There are multiple highly skilled black belts who are actively involved in teaching, and the level of technical detail and attention given to students is impressive. As a woman, feeling comfortable and respected in a martial arts environment is very important to me, and this gym absolutely delivers. The atmosphere is welcoming, supportive, and focused on learning real, practical self-defense skills. The instructors take the time to ensure students understand techniques properly, and safety and discipline are clearly a priority. The culture here is very positive -- everyone is friendly, helpful, and genuinely interested in improving together. Whether you are a beginner or experienced practitioner, you feel encouraged and challenged in the best way. They also have a fantastic kids program that emphasizes confidence, respect, and strong fundamentals in a structured environment. If you are looking for high-quality Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction with experienced black belts, a respectful atmosphere, and a strong sense of community, I highly recommend training here. I am very glad I chose this academy and look forward to continuing my training here long-term.

I had never taken a formal boxing class before and it was very easy to walk in and feel relaxed in the class format. The instructors are great at keeping the class moving, and helping you out if you need it. Yes, there are people in the class that clearly are 'experienced' boxers, but I have yet to feel any intimidation or hesitation returning to the class. The format of stations and high interval training keeps the class moving and you basically pair up with someone on the same level as you. You don't even have a lot of time to even compare or think about what other groups are doing. Within minutes of the class your heart rate is up, and sweat is coming down. I've only been to about 4 classes now, and have become obsessed with this type of workout. The constant mix up of exercises keeps you on your toes, literally. I love the bag work and partner pad work; but you also get quite the ab workout and other areas of your body covered. The instructors keep you right on time, so you don't have to fear class going over or anything; and if you don't have your own gloves they do provide high quality gear. Everything is very clean and everyone I've had classes with are all extremely nice and welcoming. I'm an avid workout person, and have done things from running to crossfit to rowing, and this might be by far my favorite type of workout yet! I highly recommend this place! [also extremely affordable for the workout you're getting!] Only thing I wish they could change is offering more than the 6pm-7pm group class because working outside of Newport sometimes makes it hard to get there!

We came by chance as a last minute invite to Coach Tessa's Little Ledgends Saturday class. Not a…read moreclue what we were in for. We visited twice on bring-a-friend days. Our kid is shy, anxious and immediately they took her under their wing. Coach Tessa is a power house. She's based out of Massachusetts and trecks her way to the gym multiple times a week. She's versatile and adaptive. She works with the littlest of kiddos to the advanced long-termers. She's knowledgeable about her routines, programs, and educates as much as she demonstrates. I highly recommend her. The gym itself is slowly coming along. At first we were skeptic, the ring was well worn, and the door litterally flew of the hinges in the wind while we were there. Then, in pur two months here, it's been repainted, a new ring, and nee showers being installed as we speak. I think it's safe to say that the owner is invested. I do not judge a person based on thier reputation without knowing them. To be fair the only thing I knew about Jared before joining was that he hosts an amazing Thanksgiving Turkey/ Food drive benefitting many North Providence residents. As in any gym, language is to be desired. On any given day vulgarity is present, but then again, chit happens. I have sincerely and seriously noticed that the crew has been making a sustainable effort to be aware of thier language when the kids are present, and it's appreciated. If you're looking for a ballet class experience, you're in the wrong place. Your child will not learn a plie, but she'll learn dedication, consistency, build strength and learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Another aspect that many will hate on is the Prince himself: He's the shortest dude in the place and yet the only Bully. He's built like a brick house. He can't keep his mouth shut. His smile is consitantly crooked as is his tail end. When he sees a fresh face he is constantly drooling over them. Don't expect to leave with out a cold nose to the groin and a sloppy kiss. He goes by "El Chapo" and he is the most beautiful, sweetest "good boy" you've ever met. He basically owns the joint. Pricing of services and use of space is confusing to me. The cost of the kids programs is completely independent from the gym itself: so I can't really speak of the offerings. You should leave with this, don't judge if you haven't given it a chance. It's a great place to visit and you will definitely be welcomed.

