Since Flåm gets cruise ships almost daily things book up. There aren't many options for restaurants open after 6pm in flam so it was nice to have one available in the hotel. The hotel was a little dated but the amenities were clean and comfortable. The room was fairly spacious and quiet. We enjoyed our balcony as the view is breathtaking! The shower/ tub is a big step to get into so be aware before booking if you have troubles with large steps. Breakfast was a tasty inclusion and served buffet style. The public spaces were clean and up to date. We had both dinner and breakfast included in our package which for two people was about 200 NOK. Both buffets were expansive especially the dinner buffet - the selection was huge! Everything was tasty. Since we don't leave until later in the day they stored our luggage for us. Overall a nice stay but even if this was 50% less it was a rip off.

The rooms are quite small, but the beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows. Our shower room however only had scalding hot water. During a very hot summer, this was very problematic. The wash sink had appropriate-temperature water. There was basically no air movement even with the windows wide open. The place is fairly far out from the main Flam attractions -- about half-a-mile or so. Breakfast was included and decent. Fairly typical Norwegian fare of fish, caviar, bread, hard-boiled eggs, etc. I can't compare prices, as all other available hotels were unavailable by time we had booked.

The daily service to provide fresh towels and clean the room has been a refreshing change from hotels in the states. The buffet style breakfast offers many Norwegian breakfast choices including sauna ham, pickled fishes, breads, waffles and a whole lot more. The real reason for staying here however is none of these things. It's the absolute stunning beauty of the fjord. It is unparalleled, even with what you will see in Flam - which was spectacular. I highly recommend making a day trip to gudvangen even if you choose not to stay the night. Taking the 2-hour fjord cruise from flam will not disappoint. It's spectacular all 2 hours and there are a few stops in between the two fjord destinations to drop off or pick up locals who live along the way - where the fjord cruise is their main form of movement between home and ports. All in all this is a highly memorable gem that will imprint on my family as a key part of our overall journey through Scandinavia.

Fjaerland is a fjolksy village of about 300 people, sitting along the Sognefjord where it meets the Jostedahlsbreen glacier. The town, dubbed "Norway's Book Town", is known for its secondhand bookshops...some even set in old cow sheds and pigpens! If you haven't come for the books, you are likely there to see and experience the surrounding magical scenery by kayak or by hiking through the mountains or glaciers. Whether you've worked up your hunger by hiking, bumming around bookshops, or delivering presents, you'll eventually be fjamished for lunch. There is no fjiner choice than to dine at Fjaerland Fjordstove. Fjabulously situated overlooking the fjord and glacier, Fjordstove hotel and restaurant charms with its amazing setting and shabby chic décor. At the reception desk, we met the fjastinating and hospitable hotel owner, Bard Huseby, who promptly guided us to a seat outside on the wrap-around deck. We felt like we were sitting in the middle of a live postcard with unbelievable views in every direction! Bard was quick to make us feel at home and ensure that we swiftly had beer in our hands to help us cool down and relax. We had grown so fjond of Hansa beer that we all ordered it without a second thought. Unfortunately though, we all regretted that choice later once we found out that Bard makes his own craft beer, Fjaerlands Ale. Hansa glasses in hand, we considered ourselves very fjortunate to enjoy such a tranquil spot where time seemed to stand still. The scene almost fjelt fjictitious, but our hungry stomachs quickly brought us back to reality. While looking over the menu, we appreciatively noticed that the hotel procures its ingredients locally (beef will come from grass-fed cattle in fields close to the hotel), including the reindeer meat in the burgers we ordered. Let's hope none of that meat came from everyone's favorite reindeer, or there will be a lot of sad boys and girls (and adults) this Christmas! So what is reindeer meat like? Our burgers were very flavorful and juicy with no hint of reindeer game-iness or tinsel at all. There was a fjaint aftertaste of wrapping paper, but that quickly crumpled away. I wouldn't say the meat glowed, but it was very lean and tender--definitely a burger that would go down in history! Our lunch and the great views at Fjordstove were some of our fjavorites from our trip! Though we likely won't be back in the fjorseeable fjuture due to the remoteness of the village, you should definitely pop in for fjeast here if you are in the area. If you're lucky, maybe you'll get to peek at Santa's "Naughty or Nice" list!

This charming hotel has a farmhouse feel overlooking the water and nearby glaciers, and the setting is intimate with about a dozen tables. We weren't guests at the hotel but we decided to make a reservation as this was a quick walk from where we were staying. It was a relaxed fine dining experience, definitely one of the best meals of our Norway trip and worth a detour if you are wandering the fjords. I would recommend making a reservation in advance using the contact number on their website, note the price for dinner was 550 kr per person as of Aug 2017. Tonight's menu was smoked fish to start with a lovely beetroot creme, a hearty plate of braised ox and cabbage, and finally a creative dessert of rhubarb topped with ice cream and a delightful sweet wafer. This was the type of food we hoped to enjoy in Norway!

We started the cruise from Gudvangen, which ends at Flåm. There was already a long line forming to get onto the boat including a group of people that was part of a cruise. The boat sailed smoothly and quietly as its electric. We chose to stand outside in the beginning, but it can get windy. We enjoyed the views of the landscape- fjord, mountains, and waterfalls. At one point, the boat sailed close to a waterfall for people to take photos. We sat inside after awhile, where we were able to still get a good view with panoramic windows. The journey is two hours long, and I was getting hungry. Eating/drinking what you bought on board is not permitted. I get it, but that kind of sucks. They do sell beverages including beer and wine as well as pastries, sandwiches, and chips- pricy though.

Pictures do not do justice to the beauty that we had experienced. Our meeting point was at Flam quay after a numerous train and bus ride. But first, upon arrival at Flam go straight to where line starts to enter the boat as line can get really long especially that there are a lot of tour groups as well. Better to get in first to get a good spot and reserve tables and chairs. We did our "Norway in a nutshell tour" on our own so we booked all our trains and bus ride separately as you can save about $200 per person doing it on your own rather than booking with a travel website. The vessel began its journey sailing through what they call idyllic Aurlandsfjord, before the boat continues through the narrow Naeroyfjord before arriving Gudvangen at the inner end. The trip takes around 2 hours one way. The Naeroyfjord (a West Norwegian Fjords) has been enlisted on the UNESCO World Heritage list along with Geirangerfjord since 2005. Food & Beverages: onboard the ship is a cafe that serves hot and cold drinks, a variety of pastries, sandwiches, hotdogs, chips as well as selection of wines & beers and a whole lot more if you get hungry. And you will get hungry as the ride was about 2 hours long. Tables and chairs are available inside the boat. We stayed half of our time inside and half outside as it was super cold in October. For cold weather be prepared to bundle up with heavy jackets, gloves, scarves and beanies because it goes a long way and it's very beautiful to stay outside of the ship just savoring the beauty of nature. The modern and very comfortable boat cruised us from Flam to Gudvangen. We were able to witness a lot of waterfalls, colorful Norwegian houses. The Norwegian nature all around was pretty impressive and again pictures nor videos do not do justice to the beauty of this place at all. This is one experience you cannot miss when in Norway. The onsite brewery/restaurant is quite good but you should also book a reservation there for dinner during busy season.

We ate dinner there each evening and each meal was out standing, we were impressed beyond words. This is the place for a comfortable, welcoming stay and if you enjoy eating.
