It took me a while to find a new dentist after moving to Ann Arbor for school, but I'm glad I went with Choice Dental! (Thank you Annemarie for recommending them to me!) It's run by a husband & wife team of Dr. Kim and Dr. Ma, so it felt good knowing that I was supporting a local business instead of some corporate franchise. The person at the front desk (I think her name was Niki) was very helpful when I was filling out my forms and explained to me what was covered through my UofM grad student insurance, along with other logistics related things. I'm usually not good with paperwork, so her help was very much appreciated! After the initial examination, I learned that I had a filling that came loose and some minor gingivitis (which was expected since my teeth have been bothering me for a while now), and Dr. Ma explained her treatment plan for me in a way that I could actually understand. I should mention that I usually get very anxious when it comes to dentists, but Dr. Ma's gentle approach helped alleviate some of that anxiety. Oh yeah, and the hygienist was super thorough. Like, it felt like she got to parts of my mouth that I didn't even know existed. Quick Edit: my boyfriend recently went to Choice Dental after I pestered him about his dental health situation. He's just as weary of dentists as I am, so I was really relieved when he told me that he had a good experience with Dr. Kim. And when he says anything positive about any kind of doctor, he REALLY sincerely means it. I'd been going to my dentist for the past couple of years... it was, you know, one of those dentist offices that make you feel like a puppy in a puppy-mill. A chain (message me if you want to avoid them) that would always cancel your approintments the week of, offering you an appointment you couldn't make or an appointment 5 months off. And everytime you'd go, different dentist. Nice. So, when I changed jobs, my wife and I looked for a new dentist. Little researcher that she is, she found Dr. Choi at Choice Dental, which is on South Main just across from the stadium in that office building with the parking underneath. Not only is the office pleasant and the staff very friendly and competant, but the service is just outstanding. Everytime I'd turn around, he'd have something new and techy, from the tiny camera he used to take pics of my teeth so I could see what was going on to the program he used to show my how my teeth were going to move. Better yet, when I went for my cleaning, the DENTIST did the whole cleaning. Not a 2 minute consult. The WHOLE cleaning. Long story short, this dentist will make you feel like you're back in time, with a dentist who's good at what he does and actually gives a damn about you. Old school. Have been going to Choice Dental regularly for 4 years now, and they have always been very professional, quick and efficient. The dental hygienists I've had have are all very friendly and explain everything as they go through a cleaning. Dr. Choi comes in at the end and does his own thorough exam, then takes time to explain and answer any questions. I've never needed any additional work done, but my wife has had a few fillings done and she has said it was smooth without any issues. I appreciate that they take most insurance (at least the 2 that we've had over the years) and let you know about specific costs for any procedures needed, and also talk through various options for treatment. I loved the prior location as it was much closer a few blocks from Michigan Stadium, but the new office in Ypsilanti has plenty of parking, and the office and equipment all look new. read more

Nikki and Dr. Choi are amazing! I was staying with a relative in MI and thought I broke a tooth. I called Choice and spoke with Nikki who was very helpful and took down all of my information. She quickly relayed it to Dr. Choi who called me later that day. Nikki and Dr. Choi set up an appointment for the next day to do an x-ray on the tooth to see the extent of the damage. Nikki took the x-ray and Dr. Choi came in a minute later to go over the x-ray and the situation with my tooth in great detail. Happy to say the tooth was not broken. Having poor experiences with dentists when I was younger obviously leads me to be wary of new dentists. But when I broke my tooth shortly after moving here I had no choice but to find a new dentist. I am so glad I chose this place. Since that fateful day years ago, I and now my spouse both have made this our family dentist. I am only disappointed in the fact that I have not reviewed them until now. I have seen them during pre-covid and covid times and all experiences have been good. What I like: - everyone from the receptionists, to the hygienists, to the dentists are friendly, hospitable, compassionate and helpful. - I have tmj and so holding my jaw open for so long is painful and I appreciate how very aware, sensitive, and proactive to help and make it more comfortable for me. - they are quick to listen to your concerns and patient to explain procedures or reasons for why something should be done. - I feel safe and comfortable with the precautions they now take with covid. I was unsure of visiting a dentist during covid because obviously one cannot remain 6 feet apart but I felt like they handled the new challenge professionally well. - they respect your time. Never really running late and they get the procedure done when they say they will which is important when you have to block time from work for the dentist. - they stand behind their work and are only happy with a job well done. What I think could be improved: - getting a weekend appointment is difficult, if not impossible. I do however understand that it is a husband and wife dentistry and obviously they need a work life balance which I do respect. I would just like to mention that part in case anyone reading this can only manage weekend dental trips. read more

