For as many times as I've been to Merchant's Square over the years, I had never noticed Kimball Theatre smack dab in the middle of it. The theatre is small and classic with a little concessions area and nice bathrooms. It's a single-level theatre but the seats are angled well enough that no one's going to block your view of the stage. Really, any seat is a good seat. I attended the inaugural Virginia Cat Festival (day 1) here, with Jackson Galaxy as the keynote speaker. I enjoyed my visit all around and the venue was clearly clean and well-kept. I'd attend another event there in the future. read more

Quaint theater in Colonial Williamsburg. The venue is a College of William & Mary property. While Kimball is home to university productions it also offers other events. The lobby and bathrooms are small and would be difficult to traverse with mobility aids. read more

Theater in colonial Williamsburg which today hosted The Pirates of Penzance, a college production. Prices were reasonable and the show was entertaining. The theater itself is older with character, small enough so that there are really no 'bad' seats and visibility and sound is fine no matter where you are seated. Look forward to attending mor venues! (Would be a great place for some community theatre or other similar events!) read more

This is a beautiful little theater in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg. We went to a musical fundraiser for the Rotary Club here on a Saturday evening. There's also a little concession stand area to the left upon entering the theater. There are clean bathrooms. The theater is very clean with great acoustic ceilings. From what I understand, everything is played here from concerts, to plays, to meetings. I can't wait to attend more performances here in this theater! read more

Yesterday, at The Kimball, I saw Opera in Williamsburg perform Mozart's "The Magic Flute." This is a review of the venue, not specifically Mozart's work or the performing troupe. The normally intimate Kimball Theatre seemed claustrophobic with a sell-out audience. The Kimball, built in the 1930s, was feeling her age, as evidenced by the queues at the ladies' rooms during intermission. And little old ladies (we seemed to be a significant chunk of the demography) frequently do not do long lines well. Acoustics were excellent. The seats were comfortable, even after 3 hours of sitting on me bum. The Kimball, with a seating capacity of 410, is small enough so that entering the stage from one of the two aisles seems just as sensible as entering from the wings. There were no show-stoppers, however, and I intend to enjoy more productions at the Kimball in the future. read more

Great, great theatre, so much better than what you might expect in a location that is the touristy ground-zero of colonial Williamsburg. The Kimball offers very important and interesting screenings of documentaries, classic cinema, foreign films, and indie pictures, which appeal to students and faculty at W&M as well as locals in the know or random Yelpers looking for their culture fix. Case in point: the last film I saw there was the amazing and powerful documentary about Darfur, "The Devil Came on Horseback" (2007), one that uses 1000s of digital pics by ex-soldier and UN human rights advocate, Brian Steidle, to show the ground-level operations and effects of genocide and village cleansing. A W&M professor from the Sudan spoke after the screening, which was an added benefit. The Kimball does all sorts of things like this, so I cannot recommend it highly enough to outside visitors who care as much about present-day conflicts as they do the history of the 17th and 18th centuries. read more

What an awesome theater! After a day of walking around CW, my family was tired and needed a place to sit and enjoy some air conditioning. This little theater that shows independent films is what we found. Because there was some award ceremony going on, we did not get to sit in the main theater, but were rather ushered upstairs. My sister tells me that there are a lot of screenings in the room that we were in. It was very nice and comfy, actually, and part of me actually enjoyed it more than a huge theater. It was small and intimate, but still with good sound and picture. What I liked most about this place was the people that were there. The ushers (yes, they have ushers) were volunteers, who got to see the movie for free, in exchange for checking tickets. They were little old ladies who were really sweet. It was just so comfortable. Who knows when my next trip to Wburg will be, but this would be a sure stop. read more

IF you have the chance to see this, DO IT!!! A GRAND MEDLEY OF ENTERTAINMENTS Owen Murdock's company gamely tries to present a Grand Medley--an 18th-century traveling variety show! They have high hopes of amazing feats, strange beasts, and fast-paced hilarity, but things aren't going well for the company. Their misfortunes provide a comedy of errors for the entire family to enjoy. A colonial entertainment so amusing that even Colonel Washington would have laughed! A live show that was just a hoot, our mixed bag of folks from teens, adults to seniors luved it. If you are visiting Colonial Williamsburg this period "drama" is a must see!! Go early and you must sit in the front few rows, then expect to be engaged with witty banter and then become the brunt of a few jokes. Even our often reserved group enjoyed being made a part of the show. Sit back, have fun with the silly banter and enjoy!! read more

I took my first film class here! The upstairs viewing room is host to many film screenings at night for the college of william and mary, as well as film studies courses during the day. As the other reviews have stated, they play primarily independent films, and have plays and performances throughout the year that come through. Its a great location, and they serve refreshments and have a small selection of snacks and food. Students and seniors get in for 6$ and the layout of the main kimball theatre is lovely. I watched Sunshine Cleaning, Who killed the electric car, rocky horror picture show, and oh yeah, a lot of film festivals come through here, such as the french film festival, the foreign film festival, and... i can't remember others, but at one point they were showing all the godfather movies back to back. i wish i would have taken advantage of this cute theatre a little more! read more

What a cool place! This theatre has both movies and live performances. The majority of the performers come from William and Mary college (basically right next door), but they are quite good. A fair number of nationally-known acts perform here as well. The movies are great. We're talking mostly foreign films, art films and the like. You're much more likely to see "Y Tu Mama Tambien" or "Pan's Labyrinth" on the marquis out front than "Mission Impossible III" or "The Family Stone". In my opinion this really is a must when in Williamsburg, particularly if you can only handle so much of the historic stuff. Colonial Williamsburg uses the facilities a bit too, though. It's a cool old building with a nice look/feel and a good bit of off-the-beaten-path entertainment. You can't go wrong. read more

We saw "Grand Medley", a live show purporting to be a troupe of touring players in early US times. I thought it was a hoot! Currently playing every Monday night at 7:30. We came in about 7:10 and a couple of actors were already warming up the audience disparaging the show. Had we known, we would have come earlier. The audience is encouraged to speak up with "Huzza!" and "Encore!", and they loved it. Broad humor; comic fencing, juggling included. Family friendly. We intend to catch a free hour with "Patrick Henry" speaking at the theater tomorrow afternoon. Don't know if he will be pre-revolution "Give me Liberty or give me death!", or later anti-Federalist, or old man looking back. read more

A cute little theater in the middle of Merchant's Square that plays great indie and foreign films and hosts concerts, plays, etc. This is the only real place in Williamsburg to see non-mainstream movies. Tickets are cheaper than those at the theater in New Town and it's less sterile/more homey. read more
