I have been going to this restaurant for years ! In the last year? Something changed the food is no longer tasty the fried rice is no longer tasty ! Even the fried dumplings are limp. It does not seem to matter what dish is ordered it's just disappointing. Also the service has gotten strange ! This last time whomever was training the young lady behind the cash register was a nasty loud and disrespectful person . With so many restaurants loosening their restrictions, we were surprised to find King's Chef buttoned up as if the Black Plague raged outside. Only 1-2 people can get inside the vestibule to find out if their order is ready. If not and there are others waiting, you step outside and wait or go to your car and just keep popping in to check. They do not call you to tell you your order is ready - which would have been a better way to handle it. A very young boy was dealing with customers that day and I suspect he was the one that took our order over the phone (very abrupt and rude). We were not given an estimated time when I order would be ready - he simply hung up on us - so we left home right away and ended up waiting another 10 minutes when we arrived. The area where seating used to be is now where they store stuff and is a huge mess. Not an appealing sight. After we got our order and got home, I received a call from the restaurant. I did not recognize the number so I didn't answer, but they left a message. The young boy manning the phone and dealing with customers left us a message telling us that I probably got someone else's crab lo mein instead of the vegetable lo mein I ordered and I was TO BRING IT BACK. What? Bring the food back if I had gotten the wrong lo mein? The place is buttoned up like Fort Knox against any contact with the outside world and I am supposed to BRING FOOD BACK? That is seriously messed up. Until they start receiving customers inside AND they have an adult taking orders and dealing with customers, we won't be back and maybe not even then. Stopped in around 5:45 on a Sunday evening. We decided to eat in rather than carry out since most Chinese food is best when served fresh. This was definitely the case. The restaurant is quite small with only 6 tables for those that decide to dine in. The entire time we were there they did a very brisk takeout business. At times the line was 6 deep with people waiting to order or pick up their called-in order. The amount of business they were doing was a good sign that the food was good. I ordered General Tso's Chicken combination dinner. The combination dinners include an chicken egg roll and chicken fried rice. I asked for my dish to be extra spicy and they happily made the adjustment. My wife ordered Szechuan Chicken as a combination dinner. The egg roll was hot and crunchy with excellent seasoning in the filling. Both dinners arrived within about 15 minutes and the small wait was definitely worth it. The General Tso's Chicken was sweet with a nice hot punch, just the right amount for me. The breading was still nice and crunchy under the sauce - a big advantage to eating there, rather than take out. The Szechuan Chicken chicken had great Szechuan pepper flavor in a traditional Szechuan brown sauce. The chicken fried rice was delightful. Well seasoned and generous amounts of steamed chicken throughout. The place is small and in a strip mall, but the food was excellent and well prepared. I've carried out some good meals from here ordered from their very expansive menu. However, I very much recommend eating at one of the tables to experience how great it can be when it is fresh and hot. The atmosphere is typical small strip mall. read more

Our first time trying this place and it was very good. We both ordered the lunch specials and were pleasantly surprised with the portion size and the price. There isn't a lot of space in the restaurant but it seemed that most people order for carry out. The food was very good & served hot & quick. Establishment is small but CLEAN. About 6 tables if you choose to dine in. There's a table next to the register with a hot water dispenser to make yourself some tea if you dine in. Definitely a plus. Ordered appetizers #15 Five Happiness(For 2): 2(Crab Rangoon, fried jumbo shrimp, chicken teriyaki, shrimp toast, spring roll).... As far as we are concerned everything had to have been frozen. Fried and very mushy. Crab Rangoon was good, everything else I wouldn't ever "try" to eat again. My wife ordered their beef chop suey; It wasn't the best she's had but definitely not the worst. Terrible Terrible Terrible Where do I begin . The rice was terrible . I mean how do you mess up white rice . The pepper steak had more onions and bell peppers in it then anything . I had about 7 pieces of what was suppose to be steak . The egg rolls taste like a garden of garbage . The sweet and sour chicken was suppose to come with fried rice . I THINK NOT . I am traveling from out of state on business. I rolled the dice on this choice for carry out. Their Covid precautions for pick up are like none I've ever seen...very precautious. The Moo Shu Pork had good flavor and the white rice was perfect. Hot and sour soup was not good. read more

