We put our name in for seating at lunchtime, and after 10 minutes, we had very nice bartop seating. We had looked at what others were eating for popular dishes but went rogue and ordered what we wanted. Razor clams in Barcelona were on my bucket list, and they were delicious. Fresh and lots of garlic, basil, and olive oil. Good thing there is complimentary fresh bread to soak up the drippings. My husband ordered the seafood paella, and it was a bowl full of fresh scallops, clams, mussels, and shrimp with a large langostino across the top. Super fresh and full of flavor. The crowds of people moving through the market were not obtrusive to the meal because their location is on the outermost avenue of the market. We showed up just before the main lunch rush and had zero wait to eat at one of the lost delicious and most fun places in La Boqueria - the largest public market in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona. Located at the less crowded side of the market, this stall still sees queues for seating when the main meal time hits. We had calamari, Russian Salad, patatas bravas, and more. Seafood was fresh and cooked to order right in front of us and prices and quantity was reasonable for two adults. The kitchen is open and you see everything being cooked if you're able to grab a counter seat. Note: For ANY seat in this market, keep your belongings close. Pick-pockets are everywhere in any major city, so be mindful of your stuff. Do not hang bags on the back of chairs. This place is near one of the entrances to the huge La Boqueria market and I'm so glad we grabbed two spots at the bar and chowed down on some delicious food and enjoyed some refreshing beer! That being said, we did experience a pretty rude guy behind the counter. It appeared as if he was friendly and helpful if you spoke perfect Spanish; my Spanish is very much the Mexican-influenced LA Spanish. At one point, one of the patrons dining next to us chimed in to ask for something on our behalf; it was really cool! The seafood looked so good, but we were only hungry enough to try one thing (as we spent the day eating our way through the city!) and we went with the Omelette with the Mushroom Medley. Wandering around Mercat de la Boqueria looking for food. Specifically Fresh seafood after looking at all those seafood stalls selling all those fish, shrimps and more... As a tourist, ending up here is not really surprising! But surprisingly enough though Kiosko Universal did not feel like a tourist trap. (Maybe I can get much cheaper or better seafood somewhere but hey it was fun experience eating here!) Seafood Mix (25 Euro) and Mixed Wild Mushroom (8 Euro) were both really delicious! Ocean fresh and the flavour was light and delicate. House white was perfect choice of drink to go with the food but of course a iced cold beer maybe even be better! Yelp 100 Challenge 2018 - 101/100 ! One of the best dishes we had on our trip to Spain was at Kiosko Universal. No, it wasn't any of the various fresh seafood platters. Instead, it was their mixed mushrooms. It was so amusingly simple in terms of ingredients as they just tossed multiple shrooms into oil, sprinkled some green onions and voila! What resulted was easily the most flavorful and rich simplistic dish I'd had. The essence was just bringing out the flavors of the food that really did not have a lot of bells and whistles but yet was loud in flavor. You have to try it. Oh, and their seafood was amazing as well. We had the prawns, clams, calamari, and mussels dish. All fresh and all delicious. It helps to have that and a big plate of calamari/shellfish and other seafood too but really I could come back here many times for the mushroom dish. Mushrooms lovers will be in heaven and I'd venture to say non-mushroom eaters will respect that this dish tastes more like a rich gnocchi than a plate filled with stuff that grows in soil and poop. It's also a very cool touristic experience being able to witness their cooks preparing the seafood while you sit at the bar that runs along a corner of La Boqueria. It's a bit pricier than the other stands in the market but this one is worth it. read more

I found my favorite place to eat in all of Barcelona. This place is something special. You have to sign in and wait for a spot to sit down to eat. We only waited a short 15 minutes. And it was well worth the wait. We got a seat at a bar and in front of us were many varieties of fresh seafood. We started out with wine and our server suggested a delicious white. I ordered the mixed seafood. There were Razor Clams, Octopus, Squid, big Red Shrimp, Scallops, Mussels and Langoustines. Cooked to perfection, I was in heaven for only $30 Euro. My wife ordered the Sole and it was superb. We ate and drank until we couldn't eat any more. What a fun experience. Unfortunately, we don't live here. I ate at this place a few years ago when visiting Barcelona, and my parents loved it so much that we came back a few days again. We love that it's inside the Boqueria, giving us multiple reasons to visit this foodie heaven! As we walked toward this food stand, my mouth was watering because the food smells amazing and I saw all the deliciousness everyone was eating. They took our name, and we waited about 5-10 mins for a table-I like that they are quick and efficient here. We ordered the seafood platter, which was definitely visually stimulating, please see my pic. I enjoyed the flavor and variety of seafood, but I did feel that it was bit expensive for 30 euros, since it was mainly clams and mussels-nonetheless, I'm glad we got to try so many things even if it was just a piece or shared piece each-3 of us shared this dish along with the peppers, although I have to