Had a great experience. Performed in my first pistol competition. The competition wasn't part of Knob Creek but it was on their property and I had to register through them. While in their gun shop, it was like eye candy. Guns everywhere. They had everything that you could wish for. The shop was very organized and clean. Plenty of parking was available (gravel). Some parking even had cover which I thought was nice. Would and will be going back again. Getting there was no problem. My GPS got me to their territory, once the GPS stopped, they had signs guiding you on which way to go. You are in the middle of nowhere surrounded by trees so I can only imagine how dark it gets out that way. I really enjoyed shooting in the pistol competition with great folks, great atmosphere and plenty of Guns. More pictures coming as soon as I get them. read more

This place is a playground for gun enthusiasts, but also there are very strict safety rules everyone must follow. You can rent almost any gun ever made inside and buy your ammunition rounds. Everyone must wear eye protection and ear plugs before going to the range. My cousin brought his own guns so we didn't have to rent any, only ammo. We also bought tannerite which is a gun powder mixture which explodes when you shoot it. Highly recommended if you're looking for something with some feedback other than paper targets. Every 20 minutes, they call out cease fire and everyone has to put their guns down and plug their guns with a marker so we know it's not loaded. During cease fire, you can go out and place your targets or observe them. This is by far the best shooting range I've ever been to. read more

These people think, just because I brought with me 30 k worth of guns, i would be a good target to offload some high priced trash covered in dust! I used to enjoy going to the range there until the range officers started getting a power high. I tried going again just to see if it had changed but as soon as I sat my range bags down on a table, the officer on duty immediately jumped in my face and started yelling that I wasn't in a spot that he wanted me to be in. That was really the only reason I would go since their store prices are way too high. Now the only reason I go is to get a feel for something I like since they do have a large selection. But after that I can go to another gun store in my area and order it for cheaper. Not recommended for new shooters. They will just scare you away. read more

The people at customer service and the people monitoring the gun range were all very nice. All the rules were very clearly spelled out and there is a system you have to follow. If you don't follow it, the people monitoring the gun range will talk to you and if they deem necessary tell you to leave. I was amazed at the different guns people were using coming from our home state of California where everything is banned. read more

The store is very well stocked and the staff are helpful as well. If you're going there to shoot or secure a new firearm then you're in the right place. IF you're looking to sell or trade a firearm I suggest you don't. I sold one AR-15 w/mags, fully furnished magpul accessories, one Ak-47 w/Picatinny rail, SPARC optic and fore-end grip to include several 30rd magpul mags, one Sig SAUER P250 compact with two mags and rounds and a rifle bag. All for a whooping 1100 USD. That price was low ball(being polite about it). I didn't need the money but I was curious to see how business was conducted. So my personal opinion for most things it's a fine business but for trading or selling firearms don't do it. read more

This is not a place for a beginner to try out a gun. Good ole boys who get off on yelling at people. I know safety is the top concern...but, all the yelling and lack of instructions on when you can enter the fence just makes people nervous. I purchased the family range membership for $150, quick a deal! While there I was able to schedule a mini training session with one of their range officers, Cole. I also attended a CCDW class as well on January. The time with Cole was super informative! I cannot say enough about his teaching/training technique. He was a fantastic trainer, and teaches all the fundamental concepts of shooting. He is great for a person new to shooting. I have so much more confidence after working with him. During the class, I was expecting to be very bored for 8 hours. That was not the case at all. I was very engaged and learned so much from the time spent in the classroom and range. I was very prepared for both written and range test. I can see Cole's love for fire arms and safety. I am beyond pleased with the experience and confidence I now have thanks to Cole! I called exactly 5 shops looking for one specific item. All of them answered the phone without any greeting other than "Yeah?" or "Guns." Thank god the fifth guy said "Knob Creek's got that." Michael answered the phone and immediately knew whether or not the item was in stock. First time I heard a "Thanks for calling, how can I help you" all day. Upon arriving at the shop, every staff member stopped talking and turned toward me with full attention. I found Michael and he eased me through the tedious and necessary background check process while also showing me the item I was purchasing and directing me toward other items of interest. I couldn't take the item with me just yet and they were happy to hold onto it for me until later. Overall, Knob Creek is one of the most well put together ranges I've seen in this city. The shop is staffed with knowledgeable, friendly people who made me feel completely at ease, even when I felt I had a stupid question. I had never handled, never mind shot a gun before. I'm fairly mechanically inclined, and safety concious though. When I walked in, I explained to the nice gentleman behind the counter that I had never shot a gun before, and would like some help in picking one out, and ya know, not shooting myself in the face. After a few jovial ribbings about my ancestry and home state of Massachusetts, he walked me over to a case, and picked out a pistol that he assured me would be really hard to shoot yourself with. We did the money part of the transaction (they take cards, obvi), and I wandered out to the range with my buddy just in time to catch the briefing before the firing line went hot. I had never seen a gun shot before, did I mention that? So, here I am, obvious city guy from MA with some toy pistol, and this guy 7 feet away unloads with an AR15 (M16). I soiled myself. Twice. Once I put myself together, and loaded a magazine, I managed to screw up my handgun to the point where I had to bring it back in and get another. They were nice enough to give me another one that worked, so I took it, and went back to firing at the range. Uhh... useful stuff... the stands are cardboard, and blow over in heavy wind. The range is about 300 yards long. You place/retrieve targets at the top and bottom of the hours. I'm sure more experienced people will have more nuanced reports then mine, but I was a complete noob, and made it obvious, and they were still nice to me. There is a lot to be said for not being an snob about what you do for fun. These guys are top notch, and if I'm ever back in The Shep, I'll be back here. With better earplugs. read more

