I found this salon off Yelp, being new to the area and coming from atlanta im use to having my weave LAID for under $100. after reading the reviews i thought some ppl may just be overdramatic so ill see for myself.....I've waited about a month to review so that I can also give a review on how the hair that is bought from her is holding up. The hair: still in good condition, my only problem is that it sheds more than what I'm use to. When I comb or even run my fingers through it I have strands coming out. Kina: nice woman, can style very well The weave as a whole: I feel like it could have been done better. The braiding process was fine. Not too tight or too loose. BUT it's not flat. I can't pull into a ponytail without it looking bumpy. I have ALOT of leave out, which I had her bring in and I was assured that I needed that much to cover the tracks. And just as i thought its a NIGHTMARE to try to blend everyday with so much of my natural hair left out. I didn't want to curl and flat iron my natural hair everyday like I have to now. Theres almost no weave in the front so u less my natural hair is curled, the front doesn't look full. Im noticing loose thread as well. So for what I paid, I honestly expected much more than what I received. I paid a lot of money with Kina so I wasn't going to just take it out, but I won't be returning. This review isn't to throw shade but to give my honest opinion. UPDATE IN RESPONSE TO KINA:::: I feel like $175 for a sew in is the same money in DC as in Atlanta. If I'm paying that money no matter what the market, it definitely have high standards and definitely shouldn't be double tracked, which is what Im sure led to the bumpiness. The blending issue was because of too much hair being left out from the first wks. I've had installs longer than 6 to 7 wks and it held up just fine. I have been taken this install down. I gave this a one star for many reasons... I've been going to Kina for a while and she charges $150-$300 for a $50 priced weave. She sell low grade hair for $300. Kina is all about taking people's money because she is the partial owner of the shop. I've tried to work with her, but she will not fix her mess up without charging you a brand new price. I wish her all the best, but if you are looking for a hairdresser that actually cares about growing your hair, you are at the wrong place, go find someone else read more

Today was my first time going to Kina. And I have to say she is the ONLY stylist that I know that does weaves GREAT AND cares about your real hair-that really impressed me ALOT. Some stylists really don't care about the state of your natural hair. But I called first and asked if I should wash my hair before my appt and she insisted I didn't. She put in this keratin sp?? treatment and gave me tips etc. I love that. Her cutting and styling skills were ON POINT. She's also fast. I was out in like 2 hours. Couldn't believe that. The salon is pretty too. And the other stylists are friendly and nice as well. read more

Every now and again I like to go back to see what other people think. I'm reading the weave comments and YIKES!!! The whole point of leaving more hair out is to make it look natural...that is actually one of the things I appreciate about weaves by Kina...I got my most recent weave right before I started a new job. It was full length down the middle of my back...when I finally took it out, everyone thought I had just cut my natural hair. That is a testimony to the way Kina's weaves look...they look real and natural. I work in an environment that is predominately AA, so they know weaves and they know BAD weaves..... Before I found kina, i got a weave done and it was a disaster, it was itchy and I had to take it out after a week. I decided to search on yelp to see if I could find a good hair stylist., that was affordable and I found Kina. Yay!! She does my weaves and my touch ups. I trust her to style my hair as she chooses and it always comes out looking amazing. I always get compliments on my hair. She cancelled the morning of my appointment after I commuted over an hour to get to her shop. She did not have a set backup plan set in place and would not even pick up my calls before my arrival. Had she given me the COMMON COURTESY of calling BEFORE my appointment, I would've been more understanding. The fact remains that she never picked up her phone, she never sent me an early text saying she was sick. Why wait until 5 minutes AFTER the appointment should have commenced to FINALLY pick up the phone to say you were ill? At the very least, a text before the appointment time would have sufficed and given me time to find another stylist of my choosing. Furthermore, when someone was finally able to do my hair and it came time to make the payment, I had to go to CVS to get cash because the woman (who was so kind to take me in for an appointment) did not have a card machine. Again, Kina did not answer the phone for the other stylist or for me. Had she answered the phone, we could have used the StyleSeat app for payment (which is what I have done with every StyleSeat appointment I have EVER had in EVERY place I have frequented). I do not walk around with huge wads of cash, and my bank is not in this area. I do not use random ATMs for obvious reasons. I saw the poverty stricken area I was in and knew right away the ATM was not safe. There are scammers all over DC, so I would rather buy a candy bar at CVS and get cash back than touch a ghetto ATM. All in all, Kina showed a complete lack of professionalism! Her first impression was her worst impression. NEVER AGAIN!! IN RESPONSE TO MARKINA BAILEY: In my experience, people trying to undermine a customer, who is actually gainfully employed, are trying to justify their lack of customer service skills. I'm an Ivy League educated black woman that went to college on full ride scholarships, so don't try to come at me about what I make because I am well taken care of. You come off as a ghetto hoodrat in a ghetto shop barely making ends meet. You're the one that needs clients. Also, your shelf next to the sink bowls fell on another client and me. You should worry about your shop that's falling apart rather than attacking hard-working clients. You sound like a bitter, miserable woman. Calling me an angry black woman for YOUR behavioral deficiencies? It sounds like self-hate you're projecting onto others. Don't be such a stereotype. Low class and trifling are befitting for you as these traits are reflected by your shop, your work ethic, your work itself, your behavior, and your attitude. To add, no one got declined, sweetheart. How can you get declined if you never used a card to begin with? My banking institution is in my home state. I came back with the $50 IN CASH because I went to CVS to get cash back. I don't go to sketchy banks in the ghetto where your dinghy shop is located. I knew that using an unmarked ATM was risky to do in such a dangerous neighborhood with scheming people. You clearly post lies as rebuttals on every negative review you receive. Maybe you should realize that your work, your customer service skills, your attitude, and your raggedy shop are lacking quality. Had I known the shop was in the poor part of DC, I wouldn't have booked to begin with. I'm currently in Brazil enjoying my work trip. As you scramble to put together your next lie, I'll be on the beach. You appear and sound extremely uneducated and tacky. Your reviews and responses to said reviews are a clear reflection of your service. Maybe if you'd have some class about yourself, you'd do much better. Just some advice for you in the future. Also, learn how to handle criticism because you seem to be a bit pressed about customers sharing REAL experiences. Kina, I still stand by my review, it was an absolute NIGHTMARE. As a matter of fact, I tried to make contact with you and received absolutely no response, you basically ignored call, text, and email. Lucy-Ann V's review of your services was pretty much similar to my experience. You choose not to listen when client is trying to explain to you what they would like. I work in a professional environment and there was absolutely no way I would have gone to work with a weave that bad, thus my taking it out the same day. Yes, $250 is a lot of money to be thrown away, but I am very particular about my hair. I stated the hair you provided was OVERPRICED, which I did not use. Kina has been doing my hair extensions for years. She is excellent and very professional, not to mention fast as well. Not a lot of chit-chat, the girl is all about my hair. Prices are pretty reasonable, about the standard rate. I usually order my hair online and just go in to get it done. Saves a lot of time for me. The space is homey and clean. read more