This office has declined over the years in their patient service and communication. Staff in the past 1-2 years have become less professional and I'm quite disappointed. Most recently, my insurance policy changed abruptly and Dr Choi and his staff agreed to file the paperwork as an out-of-network doctor and they set up an appointment with me. But then he changed his mind. As his staff said "{seeing me} wasn't going to be worth it". I assume she meant in terms of time and money. I understand that doctors offices are businesses. But going back on your commitments is not good for business. Also they've forgotten to send appointment reminder cards (to book your 6 month appointment), which doesn't seem like a major deal but because my insurance policy changed abruptly, I couldn't book an appointment in time to get the work I needed before the changes took place. Even given their mistake in reminding me and the changes, I had about 1 month to try to make an appointment but they couldn't even squeeze me in anywhere. My recent experience in the past year is more like a "1 star" but I'm keeping it 2 stars only because Dr. Choi was and still is a good dentist. read more

Please stay away from this office. The original owner sold his practice to a few new dentists. Unfortunately, the new dentists care more about money than patients because of the "free cleaning" or "dental discount plan". From what I've seen, dentists who heavily advertise free cleanings or discounts is only in it for the money. They like to lure you in with too good to be true deals, THEN they tell you that you need 1-3k dental work done. This practice has officially lost me as their customer and patient. Be wary of ALL dentists who offer free cleanings and deep discounts. You might be told that you need a lot of work done from your first visit. read more

Great experience here. First time visitor for a cleaning, and the whole visit took a bit over an hour. I like how the hygienist took care of me from beginning to the end. Unlike other dental offices, it's one person who calls you in and rinses your mouth. Another who takes the xray. And then a third one checking your teeth. Finally two hours later you get your cleaning done by the fourth person. Here, one person takes care of you from beginning to end, and the staff is very friendly. At the very end. Dr. Choi came in to make sure everything looks great and to answer any questions I may have. Would definitely recommend it. I visited Choice Dental this morning for removing my wisdom teeth. I had postponed to go to the dentist because my previous Dr. said one would be a little complicated and risky to remove and the other would not need to be removed. I always had to feel pain and discomfort whenever I was not feeling well. However, Dr. Kim at Choice Dental carefully watched my teeth with an X-ray, and he treated my complicated teeth so easily and perfectly right away. The good: quickly scheduled appointment, clean offices. My cavity filling must've taken all of 10 minutes, which was amazing. Quick and efficient. The bad: it was an absolutely terrifying experience. I hate the dentist, but I'm no stranger to cavities, so I settled in for an uncomfortable ride. However, the dentist did something very unexpected when she gave me the novocaine shot. She gripped my cheek, stretched it out, and then roughly jiggled IT as she gave me my injection. JIGGLED IT. Like, yanked my cheek back and forth. It caught me completely off guard and I desperately wanted to flee but there was a needle in my jaw and it couldn't have taken more than 5 seconds but it felt like 5 years. After she pulled the needle out, I was like "WHY DID YOU DO THAT" and she said "oh, to calm the patient." What? To calm the patient? Who the hell finds that relaxing? Furthermore, if she wanted to calm me, she should've looked at my white knuckles and my terrified eyes and thrashing legs and stopped. Holy crap. Nice enough lady otherwise. read more

All around efficient, timely, professional and pleasant! Every single staff member I've interacted with here has succeeded in the above mentioned traits, even during phone calls. If you're one of those dentist-wary people, this is a great place to try! I also love Dr. Choi. His bedside manner and communication skills are precisely what I think should be the industry standard. Many physicians and dentists could learn from him in terms of how to address patients inquiries and issues and in communicating with them overall. Aside from that, I think he is very skilled and knowledgeable and I absolutely trust him more than any other dentist I've seen in my life. One example: he was finally able to figure out an issue that had been giving me pain for 4 years (after an initial root canal that he was able to identify had gone wrong). I had seen 5 different dentists in that time frame to try to address this and was always made to feel like I was the crazy one... Dr. Choi validated my pain and concerns and referred me to a great endodontist who extracted the "hidden" 5th root. He has also given me ortho referrals, and I always appreciate his personal insight when he does so. A+ on building excellent rapport with patients and making them feel comfortable. Office is very well kept and waiting area is pleasant. I've never waited very long. The new technologies are also awesome. The entire office makes me feel like they genuinely care about me and my relevant needs, and I honestly think this is so hard to find. I don't want to have a harder time making appointments here by driving customers, but I really can't help raving about Choice Dental because they absolutely deserve it. read more