And me not going to ranges a lot i was scared of trying this new range out to go because didn't want to be yelled at like how other people had mention. But let me tell you that guy that's in charge of the outdoor range is amazing. He is the nicest most helpful person I seen at a gun range!!!!! They offer classes their and I felt like he gave out classes for free! He helped other people on their stance, he gave out pointers , he instructed you on what you did wrong. I had got a red dot online that I bought from Amazon and not even from them directly. I did not know how to zero it and I asked the guy if he can help and he helped me no problem and got it spot on. I was so pleased because he saved me hours of time trying to get it zeroed when he helped me out in under 5 minutes. Really appreciate people like him. My mother and I went into the gun range store after the range and was helped out buy a very lovely lady that helped us with guns and spent the time to show and explain my mom the different holsters they had for guns. I really wish I knew their name because those 2 people deserve the credit. I will for sure be coming again and even looking at getting their yearly membership. Being raised here and working here I guess I'm a little biased and I haven't ventured to other ranges or gun shops. At KCR our mission is to provide our customers of all ages a safe, family-friendly, affordable, clean and comfortable place to shoot, enjoy and learn about firearms and firearm safety on our 350yd range. Our gun shop provides every shooter novice to apprentice with everything they need with over 3,000 firearms in stock, ammo, targets, scopes and more to enjoy a fun day of target shooting. It's only $10 to shoot all day, where can you go besides your own back yard to shoot all day that cheap. The Firing Line. Let me begin with this, the rules are there for yours and everyone's safety. Hearing protection, Eye protection and chamber flags are all mandatory when one is entering the firing line. Some people don't understand the rules and why the Range Officers's get on them or why they won't let you handle your firearms on a cease fire. Again the rules are there for everyone's safety. We can't allow people to handle their firearms on a cease fire, as it puts all in harms way as they are setting their targets. As some may be a professional or avid shooter, there are many others who are not. You are more than welcome to take your firearms to your vehicle while the line is hot, so all you will have to do is pick up your targets when they call a cease fire. We appreciate everyone's patronage, but these are set rules and regulations and they will not be changing. Weekends can be very busy and if you would like to avoid a crowded firing line, I'd suggest coming during the week. CCDW Classes. We have approximately 72 CCDW classes a year that are held in our Snack bar. It is a full day of class, so expect to be here from 8:30am to approximately 5-6pm. It is first come first serve and no reservations are needed. Be sure to bring a lunch, otherwise we have snacks and drinks in our snack bar. You will need $75 for the class, a handgun, 50 rounds of ammo, hearing and eye protection and a gun cleaning kit. This is not a weapons training class and the instructor can not teach or individually train you on your firearm. The instructor will go over basic handling, safety and cleaning of your firearm. Paying attention is key to completing this class. Student's will also need to hit 11 out of 20 on the black silhouette at 21ft / 7yds during your firing line test to complete this class. You will get a certificate of completions a few weeks after completing the class. You will take that certificate to your local Sheriffs Department and pay a fee to get your concealed deadly weapons license. It may take a month or two to get your license. Gun Store. Our sales associates are friendly and very knowledgeable about guns and will direct you towards the best possible solution for you and your needs. You can lay down the rules and maintain a safe environment without being a jerk. They're so hardcore it takes some of the enjoyment out of it. I recommend the range, I go every weekend. This is a nice facility, and a fun place to shoot. The sales staff is very knowledgeable of products and generally friendly. Selection, options, and prices are decent. Range fee is super cheap for how long you can stay. The worst part of KCR is the Range Officers, which are gruff, unfriendly, and seem to never want to answer sensible questions (this is based on experience from multiple visits). If you are looking for a fun place to shoot random stuff (you can bring loads of shootable items: cans, car doors, old produce, LG&E bills, etc.), without having to rush, this is it. If you are looking to improve specific areas of pistol handling, this is not a great place for that, as you can only go down range every 30 mins, and there is minimal close distance shooting, unlike an indoor range with a moveable target. If you are doing fine tuning on high caliber, shotgun, or long range stuff with a scope, this may be for you. Also, they offer more dates for CCDW classes than anywhere else around. There are numerous events that they put on. The biggest KCR hosts is one of the nation's top Machine Gun Shoots. The next event is October 10-12, 2014. read more

