We had a very disappointing experience at Kie-Gol-Lanee Logan Square. The hostess was warm and welcoming, but the service quickly became one of the strangest restaurant experiences we've ever had. Our server came over to take our drink order, but I was trying to find the Watermelon Margarita among several small menus. Before I could locate it, she simply walked away instead of waiting another few seconds. It felt abrupt and confusing. After she left, I found the drink so I'd be ready when she returned. When she came back, I ordered the Watermelon Margarita off the menu, assuming it was a signature cocktail. Instead, she asked which tequila I wanted, so I pointed to the exact drink. The interaction was confusing. Throughout ordering, she repeatedly responded with the same one. We couldn't tell if she was new, unfamiliar with the menu, or simply not communicating well. Ordering was frustrating. The server made us feel rushed, as though we were expected to order our entire meal all at once without any explanation or guidance. We never felt comfortable asking questions because every interaction was so awkward. We ended up pointing to nearly everything we wanted, with no explanation of how the menu worked or what was included with each dish. For example, we ordered the chapulines (crickets) and chips and salsa, which came with beans, but we only found that out once it arrived. Every interaction felt rushed and confusing, and the server just wasn't able to communicate clearly. I'm not one to complain at a restaurant, but by the end of the meal I had come close to doing everything short of sending food back and walking out. That's how off the whole experience felt. We've eaten at countless Mexican restaurants, including many while traveling abroad, and we've never experienced service quite like this. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for it. - Tinga Tostadas ($20):Just okay. Nothing memorable or worth the price. - Vegetarian Tlayuda ($26):This traditional dish was extremely disappointing. If you're going to offer a vegetarian version of a traditional dish, it should still be flavorful and satisfying. This one wasn't. - Fish Taco Special:Mediocre and overpriced. What surprised us most was that nearly everything arrived lukewarm rather than hot, which made the meal even more disappointing. The restaurant itself is also incredibly loud. There's virtually no sound absorption, so we had to talk very loudly just to hear each other throughout dinner. The one bright spot was dessert. We ordered it to go, and it was excellent -- easily the best thing we had all evening. I know the Kie-Gol-Lanee name carries a Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction, which is part of why we were so excited to try this location. But based on our visit, this Logan Square outpost didn't come close to living up to that reputation. Overall, Kie Goi Lanee felt overpriced, underwhelming, and not at all worth the hype. Between the confusing and uncomfortable service, mediocre food, and high prices, the entire experience left us disappointed. If you want to run a great restaurant, at least offer some kind of introduction or guidance to make guests feel welcome. I shouldn't have to research a menu beforehand just to make sure I order something good. We love Mexican food and eat it often, so we were genuinely excited to try this restaurant. I've been to the Kie-Gol-Lanee in Uptown before, but met up with some friends for Restaurant Week brunch at their Logan Square location this time. The restaurant is located in a relatively quiet area, but the environment inside was vibrant, with seemingly every table filled. For the drink, I got a Champurrado, a kind of hot chocolate. It was chocolatey, but not very rich. Next, I tried the Dos Tamales Divorciados, which is very delicious. Each tamale had its own unique flavor but both tasted so good. I also love that it came with eggs and rice. I also got to try the tlayuda, which I'm honestly not a big fan of and still am not. Finally, the tres leches french toast is fine, but I'm not really sure about the execution. The center of the toast was a bit too soggy for my taste, and the random assortment of fruit did not feel cohesive with the dish. Service was kind of slow when we went, but that is probably to be expected because of the Restaurant Week rush. Thoroughly unimpressed. I had just came back from Mexico and was craving something authentic. The food was no better than 90% of the local restaurants in Baja Sur. The dark mole had a weird aftertaste, and they charge for chips and salsa which should be free at their price points. The tres leches is amazing though and the main positive part of the meal. Service was friendly but food took an hour to arrive! $100 per person for average Mexican food and drinks is the height of pretentiousness. read more

We were still reeling from the incredible dining experience at Kie-Gol-Lanee in Logan square though we frequent the original location in Uptown. This authentic Oaxacan gem is a must-visit for anyone craving traditional Mexican flavors. We loved the tamales and the Tlayuda was a game changer. The crispy tortilla, tender cecina meat,black beans and quesillo were melded together in harmony. Luigi, the mixologists and our server at the same time was so talented crafting unique concoctions that perfectly complement the bold flavors of Oaxacan cuisine. The mezcal shots at the end of our dinner culminated our exceptional experience. I highly recommend this place for a different take on Mexican flare. read more

