Given that neither of us had ever had a cavity prior to this dentist, she thought that was fishy and went to get a second opinion, and lo and behold, she didn't have anything resembling a cavity. I don't have proof for me personally, but I suspect they did an unnecessary filling for me and definitely were about to do the same for her. Apparently this sort of unnecessary work recommended by dishonest dentists does happen. Avoid this dentist if at all possible, but if you do choose to go here and get a recommendation for a filling or more invasive procedure, get a second opinion before proceeding.

My first childhood dentist didn't believe in using anesthesia or novacaine of any sort -- not even laughing gas! I had some genetically jacked-up teeth, so that + no pain relief amounted to some scary, scary visits. I also had some discount dental work done at the U of M dental school at one point, and being a young'un with lots of people staring into your mouth when you are hurting/not comfortable in the least is not particularly fun either. As I approached my teens and also needed orthodontia, my parents finally put me with a dentist who did use anesthetic, and he was OK, but I would still feel entirely freaked out every time I had to go. I didn't think I would ever fully get over my dentist anxiety, though, until I started going to Dr. Tim. I don't even know why my parents selected he and Dr. Becky initially, but I ended up following their lead. Boy was I glad I did! I've been seeing him now for at least 7 or so years (sometimes I see his sister, Dr. Becky), and he and his staff always make me feel totally comfortable. He's wonderfully funny and genuinely enjoyable to talk with (when my mouth isn't full of stuff), and so I genuinely look forward to seeing him! He's also very sensitive about affordability and options. If you have somewhat limited dental insurance, he's willing to help you think about what/how might be the most affordable way to get what you need covered, or at least find a different option (sometimes something cheap from the pharmacy is better than nothing at all!). The person at the front desk (I think her name was Niki) was very helpful when I was filling out my forms and explained to me what was covered through my UofM grad student insurance, along with other logistics related things. I'm usually not good with paperwork, so her help was very much appreciated! After the initial examination, I learned that I had a filling that came loose and some minor gingivitis (which was expected since my teeth have been bothering me for a while now), and Dr. Ma explained her treatment plan for me in a way that I could actually understand. I should mention that I usually get very anxious when it comes to dentists, but Dr. Ma's gentle approach helped alleviate some of that anxiety. Oh yeah, and the hygienist was super thorough. Like, it felt like she got to parts of my mouth that I didn't even know existed. Quick Edit: my boyfriend recently went to Choice Dental after I pestered him about his dental health situation. He's just as weary of dentists as I am, so I was really relieved when he told me that he had a good experience with Dr. Kim. Better yet, when I went for my cleaning, the DENTIST did the whole cleaning. Not a 2 minute consult. The WHOLE cleaning. Long story short, this dentist will make you feel like you're back in time, with a dentist who's good at what he does and actually gives a damn about you. Old school. My issue is that after just 2 hours from leaving this office I was in a crazy amount of pain while i was at the dentist getting fillings done, I asked if i needed a root canal because even though she numbed me I could still feel the pain .. she said no I don't need it and to stick it out we were almost done .. I have had fillings done before and they never felt like this.. I called the office and they wouldnt see me and told me to wait for my doctor to call.. I asked what do they do with emergency patients that were just seen there.. they had no idea and tried to act like what i was going through was normal... mind you I currently work in healthcare and in dental before. I asked can I be seen for them to double check the work she said no .. the dr called me after office hours and told me she can see me in the afternoon the next day.. but didnt offer any medication or what to do with this pain.. luckily i was able to contact a new office who allows emergency appointments and they said the Doctor drilled too deep the next day I went in for a root canal A2 smile called me and asked for my review .. I want a refund for my filings