After reading the first review, I also made an appointment. When I called Dr. Choi was the one actually taking the phone calls. This place is great - very modern equipment and even TVs above the chair while you're being worked on. Dr. Choi is fantastic and very polite. I've been there twice and the wait was always brief and the service prompt. I saw another dentist earlier in the year that - even though the xrays showed no cavity - thought he felt a little one starting and very nonchalantly said to come back to do some drilling. I saw Dr. Choi for a second opinion (4 months later) and his reading of it was that just a sealant replacement was all that was needed since it wasn't exactly a cavity. I'm jumping on the bandwagon with this one and giving Choice Dental 5 stars! It was easy to book an appointment and the availability was great -- it's not like I had to wait 3 months to be seen. Also, there is bus stop right outside the office building so it's easy to be green to get there (biking on Main St is scary so I opted for the bus). The office is clean, good selection of magazines, and friendly staff. I saw Dr. Choi once and a female doctor the second time but I don't remember her name. Both were great and easy to talk to, I felt comfortable asking questions. The office is good about sending you reminders to schedule your next appointment and when I told them I was moving out of state, they immediately took me off their mailing list for reminders and told me they'd be happy to send my file to my new dentist. I would recommend Dr. Choi to anyone! I started going to his office in early 2010 when I moved to A2 and wouldn't go to anyone else. His office is bright and cheery, his bedside manner is stellar and they are open a few Saturdays every month. The technology he uses is impressive. The first visit he took not just x-rays, but photos of my teeth. He was able to show me exactly what teeth had cavities and where. When I came in to have them filled I barely felt the Novocain injections and he made the visit so fast and easy on me. Beware of this practice. It is part of a dental chain that heavily advertises itself on websites like groupon. They also like to entice new patients into their office from their special deals and promotions. Not only that, they like to remove negative reviews about them on yelp. Office manager has a attitude problem. They also like to pressure naive people into getting fillings for nonexistent cavities that don't hurt at all. Corporate dentist chains are for profits only. They always need to meet their quota. My experience with them today was very bad because they were talking dental jargon without explaining anything and didn't bother to answer any questions I may have. They were watching several of my teeth and didn't bother to show me what the problem areas were on the xrays. I just get the vibe from them that they only care about money and profits. Stay away from dental chains unless you want to have a TON of unnecessary expensive dental work done and ruin your teeth for the rest of your life. Always get a second opinion! I recently had my first appointment with Choice Dental and Dr. Choi, and it was a great experience. From scheduling the appointment, which was within 24 hours of the time I called to schedule, to the initial exam and cleaning, the customer service was excellent. I had been told about a year ago at a different dentist that I had two cavities that needed filling, but work piled up and I wasn't able to make it in. At my visit with Dr. Choi I was expecting to have cavities beyond repair, but the hygienist who was gentle and polite quickly told me she didn't see anything wrong. I've had a lot of dentists over the years from moving around, so I've had both awesome and terrible dentists. I've been to Choice Dental for 3 cleanings now and have been really impressed. Here's more info on my experience. Lobby: Lots of magazines and comfortable chairs, although I've never had to wait since I'm always brought right back for my appointment. Parking: The office has a parking lot right outside so it's always easy to find a spot. Efficiency: Usually my appointments only take about 30 - 45 minutes, which makes it easy to schedule for my work day. Quality: Really thorough job by the hygienist and then the dentist will come in at the end to take a closer look. I'm sitting in a coffee shop after my first appointment at Choice Dental, getting something to eat and drink as the lidocaine wears off. I think it's a rare occurrence to find oneself in awe about the quality of dental service. Perhaps I am more impressed with the outcome because, instead of relying on references from family and friends like how I usually do, I googled dentists in Ann Arbor, found this place had pretty good Yelp reviews, and that was that. Dr. Choi definitely has set a standard that unfortunately in my experience few dentists live up to. He actually cares and listens, checks in often during procedures (making sure you are okay) while walking you through it, explains EVERYTHING (like showing what the cavity looked like on the X-ray and pictures), gives his professional opinion and options, and answers your questions. At no point did I feel he was too busy to address my concerns. In the past, I've had dentists just tell me I got a cavity on a tooth, not show me the x-ray and bam, next thing I know I'm rushed along, getting my teeth drilled without understanding exactly where the cavity is, and how the dentist reached this conclusion. Plus, Dr. Choi is skilled at what he does. As a cavity-prone individual, I have had my share of drillings and fillings. At my visit, he had to replace a filling, and put in a new filling for a new cavity (boo), all of which he made as easy and painless as possible. I'm very satisfied with the work he did. It's unfortunate I'll be leaving Ann Arbor in a month, or else I would keep going here forever. I'll just have to find a dentist as caring and professional as Dr. Choi! read more