admit this was our second lunch of the day. The razor clams and squid were my faves. The peppers were delish as well! I also enjoyed the house white and sangria. My favorite place to get seafood-- this is a must each year. The seafood is ALWAYS fresh, as they literally have whatever was brought in that morning and when they run out, they run out. There is little seating, so you may have to wait, but there's so much to look at in the Boqueria that who cares if you wait a bit for a fantastic meal?! Almost all of the seafood is prepared on a flat top with olive oil, garlic and parsley-- no frills. You really can't go wrong here!! Yummmmm-- been coming here for years and the quality is always the best! If you want to taste a bunch of yumminess on one plate, try the parrillada (a mix of razor clams, mussels, shrimp, little neck clams, squid and cigalas). Also... sounds strange, but definitely don't sleep on the surtido of mushrooms!! SO many amazing mushrooms lightly pan fried with garlic and parsley. Kiosko Universal is no doubt an above average Tapas bar. Here are 3 tips to make your experience more enjoyable... 1. You MUST get the omelet with the REALLY FRESH assortment of mushrooms. 2. You may get a fat, bald, dickhead at the counter taking your order. I'm not sure if we accidently sat in the "Spanish Only" section, or that he was pissed about his job...oh no it was just us, he was somewhat friendly to others...so yes, I will stick with just a dick! We had 1 1/2 days in Barcelona, and I was on a quest for good paella. The seafood looked good, so we waited 10-15 minutes to eat here and sat for drinks at the bar next to it. They claimed they called our name, despite me sitting right next door in sight of the guy to see when he called our name. I stood up when a table finished and left, and he gave it to another couple. I let him know that I had been standing there (10 feet away where he could clearly see me) and he said he had called us and then argued with me. Fine, we will wait for the next table. He put us at the counter, but we didn't fit and decided to wait for another table. All in all, it took us 30 minutes to be seated. The patatas bravas and pulpo are wonderful. The sangria is amazing. For entree we ordered the mixed seafood, which was tasty with the garlic butter/sauce they put on it. We then had frutti di mare, which was good but had a small amount of seafood on it. We also ordered paella which was AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. The spices were non-existent and it was THE FISHIEST dish I've ever tried. Hands down, it was the worst paella I've ever tried. The bill came to 100 Euro. If you're looking for good seafood and sangria, stop by here, but don't come here for paella. read more

Apparently, it's never too early for beer and seafood in Barcelona. I've never seen that combination of drink/meal for breakfast anywhere else.. I was hoping to try El Quim, but we chanced upon this little gem of a food stand instead. Anyway, it seemed a better option than stumbling around La Boqueria in search of an unknown location. Based on the reviews, it seems that the price is a little more reasonable here - my family of four had a nice, filling breakfast for 47 euros and change - but the menu selection is just as broad as El Quim's. We had the: 1) mixed seafood (razor clams, crawfish, calamari, mussels, and shrimp) 2) mixed vegetables (asparagus, carrots, mushrooms, and green pepper) 3) mixed mushrooms (sorry, i don't know my mushrooms) 4) potato omelette (this is pretty self explanatory) The food is super fresh and prepared on the flat top in the center of the kiosk, right in front of your eyes. I think the best part of the meal is watching the chef work his magic.. that and spying on what other customers are ordering. (: The service is friendly but not overbearing, and for those of you who don't speak Spanish, there is at least one waiter who speaks English. This is amazing restaurant located in Mercado de la Boqueria, It's always busy with lots of local and tourist. You may find out hard to get your seat but it is worth for the wait. Simply grilled Squid was so delicious and tender. I highly recommend. I order a lot of different seafood dishes and all of them was great and I was so fascinated to see their open kitchen. Tucked in the corner of the market, this place serves up fresh seafood dishes (some of the seafood displayed is live!) I only had the paella here as recommended by a friend, and I wanted to try food from other stores as well so needed to work with stomach space constraints. The seafood paella (15eur) was really good! I guess at that price point, it comes with less wonder why it was packed with so much seafood - lots of super thick and tender squid, and clams. Naturally, the paella was extremely flavorful! The only downside of this place was that it was extremely cold (wind tunnel?) and there was a weird smell... I guess it's a function of its location in the corner and there weren't many people around as well... but because of that I was more impatient for my food to arrive as I didn't want to sit there for too long. I would skip the croquette next time and try more seafood, but I want the other three again. They also give you a small plate of fresh bread, which I was so happy to have coming from Italy, where the bread always seemed a day old, but I think that's just the way they make it. Sop up the sauces with the bread and you will be happy you didn't let the flavors go to waste. They may have been a little happy with the salt, but they seemed to have the freshest ingredients. It stands out as perennial local favorites for their home-cooked, authentically Catalonian flavors. Following are the items we ordered: 1. Tortilla Zucchini(Zucchini Omelet~ 3 Euros) A rounded 4" fluffy omelet with cubes of roasted zucchini, a very simple yet flavorful dish, be sure to arrive before 10am, otherwise it might sell out. 2. Bacon Sandwich(4 Euros) Big slices of pan seared bacon in a traditional Catalonian bread(sliced baguette drizzled with olive oil and rubbed with fresh tomatoes). 