I get my hair cut twice a year. The first cut is either at the end of June or early July. I tend to…read moretake vacation then and realize that I'm so sick of throwing my hair up in a ponytail. The second cut is in December. It tends to be when I'm on vacation, after doing a ton of work to get a software release out the door. My software release duties have been offloaded this year. I am thankful. I felt like I was taken for granted for years. I now have three colleagues (yep, it's plural) who have taken over. It means that I am less stressed and I can get my hair cut before I go on vacation in December. Go, me! A week ago, I had planned on getting my hair cut yesterday. I tend to go on a Saturday because it's just nice to casually start my weekend off getting something nice done to my hair. What did I not anticipate? On Friday, the Ontario government announced that York region would go into lockdown on Monday. It meant that folks in my area would go into panic mode hoarding toilet paper and such again. Haircuts also fall into this category. My go-to place to get my hair cut is Great Clips. Hairdressers do a great job cutting my hair. Prices are decent. I'm not fussy. Just chop off three or four inches off my hair length and I'm the happiest person. I check in using the Great Clips app. It's convenient and reserves your name in the queue. My usual Great Clips location is on Copper Creek Drive. Years ago, there were at least three other locations in Markham, but they have all closed down. The wait time was an hour. Crazy! I did not feel like waiting in the rain, which would be the worst case. I looked at the lone Great Clips location in Stouffville and the wait time was even worse at 100 minutes. Nope, I'm not going there. I then looked at Richmond Hill. It has two locations. This one had a wait time of three minutes. I checked in after visiting Shoppers Drug Mart to fetch a parcel. This Great Clips is in a plaza that I visited often years ago. The Taco Bell is still here with a drive-thru. The Burger King has been replaced with a Wendy's. Canada Computers has moved across from its old location. I frankly didn't know about this Great Clips until I checked in. It's sandwiched between Ten Ren's Tea on the left and Pizza Pizza on the right. There was ample parking at around 1 pm. I backed into a spot and walked over. I walked in. All five staff members simultaneously welcomed me. I was not expecting that, but it was nice. One of them asked if I had checked in. I had. My name was the first one on the monitor. I felt like I was a VIP. The woman asked that I sanitize my hands and take a seat. There were two folks from the same family seated. I sat by the door, near the coat hangers. When their family member was done, I moved so I could physically distance myself from everyone and they could get their coats. A nice woman said that she was ready for me. I learned that her name was Maryam. I asked how she spelled her name. She said, "Mary, like yours, and just add am." It was cool. She asked what I wanted done. I told her that I'd like getting three inches off my hair. I also wanted a bob. She nodded. Here's the coolest thing. She guessed my heritage. I normally cringe when folks guess because they are way off the mark. "You are either Chinese or Indian," she said, looking into my eyes with a pretty beaded black mask on. "You're technically right on both guesses. I'm Chinese. My parents were born in India." There's a first. I was so impressed. I also enjoyed our conversation while she cut my hair. She admitted that she's chatty. I didn't mind it. I tend to be more chatty as I get older. She asked me how short the back should be. I was good with her original finger measurement. She used a trimmer and then asked me to look again. I said that she could go shorter. She loved that decision. We understood each other, which is half the battle when you're getting your hair cut. You could tell that she loves what she does. I was so pleased with my new 'do. She was, too. At one point, she tossed my hair around like a salad and exclaimed, "I am so happy with your haircut!" I loved her enthusiasm. I also enjoyed seeing how much volume my hair had afterwards. She has two children, 24 and 28 years of age. She confided that she is always worried about them. I let her know that it's a mom instinct and it never goes away. My mom is like that and I'm a grown woman. She agreed. She went on to trim my bangs. It's nice to get pampered! I thanked her. She was great dusting me off. She looked down at my purple Converse sneakers and said that she loved them. We both love purple. She gave me coupons for haircuts down the road. I paid using debit and tipped her. She was kind to come over and provide me with her name, although I will have the spelling etching in my memory. I may have found another Great Clips to call my usual spot. I had a wonderful experience. Hours are extended this weekend before the lockdown. (442)

In a highly competitive atmosphere, it is refreshing to see them make capital investments in marketing, apps and revamped storefronts. You get what you pay for, obviously, so make sure you tell them what you want and make sure to reward your stylist wherever possible.

Sumi asked lots of great questions and walked through every step of the process to make sure I was aware of the procedures and communicated what was going on, which I really did appreciate. Then, we proceeded to the application of the solution which was pretty cool as it was 3-person teamwork project to apply solution while putting my hair into curls. It was actually a fun experience. The final reveal of my hair was amazing. I was in awe of how my dull and boring thick black horn could look naturally shaped with the curls. The style was clean and smart and the staff provided helpful tips to ensure that I can maintain my look for a long-term basis. I highly recommend this spot if this is your first or ongoing perm appointment. It was one of the most pleasant experiences, especially for this person who does not like sitting in a chair for long periods of time.

I made a last minute appointment so there were only Creative Directors available to cut my hair. Despite the high cost I agreed to it because I figured it would be worth it and so the receptionist booked me in with Daniel. I actually hadn't cut my hair in over a year and decided to donate 10+" (my second time doing this, so I knew the process). The salon was also pretty well versed and suggested I bring a ziplock bag with me to store the hair after it's cut. Everything went super smoothly which is why I feel terrible to even write a bad review. I really enjoyed the conversations I had with Daniel but that's where he may have gotten ahead of himself. He told me that as a Creative Director, it's up to him to understand what the client wants through the conversations. So there was obviously a disconnect because the cut he gave me was NOT what I wanted. I have South Asian curly/wavy somewhat thick hair. And for the last 2 decades, my hair has always been cut in layers. But Daniel for some reason didn't pay attention to that and gave me a shoulder length blunt cut. That said, the length I have no problem with because it's going to a very deserving cause, but a blunt cut? Why would any skilled Creative Director think I wanted a blunt cut with my thick, curly bottom-heavy hair? Layers is really the only solution, unless he expected me to want to pin straighten my hair everyday. While he was blow drying my hair was actually when I realized he gave me a blunt cut, at the time I thought maybe he was blow drying it to then dry cut it (which I've had done before and is very common with curly hair) but no. His next client arrived and was waiting in the seat next to me and I just didn't want to stick around any longer, I thought it might look better after I washed it myself and let it air dry, but no. I also didn't have time to go back to see if he would "fix" it. Anyway, I gave myself 2 months to see if the cut would possibly grow on me, nope, still hate it. So I had to share my experience and disappointment. As much as I like Daniel as a person, it doesn't seem like he knows hair as well as he thinks he does.
