminded me of some of the really good white wines I've tasted in Germany. Strange but true. I'm just sorry I bought only one 4-pack home as a souvenir. I LOVED this place! I definitely recommend it if you're in the Banner Elk area. Beer: DELICIOUS! I had the kolsch (per a prev Yelper's recommendation) as well as the imperial IPA. Both were great! Beertender: she was delightful, personable, and happy to make suggestions. Building/Parking: the main area was just the right size. It also has a game room in the back. There are a couple of tables in front for outdoor seating options. I did not have the need to check out the bathroom, so I cannot report on those. We arrived for just a casual beer and walked into a bar full of patrons who all had rubber necks. We were stared down all the way up to the bar until we stopped looking to see if we were being spectated still. Keep in mind are 4 casually dressed people who do not stand out in anyway. With this disdainful expression from the patrons glaring into our pitiful existence, we decided to set up tent in a backroom with a shuffleboard to mess around with. Shortly after, we decided we would sit down and watch tv, which was a live stream on different trains from around the world. We were in awe at the sights to see! If we were characters from Animal crossing. The beer was okay and the service was kind, however dont come here if you dont want to feel like you are in the back shed of Ed Gein's outhouse. Don't miss this spot. Highly recommend. I both brew and judge beer competitions as a hobby. These guys have some great beers and an awesome spot in Banner Elk. I had the amber, Kolsch, stout, Munich lager and the Oktoberfest, and couldn't find many flaws. Their beers are brewed to the specifications of the Beer Judge Certification Program (the standards by which all beers are judged). I would've scored every beer I drank today between 38 and 43 out of 50 points. And let me tell you, a 40-point beer is phenomenal. The Octoberfest was my favorite.... Not too malty like most American versions. Good bitter, supported by a sweet malt backbone. Great beer. The Kolsch was phenomenal, with a light grainy sweet malt aroma and flavor with a medium hop bitterness. 40-point beer. Awesome. Shuffleboard and a golden tee machine round out the fun. Definitely will go back to Kettell time and time again. Not only is their beer great, but the service is also excellent. The recent negative reviews surrounding the kids are blown out of proportion. Kettell has always been a kid friendly place for well-behaved children. The kids were screaming multiple times well over the music and others. I was annoyed by them myself and appreciated that the bartender addressed the situation for the rest of us trying to enjoy a beer. She did not approach them until it happened multiple times with no attempt by the parents to control them. The only place that behavior should be allowed is at Chuckie Cheese. As Kettell may serve pizza like Chuckie Cheese, they also serve beer and that means adults would like to relax and enjoy it. Bring your kids and bring something for them to do. To all those complaining about Kettell Beerworks not being "kid friendly", I happened to be there on Saturday the 28th of January when these bad ratings were given. Kids were running around the tables constantly. Screaming, yelling, stomping, etc. with absolutely no control from parents. Yes, this brewery is "kid friendly" if kids are well behaved and within control of responsible parents. This is a BREWERY where people come to have a beer, get some food, and enjoy the company of others. It is not a daycare center, nor a playground, nor a park. read more

Our kids were playing around and the drink pourer came up and yelled at our kids and told them to stop playing and that they were distracting other customers (without even talking to the parents first). The kids were not yelling or causing a ruckus. If you have kids are a family don't plan to go to this place. The staff is very rude and is not family friendly. We've been here twice when it was Tabletop. Stopped today for a visit on our weekend getaway. My husband and I ordered 2 flights. My husband accidentally spilled a 5 ounce pour. The beertender wiped it up and never offered a new pour. I realize it was my husbands fault but as a pub owner myself, I always offer a replacement pour,and it was 5 oz, not a full pint. The beer was below average. I only drank one of my pours and tried to choke down half of another because I felt bad purchasing a full flight and only drinking one. I left 2 1/2 pours. The beertender never spoke to us after we ordered. She only conversed with the other patrons who were probably regulars. You would think if she saw that much beer not being drank she would at least ask if we didn't like something or want to try something else. Nope, nothing. We love craft beer and always seek out local places on our travels. After this experience, we will not be back. Too bad, it was an awesome little place before. read more
