July 27, 2022 Lower back pain is gone, just mostly slight discomfort. Spinal fusion was performed on July 18, and I am out of Cedars Marina Del Rey Hospital and at California Rehabilitation Institute in Century City for a week now. I have had numerous spine surgeries in the past, all done by the very skillful Dr. Khurana. All of them have given me total pain relief within a week or two. No more serious pain meds are needed, just Gabapentin and Tylenol. I would very much like to thank Dr. Khurana and his skilled team for making my life pain free. It is my great pleasure to give Dr Sanjay Khurana a five star rating. I am a retired surgeon that suffered a catastrophic disc rupture with 16 by 9 mm extrusion that broke off L2/3 and entered my spinal canal. The diagnosis was complicated by prior back issues and a recent post motor vehicle accident MRI that was unremarkable. The accident was in June and MRI was in July and by September the pain was debilitating and under pain management I was taking methadone and OxyContin like candy. Short story a renowned Spine surgeon based on the July MRI diagnosed Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. WRONG. Referred to Dr Khurana for a second opinion who did a long and compassionate examination and ordered a new MRI that revealed the monster fragment. Dr Khurana , broke his schedule and operated on me within 3 days as emergency. With in a week post op I was opioid free. I have to preface my comments about my experience with Dr. Khurana and his staff with the fact that I have never been a fan of allopathic medicine, doctors and especially surgeons would be a massive understatement. Almost every friend and family member that's ever had to have surgery, especially back surgery has only come out worse for the wear. Or having to go back multiple times and never recovering partially or fully. I was referred by my primary care physician who could not stop raving about Dr. Khurana as he had fixed one of those bad surgeries I mentioned. Needless to say I was not excited but the pain I was experiencing with my degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis and bulging discs was having a tremendous effect on my mental well-being and ability to do the simplest tasks. Just say I was depressed would've been an understatement. Even though the spinal fusion surgery on my L4 L5 disc's was due before the Covid pandemic hit I was forced to wait three years for my surgery. He advised me if I woke up paralyzed I should call immediately. It was a long three years and not because of the pandemic itself. Possible paralysis can be horrifying consideration. Because I was a Medicare patient I had the surgery performed at St. John's hospital. I happen to have a strange condition where I am highly resistant to anesthesia and have woken up twice during minor surgeries and although by now I was completely unafraid of the surgery itself because I knew I was in such good hands (I had three years to do a lot of research on Dr. Khurana) but the anesthesia situation was still terrifying. I knew the surgery would be longer and more complicated than originally planned but the anesthesiologist completely understood my legitimate concern. To be totally honest I don't remember a thing after getting to the hospital after prepping myself early that morning. And afterwards there was much less pain than I expected and after a year and a half I'm happy to report after getting fresh imaging and consulting with Dr. Khurana last week found out that the surgery was a complete success. I've spoken to surgeons in the past, For myself and as support for friends and family and I have never ever met a surgeon as warm and genuinely caring as this wonderful man. On top of that he also has the patience of a saint. I am not an easy patient, I am well aware of that. But no matter how many phone calls I made and my endless questions and concerns everyone from reception to his medical assistant always treated me with kindness and compassion, like a human being and not just a patient or a file number. After the summer I will be going back to have the screws taken out of my back since the bone grafting was so successful and this time they will be no fear involved whatsoever. It's been five years since we started our journey. It's not over yet and hopefully my DDD will not require any future surgeries. But should I ever need another you can trust I wouldn't hesitate to reach out to his office again. I'm grateful that he is so much younger than me and hope he never leaves the Los Angeles area. Anyone who has the opportunity to have this extraordinarily gifted and compassionate surgeon perform a procedure on them they are incredibly blessed. I could not recommend anyone better for spinal issues! His