I had some concerns about one of the staff members which I alluded to in my prior review. I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from management (Dana) who was very concerned and wanted to understand what happened to ensure it didn't happen again. I would strongly caution anyone considering King Street Rehab and Nursing Center for a loved one. My mother was admitted for subacute rehab after a stroke, and what we experienced was beyond unacceptable. On a daily basis, she was dressed in other residents' clothing. Call bells would go unanswered for over an hour. I spoke with the Director of Nursing repeatedly and was reassured things would improve, but they only got worse. Because she was left sitting in urine and feces for extended periods of time, she developed a severe UTI. Instead of addressing the neglect, they actually stopped giving her a necessary liver medication because it caused bowel movements and they didn't want to deal with changing her. That decision alone speaks volumes. Patients are routinely left sitting in wheelchairs in the hallway for long periods, with little to no engagement, like they are being warehoused. I personally witnessed a nurse handling a patient improperly. When I addressed it, she became defensive and nasty, and when I escalated it to her supervisor, there was no concern or accountability. I spent hours there every day because I did not feel comfortable leaving my mother alone. I had to bring her food because the facility's food is poor quality. At one point, they even told my mother she should not participate in recreational activities because she might feel embarrassed after her stroke, which is incredibly disheartening and inappropriate. The most alarming moment was when I walked in one Saturday morning and found my mother alone in her room, actively choking, with no staff around. I had to run out and find help myself. She also had significant bruising on her hands that was not explained. We documented everything and filed formal complaints. On the surface, the facility looks clean and modern when you walk in. But what happens behind the scenes, especially when family is not present, is deeply concerning. If you care about your loved one's safety, dignity, and proper care, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. read more

Unfortunately I experienced a nasty occurrences while visiting my cousin, with Nurse Arnold Marcia. She was extremely rude and disrespectful. I personally witnessed her screaming at a CNA while on duty, which was very uncomfortable and unprofessional to observe. The way she spoke to staff was inappropriate and unacceptable in a healthcare setting. From what I heard, her behavior also appeared to be sexist and homophobic toward a young male CNA. This kind of conduct creates a hostile work environment and should be taken seriously. I believe her behavior and communication with staff need to be reviewed by management. The cna took care of my cousin and he was amazing. I feel bad for what he had went through. read more

My husband was placed at King Street Rehab from the hospital. Its a nightmare, my husband got very sick here. The staff barely answer the call bells, no one ever knows what's going on with his care, and when I tried to get answers they ignore you. Awful Stay clear. read more

Our experience with King Street Rehab has been, by far, the most exceptional patient care journey we could have ever imagined for my mom. She was gravely ill, in and out of the hospital four times before the incredible team at Yale finally pinpointed her diagnosis. At one point, she had lost mobility from the hips down and faced months of intensive rehabilitation to relearn how to sit, stand, and more. It was a daunting process, but thanks to the unwavering dedication of King Street Rehab's staff, her remarkable recovery became possible. Just this week, I called the team to share an update on her progress. Without their expert care, attentive staff, and even the quality of their excellent meals, I truly believe her recovery would not have been as successful as it was. They not only restored her health but also her confidence. Even now, from her home in Waterbury, CT (60 miles away), she continues to speak fondly of the extraordinary care and kindness she received. My mom was accepted there after three weeks in the hospital. It is a beautiful place very clean and inviting unfortunately after two days of being there, she got pneumonia again not as bad after one week of being in the hospital on antibiotic she was going to go back, which they told her that she was welcome to come back, but on the day that she was being released from the hospital, they denied her access back into the place. I went to see the head of admissions and she told me that she could not accept my mother back this was very disheartening and a terrible thing to do. Great care was taken not only for my dad who was a long term patient of King Street, but also of our family who loved him and gained a great deal of support from the care team. My husband has had many times in the last few years where he needs intense PT. Most of the times he has been in a facility it has been King St. I cant say enough good things about this beautiful rehab facility. The staff is friendly , caring and knows every patients needs. Family feels welcome and part of treatment. Their Physical Therapy is wonderful. 7 days a week which is not so in other facilities. The food is well thought out, tasty and plenty. The dietitian addresses each patients needs. The building is immaculate with beautiful exotic birds as part of the ambience. Also a beautiful koy Pond. I recommend King St completely. read more

This place is rather strange. Very clean and attractive. However, the lack of coordinated communication and their ability to respond to or address patients individualized needs makes it feel like there's a tremendous lack of management or organizational competence. It's very unclear who to talk to to get anything done and once you are admitted almost no outreach. They are, however, very organized in sending you their bill which they expect be paid the moment it's drafted but as for patient care, they function in a silo with almost no ability to adapt to or consider individual limitations or extenuating complications. The food is always cold and of rather poor quality. Most of the staff is good enough and their are some gems here but enough staff don't seem happy. The setting is lovely, meticulously clean and grounds are spotless. Better than a hospital but really they are missing the chance, reputationally, to be the Burke of sub acute care. They just need to bring in a fabulous Chief of Staff to bring this place to the level it could/should be. I hope they get there. Goodness knows the real estate must be worth a fortune! read more

