So far I've been to Kimchi restaurant twice and loved it on both occasions. On the most recent occasion I decided to branch out and have the jukeng bibimbap, which consisted of spicy strips of pork, sticky rice, and an assortment of veg. It was all compartmentalised in one bowl, which meant you had to hunt for the rice at the end, but I felt this added a dash of adventure and I liked punching through different layers. I'm always amazed at how polite the staff are at Kimchi; they really are a credit to the restaurant. The beers are a little pricey though, so the free tap water was welcome on arrival. The restaurant can be quite noisy, but it seems to add to the authenticity of Kimchi, and I liked the close quarters nature of it. read more

Sweet bearded Messiah of your choice! This place is brilliant! I was doing a gig last night in the Cobalt Theater and after setting up and looking after the sound check, I was STARVING! I wandered into this place thinking, "It's a pub, I'm gonna get me some pub grub!" I wander in a discover there's a restaurant... A Korean restaurant. I had a meal called "Babimbap" (I hope I spelled that correctly). It was just what the doctor ordered. All kinds of everything thrown into an amazing pot that was roasting hot. I will admit I had a moment where after the waiter told me that the bowl was hot, I put my hand on the bowl and quickly regretted it. Rather than discuss the temperature of the crockery, I'll get back to the matter at hand. For starters, it's quite surreal to have delicious Korean food in a pub. It's not something you come to expect in a Dublin pub. I loved every molecule of the food and every second spent there. It's an awesome place! read more

I really really like this place. Unlike other Asian restaurants in Dublin, this one doesn't try to be pretentious by adding dragons, bamboo, fans and all that other stereotypical stuff. Instead the Hop House just focuses on the food which is delicious. Korean sushi differs from the Japanese variety in that the former uses beef in its rolls. It's really good and the prices won't break the bank either. Another cool thing about this place is the disco beer which comes in an illuminated clear jug. You can drink it with your meal or cross over to the other room where they have a connected pub (also known as Shakespeare's). The pub has a great vibe as well: it's not filled with crazy drunks like most of drinking holes in Dublin. Overall, I'm a fan of this place and recommend it to anyone that wants a cheap meal in an out-of-the-ordinary eatery. read more

Recommended by our hotel concierge - they had what I expected (miso, edamame, steamed rice, etc.) and a lot of what I didn't (bulgogi, bimibap, etc.) Lots of vegetarian options - but it is attached to a rather large sports bar. I ate in the dining room, next to the sushi counter - much quieter, and more "restaurant-feel". We came here for Dine in Dublin and I am glad we picked this place. One thing I miss the most other than tacos and sushi is Korean food. Imagine the excitement when I saw this in the list of restaurant! Himself had the Tofu Seaweed Salad and I had the Seabream Carpaccio and Salad. The Seaweed salad is to die for. It taste so fresh. As himself says he feels like his artery unclogging by eating it. The Seabream was very good, but I wish I gotten the Seaweed salad. For main I had Bulgogi. I love Bulgogi! Meat heaven. It was a bit too sweet for me, but it was still good. I wish I have gotten Bibimbap like himself did. It was delicious! I love the chili sauce that came with it. So spicy and so tasty. The staff offered soy sauce or chili sauce with Bibimbap which is different. Whenever I had Bibimbap it was always with chili sauce. I had the chocolate cake for desert. It was ok. Himself's desert came with fried lotus root and Korean rice sweet cakes. I wish I have gotten that. The tea was fantastic. I love the green tea with rice flavoring in it. So good. And all these (thank to dine in dublin!) for 40 Euros! I totally would go back again! read more