I used Yelp to find a highly recommended hair stylist and came across Kina. While there were only a few reviews they were all credible so I decided to give her a try. I'm so happy that I did! I arrived at Kina's salon at 4:30pm and she was done with me by 6:30. How's that for "in" and "out"? Most importantly, my do was absolutely gorgeous!! Kina cut and styled my weave in a way that was perfect for my face. Kina's salon is modest yet comfortable. She gives a fantastic wash and uses great products. Kina is very down to earth and works with you to ensure you have a style that you will love, will best compliment you, and that will be most manageable for you. She also gives you helpful tips on how to best care for your hair.The entire experience was very rejuvenating and I walked out feeling extremely satisfied. Kina gets an A+ for efficiency and for excellent customer service. I will certainly be relying on her in the future for my hair styling needs. read more

I went to Kina in September. What I liked about Kina is that she did my weave well and did it quickly (I was only there for 2 hours or 2.5 hours). When she was sewing in my weave, I felt that it was tight and knew it was going to last long. I still have in it and it still looks good! The only reason why I am giving her four stars is that it was 250 dollars and I wish she (or the salon) was more upfront about that. The website said 150...hmm. I just got a full weave bob style hairstyle. Kina did a phenomenal job on my hair. The process was quick. Appointment was at 1:00pm and I was out a little after 3:00pm. My hair looks natural and does not look fake at all. She uses great quality hair. Also, she gives great tips on how to maintain your hair, which is always a plus. I'm giving this place 1 star because of the Pizza place close by other than that, I did not enjoy anything. The girl that braided my hair didn't even really try to grip anything. She was very lazy and quiet. And gave me a terrible base. The tracks weren't completely sew in it looks very bulky and rushed. Then she had the nerve to charge me $20 to sew on my OWN netted cap. This place is wack and in a awful location. Very classless and I will never go back. read more

Ok so I didn't go to Kina blind(which is very scary), she was recommended by a friend(thanks Deidre), and I am so glad that I went. I am a very particular about my hair, and was scared to branch out to a salon that wasn't super expensive. When I could no longer afford to go, I just got braids continous for a year. When I first met Kina, she instanly put me at ease. When it was all said and done, I was looking FABULOUS!! When i first got to DC I went through a trial and error period with respect to hair stylists. Finally I searched yelp and found Kina who came hghly recommended by past reviewers. Despite her many good reviews I was still a little hesitant going to her but any fears or doubts i had were quickly erased after the great job she did on my hair. Aside from the great hair care, kina and her coworkers are very friendly and the atmosphere in the salon is a very comfortable one. NEVER AGAIN!!! I must say that this is the first time I have been truly disappointed in Yelp. While you should expect that not all businesses will have true reviews from real clients, I really put 100% trust into the reviews for Kina. I went to Kina with shoulder length hair and was looking for a change. I asked for a cut, found a picture and showed it to her. This would have been the point where she should have told me that she either did not feel comfortable cutting or was not good at it. I would have appreciated that more that having her butcher my hair. While cutting my hair, she repositioned my hair so I could not see in the mirror...again, I had full trust in the reviews and was certain she was doing a great job. After she was done she pured some black goo and wrapped my hair in this black paper. Once my hair had dried and she curled about 50% she finally showed me the mirror. It looked okay at first; however I realized after I got home that my hair was 5 different lengths and I could not touch it without having to immediately wash my hands because my fingers were back. Not only did I waste my money and time going to her; I wasted more money going to a knowledgeable stylist to fix Kina's mess. So no, she does not do an awesome job and I am pretty certain that she posted these reviews herself or paid someone to give her positive ratings. NEVER AGAIN!!! read more
