Any military-connected person or veteran or DoD civilian can stay here. Look at the website for details. The rate depends on your rank I think. For me it was $175/night. Not exactly cheap but a bit cheaper than other options on the Kona side of the island. The cottages are spartan affairs. Mine had a sitting/living room with a small tv. The water pressure is fantastic. It's reasonably clean for a place that probably hasn't been updated since Eisenhower stayed here. The beds certainly haven't been updated. My back is killing me! Aside from the bed, I really can't complain too much. I knew what I was getting. Lots of older people seem to like staying here. There is no climate control options in the cottage but there is a fireplace. The lady at the front desk said I could buy firewood from somewhere and, it being September, I was like why would you need firewood. Because it gets pretty cold (for Hawaii in Sept) at night. The only thing I didn't really like is because it's so close to Kilauea (like, literally across the street), and it's not a secure area, lots of tourists are just wandering around. Parking in stalls they shouldn't. Doing tourist stuff. On the flip side, the location is fantastic if you want to do national park, stargazing, and volcano stuff. If you're more about city life, this isn't the place to stay. On that note, I went down to Hilo town for dinner one night and got back really late. The gate to the national park is open--sort of an honor system for payment for visitors--so you don't have to worry about not having to my access to your cabin if it's late, I thought the front desk people were super awesome. They even let me check in a little bit early since my room was ready. Would totally come back but I would need to bring something like hiking sleeping mats for the beds. They're really bad. As guest for the last ten years we have been impressed by the level of care and concern for the service members who visit KMC. Our cottage (14) was meticulously maintained with everything we need for a good nights rest. The fan in the bedroom is a plus on really warm summer nights as well as the heat elements and beautiful fireplace for Winter. Thankful for the leadership who when we were ill treated by an employee who overstepped his authority during a past visit was relieved of his duties. There were other complaints about the individual prior; the reality is that all visitor experiences should be positive. Mahalo for everything. First things first, please keep in mind this is a CAMP, not a resort...and the cabins were built in 1922! So please lower your expectations and you should be fine lol. Nonetheless, our one bedroom cottage did have a jetted tub, overhead rain bath shower head, and nice little flat screen TV. Just so happened Kilauea was erupting on our visit so it couldn't have been better! KMC is open to authorized patrons and run by MWR. Typical MWR facilities on site to include bowling alley & grill (10 Pin Grill), galley (Crater Rim Cafe), general store, post office, recreation center w/equipment rentals, laundry, coffee stand, and small theatre. If you are here for the Volcano I don't think you could find a better deal for accommodations. Keep in mind it is COLD up here and we definitely put the heaters to use. Our fireplace was broken which was a bummer. Cons: - very thin walls. Even tho our unit was stand alone we could hear everything and everyone talking outside. - everything in the cottage was VERY dated. The couch was super old and pull out mattress so bad it was unusable. Luckily the bed/mattress itself was comfortable. I understand recreational funding is probably not even on the radar for the military but this place most definitely needs some help or a nice little renovation/new furniture. This place is such a hidden gem! We've been in and around the military for over 20 years and I only recently discovered this place! Such a crazy history behind the Camp. The cabins were perfect. This is really the only form of "camping" I will do. The cabins had wood fire places, refrigerators, microwaves and full bathrooms. What more could you need? The convenience of the general store and coffee shop was great too. We didn't go to the restaurant even though they offered free breakfast. They also have laundry facilities on the property which is fantastic. We loved staying here and would absolutely do it again! read more