I don't understand the 2 prior reviews. My mom was there for short term rehab. They rolled out the red carpet for her. They got her to PT 2 times daily. Her bed was cleaned daily with all new sheets. When she called for them, they responded in minutes. The place is spotless. Floor shines, everything cleaned constantly. People are all about the patient. Very friendly with smiles all around. My only comment sthat they need to be clearer on What will be done, in laymen's terms. Mid-communication can be a terrible thing. Mom is back and they couldn't be treating her any better. My father entered into King Street rehab in August 2020 during the pandemic. Even though settling in was a little bumpy (it's difficult when you can't be physically present due to Covid) his short term stay was pleasant. His room had a large window to where we can visit and see him. Their Covid protocols are above board. He was able to work closely with a nutritionist and his rehabilitation was on point. My family is extremely happy with the services and care that was provided. read more

Caroline, the director of admissions is racist and rude! Because I am a black woman she claimed that I threatened her! I am a professional working woman. I have been in healthcare for 15yrs. I would never and have never threatened anyone in my life. But because I questioned the things she said to me because they did not add up she claims I threatened her. Shocker! I was looking for a rehab facility for my grandfather at the beginning of January. My daily and I went to Kins Street rehab facility and toured it with Christina. At the time Christina was great! She showed us around and introduced us to the staff. We told her the insurance my grandfather had and she said the accepted it. At the end of the visit she said I really hope you bring your grandfather here. We were sold. The facility was lovely and the staff all seemed so amazing and friendly. We live in Throggs neck in the Bronx and drive so the ride there was 20 minutes at best. Perfect place for grandpa so we thought. So we finally call back to make arrangements and now we get on the phone with Caroline. She begins to ask me where we(the family) live. I explained we live in Throggs Neck and Manhattan. She says "are we sure we want to put my grandfather there because it seems like we are too far away should anything happen". I was so confused. I explained to her that I am a licensed registered nurse and have worked in nursing/ rehab facilities before and I know that the families location is not criteria for accepting patients. She did not like that! Now she tells me they do not accept my grandfathers insurance (United) which is contradictory to what Christina told us. Then she said you guys will have to come out of pocket per night because the insurance would not cover it all. I said ok how much would that be? She said $125.00/ night. I said ok that's not a problem. My family will cover the $125.00 per night expense. She really didn't like that. She proceeded to tell me "well no I just don't think it's going to work out with your grandfather coming here." I was so confused. I asked why and she could not give me a definite answer. They accept his insurance (alothough she said they did not) and we are willing to pay the $125 per night. So what is the reason why you will not accept him? She could not give me an answer. At this point she is very excited and speaking loudly and very erratic and it sounds like she is taking things pretty personal because I am asking questions that challenge what she is telling me. She did not like that. I asked to speak to a manager. She tells me she is the manager. I ask to speak to her boss because everyone has a boss right?And she tells me that the boss is out of office at the time. And then she tells me "if you think you are going to threaten me you have another thing coming." No threats were made! Not one! There was no need to threaten anyone. However at this point I think she knows that I am an African American woman and she was now trying to play the victim card and say that I threatened her. Shocking! I am a professional and would never and have never threatened anyone in my life. At this point she says your grandfather cannot come here and hangs up the phone on me. I have never experienced anything like this. Especially coming from a nursing facility where the staff is supposed to be caring and empathetic towards what we as a family are experiencing having a loved one who needs help. She was the exact opposite of that. She was having a bad day and took it out on me. I feel like my family and I were racially profiled by her. At this time no one has returned my call from the administration to address my concerns. Needless to say my grandfather would never go there now. But I feel like this was so completely out of line and needs to be addressed. She should not be working there if she cannot keep her emotions in check. read more

We want to sincerely thank Sheila Wilner, Christina Burke, Renee and EVERY doctor and nurse for the compassionate and excellent professional care that my brother received from Day 1. The entire team at King Street Rehab is truly outstanding. They've seen it all and KNOW it all. They understand what the patient needs and what the family needs as well. My wife, Debi is a Psychiatric Social Worker, with an MSW and specialty in geriatrics, so she knows a thing or 2 about nursing homes. If your family is facing a situation where a loved one can no longer take care of their daily needs, we highly recommend King Street Rehab as a solution and I'm happy to chat further with anyone who would like more details. The place is a house of horrors. They keep staff at a minimum. Hands on staff overworked and therefore patients aren't treated with dignity. Middle management hide from family advocates. Their claim to fame is that they are family owned so they keep an eye on staff. Family hides in their ivory tower wing and are protected from speaking to family. Believe me, we have tried. So glad that I was able to spring my mom before this epidemic. I couldn't imagine not being there to try and protect my mother. They spend more time cleaning out parrot cages than caring for patients. read more

My Mom was in King Street Rehab for almost three weeks recently. I thought she received excellent care from a caring staff. The place is spotlessly clean, the staff are responsive, they worked seamlessly with the assisted living place to which my Mom moved to ease the transition, and were ever available to me with any questions I had. I was impressed by the staff actions the board, from the front door, to the nursing staff, to the rehab folks and all the way to the kitchen, but special mention to Colleen Martin, Rehab director, and Dee Adams, the social worker, who were impressive professionals in every respect. read more

