Kim's Taekwondo Center is definitely the best taekwondo place in Minneapolis! Not only is the instruction top quality, but also everyone is super friendly. It is also a diverse environment; kids from different ages all practice together. Sometimes you see students from University of Minnesota come and practice as well. Kim's is the Premier TKD gym in MN, and great for kids and adults alike. My entire family has trained to black belt. The instructors and students are like family to us, and we've even traveled to South Korea together! Highly recommended. It will change your life for the better. read more

So a couple months ago, around January I was looking at PE related classes at the UMN and I noticed that the university offered Taekwondo classes. I looked up the instructor on "Rate my Professors" and the trend in the comments was that the classes on campus were a lot more dumbed down and he offered classes at his Academy at a discounted price. Some even said that they were able to go there and take classes FOR FREE. The following day, I called up the company's number and I was told by the instructor that my payment was going to be $60 a month for the student discounted price. So I went in the following week to arrange payments. Now the person I spoke to on the phone was Aaron Kim, but when I got there, I did the payment arrangement with his father. Basically I told the father that I was planning on taking classes at the UMN in addition to the classes at his academy (mainly for the discount), but I was advised against taking classes at the UMN for the reason that it was "dumbed down" and that I only needed to take classes at the Blaine location. So basically the father was going to have me pay 1400 (before taxes) for a 15mo term with waved uniform fees ($40) because "I was traveling so far", saying that all of this is a huge discount "for me". By the way, I didn't end up even getting the uniform discount for some reason. So all of this amounts to the start up fees (uniforms, taxes etc) and the 1400. I told him I couldn't pay the almost 1800 total (I do pay for tuition....I have school etc). So I said I'd pay half and pay the rest monthly. Throughout all of this, I was under the assumption that I was being given a "student discount" of $60 a month, which I would pay monthly like a gym membership, but that wasn't the case. Half of the payment with taxes amounted to $860 with me paying $81 a month until I paid off what amounted to be 1800 with taxes and fees. Again, I was told I'd only be paying $60 a month, but if I divided the total by the "12mo term - getting three months free" I'd be paying $144 a month, or TWICE the amount I was initially promised. There is some accountability in the sense that I should have read through the documents and calculated the payments before blindly signing and agreeing with what the person is saying, but I was given absolutely no time to look at the contract, I was told to sign it and he took it. At the time, I was highly highly interested in learning Taekwondo and my experiences going to the first three personal training sessions was a good experience in terms of learning the art of the sport, so I didn't care that I was being ripped off. The instructor did teach Taekwondo well; there was nothing wrong with the quality of service. But there is everything wrong with their consumer practices. About a week or so after I started attending classes, I got into a major car accident totaling my car and leaving me (currently carless) until I can purchase another car. The insurance had covered the debt I had on my car. Despite this, I was still interested in attending classes, but I was so worried about even getting to my classes at school that venturing to Blaine was just not a priority. I ended up having to withdraw from my morning classes, because there was just no way I could get to it on time (relying on uber and such). So I gave up the possibility of attending the Taekwondo classes. I texted the instructor to see if I could postpone classes, no response. So I ended up calling the instructor a couple weeks later, explaining the situation and telling him I couldn't physically get to class so I wanted a refund for part of the term that I paid for, which was half of the term basically. At first, he called me out for the fact that I had a HUGE discount already, thinking that I was only paying $860 for 15mo. I had to make it clear that I was paying 1800 and really this proves my point that I was being ripped of in the first place. He basically refused the refund saying that they don't do it. I had him send the contract and to reiterate for everyone, if you are physically injured, disabled have health issues or have any problems coming to the Taekwondo classes THERE IS NO REFUND. So I paid $860 for less than a week of classes, I was ripped off with the payments before hand, and the fact that I cannot attend classes and I cannot anticipate when I can attend classes due to a car accident is not sufficient enough for a refund for the unattended months. And all I can say is that as a company that serves consumers, I highly recommend not falsifying discounts when there is none and to reiterate your policies like any other sane company. read more