Wonderful place for people with military, dod access, etc. We loved our stay, but be aware it is very basic accomodations, former military camp style. Think motel 6 cabins in a charming location near the volcano national park. Location, location, location! A 2 bedroom cabin could fit 6 for about 200 dollars per night. Mini kitchen consisted of a microwave coffee maker, and mini fridge. It's a beautiful location. There's a bowling alley, Laundromat, small store, restaurant, and more. Again, all very basic but has everything you need. The shower in our cabin was good and they had excellent shampoo, shower gel, lotion, and conditioner. The beds are pretty firm but we like firm so that worked for us. The staff at the buffet breakfast were friendly, especially the female cashier and the young male buffet server. We spent two nights up there so we could see the volcano eruption. The first night we were in cabin 9 m. We loved the set up and the nice big bathroom. The beds were terrible. We were all wrecked the next day! So we asked and were moved to cabin 29. Cabin 29 is smaller but adorable! And the beds were definitely better!! We didn't eat much there but the morning breakfast buffet seemed okay. I enjoyed the strong, fresh coffee. The people helping around the complex were nice and helpful and we really appreciated the willingness to move us. I would absolutely come back. read more

House keeping was amazing- we had to request for the floors to be cleaned when we first checked in, but after that they were so kind to our every call (which was often- I apologize!). We rented a 3 bedroom, 2 bath cottage with a jetted tub in the master. Beds were clean although the master bed was so springy it hurt a tad to sleep on. I had no expectations going into this place and I was pleasantly surprised. Price: a 3 bedroom jacuzzi tub with kitchen was $220/night no tax with Veteran rate. For that location you can't beat the price. Accommodations: walking into the place was updated for a camp. The bathrooms nice and new. The kitchen and furniture a bit dated but good. The kitchen had lots of utensils, pots pans, dish ware, oven, stove, coffeee maker, microwave, and toaster. The only problem would be the master bed. It was uncomfortable but oh so creaky. We had our 1 year old sleeping in the room with us and it was so loud getting in and out of bed my husband and I tried not to move at all. There were tvs in the master bed room and living area. Cable was basic and the Wi-Fi was pretty good! Amenities: two places to eat, a general store with lots of options at pretty fair prices, a bowling alley and theater (this wasn't open while we were there), a bar, post office, gas station, and laundry. I really liked the general store as it had a lot of things and some touristy items in case you needed to bring something back. Access on the park allows you to purchase a 7 day pass for like $30. Just note that it is restricted to one person and once car. We had a rental and that was an option. But make sure the person who leaves the park is listed on the pass or has the id of the person listed. Not sure they will let you in if it doesn't match. Didn't see many people walking around but in the common areas people were always there. It was such a lovely cold and nicely kept place that I can't wait to go back. My family have never experienced the amazing views & adventurous hikes at this park so we were really excited to stay here! This was a pretty cool camp for my family of 11 to visit on our island hopping trip. Originally we had three rooms but asked about a building that had multiple rooms and they were able to support for the night at a slightly higher price than planned. Everyone said this was the best thing we could've done. It was raining outside, so a miserable, cold evening. Fortunately, I had gotten smores and a bundle of firewood at the PX before dinner, and before they sold out of wood. The bundle provided a few hours of enjoyment using our fireplace, chatting, eating smores, and watching movies. A truly memorable experience. Our building had a full kitchen with dishes that was a blessing to have. The weather was somewhat chilly with the rain and mountain elevation. The rooms have some sort of heating system that I didn't explore in depth but adjusted a thermostat which seemed to warm the room. The water was also very hot which felt good taking a shower. It's not a modern camp by any means but it had all the amenities, was clean, and comfortable. The staff are very nice and had some sort of holiday cabin decorating contest going on to add for Christmas. We ended up driving around since it was raining. They offer a gas station onsite, open 24/7 which you can't beat. They have a PX that amazed me with the selection of products from alcohol, drinks, smores, food, wood, gifts, etc. Whoever manages the store and provides for the selection of products is doing an awesome job considering it sites on the edge of a volcano. It does offer food at the small bowling alley and another nearby building that are open on select days/times. We ate breakfast at the bowling alley in phases to not overwhelm the staff, but could see the cashier was not happy to see us given a little attitude. The breakfast was ok but nothing to write home about. It fed the family and got us on with our day. We would definitely recommend this camp and stay here again. A very quiet area situated on the rim of the volcano with all the amenities. The kids will love it. read more

