So I couldn't wait to try KG after reading a bunch of great reviews and I have to say I was pretty disappointed. People made it out to be the best around and it def. wasn't. I will say the crab rangoons were excellent that is why I am giving it 3 stars. The fried rice was awful and the chicken fingers had no taste. The location was kind of in a bad spot. The prices were wayyyyyy to high to top it all off. $33 for 2 combos and an app, where at my favorite spot it comes to $24 and the quality is way better. This is truly a hidden restaurant... had a old school dinner feel to it. The bar was next to the front door. The decor is very unique. -=Service=- Service wasn't as prompt as expected. My glass of water was empty a few times and took a few reminders to fill up. The server wasn't rude nor were they polite, just dismissive. I didn't like it too much... I notice the other table had a bread basket... asian restaurant with a bread basket? really?! i mean really!? -=Food=- The dim sum was alright, nothing great. A bit over price (2.95). In chicago a local dim sum would be (1.75).... i'm just saying... my friends and i loaded up with dim sum. i guess their picture menu was helpful. I also had two entrees... the HK style steak ($16), ok, this was weird, but i think it tasted like something from denny's or ihop. wtf?! Of the four restaurants in RI that offer dim sum, this is the best of all of them in my mind. They have a wide selection of dim sum choices from the standard fare to the "exotic" and a good collection of pastries too. Their dim sum is made and cooked fresh on the order. The one dish I didn't think tasted like your typical Chinatown dim sum was the beef/shrimp rice noodle (ha cherng and ngaaw cherng) because they didn't taste like the typical Chinatown style. Now, this isn't to say that it wasn't good, but it was a different taste. Go for the pan fried noodles too. (You might want to skip on the wonton noodle soup because that was kind of bland). They also provide tea free of charge. Woohoo. You can't go wrong with this place. The decor is a little older, but there is plenty of seating for small or large groups. Price-wise, it is typical and on par for a dim sum restaurant outside of a Chinatown. read more

I never want to come back here. I was a regular here for 7 years. but today it ends. Everything is so different. The servers are rude and could careless when you need anything. They give you small glasses of water and you constantly need it refilled. They see you dying of dehydration and they just walk on. When you have like 6 plates to wrap to go they bring out a bunch of boxes for you to do yourself. Every time! It's not easy when you have a toddler who can't sit still. The food just isn't the same. It's old at times. Especially the dim sum. Silver crystal in Warwick it's 10x better than this place. From soup to meat to noodles to rice it's just such a difference. I have returned for dim sum on Father's Day with my friends. To my surprise the dim sum menu has changed a little with more variety, especially with more steam dim sum. One thing that holds me back from not coming to King's Garden for dim sum before was that most items were fried. So I was happy to see that things have changed. The food was great! We had several bakery items which I always crave, and all my friends who tried them first time liked it. One thing that I really like is that I finally find a restaurant in RI that can make decent "rice noodle", both fried and steamed. Rice noodle dim sum is difficult to make and it always is one of my benchmark for a good dim sum place and they nailed it. We also tried the Beef Tripe, which honestly I never want to try it in the States due to not trusting that it can be good here given the complexity and time investment of the dish, as well as the source of ingredient. My willingness to try gave me another pleasant surprise! The dish was flavorful and simply wonderful. They did it just right for the texture and flavor! We had a total of 7-8 dim sum and every single one is good!! This has become my new go-to dim sum place now! I am so glad to have such good quality and authentic Chinese food around. A diamond in the rough. After searching without success for good Chinese food in Providence, I was introduced to King's Garden by my aunt, who had heard of it through a former Brown lecturer. The moment I tasted the steamed gailan in garlic sauce I knew King's Garden was the real deal. Totally impressed by Kings Garden. I must have driven by here a hundred times, never would have stopped in, but then there's Yelp. Yelp and Yankee magazine that is. RI is full of just OK Chinese joints, and there's a heaping helping of really poor ones, lucky for me this one stands out. Loved the egg rolls, not chewy& soggy like the typical frozen roll, I can only guess that these are made fresh right here. The cabbage inside still has a bit of crunch, there is a fresh shrimp flavor, and a crispy shell. Nice. I had a dish just because of the way it looked on the website, there's a nice big photo of the Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup that scrolls by on the opening page. Turns out that I really enjoyed it, the blend of pork and shrimp in the dumplings was just right, and the bright ginger flavor in the broth really hit the right notes. The best, however, was the Orange Chicken. Looked like it was going to be too sweet and sticky, but it wasn't. The sweetness was there, but it didn't overpower the orange flavors, and the chicken was perfectly cooked. Not too shabby. I also had a combination plate as a starter, kind of like a PuPu Platter without the Sterno. The wings were cooked a bit over, and the sauce was too sweet for me, the ribs a bit fattier than I would like as well. But, I'm willing to overlook it, everything else was so good. So, I'm definitely a "stuck in my ways" sort of person. I don't eat a lot of Chinese Food, and I'm definitely used to it being a specific way (meaning how it was at the place I went as a child) The Hot and Sour soup was good, and I liked the pork fried rice (seriously, there was 2 pieces of pork in it...which i just picked out and enjoyed the onion and soy saucey goodness of the rice). The chow mein was.....a plate of celery, AND they placed the noodles on the bottom of the plate and dumped my chow mein over it so they were all soggy by the time i got my food delivered. They should have more of a description with some of the items, as I was a bit confused by what was what- no this is noodles, this is just meat and veggies etc....a little copy can go a long way in terms of satisfying people. Took forever and a day to get drinks. I really wasn't gonna flip if I didn't get my pineapple passion in the pineapple glass, I just wanted to get buzzy on NYE, and my drinks coming out after others put a damper on that. read more

