One of the best fudge/ice cream shops in Mackinaw City and that's saying something since there is no shortage in these parts. Diverse selection of Kilwin's ice cream flavors. There's pretty much something for everyone. I had the Turtle Waffle Cone. It was so good, probably the best ice cream I think I've ever had in Mackinaw City and again, that's saying something because I have sampled a lot of ice cream at a lot of shops in this town by now. I consider myself a connoisseur of all things ice cream, so I know what I'm talking about here. Back to the Turtle Waffle Cone. It was so rich, smooth and creamy. I think that I could eat that everyday and not get sick of it- it's that good. It's what quality ice cream should be. I also tried the Salted Caramel and it was unreal, with quality caramel syrup over velvety ice cream interspersed with chunks of caramel and sea salt. It was worth the calories and fat it contained, I'm sure. My husband got the Mackinac Island Fudge twice (yes, the ice cream is so good, we went back twice during this most recent vacation). A lot of ice cream shops offer Mackinac Island Fudge, but this was far and away the best variety of it either one of us has ever tried (I sampled his and grabbed a sample from the counter as well). Oh, and I tried their low fat sorbet, too, which was actually quite nice. I won't be surprised if my husband tries to special order a vat of it from Kilwins someday or makes a day trip up there for more while I'm not looking (just kidding, maybe). I think our ice creams were about $4 each- not cheap, by any means, but worth the price and pretty much on par with other ice cream/fudge shops in the local area. It is a tourist town, after all, so I expect to pay a little more (and did). The fudge is some of the best we've tried in the area. At a certain point, every fudge shop's is good and to an extent, they all start to taste alike after a bit (and after sampling the wares from one shop to another), but it comes down to selection and pricing, as well as individual quality. Kilwins, like everyone else in Mackinaw, makes great fudge. The prices are a bit higher, but competitive with the other shops in town. They're peanut butter chocolate was beyond good, rich and buttery. I also liked their dark chocolate fudge, while my husband went crazy for the maple nut. Was it so much better than every other fudge shop around Mackinaw? I don't really know about that, but it was up there in terms of variety, price and quality. The service was friendly and they were pretty generous with the samples of both fudge and ice cream, as well as the candies, of which they had an enviable selection. Pretty much everything a full-service chocolatier should have around, they did. We enjoyed watching them make fudge in the back, but only here did I manage to observe the process for making waffle cones. I thought the demonstration was pretty entertaining. It's weird, because I always wondered how they were made and now I know. FYI It isn't an especially involved process, but it does call for the use of a waffle maker.

Forget the fudge this is an ice cream town and Kilwins makes some good ice cream. The girl at the counter said cake batter and strawberry chunk were her favorite flavors but she's 18. Our more mature palets thought the coconut, which is really rich vanilla loaded with toasted coconut and chocolate chunks, the maple nut and chocolate were amazing. Kilwins makes their own ice cream so the only way you are going to get it is to go there.

Great selection of good ice creams. Salted Carmel was great. Kilwin's mud was even better. Price was a little high but servings were large.

Pricey, but tasty! They had quite a few unique flavors to choose from and the waffle cone was delicious.

The second staff member that was more into the counter and store offered to help us if we needed anything. The two staffers didn't give us a welcoming feeling at all, perhaps they are both shy? This is the only shop that offers an all caramel fudge block. They don't offer an extensive amount of fudge, but they have a ton of popcorn and taffies. An entire wall of different flavored taffies. The caramel fudge is unique and only available here. I do enjoy caramel flavored candies. Caramels make everything a lot yummier. Their caramel and cheese popcorn kernels are quite sizable and very tasty. Their caramel fudge is different, let it melt in your mouth some. The taffies are quite a variety of flavors. Some are really good, the caramel apple is right on the money. Some have hints of flavors, but aren't as distinguishable. This is the same taffy sold at Joann's, since the packaging is exactly the same. The assortment of dark chocolates are decent. Their cheese and caramel popcorn are both good.

One of the nicer fudge and candy shops in Mackinaw City…read more If one thing is for certain, it's that Mackinaw City is teeming with fudge shops. You look one direction, there's a fudge shop, whip your head around, there's another.. and another and another and so on. You get the point. Between the city and the island, I've lost count of how many there are. In fact, it seems like a few companies have sealed the deal on fudge by owning multiple shops under slightly different names all over town (and the island, plus a few downstate storefront locations) offering similar products, prices and promotions. Way to monopolize! It's a bit confusing, to be honest. Combine that with the fact that several of the traditional gift shops and restaurants have even gotten into the habit of offering fudge, and well, the choices are rather dizzying. With that said, not all fudge shops are created equal. Some have better quality fudge, taffy, truffles, ice cream, etc, while some have better salesmanship and service or a more competitive price. It all depends on what you want. We stopped into Mackinaw Fudge on vacation this summer. They had the single best fudge promotion going at the time- "buy two, get two slices free" of any flavor(s) for $16, which translates to merely $4 per slice. Nowhere else in town did we find a fudge deal as good as that one. So, what about quality? Well, I haven't really ever had anything that could be described as bad fudge from any of the shops around Mackinaw before, so the quality is pretty even among all of the competition (of which there is a lot), with a few variations. Overall, I liked the selection of fudge here, which was massive and the dark chocolate, mint chocolate and maple fudge were all rich and creamy and tasted legitimately sublime. For me, the dark chocolate varieties are where it's at. There's no telling how much of it I could eat, so reigning in my "inner fudgie" is a must. The taffy selection was pretty extensive as well and the deal on that was also great. I like homemade taffy (the good stuff, not the crappy carnival goo), so I thought theirs won out on the taffy taste challenge. It had great flavor and wasn't too stiff or sticky. Of all the taffy I sampled, theirs was one of the best when it came to consistency and flavor. Their saltwater taffy promotion was $6.99 per pound, not at all a bad price. As for service, it was hospitable and the guy that waited on us pointed out the various fudge promotions and operating hours of other fudge shops around town, showing us that he wasn't just trying to make a sale. There was no hard sale involved and he was generous with the samples. I think he doled out between 5-6 samples to us before we decided on what we really wanted. I didn't get to see anyone making fudge here (they do it in the back and not in front of customers), so that was a bummer and this particular shop stopped scooping ice cream awhile ago. I asked why and it was explained to us that they eliminated the ice cream counter to make way for more product. That, too, was a bummer, but I understood why they made the change. I was little disappointed because I remember getting fabulous ice cream here before, but I found a worthy alternative ice cream spot shortly thereafter. The fudge promotion remained the best in town, so we took advantage of it. It was the best deal of the day.

I have a soft spot for fudges so this is a biased review. I guess it's hard to make bad fudges but…read moreit's the perfect amount of sweetness & flavour. There are so many to choose from! It's a cute shop & service is great. Everyone's friendly around here which is an added bonus :)