knowledge, care and follow thru are unsurpassed! He is VERY conservative in treatment and tries to rectify the problems without surgery. When I was under his care we did still need to do a double fusion on my neck after Epidurals and PT failed. He informed me that my range of motion might be slightly limited. Dr Khurana has been very influential in my life and he is humble about it, that he probably doesn't realize that. I am a Spine and Sports Medicine physical therapist that has been helping people with debilitating spinal pain. I only bring that up because when I had back surgery, he demonstrated good bedside manner, compassion, expertise and most importantly, I've been able to perform at a high level... lifting weights and being active with three kids 15 years later. If you want the best spin surgeon, you go to Dr. Khurana. He truly cares about wanting to fix any issue you have with your spine. I had L3-4 to L5-S1 fused back in 2001 by another well-known surgeon in Los Angeles and ended up having to fuse L1-2 to L2-3 in September 2020 and disk replacement (ADR) at C5-6, C6-7 in December 2020 by Dr. Khurana. The difference was night and day. Not only was Dr. Khurana's technique different but my recovery time was so much easier. He always made himself available to answer any questions and always checked-up on me post-surgery. I am extremely happy the my post-surgery results and recommend Dr. Khurana highly. Dr Sanjay Khurana is a wonderful human being, a brilliant physician and an excellent surgeon! About a year ago, without any warning, I had difficulty walking, I also had burning sensations in my arms and hands. I saw neurologists and sought opinions from four surgeons. Some recommended two and three disk cervical fusion, which I wanted to avoid. Dr. Khurana took the time to thoroughly explain my MRI and let me know that my spinal compression had to be addressed. As the solution, he recommended two artificial disk replacements. When I had more questions, he called me at 8pm one evening and patiently answered all my questions before surgery. How many surgeons do that? Now, four months later, I'm very happy to report that my surgery was flawless! I have two artificial disks and everything related to my surgery has healed perfectly. Additionally, Dr. Khurana's Medical Assistant Brianna and every member of his staff are very polite, efficient and a pleasure to work with. The Commons Clinic where I had the surgery, my Anesthesiologist and the nurses were also amazing. I am a 26 year old woman who is in recovery from a two level artificial disc replacement surgery. Thanks to Dr. Khurana and his staff, I am finally able to plan my life post back pain. Prior to seeing Dr. Khurana, I saw five different doctors in which I was told my MRI did not look "that bad" and that I was just getting older. Unlike others, Dr. Khurana believed me and my pain. He affirmed that it was not normal for a 26 year old to have debilitating back pain. Shortly after working with him, it became clear that I required two lower lumbar disk replacements. I have been suffering from neck/arm pain for the past 8 mos. I've been to 3 different "experts" & no one would write a Rx for me to go in for MRIs...even though nothing else was working: epidurals, cortisone, meds. As a prior gymnast & dancer, I know my body & I know when I started losing the feeling down my hands & then my fingers started to get freezing cold, the problem was a lot more serious than the doctor I was seeing was seeing. I finally demanded he write ard for MRIs on both shoulders & my cervical spine & through some research was referred to Dr. Khurana - who, after taking one look at all my tests, reports, etc. said I needed emergency surgery or I'd end up with permanent nerve damage. I wonder - if my previous dr had listened to me - would I be in the situation I now find myself? Of course, we can't look back, only forward & I am so lucky that I was directed to Dr Khurana, who went over everything with me in great detail & explained the surgery so that even my husband, who doesn't know anything about anything re: medical terms, procedures & the like, completely understood & felt 100% confident when we left. The surgery is pretty extensive: Dr Khurana will be fusing my C3/4 & then totally replacing my discs at C5/6 & C6/7 & any time one goes in for surgery, especially anything related to the spine, it is nerve-wracking, to say the least. But everyone in the office - from the front desk to Amanda & Elaine &, especially, Dr Khurana made me feel like I was in the best hands possible. My appointment was on a Wednesday & Jessica, who schedules the surgeries, called me the next day & was able to get me in w/in a week - pretty unheard of these days. I go in tomorrow