We had an excellent experience here. My mother broke her leg and just returned from a month at King Street Rehab. I don't have enough good words to say about this facility. The nurses were so attentive and passionate. The OT and PT was spot on - caring and gentle, yet pushing her to perform. I was well informed throughout her stay and I was always welcome. This is THE place for your elderly parent to rehab from their injuries. I would give this a 6 star if there was this option. Thank you King Street Rehab. read more

This letter is an expression of dissatisfaction and concern for current and future patients and their families specifically regarding the Rehab Director, Colleen Martin and Social Worker, Dee Adams. The nursing care was satisfactory and unremarkable. However, any encounters with the staff members mentioned above were disappointing. I was surprised by their lack of compassion and their attitudes were contrary to your mission statement and supposed level of service. "dedicated staff who collectively embrace our culture of trust, shared values, and real time communication. Through teamwork, we deliver a higher standard of patient care that is individualized and responsive to their needs. From check in to discharge, our doctors, nurses, and staff work closely with your family to prioritize your safety, progress, and health. We focus on individualized care, not institutionalized care." NOT SO! They should not to be trusted alone with patients and their families. They were not helpful to develop a viable care plan for my husband. They were pushing the idea of my taking him home under 24-hour care as private pay. When these people need to be most helpful and compassionate, they are the least. Therefore, I would never recommend this facility to anyone in the community. I will be posting online as well read more

King Street is a glorified nursing home. Don't be fooled by the name. It's a place to rot for however many weeks you go there. NO ONE comes to help you at night. You can ring and call out for hours. They say be right there and NEVER come till shift change at 7AM. They offer PT a 1/2 hour a day and on several days they forget. Once again they say they will be right back for you and never come. If you love your patient don't send them there. I promise it's a horror from 11 PM till 7AM when you need someone most. read more

Heard good reviews and wanted my mom to be admitted to this beautiful facility. It's located on sprawling property, interesting birds flying in the corridors, spotless facility and a caring staff until after a couple of weeks. I was lulled to sleep by its appealing aesthetics. Staff works in complete silos. Management is weak. Communication is essential in a rehab facility. PT, Dietitian, Nurse and care takers need to meet and be on the same page. As a result, 3 weeks in, mom had not eaten since she arrived, developed Stage 3 bed sore and staff was completely unaware. Once revealed by me, they attempted to undue their poor care. This became a nursing/rehab nightmare. Soon after, she was admitted to the hospital with severe dehydration and a stage 3 bed soar. How could this happen? Due to the increased level of care, she could not return to her residence. Since then she has deteriorated and this experience has taken away possible years but definitely quality of life from her. Perhaps if this was detected earlier, we may have had a different outcome. This place has been around for a while. Not sure how long management has been in place. As a result of this episode i hope owners change management and follow the blueprint of responsibility for their patience. If you are young and need PT, this could work for you. Picking a rehab facility for a parent can be quite alarming and frustrating. I walked into King Street Rehab three weeks ago not knowing what to expect. I was beyond pleased with the immediate attention I received and the tour I was given. My mind was at ease, especially since the facilities I viewed previously were substandard. King Street Rehab is a bright cheerful facility. It is an immaculate and safe environment. Every employee was courteous and constantly concerned about my dad's well being as well as his family. He received PT and OT daily and was gently encouraged along the way. They accommodated his dietary needs very well with a selection of food he would want to eat.The nurses and aides were compassionate and knowledgeable. I personally think that the main objective in care is treating people with respect and allowing the patient to maintain their dignity. King Street Rehab did just that. We are thankful to the staff of kind, sincere people who take their job of serving others to the max. Ralph and family read more

Please save your loved ones the horrible experience. Mr father was released from the hospital to King Street for rehab. He was very sleepy and somewhat out of it. Within two days they had determined that it was not possible to rehab him. They strongly recommended that he be moved to comfort care, which is their version of hospice. The cost is $500/day private pay. During his two or three days in the rehab area they didn't even go so far as to try range of motion exercises. I mean, they do that for coma patients! They also said that they couldn't give him any food or water because their speech therapist said he couldn't swallow. Um one week before the hospital said his swallowing was fine. They were concerned that he would get pneumonia. If someone doesn't drink for three days, and are already old and sick, they will die! Who the hell cares about pneumonia at that point. Let them drink! To add insult to injury, when we arranged for him to be transferred home, not yet sure of the date, they emailed an invoice. The very next day, I received a call checking on payment! He hadn't even left yet! The billing manager, Ellen Ginsburg said that they required payment before discharge. I said I would pay once he was discharged and she pressed about payment. I offered to pay by credit card over the phone and she said they didn't want to have to pay a fee! Excuse my language but WTF!!! I offered to leave my office and drive over a check which seemed to be what she wanted. Thankfully she said that wasn't necessary. They should focus more on their patient care and less on the payment. Disgusted! read more
