Just layers of sweetness
Danna E.

Heard about this place and finally came here on the afternoon of Sat 3/21. It's located on the main street so you have to park nearby and walk to King of Kabab. There's a corner liquor store next door so if you want to try your luck and buy a scratcher while dining or picking up food to go, here's a perfect location to kill two birds with one stone. First time visiting this joint and I was impressed! The protein (chicken) was not overcooked and had the right amount of flavor. They wrap their delicious chicken shawarma's tighter than a burrito! Next to the cashier on the left is a little window of Turkish delight (sweets). I ordered the red-velvet + orange + lemon flavored treats. Looked appealing, but after I took a bit of the red velvet, everything stuck to my teeth and had to do extra work with the dental scalpel. It's like layers of hardened fruit roll up with molasses of the flavor. The cahier did warn me that this was sweet with a small side eye that I shoulda caught right away bc I did go in for quite the surprise. Ambience and customer service was on point. They offered for us to sit in the outdoor dining, but we ended up taking our order to go. Stop by this joint when you're in town, you won't be disappointed!

Lamb & beef gyro plate

We were in the area after a trip to IKEA and were craving Mediterranean food. I checked Yelp and saw that King Kebab was open on New Year's Eve, so we decided to stop by. We arrived about 15 minutes after they opened, and they were still setting up. The person who helped us, who I assume was the owner, was very friendly and welcoming. I ordered the gyro plate, and my partner got the gyro wrap. I asked for my gyro meat to be on the crispy side, and it came out exactly how I wanted. Everything tasted great. The rice was very flavorful, which I really appreciated, and the salad was light and refreshing. My favorite part was the house-made hot sauce. You have to ask for it, but it's worth it. It reminded me a lot of sambal and added a great kick. My only minor complaint is that the gyro meat was sliced into very small strips, almost like French fries. I personally prefer the more traditional thin gyro slices that are about an inch wide. The inside is also pretty small, with only a few tables, so it's more of a quick stop than a place to linger. Overall, the food was good, the service was friendly, and it's a solid spot for a quick meal. I would definitely come back again.

Lamb/beef kefta hella good

Okay King of Kabab, how did I not know about this Jordanian spot on San Pablo Ave. Chef Khaled and his crew bring delicious, flavorful, and fresh Levantine food to the Bay! I was greeted with a smile, lovely gents behind the grill too. I was craving the lamb/beef kefta plate. It was SO divine and mouth-watering. The rice was to die for, SO flavorful and they did not skimp on the cucumber salad or the kefta. I was very happy with the portion but more so with the delicious meal. The hummus is hella good and olive oil so delicious. The pita bread is on the thinner side, and super good with a little air fryer toast with a sprinkle of water. The website is super easy to navigate, and once you arrive there's street parking available. The shop itself is so homey and quaint. Small kitchen, but large desserts display case full of turkish delights and baklava, even a RARE but much-appreciated nut-free option. There were a few people dining in indoors, and they have an outdoor porch area too for the doggos. Highly recommend! Love supporting small biz, local, and of course good people. Would get that extra star if you'd remove your Coke products and replace it with Palestine soda!

Delicious food. I don't think enough people know about them. Great service as well, one item on my order was ver specific and they didn't just right. Hidden gem I hope stays around for a long time. Fresh and feels healthy. Love this place.

Chill outdoor ambiance would work for groups!

This cozy little dive has delicious food! We had our dog so sat outside where it was perfectly comfortable on a windy day. We started with the baba ganoush (eggplant dip) which was just the right amount of smokiness. The rice plate with perfectly seasoned and cooked meat was tasty; it came with plentiful rice and a tiny salad with creamy dressing (honey dijon?). The housemade hot sauce was SO good, not too spicy. Their baklava was perfect, too, moist and fresh. The service was friendly and efficient. They were getting lots of takeout orders, too. We asked about the bathroom, which said "out of order" but was clean and worked. (They had to limit use since people who were not customers reportedly made a mess.) This will be our go-to for reasonably-priced, authentic to-go orders and casual outdoor (or indoors for couples) eats.

Chicken Shish Kabab

By the looks of this place you can tell the food gonna hit. I ordered the chicken shish kebab plate and it was delicious. Chicken was super tender, sauce on top was fresh, rice was flavorful, and the plate was overall so abundant. The two gentlemen working were very friendly. There were a few seats inside but my friend and I took our food to-go. 10/10!! Will definitely come back.

Nice little shop off San Pablo where we enjoyed their chicken kebab plate and salad. Took some time after ordering to get the food but it was hot and tasted fresh. The employees there were friendly and gave us tap water when we asked. The chicken kebab portions are generous. The desserts looked amazing but we didn't have enough room and had leftovers. Happy there is a local kebab place to visit!

Turkish delight, baklava

I just came in here for the first time, and it's all so delicious. We got the chicken shawarma and the meze plate, both so good. The house hot sauce is to die for. They also have a killer assortment of Turkish delights. I'll definitely be back.

Fresh treats, great drink selection, definitely one of the best in the East Bay. Either coming back from a trip or getting ready to leave for one this is a must stop for me. The food is both welcoming and amazing.!

Lovely, private, quiet outdoor seating.

