Chris and Chris absolutely know their stuff and they are passionate about spreading their knowledge. I would definitely recommend watching the videos they have on their website as background orientation to what you will be seeing and hearing. The 3+ hours went by quickly, with 3 or 4 stops, some easy walking, and a lot of narration in the van while moving (if you can't hear well, sit closer to the front) The areas traveled are quite beautiful, too. All in all a very unique experience, certainly unlike anything else, and in our opinion worth the cost and time.

Our guide for the day, Chris--one of two by that name--we were told, and he clearly knew his material. He is also an avid researcher of the area; I would not be surprised to see a book from him in the future. Seriously, the Mountain Spies tour and the conversations were historical, enlightening, and mostly entertaining. Our tour was on July 2 at 9 a.m., and we were the lone couple onboard. Chris supported the ride with a well-designed presentation deck, shown on a screen mounted behind the driver, with video and detailed infographics. If you have an interest in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), precursor to the CIA under the founding leadership of Wild Bill Donovan, then this tour is a must. You also get a perimeter tour of Camp David/Shangri-La, High Rock, Pen Mar, and the ultra-secret Raven Rock. We also stopped at the retired Fort Ritchie and its small museum, which brought to life the training and exploits of the OSS recruits who are a major story of the mountain. Chris gave us the gold-glove treatment and a wealth of historical knowledge to ponder. Our tour ended just shy of 1:00 p.m. Great value, excellent presentation, and well worth the time. Workers were polite and very helpful when asked questions. And the ambiance was fun and enjoyable ! The food was decent but the gift shop didn't have the size long sleeve I wanted which was my only disappointment. Other than that I'd recommend everyone try liberty mountain!

The lobby and front desk areas are stunning, and the firepit right outside was absolutely dreamy for evening hangouts. Our room was comfortable with cozy beds, but I was disappointed to learn that daily cleaning only happens if you call to request it--so ours was never cleaned during our stay. The pool was fun, but it closes at 8pm, which feels a little too early. It would be amazing if they extended hours to 10 or 11pm. The biggest downside was the very loud AC system. Even when we turned ours off and cracked the window, we still heard the neighboring unit running all night. It definitely made it hard to sleep. Overall, though, it's a beautiful property with a lot of charm--perfect for family gatherings and downtime between adventures.

My room had a wide range of issues which did hinder my trip and made the high price for my cabin non justifiable. The main office was closed and called back the next day which was not ideal. The events were not always timely for instance the advertised pool party didn't start getting setup until 15 minutes after advertised and it was indeed not a party. Lastly the canteen was inexcusably inefficient for grabbing a meal by the pool. You had to wait in line for 45+ minutes and then were quoted an additional 1+ hour until you would get your food. In all this park has so much potential to be better. But if cabins are not up to par, guests should be contacted in advance or given a remedy.

There was no signage telling you anything about the historical value of the landing and ferry at this Potomac River location. There are picnic tables, grills, bathroom and a very narrow boat landing. Campground requires reservations I'm assuming online, again no signage. The park police showed up while there. No alcohol allowed even when camping You have to drive through a short dark one lane narrow tunnel to get to the location. I was fairly disappointed because no information about location available. Free to use park and landing, not sure about tent camping sights.

A bit of a mixed bag for me at Cunningham Falls…read more.. I was excited to find a listing of parks that supposedly had wheelchair accessible trails. I've never been to Cunningham Falls before and the idea of seeing a waterfall seemed lovely. However, the accessible boardwalk has strips on pretty much everything board which made me feel like I was riding a very angry horse. Each bump shot pain up my spine. I'm writing this a day later and I still hurt, and I think I'm a pretty tough chick... and the view of the falls was mostly blocked and not worth the actual pain. The Falls is more like a small stream of water that splashes down some rocks. It's a soothing noise but I was expecting something more grandiose... I suppose I could blame climate change. Most of the old stream beds are dry. We also checked out the "south beach" which I enjoyed. There's plenty of pavement, and packed gravel. I couldn't get close to the water, but that's okay because it was a sunny day and I prefer to stick to the shade. I was impressed by the fact that every picnic table has a grill nearby. If I lived closer I'd like to think I'd come to the south beach often, hide in the trees near the river, grill something delicious... but I was a several hours long trip from Dundalk, so it's unlikely that I'll return. It was a nice day-trip though. I don't regret going.

All within reach are the Bollman Iron Truss Bridge, a railroad lift bridge, the Conocheague Creek aqueduct (dry), turning basin and Lock 44. The visitor center sells a few C&O canal related items and holds a few displays. In addition, the property holds a few other structures which are not open to the public. The center is very popular with the locals who are out to get some exercise in such a scenic and peaceful site.

There was a geocaching event going on in the area, and the towpath is always popular with bicyclists, so it seemed that we got the last parking spot in the lot. The visitor's center is small, but as is the case for most such NP centers - informative. Lots of free brochures to be had, plus a number of items for purchase. We then walked to mile marker 98, and back toward mile marker 100. Even with the amount of cars in we'd seen in the lot, the towpath was mostly quiet and we spotted a fair amount of wildlife.

Connectivity not an issue. A little hard to find Zigbone, as there is zero signage along the way, save a small one right at the entrance. Thankfully, an easy drive to both Emmitsburg, MD, and Waynesboro, PA, as Sabillasville has a US Post Office but no other stores or restaurants.