Overall KMC (Kilauea military camp) is a great place to stay for several days with the family while you hike the national park in the daytime and see the volcano at night. It's quiet, it's got spacious, although DATED cottages. Breakfast is yummy DFAC style breakfast for all your active duty and retired folks should bring back good ish memories. I booked six of our eight day vacation here. Leaving our first and last days open for elsewhere. This proved to be a bit of a mistake. The camp has an amazing location, within the volcano park itself. While that is extremely convenient for making it to the trails first thing in the morning. It is very inconvenient for everything else, like coffee, breakfast lunch or dinner. Ended up cutting the stay here down to just three days which was plenty of time to see much of the park. The room itself was very clean, quite, and spacious. The camp seems to only be used as an MWR facility at this time. The amenities include a 24hr self service gas station with 2 pumps. A bowling alley, self service laundry, coffee shop and a shopette / px. This place is located at 4k ft elevation and we experienced almost every night to be I. The mid 40s-50s. I was thankful to have brought a light jacket and a pair of pants. Overall, I really did enjoy staying here. 2-3 days is plenty of time to see the areas around here if you ask me. I would recommend staying here if you are eligible (Military or retired Military). I deducted one star because it is far from everything. And the things that are here, open late 8 or 9 am and close early. Which made it difficult to use any of the amenities. Also: if you change you itinerary they will charge you an extra nights stay. read more

EXTREMELY DATED, even for big island. for a place with No air conditioning there's not a single fan in the room. Laundry is available but you better remember to bring coins, they don't have any. 30 miles from anything else. They have Wi-Fi but the code expires every 24 hours and you have to go to the front office to get tue new one. read more

KMC you were amazing. I will never forget my wonderful stay here with my family. We were taken care of so well. 10/10 service, beautiful views, all around so calming. Our cabin was beautiful we stayed in a 2 bedroom full kitchen with a jetted tub cabin. My only 1 issue that sprung upon us with our stay was the jetted tub. When we ran the water it didn't look too clean. When we turned the jets on, dirt and leaves flew out of the jets into our tub water. Due to that happening, I ended up getting a severe UTI and was hospitalized due to me urinating blood. Hospital told me it was most likely from the water and bacteria in the tub. Even though that happened to me, and let me tell you it wasn't fun, i still had an amazing stay and wasn't upset with KMC. Everything with our stay overall was beautiful and perfect and outshined that tub incident. I will definitely stay here again and I can't wait to come back. read more

A group of 6.3 of us went to KMC for a friends trip. I was a little worried it would be a little dingy and run down, but I was pleasantly surprised. The cabin was pretty decent. The main room had a queen bed and it's own bathroom with jetted tub. The couple with the toddler got that room. it was really helpful for them to have their own bath. The other two rooms are small, but there's really no reason to do anything but sleep in them. The beds are not amazing. They're old and noisy. I could feel individual springs every time I rolled over. That's not to say they were super uncomfortable, but could definitely be upgraded. The main bathroom was super basic: sink, toilet, shower. No bells or whistles needed. The water was nice and hot. The kitchen was adequately stocked for making meals. We had picked up a load of stuff from Costco. I made pancakes each morning and salmon and salad for dinners. The stove and oven worked great! The dining table was in pretty good shape, though the four chairs were mismatched. They provided a high chair for baby girl and we pulled an ottoman up for the fifth and sixth adults. The heater definitely works, though most of us didn't want or need it. Things worth doing: Volcanoes National Park: walk the Kiluea Iki Trail, wander the steam vents, check out the lava tube (if it ever reopens) Stargazing!! Go to the arcade play pool Go bowling (the bowling alley is surprisingly nice and surprisingly cheap) Get a cocktail at the lounge Walk the mile and a half to Volcano Winery for a tasting The general store has a lot of the packaged goods you might want as well as beer, wine, and liquor. It's fine with me that the facility is old and not upgraded, there's no place to put soap or toiletries in the shower, and no lamp or plug on one side of the bed (room 77B). The fireplace worked well and there were no bugs. However, the whole place needed a serious deep clean. I didn't feel clean the whole time I was there. The bed isn't uncomfortable, but is very springy which might wake up the person next to you if you move a lot. Also, we were told on check in that breakfast was served at the rec center 10 Pins cafe, but when we got there well within the breakfast time period, it was closed. read more