But the women who works during the week is the most rude & unwelcoming worker I have ever encountered. She is not friendly & if you are not from the area she watches you like you're going to burn the place down. My family has been spending our summers in Rhode Island since my mom was a little girl, I have always had great memories & amazing things to say about every place I ever went. But the hospitality to people who don't go to this gym everyday is not there. My home gym welcomes everyone with open arms & we have triple times the influx of summer visitors OF ALL AGES...also with no restricted areas. Last year was the first time we tried this gym & we had the same problem, rules & regulations that she makes sure we follow but not too concerned with others. If you are an outsider you will always feel like you're being watched. Now going in to the "off limit" area. I completely understand having equipment that only members could use in their "CrossFit" room but when the classes go on you can't use the area (understandable), so that takes one room away. Now they have a "stretching" room that you would think they would allow you to use as CrossFit when a class is in session but no...that room's equipment is also all off limits. My problem with all of the off limit areas (beside the fact that I've never been to a gym that did this) is there aren't many open areas to be in where you can do a hiit workout or just abs. You have to try to find a corner where you're not in anyone's way. They are definitely catering to the older crowd which is fine but if you are young going to this gym you will feel as though you're being targeted & not treated the same. Also if you're going to have a ton of off limit areas for "non platinum" members then at least have one corner for hiit work outs where people can go with "on limit" equipment. Now going off of always being watched & worried that no matter what I do I will be told I can't do that or I'm not allowed to. The stretching room equipment is off limits but if we would have brought the stuff from the other area I feel as if we would have been told we can't do that either. You can't move the benches so that takes out an area & if you can't move the benches how are we sure we can bring the boxes to a different area. Finally, no bags are allowed on the floor so if you are apart of the younger gym culture and have your own equipment (like most people at almost every gym I've been to) like straps & a belt or a barbell pad...you have to go in to the locker room every time you need one of those things! And I'm sure if I was playing music loudly off of my phone speakers like one man was, I would be told I can't do that. I never felt welcome or comfortable, I always felt like I was being watched & going to be told I can't do something. Even while my husband recorded some of my workouts, she walked past staring. I have gone to gyms all over the country & never had an experience like this. I have worked out with award winning bodybuilders in Hawaii with a friendlier crew than here. Most of the people that work out there are friendly but of course they are because they aren't getting the same treatment. I am never one to sit & nit pick things that I don't like about a place but from the first week I spent in this gym, I was not happy with the treatment. I have never reviewed a place, especially not a bad one but this place definitely deserves it since there was no change from last year. I can't imagine how this women would do in a busier gym setting on top of not seeming like she know much about the gym either. Again, I'm not one to ever judge but since receiving the same treatment from her a year later she's obviously judging me & my husband &all other outsiders. I don't know if it's based off of our appearance or age but she never smiles when I say hello or goodbye & that's just horrible customer service. We tried to give this gym another chance but after this time we will not be back. We already found a new gym & the people are super friendly...we sat & talked with them for a good 10 mins, knowledgeable & overall exactly what we look for. I was thrilled leaving this new gym that we found one that fits our lifestyle & our friendliness. It really is a shame because this gym is very nice and well kept. It has so much potential to be great and have a younger crowd but I guess that's exactly what they don't want. I wish they would just say that in their description instead of making you feel unwelcome. And again the women who works at the from doesn't treat outsiders friendly & definitely wouldn't have a conversation with you. I hope the front desk work changes her attitude because it's a shame that a young couple who loves to work out can't feel safe or comfortable doing what they love based off of our look or age.

Lots of free weights, grunge type..you know, where you actually sweat. Well, this is one of those places with a twist. There are two separate buildings; side-by-each as we say in RI. One houses the strength conditioning equipment (weights, treadmills) and the other is the cardio side which houses the boxing ring, heavy bags and everything else you would typically find in a MMA environment. What's nice is it's not your typical (Yo, Adrienne!) type gym or mentality. I would estimate it is evenly split 50/50-male/female...as more people become aware of the benefits of this type of cardio/core training. There is instruction (group and private) at all levels including: children's sessions in Boxing and Jujitsu; adult Muay Thai; BJJ, Boxing (non-contact) and sparring (only if you wish). While there are other places that offer some type of self-defense training, this is the ONLY boxing venue in the area. Overall, the best price structure as well. So if you're a beginner-advanced, just want to lose weight....OR MAYBE...you want to learn a good take down move the next time the guy in front of you is about to clear out the crab legs at the buffet...then this is the place.