Hidden gem alert! Ok well all truth me told, I love mole of all kinds. And indeed all kinds they did have. We made a quick reservation OpenTable and they had seating for that night. Traffic got the best of us but they were understanding and sat us. We saw that the place is quite cozy but colorful and vibrant. There had to have been less than 50 tables. The walls had beautiful murals on them. I ordered the Paloma that reminded me of summer almost instantly. We ordered the green mole pork tamale and pollo with the mole rojo. The tamales came out with the banana wrapping and I just knew we were in for a treat. The mole verde (green) was my favorite because it wasn't too sweet and had deep flavors. I really wish we got to try the tlayuda but it was just the hubs and I and we did not want to over do it. For our main course, we ordered the arrachera with the huilacoche mole and knob onions. That meal knocked it out the park for me, perfectly cooked and that mole was the perfect accompaniment to the meal. Let's also not to forget the honorable mention, tortillas made in house, perfect touch. The service was spot on and we date a great date night. Residing down the block, we've seen numerous restaurants come and go at this location, so we had to question another Mexican Restaurant, this one with an odd name to recall,, moving in. Soon after opening, it became clear by both the numbers in the room/outside patio, and by reports from neighbors and friends, that this was not your average restaurant. The service was great, and our server Elio couldn't have been nicer, more informed, or accommodating. Food was outstanding, with many bests from starters to dessert. The Mezcal produced by the family owners, was my daughter's all-time favorite margarita, with a blast of Smokey flavor in their own freshly squeezed, tamarind juice . My wife thoroughly loved the Horchata. The tortilla chips were the best I've had, and both salsas were delicious. It came with a complementary bean dip that was warm, packed with flavor, and velvety in texture. Nopales salad was fresh and refreshing. All their starters on the menu looked inviting. The Tlayudas, a Oaxaca favorite, was so delicious, you don't wanna stop eating. We had the vegetarian version with plenty marinated mushrooms, grilled zucchini. Oaxaca cheese, all in a healthy portion. The menu has a wide array of vegetarian options. The Enchiladas De Pollo with Mole arrived as a beautiful presentation, and the wife said it was amazing. The daughter also said the Tres Leches was her all time favorite, and she's had many. The restrooms were spacious and clean, and the decor of the restaurant included art evoking the mood and culture of Oaxaca region. This is a must for some fantastic food. It was nicely decorated, and they had some great dishes and drinks. The dining area is spacious and can become loud when there are many groups nearby. Nonetheless, we had a great time and were able to try many different dishes and desserts. We even tried the grasshoppers. Came here for brunch w a girlfriend and am glad that Kie-Gol-Lanee opened up a second location here in Logan Square. Items on the lunch/brunch menu all sounded intriguing and I had a hard time choosing what I wanted. I ended up going for the huevos con nopales and my friend got the chilaquiles with chorizo. Appreciated the free chips and bean dip that were on the house and our entrees were massive - we both couldn't finish everything on our plates! My dish came with corn tortillas made in house that i enjoyed- I most likely won't order the same dish as my eggs were overly scrambled and tasted rubbery. Service lagged at times despite it being slow in the restaurant and I had to wave down our server a few times. I had previous heard that their other location was on the bib gourmand list so we were eager to try and it lived up to the hype. We had great service that was attentive to water refills, generally bubbly and going above to even wipe the table crumbs between courses. The food - yum! Everything we had was delicious. The juice you could tell was fresh in the mimosas. The strawberry guava was particularly scrumptious. The main course had great flavor and was the perfect size. The dessert is really what pushed this experience to the top. Delicious - we tried the tres leches french toast and the budin de manzana and they were both show stoppers. Food was phenomenal! My families favorite Mexican restaurant in Wilmette closed down a few years ago, and after trying kie-gol-lanee I was excited to tell them I have found a replacement! The guacamole was awesome, super fresh. If you like a sweeter margarita, try the strawberry guava. I'm partial to more of a citrus flavor, so it wasn't my favorite, but still good. The mole enchiladas were the star of the show for me. The restaurant itself is cute, fitting around 40-50 people so it's more intimate. By far my favorite area, making the very best food this country has to offer is Oaxacan cuisine from (of course) the state of Oaxaca (Duh) located in Southern Mexico. Corn and chili peppers are a main staple for this food, but it's their "Mole" sauces that always get my attention! Last night I went to Kie-Gol-Lanee (the one in Logan Square) that served very original Oaxcan food that didn't disappoint. The owners and the people working here are "Spot-on"! We (my wife and I) started our dinner with guacamole and chips then moved on to Enchiladas De Pollo and Camarones a la Diabla; everything brought to our table was fantastic. When we moved to Chicago three years ago from Los Angeles, I thought I would miss all of my East L.A. Mexican restaurants. To my surprise, Chicago not only met my L.A. mexican food expectations, but actually surpassed it. Places like Kie-Gol-Lanee make it a a joy to have here! read more

