Our private tour of the…read moreDead Horse Point Singletrack on April 11th was a massive disappointment, largely due to Rim Tours' misleading staff and lack of basic safety protocols. Before booking, I explicitly called their office to inquire about the trail's difficulty. Their representative adamantly assured me that this was an easy, beginner-friendly ride. That was completely false. The trail features rocky, technical terrain. When confronted about this later, management simply pointed to the "intermediate" label on their website, completely ignoring the blatant misrepresentation by their own sales team over the phone. To make matters worse, we were caught in a severe storm. While I understand a standard "rain or shine" policy, we were exposed to active thunder and lightning out on the trail. A competent outfitter would prioritize safety and pull their clients off an exposed plateau during a lightning storm. Instead, because we had to end the ride early to avoid being struck by lightning, Rim Tours hid behind their cancellation policy and refused to offer any kind of refund or credit, claiming the guide deemed it "appropriate to proceed." If you value honest communication and your own personal safety, do not book with Rim Tours. They will tell you whatever you want to hear to get your credit card, and once the tour starts, you are completely on your own.

Going down the trail towards frisco is quite fun and easy and you are mostly going downhill. Coming back up however is a bit of a challenge if you are not used to the altitude. We we able to complete it. The views are so worth it. The air is really cool and smells really fresh. Lots of beautiful trees, plants etc all naturally growing. The river is very powerful and sounds so good while biking. If you happen to rent a by a ridden bike rentals off Main Street you can literally bike from Main Street to this trial. That's what we did and we absolutely enjoyed every minute of it. Great trail!

We chose this trail because its only about 2.8mi to do the Mesa Rim Loop trail v the Cherry Creek Trail to the loop (about 6 mi). This hike is very exposed to the elements so come prepared (hat, water, sunglasses, layers in non-summer). There are lots of prairie dogs along the trail, but that also means rattlesnakes and coyotes, so please keep your dog on leash despite the wide open temptation to let them run free. There are also many cyclists on the trail. The trail is well-marked with great views of the mountains and is easy enough for young kids, too.

This is a spacious place that only has a loop (about 5 miles all the way from the start to finish) so you will never get lost there. It's got some shades so despite the name you will be able to rest and catch some breath in a shaded area if you don't want to be in the sun. The trail is moderate and is mainly sandy which I liked; it's not too burdensome for your knees if you have knee problem. We also saw people with horses and donkeys so there should be some horse/donkey riding place where they offer such service (watch out for their droppings on the trail!) It also offers beautiful views of nearby buttes and you will be able to take great pictures there. Can't wait to go back there again!

Rich Creek Trail is a moderate hike in the Buffalo Peak Wilderness near the town of Fairplay. This…read moreparticular trail is on the outskirts of the Weston Pass Campground, with the small trailhead parking lot just prior. A fairly simple out and back trail it may be, however the majority of the trail sits alongside Rich Creek. So for the duration of the hike you hear the wonderful sounds of the rushing creek. Absolutely splendid! With all the rain we've gotten this season, it's no surprise that nature is putting on a show earlier than normal. The abundant evergreens are looking more like summer than mid spring. The vibrant trees definitely added an extra pop of color during the hike and I certainly wasn't complaining. The trail is well marked, and at one point you will have to cross the creek. Be prepared to add some extra wood to the makeshift bridge, because it was on its last leg as I crossed. Tread lightly. I did see some stunning bluebirds during my time out here. Otherwise no major wildlife to be found. 5.5 miles roundtrip. 1,161 ft. elevation gain. 2.5 hours total. For a Memorial Day Weekend hike, I was very content with this trail. I bet this trail is even more beautiful in the Fall. Saw about 9 or 10 people the whole time. Parking lot has 7-8 spots, so if you're going on a Summer weekend it might fill up. Hiking season has begun!

Fishing, birding, plenty of Wildlife....even spotted a few beavers near a small lake. Sure the unpaved path in will beat up your car...but it is worth it. Highly recommended for an easy 2-3 day backpacking excursion.