We were in town for an appointment and depended on Yelp for a good dinner choice walking distance from my appointment and our prime parking spot. Thanks Yelpers for brining us here! We especially liked that they have outdoor space, and this space is lovely. It has traffic noise if someone honks their horn, but is also completely shaded with covering and has tall wooded fence walls to shut out the commotion on the other side. We ordered at the counter and then the friendly man helping us, who turned out to be the owner, said he'd be happy to bring our food to us outside. There were plenty of choices for veggie eaters and meat eaters. I was happy to see all of my favorites. I had the gyro wrap with a side order of baba ghanoush and pita. My wife had a stuffed falafel plate. That was a lot of food! Going directly to the baba ghanoush, it was amazing. The best I've ever had. Not at all too oily, nice and smoky, and very creamy. The pita were perfect with it. They were a whole grain, maybe wheat, and on the thin side. I was pleased to have them as a vehicle for my baba ghanoush. The gyro was delicious, wrapped in a similar thin wrap. It was very flavorful and didn't taste over cooked or like it had been under a warming light for a long time. It was topped with a yogurt sauce and I added their spicy sauce. If you like spicy, be sure to give this a try! It is a great combination of spices and meets its purpose of adding tasty oomph well! On the plate is a salad of greens, cucumbers, and tomatoes in a light vinaigrette type dressing. The wrap is a great meal choice! It's plenty of food as is and is less expensive than the plate. The plate includes the same and adds rice. I wasn't in the mood for rice and had opted for the baba on the side, so this was a great choice for me. My wife selected the stuffed falafel plate. The plate comes with hummus, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, rice, pita bread and 3 falafel. With her first bite she said, I'm so used to falafel being dry and they aren't dry at all. They sure weren't! They are stuffed with sesame, green onion and sumac and each coated with a sauce. They are flavorful inside down to the middle, no dryness anywhere. She did get the rice, which had additions of peas, corns and green onions. We opted for dessert as well, a piece of Turkish delight and baklava. We were to full to have it there but are excited to take it home and try it when we are ready. I am sure it will pretty darn amazing.

Chicken Shawarma Plate
Starry S.

I usually have a weekly craving of chicken shawarma-- it was one of those days where I was in need for a solid plate, and it was my first time at King of Kabob. The chicken shawarma plate was phenomenal! It was so flavor & topped with such a yummy sauce on top. They also had some of my favorite rice I've ever had paired with the chicken, it had peas and caramelized onions which heightened the overall plate a bunch. It also came with a delicious salad, amazing hummus, and some pita bread! I also ordered a side of fries which didn't disappoint. This is going to be one of my go tos for a plate. The workers are also so helpful, quick, and kind. They have a little patio seating outside for you to enjoy your food as well :) I look forward to returning, thank you so much! :)

I discovered "Cal Gyros Mediterranean Cuisine" on Uber Eats. My wife and I were in North Oakland,…read morenear Berkeley, and wanted food delivered for a late-night dinner. Cal Gyros was featured near the top of the app, under the section "Healthy options to explore," based on our location and what was open at the time (a Thursday at 10:09pm). We were hungry and the menu and pictures of the food looked good enough to me. I ordered the following for us (descriptions from menu): * Lamb and Beef Gyros Sandwich ($14.95) - slow-cooked, thin-sliced, marinated lamb and beef gyros * Chicken Gyros Sandwich ($14.95) - slow-cooked, thin-sliced, marinated chicken * Cacik Appetizer ($8.95) - homemade yogurt with diced cucumbers, oregano, fresh dill and a hint of garlic After the cost of food ($38.85), I paid a $6.97 service fee, $3.99 tax, $2.00 for California driver benefits, and a $7.62 tip. The $0.99 delivery fee was waived because of a promotion. The total cost was $59.43. Roughly a third of that was due to Uber Eats. There were multiple delays. It took about an hour for the food to be delivered. To get to us from Cal Gyros was an 11-minute drive under usual traffic. I think the delay was with the restaurant and not caused by the driver because I saw the driver had to wait at the restaurant for an extended period of time. I know the driver has nothing to do with Cal Gyros, the business, but I just want to mention here that he (Axel) was super nice when handing off the order to me outside. As for the food itself, it was disappointing. The sandwiches (wraps) were filling, but that was about it. The quality of the ingredients wasn't great, especially the pita. The pita for the wraps was thin, hard, and bland. At least they were grilled. The cacik also came with pita. There were five, maybe six, Kronos-brand pita triangles in a Kronos bag. I think that pita may have been grilled too; it was hard for me to tell. The lamb, beef, and chicken gyros were flavorful enough, but they were far from the best gyros I've had from many similar hole-in-the-wall joints over the years. The Chicken Gyros Sandwich was very watery and messy to eat. The Lamb and Beef Gyros Sandwich was definitely the better of the two. I don't remember the other ingredients inside the wraps except for lettuce and perhaps onion and tomato. The cacik was fine. Cacik is the Turkish version of Greek tzatziki. Cal Gyro's cacik was cold, creamy, and refreshing. It was noticeably stronger tasting and more sour than tzatziki. Cal Gyros is located at Durant Center, colloquially referred to as the "Asian Ghetto," just south of UC Berkeley's main campus and surrounded by many of the school's buildings. It's one of several small restaurants, most of which are Asian, located in a U-shaped building with communal outdoor picnic-table seating in the middle. Some of the restaurants have their own dedicated seating inside, including Cal Gyros. The storefront sign says: "Best California Gyros." This place is open until 2am daily, so that's a plus.

My stomach started hurting after eating it so I couldn't even finish the food I ordered. This is probably the worst restaurant I've tried in Berkeley so far. For how long I waited, the food doesn't match the time it took to make the food. It definitely wasn't worth $15. The lady was gracious enough to offer free salad as compensation for the long wait, but the wilted salad looked unappealing. I was worried that the salad would make me even more sick so I didn't touch it. For a restaurant charging $15 for a meal, it should at least be safe to eat. I'm very disappointed and definitely won't be coming back.

Nice that the falafels crispy but not too greasy.
