Overall I must say the first day was the last time I'd attend a normal gym primarily. I take the adult Muay Thai classes and I'll say right now, all those years of hurt, sadness, and anger were all gone with the first punch, and it makes you want to come back again and again! I sought out the Ct Academy after learning about their Filipino Martial Arts Academy association and was told that CAMA was the place to go on the east coast. I think the two instructors are outstanding and really well-priced for the amount of instruction I've received so far. The program is well-rounded, worthwhile, and seems to be tailorable to all skill levels and body types. I'm a stick girl at heart and gear my training towards that, but these guys are multi-cultural and are inspiring me to consider integrating some other stuff. They're doing kickboxing, grappling, yoga, submission fighting, traditional martial arts (with and without weapons) - so we'll see what I try next :)

WRONG! I tried for years to go to the low cost gyms but I never saw the results I wanted. At Sitsuphan you get results! Sitsuphan got me in the best shape of my life which I owe to their top notch coaching staff. The coaches/trainers at really help you get in shape and keep you motivated. The trainers were nice enough, but it was disappointing that during the workout they seemed very distracted. It was difficult to focus on the warm up exercises they assigned while they were gossiping about students with each other. I believe the trainers are knowledgeable and I would get a good education, but the lack of focus and lax attitude just really made me unmotivated to go back. If you are not excited about Muay Thai then how can you make me excited? I also didn't like that they are somewhat secretive with their pricing scheme. I asked several times about price and was never given a straight answer. Makes it seem less legitimate. UPDATE: The owner reached out to me and I got the impression my experience was the exception and not the rule. Having said that I have already moved on to a new exercise venue and won't be giving sitsuphan another chance, but I am going to upgrade my rating to reflect my interaction with the owner.

Lots of free weights, grunge type..you know, where you actually sweat. Well, this is one of those places with a twist. There are two separate buildings; side-by-each as we say in RI. One houses the strength conditioning equipment (weights, treadmills) and the other is the cardio side which houses the boxing ring, heavy bags and everything else you would typically find in a MMA environment. What's nice is it's not your typical (Yo, Adrienne!) type gym or mentality. I would estimate it is evenly split 50/50-male/female...as more people become aware of the benefits of this type of cardio/core training. There is instruction (group and private) at all levels including: children's sessions in Boxing and Jujitsu; adult Muay Thai; BJJ, Boxing (non-contact) and sparring (only if you wish). While there are other places that offer some type of self-defense training, this is the ONLY boxing venue in the area. Overall, the best price structure as well. So if you're a beginner-advanced, just want to lose weight....OR MAYBE...you want to learn a good take down move the next time the guy in front of you is about to clear out the crab legs at the buffet...then this is the place.

Sensei Rui has been training my daughter for three years now. He is old-school martial arts, the…read morereal thing. He cares about his students. Yes it is a business, but a business that is built on integrity, loyalty and professionalism. He doesn't hand out lollipops to the kids and adults in this dojo. He doesn't want to just take your money and turn out a student that thinks they know what to do but really doesn't. He wants the outcome to be faultless. He trains his students to be respectful of the practice. My daughter loves him and doesn't want to miss any classes - she goes to training 4x a week and loves it. It's a second family to her. Her confidence has immensely improved, and she is jacked now from all the hard work. She has placed first multiple times in her age category at martial arts tournaments under his tutelage. He has infinite patience when needed, but tough love when called for. This school and Mr. Rodrigues is no joke; he is very capable and competent. You will be hard pressed to find another instructor that is as competent and caring as Sensei Rui.

I've spent the last 7 years training martial arts in some form. I started with Jiu Jitsu…read more(Japanese-style) and then moved onto muay thai, from one of the premiere MMA/Muay thai gyms in Boston, where I trained for 6 years or so until I recently moved and it's just too far away. I've also used groupons for a few other studios in Boston and on the North Shore - focusing mostly on muay thai and boxing. So I've seen a number of different approaches and formats over the years. North Shore Muay Thai Academy is great because the focus is almost entirely on Muay Thai (they just added some MMA classes). There are different types of muay thai classes every day - no competition with other martial arts like BJJ. I really like that as I have limited time and have always chosen to focus on muay thai (I just love to box) - so it's been harder at other places b/c I was much more limited in classes I could attend. With NSMTA, there are options every day, which is really nice. As far as the classes go, they are divided into technique classes, bag work (cardio and technique), and sparring with pad work. I really like the variety. I'm used to basically either a teaching class or conditioning class. So if I don't feel like sparring on that day, I just go earlier and do a good conditioning bag workout. As far as the atmosphere goes, it's cool. I've been going now for a few months (usually 2-3 times a week) and really like the ppl. It's a good group of guys, everyone is nice, no one is a jerk - which is really nice. Ppl are very respectful and looking to learn and have fun - no one is trying to break noses or anything. I've been places where I didn't really like the other ppl and it's just so much more fun when you like the guys you're working with. Kru Mark is a good teacher (explains the idea behind specific techniques as well as the general idea of the movements) and really nice guy. He's there day after day and brings good energy and an enthusiasm for the sport, which is great. And with his teaching, there's always a theme as we march through techniques, which I like a lot. I like structure to learning (as opposed to each day is a random lesson to learn), and it feels like there some of that here. Also, he teaches nearly all the classes, so it's nice to have that level of instruction all the time. If you're interested in learning muay thai, this is a great place to go.