I was so excited to hear this was coming to Logan. We've dined at the Uptown location and found the food outstanding. We were big fans of Masa Azul and not much since has had staying power until now. Right now it's still flying under the radar and easy to get in, I expect that to change soon. The location has nice, intimate indoors with a small patio on Francisco. We each started witha spicy mezcal margarita. They serve black beans with chips (vegetarian). We opted not to get an appetizer knowing how generous the portions are. Husband ordered the arracherra and I the shrimp diablo. We both thoroughly enjoyed our choices along with the handmade tortillas. There were a few wrinkles in service. I visited this spot when it was Mezcalas, and it closed shortly after my visit last year. I had seen Kie-Gol-Lanee on various top restaurant lists and it had been on my list to try for a while, and it didn't disappoint. The food and service were excellent. It is a family run business, as one of the kids was helping out in the dining room, and he was adorable. It is a small spot, so be sure to grab a reservation, and parking is hit or miss, but you can usually find a spot within a few blocks. Don't miss the excellent cocktails as well! read more

Really wonderful and unique cocktails and food, stellar service. My sister heard about this place and was intrigued by the specials. We made the 45 minute drive from the burbs on a Sunday evening and it was completely worth the drive. We enjoyed their lovely patio, and parking was easy. Lots of great vegetarian options. Welcome to the neighborhood! My friend and I ate at Kie Gol Lanee for brunch on Sunday. We shared the french toast topped with fruit and tres leches sauce and 2 tamales. We had the chicken mole rojo tamale and the pork with mole verde tamale. Everything was excellent!! I've been to Mexico City several times and also to Oaxaca - both cities are food meccas that I plan to keep visiting often and so I was excited to see this restaurant to open a location close to me for Oaxacan style cuisine. We got two prix fixe meals so we could try a variety of things - we got a Oaxacan style pork mole verde tamale, nopales, enchiladas de pollo, barbacoa de borrego, tres leches and flan. The tamale wrapped in a banana leaf melted in my mouth. The barbacoa was falling off the bone. Everything I ate was incredible - flavorful, cooked to perfection. The server was fast and friendly as were the whole staff. Candlelit inside with music at an audible but pleasant volume. The food held up to some of the higher end restaurants I've been to in Oaxaca. They have a good selection of mezcal - we tried the tobala - smoky and smooth. Also had some champurrado that was lovely. Highly recommend this restaurant! read more

The space is pleasant and even charming with several nicely done murals in a very colorful Mexican style decorating the walls. The staff are pleasant and likable and efficient. The food was marvelous. We were hoping for unusually good but what we got was well beyond our highest expectations, The attention to detail in the kitchen was exceptional. There may be a magician hiding back there in the kitchen. Every aspect of every dish we tried was done to perfection. I ordered the Tlayudos vegetarianos and she tried the Quesadillas and we finished with an enticing dessert called Pastel de Calabaza. Even the side salad (normally a throwaway dish of no consequence) was superb . We are vegans (of the wobbly variety - we consider shrimp an honorary vegetable) and there were several unusually appealing vegan/veggie possibilities. The background music was well chosen and kept at a moderate level so conversation was easily possible. It has not been open long. Get there before word spreads and the crowds start surging in. read more
