Divan Restaurant Fourth Street Berkeley

Divan is like experience the taste, sounds, atmosphere of Istanbul one of our favorite places in the world! Our extremely kind and helpful server Ati was magical with his recommendations, attentive smile and professionalism! BRAVO! Our chicken kabas, eggplant and heirloom tomatoes were fresh, delicious looking and tasting! We love Divan!

Came here for an early girls dinner at the last minute and we must say, this place far met our expectations! Not only were the food out of this world but the service was beyond exceptional! We went with their recommendations and everything was amazing! * Turkish Spiced Fries: they were crispy with a hint of spice and the subtle sauce it came with was a great combination! * Beef Kababs: 20/10! The beef was so tender and flavorful, and the rice paired with it so great! If I had to recommend one dish from their menu, this would be it! * Wild Mushroom flatbread: definitely tasted like a pizza. It had mushrooms, bell peppers, onions and a marinara sauce. * Mezze Trio: a must have starter! I personally don't care for Hummus but theirs was so good, I wanted to take it home! * Shishito Peppers: also delicious and I loved that it was topped with slightly fried onions. The desserts (we tried them all!) * poached pear: this was a huge surprise! The moment you take a bite, it instantly takes you to Thanksgiving! It had a hint of apple and it was such a feel good/homey dessert. * Baklava: didn't really stand out from others for me but nonetheless, it tasted amazing! * Sutlac: OK, this was the one for me!! It was my favorite of all! It had sprinkles of hazelnut and reminded me of a Ferraro Rocher... so GOOD!! Our servers were absolutely amazing and attentive! For starters, they helped us decide on selections when we were stuck and they did not disappoint! Secondly, we ordered quite a few things and had a small table so they waited until we were done with some of dishes before clearing and bringing out the others. They were so friendly and tried to get to know us.

A gorgeous space in the same corner as the plant shop and Peets coffee. Very gracious, friendly staff and excellent service. They were very attentive but not overly pushy. We ordered the Mezze Trio and the sesame bread that came with it was still warm and crisp from their oven. We loved the red roasted bell pepper spread the most. I love hummus and theirs was good, but a bit lacking in flavor compared to others I've had before. The pistachio cheese one was very flavorful, but had a strong cheese flavor to it. We still enjoyed it immensely. We also ordered the Wild Mushroom Pide (flatbread with cheese, bell peppers and mushrooms), the spiced fries and the beef kebab plate. Everything was so yummy. The beef kebab and rice were spectacular. Full of delicious spices and cooked to perfection. The meat was so tender and the rice was nothing I ever had before. It had pine nuts, squash and herbs and had a very fragrant star anise flavor to it? I was trying to deconstruct it to see how they made it. It was truly a great accompaniment to the beef. The most kind gesture was they brought out hot Turkish tea and baklava for us. The tea was a great pairing to their sweets. You don't really need to add sugar at all. Their baklava is made in house and the highest compliment I can give as an Asian auntie was that it was not cloyingly sweet as other baklava I've had where it sits in honey syrup. I loved it. It was perfectly sweet with slightly sweetened whipped cream on top with pistachios. Although we were stuffed, we cleaned the dessert plate clean. I'm so happy that they're here at 4th street. A great addition to the diverse food options on 4th and are on the Resy app. They had a nice range of (m/c)ocktails and mimosas so this would be a great place for brunch.

Amazing! Food was spectacular, lamb chops were done to perfection, and our servers Serhat and Furkan were warm and helpful and very generous. Highly recommend!

Amazing food, outstanding service, and a beautiful atmosphere! Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive, making us feel right at home. You can tell a lot of care and passion goes into every detail. Highly recommend, and we'll definitely be back!

FIRST DAY! Soft opening. I just happened to luck out and walk by and discover it. Beautiful decor, delicious "Modern Turkish Cuisine", outstanding service, extremely friendly staff. The stuffed grape leaves and chicken kebab were excellent, as was the smoked lavender whiskeycocktail, but the rice pudding dessert -- which the server was nice enough to comp me on because I was their last customer on their 1st day -- was incredible! He said all their desserts are made fresh daily in house.

