I had my first appointment with Collin this weekend. The local listserv recommended him and I'm so happy they did! My old stylist has decided on a new career path, and it's always scary to find someone new. Collin was great about listening to my concerns about my hair, and delivered a cute fresh style and styling tips I can duplicate at home easily. Getting an appointment was easy, and everyone at the salon was friendly and kind. Da: amazing at balayage and free-styling haircuts. She is talented and brings your hair back alive. Adriana: listens to what you want and gives you exactly what you're looking for. I love coming to her for my in-between trims!! Shampoo station team: you'll get a warm hair wash and conditioning as well as a scalp massage. Mmmm. When I was working in DC, Da was my go-to. Since I am no longer close by, I go when I am treating myself. After this last cut, however, I will not be back. My hair was a complete disaster! I have no idea what happened. One side of my hair was cut and layered more than the other. She cut layers in the crown of my head and cut my bangs super short. I have naturally curly hair, so when she dried it with a diffuser, my bangs were only about 2 inches long. Also, because it was curly, it was not entirely noticeable how absolutely messed up my hair was. It wasn't until the next day when I styled it straight that I noticed. Unfortunately, I was going out of town that day and could not go back to DC. I was in tears! I ended up walking in at the Ulta salon down by my house where a very nice girl did what she could to salvage it. However, there wasn't much she could do, because I was trying not to miss my flight. She had to cut it dry, but at least it wasn't noticeably longer on one side than the other. Now I am stuck with this horrible cut which cost me double! ;( I DO NOT RECOMMEND! read more

I had a very bad experience. I waited close to an hour after my scheduled appointment and was not satisfied with my hair at all. I went in for a trim and Collin cut more than I asked. More importantly the balayage was horrible. It was not done all over like I asked but I'm glad because it fried my hair and ended up with almost blonde hair. Not worth it at all. I decided to cut my super long locks this year and I wish I came to Collin first. I went somewhere else, showed pics of that I wanted, explained my hair routine...and got a bunk haircut!!! If you have curly hair, get your hair cut by Collin at Michael Anthony Salon! I was very loyal to my hair stylist in Boston, and was scared of getting my haircut elsewhere after going to the previous salon for close to 10 years. The problem with curly hair is that everyone's texture and curls are different, so it's super hard to cut. Collin does an amazing job framing my face, and he never rushes. (My blowout always looks fabulous--the only time I get one is after a haircut!) A note about the location as a whole -- the front desk manager is friendly, they always have chocolate/candy, the bathroom is clean, and you get a nice head massage when they wash your hair. read more

I normally do not write reviews this soon after visiting a place, but Gerald worked some serious magic on my hair and from start to finish, this was an enjoyable experience and one of the best ones I've had getting a hair cut! I just moved to the DC area a few months ago and have been trying to find my "place," and by "place," I mean salon that actually does a good job with my hair. This is always a challenge and some salons have a habit of not taking into consideration what their clients want, which is what my first DC salon experience was like. Right away I knew I was in good hands with Gerald who does my friend's hair. She recommended me to him and her hair is really beautiful and the cuts she gets always look fantastic. Gerald gave me Victoria's Secret style hair and did a great dye job. The shampoo ladies made me feel truly relaxed and the whole experience was friendly and professional. I felt like I was being listened to and that I was getting a high-quality experience. The salon itself is in Eastern Market which is a cute part of town. The salon is upstairs so it feels a bit secluded and everyone I saw who was getting their hair done looked AWESOME when they were leaving. Da gave me exactly the cut I wanted (I'm a woman w/ very short pixie-style hair) - understood precisely what I was looking for and made it happen in the best-suited way to my hair type and face shape. And her colleague who did the wash was very kind and gentle and gave possibly the best head massage I've ever had. Kendra is great at what she does! I went in a few months before my wedding to go from dirty blonde to chocolatey brunette and she was very patient as I showed her pictures and talked through the color I wanted, concerns I had, etc. When I got home and noticed my roots had turned out a little darker than I had hoped for, I called the salon and Kendra fit me in 48 hours later to throw some more highlights in. She wasn't rude about it at all, didn't rush to get me out of there so she could take on a paying client, and told me to call again if I still wasn't satisfied. Rarely have I found that level of commitment to customer satisfaction at a salon in DC. Will definitely be returning after my wedding this fall for a touch up! read more

I have wavy/curly hair, the type that many hairstylists in DC encourage you to straighten instead of embracing the curls. Styling and cutting curly hair is NO SMALL FEAT. As is such, I am extremely picky about people who do my hair. I was extremely impressed with the service - from booking to the appointment - at the Michael Anthony Salon. You know how its a "thing" that people hate their haircuts when they first get home? For once, that didn't happen to me! The first time I came in to the salon I needed to tone some highlights. Kendra was friendly - in the salon stylist manner - but also really relatable. She asked me for pictures and descriptions of the look I was going for and was very thorough. She was the first stylist I've worked with who I didn't just ask small talk questions and as an avid yelp user, great service is really important to me. Minus 1 star for the high prices - but it is on Capitol Hill so I'm not sure that is avoidable. I would definitely come back. You should try this place out - you won't be disappointed! read more