The shrimp roll very oily and king tau spareribs chewy and mostly bones. I was there a few nights ago and noticed that the sticky sauce chicken wings were very very dry and the food did not stay hot for very long . Just visited again after a while. I think we hit them on an off night. The food was fantastic, but service was really slow. There were also 6 of us, and we all ate at different times. One entree came out, 10 minutes later another. I ordered 4 dim sum dishes, got 2 after everyone else was pretty much done, and then eventually cancelled the other 2; we were all ready to leave. Bar service was worse. The drinks came as sporadically as the food. It took over 30 minutes for my drink to arrive, actually it didn't, I eventually went to the bar and got it. It wasn't even busy. As I mentioned, the food was great. My wife got a walnut with prawns dish that I can't stop thinking about, and everyone at the table raved about their food. I think the service was a fluke. Our second time for lunch. It was fairly full on Saturday. We had hot tea served up right away..nice on such a cold day. Menus were brought and the wait began. We learned from our previous visit that things are leisurely here. Ordered two dim sum, wanton soups, and an order of moo shu shrimp to share. 4 pancakes are standard, we ordered 2 more for. $1. The soup was very good standard wonton soup with three dumplings as well as pork strips and cabbage leaf. Very good broth Then a very long wait for a serve up of the moo shu and one dim dum. Both knock your socks off good. The second dim sum came after we were finished eating for 10 minutes. If you like "American" style Chinese fare, this is the best and is a Rhode Island landmark. Best Chow Mein in state, wonderful old school style not the new fangled stuff with weird stuff in it that you get everywhere else or the Goop you find at buffets, the fresh kind with bean sprouts, celery onion and in my case Chicken. This is the stuff that Rhode Islanders are used to and they make very well. They even have chow mein sandwiches which I think is a RI only thing. For those who prefer more authentic Chinese try the Dim Sum menu. Food is fresh, hot and tasty. As I said earlier the Dim Sum Menu has more authentic Chinese style foods if that's what you like. My favorite things are probably the simplest things like Chicken Chow Mein, Egg Roll, Low Mein and Young Chow Fried Rice. My favorite of all is on the "dim sum" menu and it is the Shrimp Steamed Dumpling Soup, I always order to go so they give you the dumplings separate and broth in another container. There are 10 dumplings stuffed with shrimp and pork with shiitake mushroom in a delicious light broth with green onion and Chinese broccoli rabe as garnish. The dumplings hand made and are similar looking to Shumai but taste even better! I can only rate the food and take out service since I never ate inside, not that it doesn't look nice. Seems quite warm and cozy though, dimly lit with typical Chinese restaurant atmosphere. I just do take out probably 2-3 times a week and the service is fast and the order taker and cashiers are so nice, especially the cute chubby Chinese guy who speaks perfect English. Prices are very reasonable and your family will love it. I pretty much like everything on menu, the only thing I did not order over past 30 years, I think was the Chickens foot on the Dim Sum menu but it probably tastes great, I am just scared of feet on a plate. You know it must be good when you see lots of Chinese people going there...who better knows Chinese food then they do. That is how I learned about the Dim Sum from a Chinese friend who told me it was as good as home and better than anywhere else he'd been in America. I've been coming to this restaurant for well over 15 years (as it was my parents' favorite restaurant and we'd drive up from Westerly) but over the past few years we would only come sporadically when we were in the area. The food used to be great but the quality had slipped under the old management. A few months ago we noticed new faces at the front counter when we arrived. Our familiar waiter confirmed that the restaurant was under new management. We ordered our usual favorites and the food was fabulous! The dim sum was the best we've had in a very long time. It was fresh and piping hot. The new owner stopped by our table to say hello and was very warm and welcoming. I've been back about 6x in the past 2 months and have not been disappointed yet! We generally order from the thick white authentic chinese menu, not the regular americanized menu so I can't speak to how the new fried rice or chow mein compares to the old but I can say that King's Garden is back at the top of our favorite restaurant list!! read more