AMAZING FOOD. Cannot overstate. Everything was delicious (Doenjang zigae, Tofu bibim bap, and a vegetarian version of the Pajeon), so much so that when another table was brought there food I almost stood up to see what they got and order more! I felt like I could have eaten all three of the main dishes, because they were both light and delicious. We had some of the deserts as well, but I don't recall the names. The cinnamon punch/juice was fantastic, like Lee L said. Service was really good, but sometimes there seemed to be miscommunication. How fun to find some good Korean food in Dublin. The menu includes the traditional favorites like bulgogi and bibimbap, as well as a variety of of stew and noodle dishes. Adventurous tastes abound, and you can even get some of the spicy hotness that makes Korean food so good. The Korean desserts were quite nice as well. Definitely try the cinnamon punch/juice drinks for a refreshing end to a really nice meal. The only weakness was the banchan, with only a couple of dishes offered and a little sparse. The ones we did get were nice, including some decent kimchi. The staff was friendly and attentive. The place has a lively atmosphere with a wide variety of people. One side of hop-house is a restaurant and the other side is a pub. Because we didn't want to wait to sit at a restaurant, we went inside the pub. Here you can sneak a peak at the various mixed Asian + Irish couples sipping beer. I ate the standard Korean bbq dish, bulgogi. It wasn't bad and the meat was deliciously marinated. However, large slices of onions were awkwardly thrown on top. Usually, I prefer my onions thinly sliced and caramelized to perfection. A major part of Korean food is the banchan. Various little side dishes: kimchee, sweet potato, seaweed, bean sprouts, etc. Sometimes I feel that the side dishes themselves constitute a culinary adventure. In the best restaurants they will serve you 10+ banchan. And, it is perfectly acceptable, and indeed expected, that you ask for refills. Unfortunately, Hop-house's banchan was meager. I don't remember exactly what it was (kimchee and maybe another) but I remember being disappointed with the selection. Also, for dinner, I found the price slightly on the high side. I think lunch would probably be a much better deal. Overall, hop-house is a decent Korean restaurant. Service was good and the pub seems like an interesting haunt for local Koreans. read more

Can't believe I'm giving 4 stars to a Korean place in Dublin, but it's true. It's SOLID KOREAN FOOD. I have a problem with Korean restaurants in Europe not giving ban chan (side dishes) and charging for rice (absolutely horrified!) but seeing that that's the norm, I can't minus stars for that. Taste alone, this place deserves 4 stars. I asked the chef to make my Kimchi stew extra hot because I knew he catered towards non-korean palates and he definitely delivered, home-style. After 3 days straight of nothing but fried breakfasts, fish&chips, and late night piss-ups , the lads and I were looking for a ray of lightness and healthiness to break up the rainy Dublin summer, and on god knows whose suggestion, we, (a party of seven) opted for a Korean dinner at this restaurant one Sunday evening. The service was a bit dodgy, as I think most of the waiters were college kids- at various times we had 2 waiters and another server at our table, but still they were a bit disorganized and also the waiter who took our order made a couple of mistakes, for example giving my brother an order of shrimp tempura when he had ordered a tempura udon, bringing one glass of water when asked for a pitcher of water, and also the server spilled a bit of soup and me but was not particularly apologetic about it. We countered the general disorganization by using the service bell attached to the table whenever we needed anything, and generally this helped loads. Overall the quality and portion size was very good at this restaurant, as were the beers- because of the attached bar they have a great selection of beers on draught. Therefore, pecadilloes aside the food was good and I would heartily recommend the restaurant, also they have a bar/live house and a beer garden, how many Korean restaurants have that? read more

Even though they were all sweet, they were so disorganized and seemingly overwhelmed. We just laughed, the servers did things like wander away in the middle of our order. Kimchi Hop-House was my second go at Korean fare and by far my favourite of the two options I tried. Very modest in terms of décor both inside and out-front, however, the food they serve up is fresh, filling, flavourful and excellent value. The dumplings we started with were so moreish that I instantly regretted getting them as a sharer! I would more than happily have gobbled up the four little crispy parcels of deliciousness myself given the opportunity! Being ever so slightly obsessed with their Japanese cousins - gyoza, I have to say that these little delicacies hit the spot equally as well (apart from Musashi's but those are on another leve!l). I had the Beef Bulgogi for my main - beef sliced uber thin and fried with veggies and served with rice, kimchi and other little tasty accompaniments. The dish was hearty and filling and rich in that umami flavour you so often find in Asian dishes, it was really delicious. Quick word on the beef, when it was first brought to table, I thought it looked a little unappetising and quite stringy, however, upon tasting it was soft but still with a little bite to it. I've heard before in Asian cooking, it's preferable to serve meat with a chewier texture and this may not always suit our Western palates (it's also due to how the meat is cooked - stir-fried on a very high heat). Despite my initial hesitation, I did really enjoy my beef dish, the fermented kimchi lends such a depth of flavour, it's such a unique taste and one which I really love! This is a great spot for those looking for great value, tasty food with little fanfare, I'm most certainly a fan and want to try one of their steaming bowls of noodles next time - they look so so good! read more