Baklava

Amazing atmosphere. The restaurant is beautiful, the service is exceptional. Even as a soft opening, they killed it on every front. I ordered the Turkish plate for two. It came with freshly baked sesame bread, our first batch was soft and delicious but was a bit cold and seemed like it had been sitting out for a bit. Our second batch, on the other hand, was warm and crispy on the outside with a perfect toast and fluffy on the inside. The platter included and red pepper walnut dip, which was umami and delectable. Turkish feta was also present, which was softer than the Greek or Israeli feta and has more of a sharp cheddar flavor. There were dried apricots and nuts which were yummy and simple. Clotted cream and honey was a classic but delicious combo that paired beautifully with the Turkish feta. The strawberry preserve was again classic but well done. The marinated olives were perfectly tangy and savory. Finally, a cucumber, tomato, and bell pepper salad was placed in the middle. For my taste it was a bit plain. I would have preferred more seasoning or tang in the dressing, but with all the other strong flavors it wasn't harming the dish. With the Turkish breakfast we decided to opt for the çilbir, which is a poached egg in a garlic yogurt sauce with a tomato chile oil on top. This was absolutely delicious, no notes. The yogurt and oil were so flavorful and the eggs were poached to perfection. I will admit that this dish, despite feeding two, was on the pricier side. However, it was also the most expensive item on the menu so I don't think that speaks to the affordability of the restaurant overall. We also ordered a side of Brussel sprouts which were probably the best I've ever had. They were perfectly crisp and not at all bitter, topped with oils and some sort of tomato sauce and crispy bits of deliciousness. The service at Divan was probably the highlight. When we asked for extra bread to pick up all of the delicious sauces we were given a fresh basket without hesitation. When we looked at the dessert menu and decided not to get the baklava, we were surprised with a walnut baklava on the house! The baklava was nice and syrupy with a good mouthful of walnuts inside. Honestly I would have preferred more layers of filo in the ratio to nuts, but who am I to complain about a free dessert! I want to come back here ASAP and try all of the items, not to mention the excitement I feel for their soon to come dinner menu. I definitely recommend this place. So good!

This was a good bread, round and splittable like a pita, served hot from the oven and sprinkled with some seeds (I think sesame, although I didn't pay close attention). 2. Meze Trio: patlican ezme (roasted eggplant, bell peppers), haydari (garlic yogurt dip with mint and dill), girit (ezine cheese with pistachios, oregano, olive oil). Loved the eggplant--tender and tasty! The yogurt dip was good, but I couldn't eat large amounts of it. The cheese was ok, a bit too heavy for us. 3. Ahtapot (grilled octopus on lime mashed potatoes and paprika butter). I didn't eat this, but the kids liked it. The octopus seemed very tender, and the potatoes were good. 4. Roka (arugula, diced cooked beets instead of tomatoes, honey mustard). Good, but the creamy dressing made it feel a little heavy after a while. 5. Mercimekli imambayildi (lentils-stuffed roasted eggplant). Imam bayildi translates as "the imam fainted" (because the dish is so delicious, maybe?). This was excellent. The eggplant had a wonderful smokey, roasted flavor. The lentils were good. There was a garlic yogurt moat around the eggplant. 6. Kunefe (shredded filo, melted cheese center, syrup, pistachios, scoop of Maras ice cream). Very good, maybe a bit too much for the three of us, maybe better if split four ways. Located on the corner of San Carlos and El Camino. Street and lot parking nearby.

The quality of the ingredients really stood out, and each dish was packed with flavor. It was a great addition to the meal and made the experience feel even more special. As fans of Pera Mezze House in Roseville, we were excited to learn that Meyhouse shares the same ownership, and the same attention to quality and hospitality definitely shines through. I was put in charge of finding a group lunch spot (a responsibility I do not take lightly), and…read moreafter a bit of digging, landed on Meyhouse on Emerson in Palo Alto. As someone who likes Turkish food, this felt like a strong contender. Food: We started with the lahmacun which is made up of a thin Turkish flatbread topped with ground beef, tomato, onion, pepper, and garlic. It was beautifully thin and crispy, with just the right amount of topping. Honestly, add a small salad and you've got the kind of lunch that makes you feel satisfied. This lahmacun is one of the better versions I've had which made it extra tragic to learn it's a lunch-only situation. Why gatekeep happiness to daytime hours? For my entree, I ordered the Alinazik which was grilled tenderloin skewers over eggplant labneh. The beef was tender and the labneh was creamy, savory and a tad smoky. I saw that they offer a $44.95 prix fixe menu, which sounds great in theory, except for the small catch that everyone at the table has to commit. A bit of a "we ride together, we prix fixe together" situation which may not work depending on your dining companion(s) dietary restrictions. Atmosphere: The space is bright, airy, and stylish. The high ceilings resulted in lots of natural light, and a large bar that quietly suggests, "you could have a cocktail or two." One slightly odd note: The bathroom lighting is very dim. Like... "is this ambiance or did someone forget a switch?" kind of dim. Not a dealbreaker, just a curious contrast to the otherwise well-lit space. Overall: A solid pick for Turkish food in Palo Alto located off Emerson and a successful group lunch choice (I will be taking full credit). I'd happily come back to explore more of the menu. I'm already eyeing the Pirzola (bone-in lamb chops) or the Filet of Levrek (branzino) and maybe lobby for all-day lahmacun.

