We were super excited to hear about this Thai restaurant when they first opened up last year. We stopped in to try it during their first soft opening with high hopes. However, because they were still getting things ready and may have not been fully prepared for what to expect, sadly it didn't quite hit the mark for us. Fast forward a year later, we gave them another try. The decor had drastically changed. Let me break this down a bit. The restaurant was filled with mismatched decor and some side activities - jewelery sales, knick knacks of sorts, random grocery items, etc. It gave a vibe of too much clutter. The ambience was a mixture of country, sprinkled with some Asian flare, and a hint of class trying to break through. It felt like too much focused on side items versus focusing on the marvel and delight of showcasing real authentic Thai food cuisine. Which brings us to the food. This was also a mixture of East meets West cuisine - a wide variety of American and Asian options. We had tried appetizers and a few main dishes to get the full experience. We had the sampler appetizers - eggrolls (decent, a bit greasy), the cheese wontons ( good), and jalapeno wontons (different and very good). We had the drunken noodles - it was packed with good vegetables, good texture and consistency, but lacked the flavor I was expecting. It was bland and too simple. The other entree we had was the Beef Laab/Salad. The flavor was interesting - it had more of a fusion flare taste versus the authentic Thai Laab flavoring I was expecting. Also, laab should always be eaten with sticky rice and we were quite disappointed they did not have that as an option. Lastly, we had the Papaya Salad. This is a staple dish and tradition of Thai cuisine. It's tricky to perfect the right mixture of ingredients with the right amount of flavoring. There are also two ways to prepare it-the Laotian way or the Thai way. We asked for the Thai way. It was not as flavorful or spicy as we had expected...yet another dish quite bland. The overall presentation of the entrees were beautiful and it had wonderful ingredients, but it just lacked the flavor of true authentic Thai cuisine. The service was friendly. Our server was very nice and personable. He made the overall experience much nicer and more enjoyable. This place is worth a try as everyone has different opinions and taste buds. If you're looking to find the most tasteless Thai food with a honky-tonk ambiance, fresh out of Blues Brothers with a brain-numbing 6th-grade level menu, this is your place. Went to spice up the all-too-boring fried rice entrée, only to find a creamer on the table full of old, dried-up, crushed pepper flakes. No highfalutin chili sauce from these cattle partners. I was waiting for a campfire with banjo music to start at any moment. Someone forgot to put some Thia in the Thia Restaurant. Sorry, but $48 for two people having lunch? In downtown Pine City? Wow! My husband and I were driving from Duluth to the cities, and were in the mood for Thai. Found this little place in pine city and not really sure how it would be. My husband ordered the tom yum and I ordered the tom kha. Wow flavor explosion! Maybe the best versions of either I have ever had. I would drive back just for these soups! Personally I like my soups a bit more sour and these both had amazing tang. Not sure if it was lime juice or tamarind or maybe a combination of the two. But whatever it was it was perfect and delicious! Also I personally don't like when these soups have too much fish sauce. And these did not. Definitely an unexpected gem. Wish I had this restaurant in my neighborhood! And I will make a point to stop when passing through next time! Also as a dessert we had the mango mochi and a honeydew tea with passion fruit boba.