The food is quite delicious. However, and this is a very big however, the service is atrocious. We waited 35 minutes before anyone came to our table to take our order. The staff seemed annoyed at any request we made including asking for water. Some requests were just flat out ignored. I can't stress enough how bad and frustrating the service was and how much it detracted what was good food. Make sure you block out 2+ hours to deal with this openly hostile service. If you can handle a wait staff that makes you the customer feel like an inconvenience than this is the place for you. The food gets 4 stars and the service gets -3. Enjoy at your own risk. read more

Superb restaurant ! Never really had any Korean / Japanese food before but this has set the standards fairly high for any other restaurant. I had the salmon salad as a starter and a beef main (forgot the name, terribad with names sorry :P ) with some traditional sake and a japanese beer. Was very, very good. Enjoyed the food, excellent service and the waitress did not mock me at all for not being able to eat with sticks and provided a fork to put me out of my misery :P So a big thank you to the very helpfull staff, a must go to for every fan of food in general ! read more

Kimchi is a nice Korean/Japanese restaurant attached to a sports bar which is a bit strange admittedly. It seems quite an authentic place and my partner loves this place. To me the food is varied and sounds delicious. Service is pretty good and everything is fine. I just haven't really enjoyed the food as much as I thought I would. I've been twice and had different dishes each time. Last time I had a Bento Box which was ok although some of the extras were a bit tasteless for me. I had a Prawn/crab stick sushi type dish and dumplings the last time. The Dumplings were nice and the crab sticksushu pieces were ok, but very fishy ( i know but a bit too fishy ). The Prawn Sushi rolls were very very nice however. I'd be willing to try again, but not overwhelmed at the moment. Prices are quite reasonible which is a bonus. read more

Was my first time here so I had try something I had never eaten before. To start I went for the chicken amd leek dumplings which we scantly drizzled in a sauce but it was delicious. The main, I can't remember the name but it was a Korean chicken dish. It was a dry chicken coated in Korean spices, they had used chicken thigh so it was moist and didnt need to have a sauce. It came with a big side of rice and a small portion of Kimchi. I was there Sunday afternoon so it was still the lunch menu which was very reasonably priced, €5 for the appetiser and €7.50 for the main! This used to be a no-go area when it was known as the Shakespeare. More recently however it has become something of a must visit on the northside. What we have here is a pub with a good value (authentic) Asian restaurant attached. The obvious advantage here is you can have your pre-dinner drink in the pub atmosphere and walk all of five yards to your table - which is basic but the food is good and more importantly good value. If you really fancy it you can have some of the warm rice wine but I think I'll stick to the Chablis. read more

I came in as a walk in customer, with Tim and Brian following me over after being held up. I was seen by a staff member straight away who managed to grab a table for the three of us and offered me water/drinks while I waited for the rest of the group. We got the last table available and were told in advance that a booking was in and we would have to move along before they arrived, that suited us and they were very polite and helpful about it but I would definitely advise booking as it's quite busy. I had the beef bulgogi which was beautiful, we shared a pitcher of beer which was very reasonably priced, I'd recommend the small pitcher as it covered three pints quite nicely. Everything we ordered arrived surprisingly quickly and the atmosphere was really good, this place is definitely a new favourite of mine, especially for pre-night out or event/gigs, especially considering that the service is like clockwork it's ideally suited to that. I was really excited to try this place as I miss the pub attached to an Asian restaurant thing that happens a lot in London. The food was good but we waited over 40 minutes for it after waiting 20 minutes to order so 1 hour after arriving at the restaurant we got our first dish. Unfortunately we had to be at a talk for 8pm so were rushed and the thing I usually love about bibimbap - that it doesn't get cold because it's in a fiery cauldron - was a total pain when you are trying to shove a pound of veggie rice down your throat in 10 minutes. I'd definitely go back to give it another shot but would make sure I'd nowhere to be afterwards. Food was 4 star, service 2 star so it gets 3 overall. read more