morning & have been told that, while the recovery may be pretty tough, I am expected to feel relief from the excruciating pain I've been living with pretty immediately. This man is nothing short of a brilliant miracle worker. I had seen three other surgeons that one is before I'm a very serious and life-changing surgery on my spine and I wasn't very optimistic at all. Luckily my urologist mentioned Dr. Khurana and I was fortunate enough to have a consultation with him where he presented me his surgical solution, which catered more to my active lifestyle. And ultimately, it was a better fit. Believe it or not, I had three surgeries in one day... A triple lumbar fusion, sciatic decompression and double cervical fusion. These three surgeries were able to give me the relief I needed, and help me avoid a single surgery (laminoplasty) at the age of 40 that is usually performed on someone around the age of 70. I still may to have that surgery someday, but at least I was able to retain my active lifestyle and have healing that went way above and beyond what I was expecting. I had regained feeling on several key points on my body and the obstructed or failed functionality of other daily functions were also rectified and returned to their pre-accident condition. I was and am thrilled to discuss this as everyone has horror stories when it comes to back or spinal surgeries...I however, do not. I have a great story and have a brilliant surgeon with a HUGE heart and a passion for helping others heal. It's no wonder that so many athletes worldwide will travel 20+ hours to see him...and his local clients are loyal & enthusiastic as well. I also didn't know at the time, but there was once an incident where Harrison Ford crashed his airplane on the Santa Monica Golf Course. Lucky for him, Dr. Khurana was golfing at the time and successfully rescued Harrison from the crash and was able to get some volunteers to put soil on the leaking gasoline to keep it from igniting. Now that's a pretty courageous, passionate and talented person I've described...and it's all true. I'm so happy he's my surgeon. I won't let anyone else ever touch my spine. No MRI only given a prescription for physical therapy, and meds. This review is 1 year and a month post S1-L5 and L5-L4 microdiscectomy. After an injury at an obstacle course race that was completely my fault, load over capacity on a heavy lift, I had lumbar pain that eventually became a sciatic pain that was most felt in my left calf. I started Physical Therapy to resolve the issue, but in my case and situation, it was not resolving the issue the way we wanted it. The pain kept coming back immediately when walking, even after performing exercises that would relieve it. My PT recommended a few surgeons to talk to, and after looking at DISC I chose to go see Dr. Khurana. I figured if DISC gets Red Bull athletes back to performing, I would be in capable hands. Another reason I chose Dr. Khurana was that he understood why I had the injury and what I needed to do to get past it. There was no "oh you must have surgery" or "we can do surgery but never flip that 400lbs tire again". Upon initial consultation and look at my MRI, we both agreed to continue PT for a few more weeks to make sure that PT was not progressing for "me" and what I wanted to continue doing. As another reviewer stated, these things are not one size fits all. Make sure your PT, surgeon AND YOU are in line with your life goals. I felt that Dr. Khurana, and the entire DISC staff, cared about my situation and wanted to get me back to where I wanted to be. I wanted to race again that year, wanted to carry 70lbs buckets uphill, wanted to trail run for 30+ miles, wanted to crawl under barbwire, wanted to blah blah blah. Dr. Khurana understood where I wanted to be as an athlete and where I was before the injury and I felt his consultation kept all this in mind. I elected to have the surgery performed, and everything was super smooth. In on a Friday morning, out that evening and I was back to work on Monday. I was back to racing again in just over six months (Tahoe Ultra Beast, aroo!). My case is not all cases, as I had done a ton of work during the previous years that would have been considered pre-hab. The surgery experience was excellent. Everyone was very caring and explained everything to me in as much detail as I wanted. I would do it again if I "had" to. I was never second-guessing the decision. All of the post-op appointments were the same caliber. Dr. Khurana explained what I may experience in the next year or two as I started training again, so while sometimes I am alarmed thinking "uh...should I be feeling this now?" between Dr. Khurana and my PT I am guided in the right direction. My review is LONG OVERDUE ...Anyone with back problems knows "One size DOES NOT fit all". A friend of mine with escalating back issues, was asking for some information, on my surgeries. She is only 3 years out- from her last surgery with another doctor. I came to Yelp to get some information, on current doctors, etc. in this area. Dr. Khurana did my 3 surgeries OVER 10 years ago. He was understanding, and proceeded slowly with my treatment. I was very fearful of any fusion after years earlier seeing my Mother temporally being unable to walk after another doctor's spinal surgery. Dr Khurana is an excellent surgeon. He's always late, but his work is outstanding. The problem (which is why we are giving a 2 star rating) is his office staff. Especially his surgery scheduler and workers compensation person. She never answers the phone nor returns any phone calls. This is not only a problem for patients, but for attorneys and other doctors as well. This creates frustration on the part of patients in pain because they can't get the necessary treatment. They feel as though they're not important at all-it is obvious the young lady has no empathy and has been fortunate to have never experienced chronic pain. Therefore the doctor is useless because the office staff isn't allowing him to be utilized to his pote Update: Since the previous review, the Physician Assistant immediately called and got the ball rolling. The scheduler is now answering her phone, returning phone calls, and has managed to request and schedule a surgery. We much appreciate the vast improvements in service! read more

I have been dealing with spinal issues since 2009 and thanks to the wonderful expertise of Dr Khurana, it has been a lot more manageable. I had a microdisectomy on my L4-5 region in 2012 & most recently (July 2020), cervical ADR 3/4. Both times I felt instant relief and very minimal post surgical pain. The best spine surgeon in the business IMO. He's recognized as a Super Doctor for a reason. Important training you want to look for in a spine surgeon doing fusions, which Dr Khurana has, is a fellowship in spine reconstruction because the doctor is removing certain parts of your spine and putting it back together with implants like a car engine that's taken apart and put back together. I've had several surgeries with Dr Khurana... 2019: L4L5/L5S1 fusion, instrumentation, and decompression and 2020: L4L5/L5S1 hardware removal from the 2019 fusion and C5C6 disc replacement. For my neck, I had radiating pain/ongoing tingling down both arms which was exacerbated even from carrying groceries and severe chronic pain in the lower back due to having very little disc material left and couldn't sit long. After the 2019 fusion, I was walking the next morning as soon as I was allowed and my neck disc replacement was a complete success getting rid of the pain down both arms. Dr Khurana is efficient and to the point, answers all your questions, and will diagnose your condition very accurately. He has a great team taking care of patients in different capacities such as his PA, medical assistants, schedulers, billers, surgery staff, etc.. If you're considering spine surgery or want a consultation to discuss a game plan to rehab your spine, I highly recommend you see Dr Khurana. read more

Hands down some of the best medical care I have ever received. I've had back problems for almost 13 years, and I've seen dozens of the top specialists and surgeons in the Los Angeles area throughout the years. I came to Dr. Khurana in August with excruciating sciatica due to a severe herniation at L4L5 and moderate herniation at L5S1. I had had a previous microdiscectomy at those same levels almost 10 years prior which made things a little trickier, and the three surgeon opinions I got did not all agree on what to do with me. Dr. Khurana spent probably almost an hour with me in-office, and then another 30-45 minutes with me on the phone talking me through my options and what he would recommend if it were him or a family member going through the situation. Never once did he tell me I should see HIM for the procedure, only what he thought would be the smartest and safest course of action for me. Ultimately, I ended up scheduling a repeat microdiscectomy with him and am so happy with my decision. His office is easy to get ahold of, he is consistently on-time (even early!), and made the surgery scheduling process absolutely seamless. Dr. Khurana's PA, Elaine, could not possibly be more knowledgable or helpful. They've both been incredibly accessible to me both before and after surgery, answering all 1000+ of my questions thoroughly. Dr. Khurana does his surgeries at DISC, which felt like I was getting royal treatment compared to the two surgeries I've had at Cedars Sinai hospital.