Unfortunately, I've gone through a few different stylists at Michael Anthony over the years. Fortunately, they've always found another wonderful stylist to fill the void. I currently see Collin, who provides me a solid, albeit basic, cut every three months and never pressures me to do anything dramatic. My only complaint about the salon is that I have to have my life together enough to make appointments weeks in advance, which is rarely the case. Or, should I have the foresight to make an appointment in advance but need to reschedule, I'm stuck looking a hot mess for a few more weeks. The receptionist was very nice upon arrival and at the end with a Lyft as I left in the rain. Collin was everything and more! This was my 2nd haircut and this one was the worse ever. I loved my first haircut, I got Da and told her I wanted her to do her thing. I wasn't a fan of all the layers so after waiting an entire year with only going back once for a trim I was exited to get a 'sexy Bob' My birthday is coming up so I wanted to get a new dew again. My hair was Long enough for a long bob. I get to my appt and tell Da I want a sexy long bob, no layers because I hate them on my frizzy hair and it's too much maintenance to curl my hair everyday. A sexy sleek bob would have been perfect Soooo as I tell Da what I want she tells me a bob with my hair will be way too dull and flat. It's ok I wanted flat and a straight Blunt but with my hair a symmetrical coming down in the front. She starts doing HER thing telling me It's not good for a bob on my hair and a few layers would look great even though she knows I don't want layers :0( End result I leave with her telling me I have a young sassy haircut, funny I asked for a SEXY BOB!! Wtf?! Today is day 3 and I hate my haircut, it flips and looks like a shag and it looks like crap on me. Unless I curl it which takes an hour it will look crappy. I don't like the layers she cut and instead of a blunt cut I got a bushy shag. Ugly ugly ugly I will NEVER come back and even tho my hair grows very fast my birthday sexiness is ruined. $80 for a sh$tty haircut that was not what I asked for If you want a specific look DONT see Da, sorry but I'm so mad I hate my shag and feel Stooopid I paid so much for this. I had to wait a few weeks to cool down before writing this. I am currently recovering from a hair disaster as a result of this salon. I went in with long thick voluminous natural black hair and left with over-processed, orangey highlights, and an awful cut that was nothing that I asked for. I told the stylist I just wanted a trim and to "clean it up", she seemed to understand that and be on the same page . I also brought in a picture of the hair color that I wanted and showed her specifically that I wanted a natural looking ombre, with just a brown color at the bottom. I told her I was very apprehensive about the color, and was very upfront that I didn't want to do it if she thought it would be brassy. I thought I was very clear, apparently I wasn't. Instead, I ended up with brownish orange highlights at the roots (far from ombre). She left the foils on way too long as she decided it was a good idea to take additional clients while working on me. This resulted in very splotchy highlights in some parts (which were later pointed out to me by several people). I totally get that coloring naturally dark hair can be difficult and that a brassy effect is unfortunately the result often times, but for allegedly one of the best salons in DC the result I got just seemed unacceptable. I didn't notice just how horrific they were until I got home and saw them in natural light, not the soft lighting the salon had. I also had a ton of highlights on one side, and hardly any on the other. Now on to the part that left me absolutely furious. The stylist decided, that without asking me AT ALL that she would thin my hair out in the back. I felt her cut in at the bottom layer of my hair and thought "she can't be thinning my hair can she?" I couldn't say anything because she was halfway through before I fully realized what was happening. To any stylist out there NEVER THIN A CLIENT'S HAIR WITHOUT ASKING THEM FIRST, seriously. It grows back a hot mess, and if they don't ask for it, they don't want it. She also did a terrible job of blowing out my hair. It took her over 45 minutes and it was puffy and frizzy. It really didn't look like she knew what she was doing at that point. I initially booked a second appointment with the hopes of discussing my frustrations, but I just couldn't go through with it. Instead I decided to go to another salon who fixed the awful cut as best they could (and also pointed out the terrible thinning job the stylist did) and put a dark gloss over my hair to cover up the awful highlights that happened. My advice, if you have thick hair just avoid this place at all costs, they really don't know what they are doing with that kind of hair. When I booked my appointment I specifically asked for someone who was good with "extremely thick hair" and that certainly didn't happen. Obviously they have a lot of great reviews (why I initially picked them) so they are doing something right, but again if you have a lot of hair, I suggest going elsewhere, unless of course you feel like shelling out $400 on your hair in a two week span to fix a colossal screw up of a haircut and highlight . read more

I have found my favorite stylist in the area. While I loved going to my old stylist, I began to find that after only a couple of weeks my cut would grow out. Despite the great price, it was no longer worth it for me to make the trek on such a frequent basis. Mind you, I have mid length fine hair with long layers. After hearing about Mickey in a few different newspapers I decided to make an appointment. I loved the fact that they were so responsive over email and that I had no difficulty getting an appointment (I called about a week and a half to two weeks in advance). From the first time I've gone there I've had a great experience. The shampoo lady gives a great massge, I never really have to explain to Mickey what I want in order to come out with a great cut, and the location above Eastern Market is super relaxing. Overall, I dig this place. The only downside is the price---but hey, if I only have to go back every 10-12 weeks versus every 4, I think it is well worth it. read more