3. Fried egg with mixed mushrooms(10 Euros) My favorite dish, mounts of varieties of mushrooms sauteed in a generous amount of olive oil, topped off with 2 deep fried over medium eggs and sprinkles of fleur de sel. 4. Razor Clam or Navaja(15 Euros), Razor clams look like long tubes with a shell on them. The texture is between clam and squid. This dish is simply prepared with olive oil, chopped parsley and drizzled with lemon juice. A must try dish! 5. Espresso & Cafe Americano(1.5Euros), full of robust coffee flavor, most locals only drink their coffee black, but if you like cream, ask for "con leche" (with milk) since cream aren't available in most places. The BEST MEAL I had in Barcelona! Not only is Kiosko in Mercado de la Boqueria, my favorite market in town for its 1 euro fresh juices, it has the best seafood and dishes I've tasted. It's difficult to get a table around Spanish lunchtime or even American lunchtime so if you don't want to wait, go early. When the seats around the bar are full, there is really no way in. The head chef does take a 'list' but he doesn't seem very organized so people just sit in any empty seat they can find. All the ingredients and kitchen are in the middle of the bar so it's a lot of fun to watch the chefs in action. You can see them make your food from raw ingredients to stovetop to plating/seasoning and it's a really exciting feeling to see your dish reach preparedness. We got 4 dishes (razor clams, sole, mushrooms, padron peppers) and loved them ALL, especially the razor clams and mushrooms. The padron peppers were also amazing but I've had great ones all over Catalonia. Prices here are not cheap (razor clams were 16 euro, mushrooms were 10 euro, etc) but it's worth it for the freshness and intense flavor. The only annoying thing was we didn't have enough cash since it was our last day in Spain and their credit card machine wouldn't work (bad wifi?). However, there are multiple ATMs in banks nearby. read more

I had the best meal of my entire trip to Barcelona at Kisoko Universal. It was incredible! I wandered around and ended up choosing it for a late breakfast/early lunch after seeing open stools and, oddly enough, remembering it from a Rick Steves guidebook. I was pulled in instantly by the gigantic plate of mushrooms on the counter in front of me. I am a mushroom fanatic, so once I saw those, I easily knew that I would be ordering the mixed mushroom plate. The staff is friendly and, despite how busy it can get there, it is easy to get their attention and quickly order. I put in my order for the mixed mushrooms and a cappuccino and patiently waited! Thankfully, the food came out extremely quickly. I took my first bite and, sweet jesus...it was amazing. The flavors were incredible. I don't know what combination of oils and herbs they used (heck, I don't even know the names of all the mushrooms in the mix!), but whatever it was equaled magic. My instant reaction was to start shoveling in bite after bite, but I held restraint and decided to instead savor each bite - a much smarter idea! The mushrooms came with a side of bread, which was great as I was able to sop up the extra oil and herbs that were left behind on the plate. The cappuccino was the perfect topper to the meal. For only about 12€, I had the meal of my entire trip. I left very satisfied and happy. I even returned on another occasion to have the mushrooms again. This time I dragged my boyfriend along and we ordered some shrimp as well and split everything. The mushrooms weren't quite as mind-blowing (there's nothing like the first time, I guess haha!), but they were amazing nonetheless. I heart this place. Very VERY happy with the food here. Happened to walk up when 2 seats were empty. Mostly locals with a couple of tourists. My boyfriend and i split the gambas (6 large shrimp) and the sauteed mushrooms. And wow... it was a wonderful mix of mushrooms, some of which I had never seen. A little oil heavy for my taste, but that does seem to be the style in general. Regardless, the food was fantastic. The shrimp seemed really fresh. Left with big smiles on our faces. Coworker introduced me to this place on a biz trip and apparently it was hard to get a seat here during peak dinner hours. Fortunately we got there just when two patrons were ready to leave so it was a rather short wait. We had two orders of raw oysters and I have to say they're one of the biggest and freshest I've had! I just wish they had some mignonette sauce to go with the oysters! But the Barcelonians were good with some lemon juice and Tapatio sauce. I'm fine with that. The grilled octopus we got was also good. There's no frills to the cooking but everything they serve is just super fresh. I'd suggest getting the grilled seafood platter next time. I was really excited to try this place after having seen it in "I'll Have What Phil's Having." Our experience wasn't as great I'd hoped. I chose with the egg poached in olive oil over mushrooms and my dining partner ordered scallops and vegetables. While everything was fast, fresh, and tasty - the excessive use of oil and salt left us feeling a bit queasy. Service was ok but not overly friendly. Understandable though, they move incredibly fast to serve everyone dining around the kiosk. The market this restaurant sits in is absolutely incredible - lots to see and appreciate.