Dr. Choi and his staff are very professional, helpful, friendly, and thorough. I am moving soon and felt a little sad about it at my last dental appointment. Good dentists (and dental office staff) are hard to find! The experience- from scheduling the appointment to cleaning to fillings to payment - was as pleasant as it could possibly be. Over a few visits different hygienists took time to teach me. One focused on how to properly brush my gums as she noticed "wear" on a spot of my gumline while another hygienist gave me honest recommendations for over-the-counter whitening products. These are just a couple examples of small actions that convey a real interest in helping out with ongoing dental health. ... I've had great experiences here with the dentist in the past. The dental assistant was very knowledgable and explained in detail all of the procedures. Dr. Choi was very thorough as well and gave me multiple options for an issue I had with one of my front teeth. The bad: making an appointment with them is difficult. You might want to schedule two appointments in case they mess up one of them. Maybe someone was having a bad day, but I was told the wrong time for my appointment over the phone. I know for a fact that they messed this one up, because I always write the time down while on the phone and then also put it in my icalendar. I am assuming most of these Yelpers were still feeling good from the nitrous when they posted the positive reviews. My experience with (not our) Choice Dental was just the opposite. We had an original appointment scheduled about 4 months ago, in which they decided to cancel 12 minutes before the appointment because of weather. I understand that certain circumstances occur, however, after scheduling the 2nd appointment, Choice once again cancelled. By the time our 3rd appointment was scheduled, I called 4 days in advance to see if we could schedule another time, due to a business conflict. The receptionist was super rude, and did not make an effort to accommodate. There seem to be way too many dental options in Ann Arbor to have to settle for poor service. read more

I wrote a poor review of Choice Dental a few years back - not sure if it was on Yelp or not. That was when I first started going to them, about 3 years back. Since then I have had nothing but positive experiences. I want to update my review to reflect what a great place I now know this is! Initially I was peeved because they had me come in for fillings on 2 different appointments about a week apart. But the fillings took maybe 5 minutes each, and they didn't even require injections of novacaine or whatever they use. This made me feel like they were pushing me to have unnecessary fillings, and spreading them out so as to bill my insurance more. In retrospect, maybe they were just trying to nip my problems in the bud, and avoid what I was to experience with my later fillings. And apparently it is routine practice to schedule different sides in different appointments. Since that incident years back, I have had exactly the opposite experience. They were OK with letting me defer some fillings, (which then had to go well past their recommendations because then I got pregnant and couldn't so get fillings for a few months.) So when I finally went in to have them addressed months or maybe years after being told they would become an issue, they were pretty bad. This time, they bumped me up in their schedule because I was having pain. They knew I wanted metal fillings because they were cheaper and in the back of my mouth where no one would see them anyway, but when they attempted the fillings they discovered the white composite was more appropriate, and would last longer. But -- and this is huge -- they still billed me for the cheaper, amalgam metal price they had initially quoted me. Which, I thought, was a completely reasonable price - about $340 for 5 fillings (I have different insurance now, which doesn't cover fillings, so this was my out of pocket price). This earned back my trust in spades, and made me rethink my initial reaction to my first tiny fillings with C.D. back in 2010. Had I known then what I know now, I would have totally given them the benefit of the doubt. Every time I go into this office, I am pleased with my choice. Last time I was there, Dr. Choi himself was working the front desk, and checked me in. He is a super nice guy, and so are his staff! I heart you, Choice Dental! read more