That's the last time we're going to King's Garden. We used to enjoy it a few years ago but no longer. We just had yet another horrible meal! UGH!!! The food is so bad we can't deal any more. Some of the food tastes spoiled. Other items were just poorly cooked. Then you add the disorganized, clueless wait staff and the not so clean looking setting (OMG- SEE HOW MANY DEPT OF HEALTH INSPECTION VIOLATIONS THEY HAVE ON-LINE) and it's just not worth it any more! The current owner used to be a server there and her and her husband took over the place, but you can tell they have absolutely no restaurant management experience and no clue! Servers are wandering around everywhere and getting little done. Our waitress took our order then we never saw her again! I had to constantly keep going up and asking for another fork, napkins, ask where our food was, etc, etc. I can honestly say it's one of the worst run restaurants I've ever seen. When we were leaving, there were people coming in and the male owner instead of being there to greet them, was sitting at the bar, with his back facing the door, staring at his texts- he didn't even see them as they just stood there waiting to be seated by him-- no clue whatsoever!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't understand how anyone can give this dump a good review? Maybe because there's no other Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood so this is all they've got??? Maybe they're holding onto memories of the place under past ownership? PS- My husband saw one of the cooks come out of the bathroom and not wash his hands and head back to the kitchen. Classic canton dim sum. Atmosphere is that of typical Chinese restaurant, that is to say minimal on decorations or why is that there, and why is it so dark. That being said if you want good dim sum this is place. From there translucent chive dumplings, to there Sichuan style beef tripe, to their radish cakes, everything tasted unique and was filled with the rich flavors that you come to expect at a good Chinese restaurant. read more

Kings Garden is our go-to Friday night Chinese food place. The wait staff can be inattentive and forgetful,the decor is dated and a bit cold, but the food is authentic and delicious! Don't go expecting anything more than a local take out joint and you won't be disappointed. What you get, however, is so much more. It's a little slice of Chinatown in Rhode Island. I spent a decade in Boston eating in Chinatown on a regular basis and I can tell you kings Garden is the real deal. Get the Dim Sum. Try the soup. Be adventurous and you will be rewarded. read more

I'm from San Francisco and enjoy dim sum on both the East and Best Coasts. While most New Englanders head to Boston or NYC Chinatowns, those who are in the middle can head to Cranston (just south of Providence off I-95) and eat at Kings Garden. The dim sum and items on the authentic menu are cash money! There's not enough business to sustain servers pushing the dim-sum carts but they make everything to order so the food is fresh and hot. The prices are very reasonable for what you get -- my favorite is the Har Gow (steamed shrimp dumplings). I dine at Kings Garden every time I see clients and colleagues in the Providence area. read more

