My mother started service with them over 10 years ago, so naturally we continued the service when she passed. This year I've had to ask them for 3 weeks to take a look at either the heater or the filter because it was turning on and off in the middle of the night. Three weeks before they finally looked at it and repaired it. This year their "accounting system" did not register 3 months of payments we made. It took them 2 months to realize it. When they called me there was absolutely no apology, just a demand that I pay all the months in 1 lump sum immediately. The only explanation I was given was that "it was like a flat tire on the highway", something that just happened and I had to remedy it immediately. My brother-in-law was SO frustrated that their payment system kept not registering or rejecting the automatic payments he handed the problem to me. I never write negative reviews because I don't want to damage someone's business over 1 or even 2 events, but this is unacceptable! read more

Kirby's maintained the pool in my mother in law's home Pasadena. Three years ago we totally refurbished the pool , it was beautiful, stately. We fired Kirby's this week: the level of pool was very low, the salt level was almost non existent and the filters clogged to the point of closure. The technician who came over didn't know how to turn on the water to bring the level up! Kirby's crew are unprofessional, incompetent and disinterested in their work. read more

I hired Kirby's pool service over a year ago, thinking that an established service such as theirs would be more reliable. I refrain from writing reviews as they are so subjective, but I felt that in this case it warranted one. For the record, this is just my view and others may have had really good experiences with this service. I found that I was wrong about that assumption. They were very good at basic service of cleaning the pool, however that is where it ended. They would constantly change the service day. If it looked like wind or rain or there was a holiday they would often cancel the visit all together. Included in the service was a bi-annual cleaning of the pool filter. I had two different pool experts look at filter in the last couple of weeks, and both stated that the filter had not been cleaned in quite a while. In addition, they had been hounding me from day 1 to replace the pool water. Off course they would charge between 250-400 for that service. I declined to do it. We had to clean the pool filter just 2 months after they claim to have done it, as it was totally blocked with sediment. In addition the filter panels were torn and colored purple. The color was from the use of a copper based item called PoolRX. Once the panels start to get the purple color, the pores start to get blocked, meaning that the panel is not able to do its job. We are now having to replace the filter panels, oh by the way the water issued was resolved with a specialized chemical treatment over the course of 4 weeks. I called and spoke to Kirby in regards to this, several weeks after canceling the service simply to let him know what I had been told by multiple people. Being offended that anyone would question their work he was very argumentative. As far as he was concerned, he is a consummate professional while the other companies providing service are snake oil salesmen. That sort of sentiment alone is a huge turnoff. They did refund me the balance on the month when I cancelled, so that is a huge point in their favor. Should you choose to use a pool service, be sure to educate yourself and understand the service being provided. Had I been more proactive, this may not have happened or I may have cancelled the service much earlier. Either way be your own watch guard. read more

Kirby is a nice guy, and he's priced competitively. If you stick to straight chemicals and cleaning, he's in his comfort zone. The issue we had was that Kirby offers to do repairs he has no business doing. It comes from a good place--he wants to help his customers but it created a huge amount of damage for us as he insisted for months that our filter should have a pool of water surrounding it after he did an upgrade. Come to find that the manufacturer of the filter and heater both sent reps out to verify the install was not completed properly, there supply and return line leaks, and it caused a huge erosion and mold issue. Also, he didn't realize our pool was a saltwater pool and 'converted it' back to being a chlorine one. I'd use him again in a pinch, as he does show up, but only for the smaller standard pool service items. read more

13 year pool pump went out and needed replacement. I spoke with Kirby and he walked me through all the options and took his time explaining the different types of pumps and brands. They offered a fair price for the install and came out the next day. They were super nice and efficient and got the new pump up and running in no time. Very satisfied with the service. Excellent service! We've been with Kirbys for about a year and a half now and have been very pleased with the service. They are very professional in how they explain what services they can provide. They do not try to hard-sell you and just lay out the facts. We recently had a new pump installed and immediately started seeing the decreased energy usage. We also recently had our pool drained and refilled. It went very smoothly and was done in about two days! Kirby is very patient and explaining pool service and maintenance. He takes most of the calls himself and gets back to you quickly. I also really like the pool guys to come out to do the service. They are very personable and flexible. They are often able to change your service at the last minute if you need it. Thank you guys it's been great so far! read more

Kirby did a good job on our acid wash. But I employed them as our pool cleaners for about 8 months before I couldn't take it anymore. Any time Kirby himself worked on your pool, things were great. But Kirby rarely cleaned the pool and the people he hired were terrible. In 8 months, three separate pool cleaners came to our house. Employee turnover is big. I would also never be informed that I was getting a new pool person either. I would just look over and some new guy would be walking into my backyard. In 8 months, our pool chemicals were NEVER balanced, even with brand new water. Kirby always had an excuse too- it was never their fault. I got in the habit of testing my own pool's chemical's because I never felt I could trust that the chlorine levels were safe. Algae was left in my pool for weeks. Every time I would discover algae I would have to let THEM know. They never spotted it themselves. This happened multiple times. Only after nagging Kirby would a pool cleaner attempt to clean it. Usually they never got it all and I would have to go in and finish cleaning it off the stairs myself. Kirby is a super nice guy but I got really sick of paying money for them not doing their job. read more