Not sure why this place got such low scores in previous reviews...this place literally has "camp" in its name... If you're looking for a Sheraton hotel experience, this is not the place for you. If you're looking for a convenient, outdoorsy, affordable place - stay here! Location (5/5): Absolutely cannot beat this location. You're literally on the volcano, up the road from the Volcano National Park, in a place with basically zero light pollution. If you stay here, PLEASE do some star-gazing. You can see the Milky Way, and we saw plenty of shooting stars. It does get chilly at night (40s-50s in Summer), so bring a good jacket. Food (3/5): Their food options are pretty good. Their buffet is a popular and great option for those that would rather pick how much of what they eat. Extremely satisfied with their breakfast buffet options. For dinner one night I ordered their kalbi ribs...they were very chewy and I ended up only eating about half of it. Camp Layout (4/5): It's not a huge camp, but signs are lacking and it's easy to get turned around. Use the park map they give you upon check-in - I kept it on me and we pulled it out often for reference. Accommodation (3/5): Again, it's a camp. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment, which was definitely outdated, but everything worked and the bathroom was nice. They give you towels and soap, but no shower products (shampoo, conditioner, etc) - or maybe they just forgot to restock our room. Couch was fine, TV worked, we had a bar fridge, microwave and coffee maker which I really appreciated. Let's be honest, you're more than likely going to be out and about, so it's fine for that. The fireplace was a nice option for nighttime if you want to be cozy. The only real sad part about this cabin is the bed - That mattress was pretty bad. I don't have back problems, but my back was not happy in the morning getting out of bed. Other things to note (but not deal breakers for us): the A/C didn't seem to work - that was rectified by opening the windows for the cold mountain air. Also, the walls were on the thin side, but not so much that you could hear everything your neighbor was doing. We shared one wall, which was thankfully not on our bedroom side. Amenities (5/5): they have a shop on location which has everything from souvenirs & knick-knacks to food/drink options and sunscreen. They're pretty well stocked so be sure to get bottles of water and your basics for day-tripping here. Pro tip: Their bags of coffee are reasonably priced, so buy them here if you're planning on getting any. Their "cafe" is located inside the game room. This was our third time staying here (second during Covid) and we won't be back. This place needs some serious upgrades. The couch in our cabin is broke, desk chair has no back, all the sinks back up immediately when water is turned on. Heat barely works in current cabin. Coffee stand is closed (COVID's been here two years-shouldn't be an excuse any longer) half the games in the game building out of order, laundry is $4 a load and detergent was $4 for tiny bottle of tide. Food is seriously limited...again, it's been two years so no longer should Covid be an excuse. The restaurant keeps running out of simple things so limited even more. We used to love coming here, now it's just rundown and not worth staying in the middle of nowhere any longer. read more

This is my second time staying here and it's even better than the last! I first stayed here in the late 80's as a child and loved it. It's amazing to see the wonderful upgrades today as well as the preservation of the charm and history that makes KMC such a lovely place to stay. My husband and I had cottage 74 behind the Eisenhower House. We stayed for an early Christmas and anniversary vacation. I adore the cabins! Love the updates like the jacuzzi tub and Tiffany lamps and the fireplaces are so cozy! The General Store has gotten even bigger than before and was stocked with almost anything we needed. The dining facility was basic, and the menu adequate. I wish they either beefed up their menu or lowered their prices to reflect the "chow hall" offerings. Some days were good others not so much. The staff are all wonderful, delightful and sweet. The young guy in the General store was especially nice and personable and very helpful with questions we had. The lobby and front cabins were all lit up for Christmas which made our stay especially memorable! Please keep this up!! We're already looking forward to our next return trip! read more