I had heard nothing but good things about all the food at King Chef. So a friend and myself decided to try it out. The place is take out or dine in. No delivery. So i went there to place the order the staff was very friendly and helpful. We ordered the Happiness 5 (shrimp toast, crab rangoon, chicken teriyaki, deep fried shrimp and one more thing i do not recall), Pork Fried Rice, Shrimp Lo Mein, and Hunan seafood. The service was prompt but the food was subpar. It was mainly bland, not bad but not good either. The only excellent thing was the chicken teriyaki as it was not dry and a good portion. The pork fried rice tasted just like fried rice, and I could not finish the Hunan Seafood platter as it was not very tasty. Overall I would not recommend this to anyone as there has to be a better Chinese food place in town read more

My wife and I have been ordering food from here for the past 3 years or so. And no matter what we had tried before, they all turned out perfectly. The food and quality here is a cut above everyone else. The chef and his wife are lovely people, and both are always so friendly. Nowadays, my wife likes to order the garlic shrimp. That sauce is divine, and the dinner portion is what you want to get. King's Chef is our favorite restaurant in town period. King Chef in Fond du Lac The term is usually 3 strikes and you're out, but I'm going to give up after 2. My family and I ate here when it first opened and we were very disappointed. The food was extremely bland, so much so if I had closed my eyes I really couldn't have told you what I was eating. There didn't seem to be any seasoning used at all and the texture of the sauces was unpleasant - too coagulated. I don't really remember what we ordered, but my takeaway memory was we decided we weren't going to come here again. The most popular Chinese restaurant in town had food which was much, much better than this, but sometimes you just have to branch out to see what's going on in the restaurant biz. The years passed and it seemed as though the fair thing to do was to try King Chef again, which turned out to be a bigger disappointment, because I should have known better. The food was worse than bland. Again I couldn't have told you what I was eating. The chicken with mushrooms had a sweet sauce which had no other flavor other than sweet. I couldn't taste even any garlic. I've had that many times elsewhere and the sauce has never been sweet. I didn't try the chicken in black bean sauce, but I did have the sesame shrimp which has always been a favorite of mine elsewhere. The batter wasn't the crunchy cornstarch batter I have always liked; the coating on the shrimp was something strange that tasted almost like the shrimp had been dipped in pancake batter and then fried. Again, no taste to the sauce other than sweet. The previous reviewer who just raved about the food must not know what really good chinese food really tastes like or somehow this restaurant had a period of time between my 2 visits when the food was really better. I've had Chinese food all over WI, mainly Madison and Milwaukee and I've eaten it extensively in California and cooked it myself. I used to live on Grant Ave in San Francisco. My son went to a Chinese school in the neighborhood. We know good Chinese food and this isn't it. He also mentioned how busy the place was so this means it must be good. Sometimes that happens when a place has just opened. This time there were only 2 people in the place eating on a Saturday at dinner time. I don't mean to be so harsh, but I resent paying $ 40.00 for something I probably will give to my dogs. The attitude of the waitress/hostess wasn't friendly as well. Just that alone would make me vote with my feet. I might put up with attitude for really great food and I have, but not for this. There are lots of restaurants that make you feel welcome when you come in and order their food. I think I'll just go to one of them next time. read more

I've been coming here since they opened and nothing has ever changed, they still make the BEST Chinese food in central Wisconsin. My favorites are the wanton soup or their hot and sour soup, if I want something more filling I go for beef and mushroom, hunan beef, general tso, or the sesame chicken. The one thing I always have to get is their crab rangoon. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who has never been to itt yet you will never find anything more fresh and tasty for Chinese in the area. read more

Inedible! Went there last night after a long day and not wanting to cook. Ordered Curry Beef, fried rice and an egg roll. Got home sat down to eat and both the rice and the beef dish were inedible. I do not know what happened but I was the only customer there at 7:45 pm on Sunday and it appeared the were cleaning the kitchen. It took almost 20 minutes for my order (which I was actually ok with as I was hungry and want quality over speedy food) but I felt like something weird was going on when I realized in all of that time no one was cooking my food. You can see into the kitchen and there were two guys cleaning and a woman whom after 10 minutes came out of the bathroom and went behind the door to apparently prepare my food. I honestly think they microwaved the food. The beef was so slimy and disgusting and the crabmeat in the rice smelled bad. The eggroll was the only item I didn't throw away. My wife and I did not eat any of the meal and based upon the experience will never eat there again. read more