TOTAL NIGHTMARE! After Kirby talked me into replacing my pool pump because the city gives a $1000 rebate, he NEVER sent the installer's certificate I need to get the rebate. Instead, two months later, he cancelled my service after I asked a question about his holiday policy (seriously bizarre!) and hasn't responded to any of my texts about the rebate. Kirby seemed nice at first. Don't be fooled! He's the most UNPROFESSIONAL guy I've ever dealt with. On top of the $1000 for the rebate, he also hasn't refunded the money he owes me for the cleaning service he cancelled, another $120. What reputable company would do that? Be warned, folks! UPDATE: Kirby did send me the documents for the rebate and refunded the $120 service charge, but only after I wrote this review. Before that, I tried contacting him directly but got no response. Because he finally resolved the matter, I'll change this from a one-star to a two-star review, but I think it's fair for potential customers to know about my experience. read more

Just ended service with them. Started off fine. Came by, fixed a pressure gauge that blew off for free (although they just used an old part from a previous pump). Seemed very knowledgeable. Had them service my pool for about 4 months. During the time, I had been sent incorrect invoices on several occasions; the pool guy didn't show up multiple times, even though he left notes stating he would return on subsequent days. All in all, it took more time dealing with the mistakes and flakiness than I was willing to invest. Didn't really feel important as a customer. Just felt like a number. read more

This review of the company is for services rendered *prior to* the pandemic. I was with this company for less than a year (through May 2020), and the last 6 months I was with this company, the quality of the service was THE WORST. The owner (Kirby) pulled a bait-and-switch, where during the first few months of service, he initially sent someone who was competent at keeping the pool clean, and during the last 6 months or so, he started sending an incompetent young kid who could not maintain the pool. Algae was growing toward the summer months, he didn't do anything to get rid of it. I had to call Kirby at least 3 months and report the growing algae problem, and he kept getting smart and mouthing-off, instead of doing the job I was him paying for. After dealing with his mouthing off, and his incompetent kid who damaged my salt cell while doing a half-a**ed job of supposedly cleaning it, I had enough with this guy Kirby and his poor, unhelpful, and unprofessional attitude. Be aware of this guy Kirby, his poor attitude, and his bait-and-switch tactics. Not a good value for the amount he charges, and a smart-mouth to boot. Unbelievable. read more

I was skeptical at first not knowing much about pools but said yes because i trust Kirby's pool service and the price was reasonable. My spa stopped working 90 minutes after Kirby's technician finished his service and left. While it might not have been their fault, a spa that functioned perfectly for years completely turning off right after they left seems a bit odd (especially because the tech admitted to taking a couple less than standard shortcuts while cleaning it in order to save time), and Kirby refused to even come back and take a look at it without agreeing to pay for an additional service call. there are plenty of other pool service companies out there, I would recommend choosing one that stands by their work. read more

I'm one of those folks that never posts reviews, but Kirby has gone so far above and beyond in customer service, I have to post. My old pool guy would no-show all the time and did the bare minimum. Not Kirby, they show up like clockwork, really do spend a full 30 minutes on my pool, and I can always count on it to be it gleaming. But what is really exceptional, is when the cleaning device in the pool happened to break right when there were some strong winds blowning a lot of crap into my pool, I emailed them to ask if there was any way they could fix it that day or troubleshoot with me so I could fix it, as we had guests coming over. They sent someone over within the hour!!! While he was here, not only did he fix the cleaning device, when he heard we were expecting guests, he went ahead and cleaned the pool, as he could get it pristine faster than the cleaning device! I mean, wow!! They are so responsive, helpful, and professional!!! read more

They raised their prices but I kept giving them chances to improve. Owner doesn't know the first thing about dealing with customers but is very good at making excuses for bad service. Started off great but then things completely fell apart with these guys. Our usual guy quit the company so we had new person coming as replacement. But then none of them would show up. Then someone shows up another day completely unannounced not knowing anything about our pool or how to get in, so I'd have to walk them through everything again. This went on for 3 weeks. They also didn't do a good job. Some days a guy would show up for 10-15 mins and leave not 30 mins promised by Kirby. They leave without locking your gate. Use the water hose then leave it laying all around. They will never take out kids pool toys and goggles out of your pool unless you ask them. When I complained to Kirby, he then starts blaming you. Totally unprofessional. Rude to customers. Full of excuses. read more

If you are in need of ANY kind of pool service, for ANY type of pool, CALL KIRBY'S POOLS. We had an issue with our pool water, which was cloudy and just wouldn't clear up. Russ, the service manager came over and checked it out next day and made a plan to get things back on track. He and his assistant went over every part of the system and made sure that all was running as it should. He took apart the filter, cleaned it, re-installed parts that were not properly installed, replaced what needed to be replaced (never without checking with me first). Our pool is now glistening and looks brand new. It's amazing. Also, Kirby came by several times to make sure that the job was going well. This is a family owned business that is second to none in customer service as far as I'm concerned. We have signed up with them on a monthly basis and look forward to many years of a perfect pool. And BTW, Kirby, Russ and the rest are SO nice. SO professional. Just an amazing experience. I cannot say enough. read more