*UPDATE - NOW ONE STAR* Got pink eye from the gross bed. That is just disgusting. A previous reviewer mentioned lead in the water in 2020. They did not read the entire report and their information is incorrect, because in 2021 there was no lead found across 10 samples. The camp is definitely dated. Spiders have taken over the outsides of the buildings and the lights in almost every room flickers before they turn on. So if you are afraid of spiders or are prone to flash-induced seizures, please proceed with caution. The mattresses are spring that dig into your shoulders and hips. Our comforter was stained. And the base of the toilet was covered in pee. There is no air conditioning. The cabinets in the kitchen are disgusting so you definitely need to clean everything before you cook with it. Pretty sure this place has a problem with black mold. We noticed some black stuff on the ceiling in one of the rooms and in the shower. I'm glad I had the opportunity to stay at Kilauea Military Camp because I had a relaxing and amazing experience. Originally my bf and I were trying to find a couchsurfing host and failed at finding someone that was available. Luckily, my bf booked a cottage at KMC a few days before our arrival for about $92/night. I did not get a chance to look up the place prior to our arrival but I was very impressed. KMC is located inside Volcanoes National Park, which is very convenient for those who plan to explore the park longer than a day. The camp had amenities such as a dining hall, gym, bar, general store, game rooms, and bowling which is perfect since the camp is not near any night life. Unfortunately we didn't take these amenities to our advantage since we spent most of our days exploring the park. Our cottage was comfortable and roomier than I pictured it to be. There's a TV in the living room and bedroom, refrigerator (came helpful for us to store groceries and leftovers rather than eating at the dining hall), and coffee maker. Sure, it's not an exotic resort but with the convenience of its location and amenities, this place made our visit pleasurable. I have been coming here for almost a decade and it never gets old! The most recent time was last weekend - yes, during COVID. They are still honoring and accepting reservations while ensuring social distancing and taking precautionary measures. The store and recreational lodge are still open but the dining area/restaurant/cafe are not. The road up to Kilauea is closed as is the Volcano House and lava tube. I am always extremely pleased with the customer service we receive at KMC. However, this most recent time, there was a cashier at the store that was less than friendly. The cabins are still in good condition, the heaters still work. The kitchenettes come stocked with almost everything you need from plates and utensils to cookware and cutlery. Cable and internet (free Wi-Fi) still come in the cabins. I wish I could spend weeks there! I know this review is a particularly short one but I'll write a longer one the next time I am able to truly explore the camp like before. read more

This time, we asked for a three bedroom apartment for five ppl and got a three bedroom condo/cabin (kitchen and master bedroom included-3bdroom 2 bath), upgraded for free from the apartment we had already paid for. Cost per night here ranges drastically depending on your rank in the military. We paid ~$180 per night as reference with our host being retired DoD, but I know the fare can be as low as $50 for the same unit my family stayed in. Amenities include a general store, a recreation area, tennis courts with free rentals, biking with free rentals, a cafeteria, a chapel, a bowling alley, and cheap gas for your rental car! Worth it to stay here if you can. You'll be so close to all the volcano activities it'll be so easy to take a rest midday and then continue on to cover everything at the park. Plus without light pollution the stars will be the most amazing you have ever seen. Shooting star every night here!! read more