My previous dentist made me scared and nervous to ever go back to see a dentist. My last dentist ruined my teeth and always made feel like i had gotten punched in the face after leaving. After going here I no longer feel that way. They made me feel very comfortable and cared about my well being. love Choice Dental. I just had my third appointment there today and it couldn't have been better. I arrived there early this morning--ONE WEEK early in fact! yes, my appointment was for Feb. 9, not Feb. 2. but the wonderful office manager (whose name I've forgotten, darn it) managed to work me in and I didn't even have to wait. it turns out that since Dr. Choi had done most of the prep work at the previous appointment, they were able to see me without upsetting their schedule at all. my permanent crown had also come in early, so they were able to put that in. it fit PERFECTLY. no drill involved at all. I was in and out of there in 20 minutes. best crown experience I've ever had. the only reason I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5 is that they don't have nitrous oxide. but I have to say Dr. Choi did a root canal and I only had local anesthetic, so even tho I was still nervous, it didn't hurt. read more

We have been going to this office and this doctor for approximately 8 years. My partner did not want to wait 4 months to get his cleaning ( not sure why it was a 4 month wait for the bi annual six month cleaning). An appointment was made at another dentist office for the regular cleaning. The new hygienist and dentist immediately noticed gum disease that had been happening for years. There was bone loss because of this. It is truly disturbing that this was never mentioned and treated at Choice Dental. We tried calling to discuss this matter. Just received a call. It seems there is a differ very in opinion from the folks at Choice Dental and the new dentist. We are going to stick with the new dentist. read more

As an individual who's had plenty of dental work done since at least the 2nd grade, I'd like to give Choice Dental 5 stars. The office is clean and inviting. I made a last minute appointment (meaning, a few days prior), which didn't seem to be a problem. I was seen seen promptly at my appointment time - which is important to me (both of my parents are physicians with private practices, and I know how it can be to be made to wait beyond that which is reasonable). I was treated by Dr. Lim. I found her manner to be both professional and courteous. Her work has been as good as any I've had. My experience at Choice Dental differed a bit from those of the other reviewers. Dr. Choi did seem like a super nice guy, although since I didn't need any work done I only spoke with him for about 30 seconds at the very end of my appointment so I can't really attest to his skills as a dentist. Everyone in the office WAS quite friendly throughout my appointment, but I did have a couple of issues - mainly related to the desk staff and certain methods used by the hygienist. I understand that cleanings and x-rays aren't supposed to be comfortable by any means, but every other time I've had x-rays performed in the past they have always used those paper bite-strip things. At Choice Dental, they used some heavy metal contraption with plastic over it that was anchored by the roof of my mouth throughout the entirety of the x-rays. I mentioned to the hygienist that it was a bit uncomfortable, but she brushed me off, stating simply "it's fine." It wasn't fine; in fact I ended up with two large welts on the roof of my mouth after the fact. It also seemed that she was taking far more x-ray images than I was used to. When asked about this, I was told "We always do that.", then had a good 3-4 more bouts of radiation pushed through my face. Now, before you start thinking that I'm some control freak who nitpicks during dental procedures, I only said something after she had taken over ten x-rays. Ten. All for someone who only boasts 26 adult teeth, due to extraction surgery as a child and not having developed two of my wisdom teeth. I understand the necessity of being thorough, especially in areas such as dentistry, but I also feel that it's important to listen to the patient, which leads me to my next gripe... About a month after my appointment, I received a bill in the mail totaling $50 for "additional x-rays." I had anticipated something along these lines happening, but there was a handwritten note attached to the bill that said (and I quote) "Your insurance company will not cover the costs of your additional x-rays. The balance is YOUR responsibility.", as if I had been dodging the payment for months or something. It was the first bill I had received! I mailed them a check the same day, but obviously I was none too thrilled about the surly note OR that fact that the entire situation could have been avoided if the hygienist would have just listened to me in the first place. It's really a shame; I was hoping Choice Dental would end up as my long time dentist as well as a place I could bring my family.