I wish they gave more than 5 pieces in the order though.. next time we'll just order two. The kopoglu was pretty good too and paired very nicely with their house made bread, which btw is perfectly fluffy and amazing for dipping. For the main I had the Adana kebap which was amazing and the highlight of the meal for me! Everything from the meat to the veggies down to the rice was incredibly well seasoned. The lamb was tender and very juicy. BF ordered Çemenli tavuk which was also super tasty. It had this great smoky flavor and very tender too. We were excited to take the leftovers home. Monday nights during pandemic times brought (according to the SF Chronicle) hospitality workers to…read moreKitchen Istanbul en masse. It wasn't just the food they say, but the remarkable wine list, which turned the place into a see-and-be-seen spot akin to NYC's Elaine's (RIP). If this isn't quite how you imagine anyplace along SF's Clement Street, think again. Years later it's still packed (on a Friday night) and loud. Service was the sole miscue on my visit with 3 others. We were given menus and water but ignored after that, to a point where we reached out to get some wine and attention. As you can see from the 5-star assessment, no harm-no foul; once wine and food flowed all was forgiven. The menu required some explanation. It's not broken down in any discernible way, requiring the server to explain that all dishes ae meant to be shared and that the first several dishes are dips, then small plates, then larger. In truth, all seemed like small plates to me (or small servings) but if your wallet permits, you'll not be disappointed. There wasn't one thing we shared that we didn't 100% consume nor anything I'd not recommend. Since we sampled almost the entire menu I feel comfortable saying that everything is delicious and attractively presented. We left the alcohol order to the one at our table who'd chosen Kitchen Istanbul and she summoned the sommelier and gave him free reign. He asked what we like (hearty reds) and what we wished to spend (about $75/bottle) and we enjoyed 2 completely unique offerings that we'd not have known to choose for ourselves. He was also tasked with pairing two of the dessert wines with two of the chosen desserts and they were as enjoyable as the wines served with dinner. It's fair to say that the sommelier had fun with our table, stopping by before we left to say how much he'd appreciated the opportunity to choose for us and for us placing our trust in him. Like the rest of the City I was following Sam Smith's food journey during his time here. He never made it to Kitchen Istanbul but if he had, I think he'd have nodded in agreement with the 5-star rating.

I understand restaurants can get busy, and being out of a few menu items happens, but the way things were handled was frustrating. We ordered our food, received appetizers, and then nearly 20 minutes later our server casually came over to tell us they were out of the chicken entrée we had ordered. There was no apology, no empathy, and honestly no sense that she understood how inconvenient that was. By that point it was already late, and at almost 10 PM in San Francisco there weren't many other dining options open nearby, which completely ruined our night. What made it worse was that we were still charged despite the poor experience and lack of proper service recovery. I ended up not tipping because the service felt disorganized and lacking basic professionalism and empathy. To be fair, the owner did come out afterward to apologize while I was waiting for my Uber, and I appreciated that gesture. But overall, this was a terrible experience that could have been handled much better operationally and from a customer service standpoint.

Then another family of five, who also appeared to be the same race as the owner, came in about 10-15 minutes after us and received their food well before we did. I don't know why our order kept getting pushed behind everyone else's, and I can't say that race was the reason. I can only describe what I personally observed. Being passed over while multiple parties who arrived later were served first made us feel overlooked and unwelcome. We waiting about 30 mins for one plate of food that my son and I shared.