Conducted a training session here for work. Located about 45 minutes away from the Hilo airport in the National Park. My understanding is that you need to be military or have a military sponsorship to stay on this property. You may want to call to verify. Literally flew in and got there about 6 pm and flew out the next afternoon. Didn't really get to enjoy the amenities like the bowling alley and the close proximity to hiking the trails to see evidence of an active volcano, but I did get an essence of the area. Note: Since you are pretty far away from town, once you get into the park there is not much other offerings for food options. Watch the times as the cafe in this property has certain hours. Food is very camp style so don't expect gourmet after all it is a campsite. Fair is fair if you have the opportunity to stay here, you should. As a local girl, I have to ask all guests to always respect the cultural and historical preservation of places that you visit. This place is significant historically to Hawaiians, Japanese Americans, and our military. Kilauea is also a sacred place to Native Hawaiians. While this may be difficult to understand in a western world where property is often designated by walls and fences, imagine that anywhere you travel in Kilauea is a temple without walls. Much like we would typically know not to litter, vandalize, or steal from a church, I'd ask you to do the same in our local sacred spots as well. With that having been said, if you have the ability to stay here, then I would recommend it over any hotel, most Air B&Bs, and any Bed and Breakfast on the island of Hawai'i. At a decent price, you get a spacious room with a common area, bedroom, bathroom (some rooms even have jacuzzis), and a mini fridge. You're also in walking distance from a convenience store, cafes, restaurants, a bowling alley, a theater, scenic points, hiking trails, and a whole lotta hisotry. read more

This review is for the snack bar at the bowling alley. At 1330, it was the only place that was serving any kind of food on this Wednesday. They had a propane leak, so the grill was shut down and all they had were deli sandwiches and what they thought they could do in a toaster oven. We ordered 2 toasted cheese sandwiches. When they came out they were pathetic. My wife found something green inside the burnt bread, and there wasn't enough cheese in the sandwich to bait a mouse trap. They had to be the worst cheese sandwiches that we have ever had and neither of us good eat it. To think I tipped them is beyond me. read more

Everything here was wonderful EXCEPT customer service. You would think the workers would understand that they are servicing service members and treat them AND their families with some ounce of respect. We didn't get that. The only place where we felt comfortable and treated like humans was the bowling alley... the workers there were amazing. Before going to the bowling alley we decided to pop into the bar they have on property...The bartender slammed the door on us when we asked if he was still open (it was 8pm) The best was the lady working at the front desk. She rolled her eyes when we asked for the number to the front desk and slammed a pamphlet down on the counter with the number on it.... (This information proved to be useless since no one answers phones there anyway). Prior to checking in We had been trying to extend our stay for a week and a half and called every single day with no answer! When we asked about extending during check in she said "oh no, we no more nothing, we busy". So we let her know we were trying to call for over a week and all she said was "we short staffed"... it seems to be a plague nowadays to provide customer service. I am still leaving three stars because the property and the cabin was very nice and not to mention the workers at the bowling alley!! Ps. A lot of the games in the arcade are broken. read more

Aloha, when in Volcano & thirsty, KMC bar is the place to be. Great prices for beers. Food in the restaurant is priced well too. And hanging in the bowling alley / recreation room, way fun with great burger & fries at great prices too. Best part of the bar is the company. The bartenders are fun & the "local" crowd is the best. Love hanging out with the locals. Some evenings they'll have a hula show, nice. Mahalo! We'll be back. read more

There bowling alley is grand it has nice pool tables that are very well kept polls are in great shape and the food is grand is all buildings only thing I would change is that they might wanna change how they make the garlic fries I'm a mega fan for chili fries and garlic fries but there garlic fries do need some work but the service is incredible and very very kind and respectful and helpful I definitely recommend this place to all people that visit the volcano area it's a place to make incredible memories you will never forget I am definitely a repeat customer after my last visit read more

Very convenient military camp near the volcano. My husband was able to make our reservation on their website a few weeks prior to us flying out. It is about a 30 min drive from the Hilo airport. Once arriving at the Volcano National Park, we gave the park ranger the active duty military ID and we received an annual pass for free. It is nice because it is for all national parks! When we got to the camp area we went to the main building. It has a very pretty stained glass window of a volcano. The receptionist was very nice and gave us a map and circled the important areas. We were able to park right in front of our cabin which was nice at night and early morning when it was very cold! The cabin had a nice living room area with a fireplace! There were 2 double beds in the back and a nice bathroom. It is very decently priced for what you get and the convenience of it being near the jagger museum. read more