Went to Kings Garden for dim sum today and had perhaps the most disappointing experience of my life. Arrived at 2pm and was promptly seated in a booth as it was not busy. My first impression of the restaurant is that it is very DATED. From the exterior to the interior, everything looked as if it came from the 70s. I was given a menu along with a dim sum checklist to order from. Was there for dim sum so I did not look at the other items on the menu. The dim sum menu itself contained a decent amount of items including all of the usual items. So I ordered the following items: 1). Pan fried stuffed peppers - it was greasy and served with a gloopy sauce and there was NO flavor 2). Shrimp dumpling (har gau). - NO flavor - frozen ones from the supermarket have more flavor 3). Pea pod and shrimp dumpling. - NO flavor 4). Shrimp and chive dumpling. - NO flavor 5). Rice wrap with beef. - NO flavor 6). Crystal dumpling (pork and taro inside). - NO flavor 7). Chicken feet. - not as bland as everything else 8). Coconut pudding. - decent flavor My basic summary of the food is that it was ALL BLAND. I don't know if was because of the time of day but basically nothing had taste. There was nothing off putting about the food other then it tasting like nothing. Service it self was fine. Great find! I have tried take out from this restaurant several times now and have never been disappointed. The chicken fried rice, my favorite, is very well done with plenty of chicken. The portion is huge! I make three meals from a large order. The wonton soup has several wontons and some pork in it. The broth is rich and flavorful. Prices are good and service is quick. We had dim sum here. It was definitely not as good as some of the places in Boston but pretty good for the area. The black bean tripe tasted good, though I wasn't expecting the giant hunks of beef liver in it which I had to pick around. I loved the chicken feet, cartilagey tasty goodness, the steamed shrimp dumplings were good, as was the sticky rice, and shu-mai. My husband seemed please with the steamed pork buns (I hate those no matter how well preparedso I have no comment on them.) Veggies were fresh, everything was hot and seemed to be made to order. Customer service was fantastic. I never had an empty water glass, our food came out quickly and was frequently asked how we were enjoying our lunch. The owner looks like he's running tight ship! I'll definitely be back to try their regular authentic Chinese dinner menu soon. The soups looked very tasty and they had some yummy looking unique items on there. I've only had the dim-sum here. It's a consistent and reliable spot to get your dim-sum fix where the waiters/waitresses are really nice and very fast. + I always order the dry stir fried beef noodles - good portion size. For those unfamiliar with this dish, be aware that your more-than-usual-servings of oil are used (rice noodles can be sticky so you need quite a bit of oil to stir fry it) + Free tea + The pork shui mai is tasty and there's enough fat to keep it moist + Sometimes they have it, but the fried cruller wrapped in rice noodle is pretty good; the cruller is always nice and crispy and the rice noodle is thin so you get a nice balance in texture - I've only ordered it once, but the baked char siu bao are tiny and there isn't much filling. Not sure if that's consistent. Worth trying - The deep fried ham sui gok was pretty bland tasting (another one that I only ordered once) read more

After the sad demise of Lucky Garden, this place has become my go-to for dim sum. In fact, I've only ever had dim sum here. Their menu has a decent variety and it's a good way to spend a Sunday morning with friends. The only downside is their bubble tea is a bit weird (texturally) and bland. I wouldn't recommend it. Also, they kindof skimp on the filling for the char siu bao. The taro & pork dumplings are deliciously rich, starchy, and covered in a crispy fried coating. I also enjoy the lotus leaf sticky rice (one of my favorite things anywhere) and the lava buns are to die for. The trick is to time exactly when you eat them so the molten custard filling is just right but hasn't cooled down enough to fully congeal. read more

Not great Chinese. Ordered the Shrimp with Garlic Sauce which was supposed to have carrots, mushrooms, baby corn, peppers, water chestnuts and bamboo shoots in a spicy garlic sauce. Instead, it was some overcooked slop with some decent shrimp, dominated by overcooked snow peas with one mushroom, a couple of carrot chunks, a few chunks of pepper and one or two corns. I frequent King's Garden, it's my local dim sum/ Chinese food restaurant. This is clean Chinese food. They do a nice job of preparing the food to not be over-cooked over-fried, or over thought. It's simple and has no reason to change. Dim Sum - pork bun, beef balls, crunchy/crispy noodle, Peking ravs, and pea pod dumplings. Yes I like to salivate over the traditional menu and often try new things but I can't seem to order without these delights rolling off my tongue... steamed pea pod leaf dumplings, sweet mashed lotus leaf bun, pan fried stuffed bean curd skin, a special order of pea pod greens and garlic sauce, poached ginger chicken, and one from the American menu (that I'm not embarrassed to throw out to you)... orange chicken. This orange chicken dish is pan fried and not deep fried, has real hunks of chicken and light breading, slices of spiced oranges and not a sickeningly sweet sauce. MMMM I'm lucky to live within 15 minutes of Kings but I'd surely make drive if I were further. Don't be afraid to ask for an authentic menu when you go! read more

Grew up eating at King's Garden but haven't been since we moved. Decided to give it a try after moving back to the neighborhood.Don't let the exterior put you off - it could us a bit of sprucing up. The interior is clean and attractive. The service is great, take out is easy and quick, and the prices are reasonable. What about the food?