I enjoyed this place overall. The food was no better or worse then what I've tasted in any of the other Japanese / Korean restaurants in the North City area -Musashi and Arisu to name two. I did not get the Bimibap, which others complained tasted bland, but the Mandu dumplings and Beef Teriyaki were lovely. The various stir fried dishes my friends ordered also looked nice. The beer and Guinness were very cheap, which was a definite plus. I think the service could've been better, the staff were not very attentive and difficult to flag down, especially as we chose to eat in the bar area. It was also not particularly atmospheric, very casual and 'pub-like', with harsh lighting - not the best place to bring a date I reckon. However, that aside, we enjoyed the food and the cheap booze. My friends and I eat here all the time and I've yet to be disappointing. Their sushi strikes a great balance between quality and price, with a fun and varied special roll selection. They have a great menu of non-sushi items as well which are all fantastic. As a New Yorker living in Dublin, it is also the only Asian Fusion I've yet to come across that does a dish that comes close to tasting like General Tso's Chicken (Dakgangjeong). Though the restaurant is a bit small, the waiters will usually offer seating in the pub Hop House if you don't have a reservation and the overall experience is laid back and friendly. Bibimbap is my favourite healthy comfort food; rice,veg, meat, an egg in a superhot bowl, mix in as much chilli sauce as you like and the heat from the bowl cooks up the ear and makes the rice nice and crispy. I eat here about once a month and try to vary the dishes I order but get bibimbap at least 50% of the time. The hophouse is a charming oasis of calm just off bustling O' Connell Street. read more

A super meal had by all in The Hop House. The surroundings of the restaurant/pub have been reviewed ad nauseum so I will stick with the food which is delicious. My friend and I shared the chef's sushi selection which had 8 assorted pieces of sushi for 12.50 which in my opinion is super value versus other asian establishments in the city. The fish was very fresh and was devoured in rapid time. I had the Bibimbap with the chilli sauce which was top drawer, the stone bowl was piping hot and left a beautiful crunch on the rice. You get a free side of Kimchi also which is a lovely addition. My friend had a spicy broth dish which was huge with tofu, beef, cabbage. I don't remember the name but it was number 61 on the menu. Very positive review on this also. Total bill came to 38 euro for both of us which in my opinion was great value for what we got. read more

Okay, I tried really hard not to have high expectations since I'm coming from the Silicon Valley where there is plentiful and truly delicious Korean food. Sadly, there weren't as many options on the menu as I was hoping for (e.g. no beef/pork soondobu, no kalbi, no ban chans!!!), but the bibimbop I got was okay. The meat was a little over marinated in my opinion and was a bit mushy and not quite meat-y enough. The vegetables included in the bibimbop didn't stand out to me in terms of freshness/taste either. Went there for a Foodie Club meetup. Always wanted to try it out as I love me Asian food authentic and cheap! The restaurant itself is a restaurant plus a traditional Irish pub convert. Might suit some, but I find the pub seating very uncomfortable to sit in for a full meal. First things first -- drinks. The bar offered quite a nice array of Asian and Western drinks, however the service was beyond desperate. Me and my boyfriend actually gave up a few times because of the wait, if it weren't for its interesting drinks list, I would have just forgotten it! Menu had most standards and some fusion dishes. I went for the bibimbap standard to test the authenticity of the cooking. It measured up to my expectations but nothing outstanding. The service again was quite bad. We were waiting quite a while to order, and took at least an hour between sitting down and being served food. The owner of the place was very nice and offered our party of 12 three bottles of Korean wine for the wait. Overall very disappointed with their slow service, their food was quite ok for how they're priced. I would go there if I felt I needed a Korean fix, but only if I had two hours to spare! Think I just found my favourite Korean restaurant in Dublin. Have 2 Korean sisters in law - I know, random - and they both had mentioned this place many times but only got around to trying it today. Went for a pint first in the pub which connected to the restaurant. Pub was nice, rugby match was on but it was not too crowded and a nice chilled crowd. Once we had our pints we moved to the restaurant part. The place itself ( like the pub) is by no means fancy or "posh" but - oh my God - the food was amazing, probably one of the best I have had in Dublin in a while. Myself and my fiancé ordered two different starters and mains so got to try 4 different things. Everything was absolutely delicious, way better than a lot of similar restaurants I have tried. I was also surprised as the prices were extremely reasonable considering the generous portions and superb quality. Definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to try some authentic good Korean food, will go back. read more