We (2 women) went in for the conceal carry class and were treated like crap from the moment the employee 'Butch' looked at us. Maybe because we didn't have flannel on, were dressed nice, had jewelry on! He looked at us and spoke to us like we were stupid. He said 'you have to follow directions' yes we are in a class, of course. He then proceeded to tell us we couldn't take the class because we didn't write our city and state on the form! I have never been discriminated against for being a woman but obviously this place treats women like they are second class. What a waste of space when they can't even find employees that want to teach everyone how to shoot a gun. We were going to buy guns, cases, a safe. They missed out on several hundred dollars from two women and will get a lot of bad reviews because of people like Butch. This is definitely not a judgement free zone! read more

This place used to be my go to gun range being that it is only 3 miles from home. Up until about 2 years ago you could go out there and have a great time. They recently changed insurance companies I'm guessing and that gave their range officers a license to be assholes. If your just spraying bullets this place will work, but if you intend to do any kind of precision shooting forget about it. Being badgered to use your 0.50 safety glasses while shooting through a $600 scope is ridiculous. Take your money elsewhere. They also have the best Gun shop in state and surrounding states. The owner is very polite and cares about his customers and so does his employees. Went to the military gun show. It was only $15 for admission and free parking. Absolutely bring hearing protection! It was very entertaining to see the variety of rifles and machine guns. Also, stuff catching on fire was really captivating. Even though surrounded by guns, there was plenty of security and it felt like a safe environment. I've been twice, both during the bi-annual Machine Gun shoot. Wow! What an experience for this Dallas blonde!! The second time I went I borrowed a friend's S&W 76 and competed in the subgun competition. You'll love the down range destruction zone... Heeeeeeavy auto firing at boats, a fire truck, tractors, semi empty propane tanks, etc. etc. I felt like I was in a war zone. My hair smelt like gun smoke and barbecue and I loved it. The staff people were very friendly and didn't turn their nose at this city girl. They had tons of booths selling all kinds of knives, gun parts, military paraphernalia, and stuff for all the "tacti-cool" guys out there. It's the most money you'll see 'spent' in three days at a any gun show. read more

I enjoy this place quite a bit, the people are great to work with and hospitable. They call me speedy, I use an electric cart due to disability.......all are trusted friends. Yes the range officer is strict, he has to be, and yes I have had my hand slapped. That is why I like this place, safety first. My grandmother went into this store to buy a pistol for self defense. After she payed for her new firearm she went home to get her son to help her try it out and get used to it. After she fired 10 to 15 rounds through it the pistol completely jammed, not even the slide will move anymore. So she took it back to knob creek hoping they could fix it or order her a refund on a defective product they sold. They did not. After a few days of talking to them the best they said they could due was to give most of her money back. They sell defective firearms and won't even refund money spent on them? Knob Creek Gun Range, located just outside of Louisville, KY (in Bullit County, no less!), plays host to the largest machine gun shoot and military gun show in the nation. Their semiannual three-day machine gun shoot and military gun shows held every April and October have become THE show for Class III weapons collectors and history/firearms enthusiasts to attend. Nowhere else can you see a larger assemblage of civilian-owned machine guns, flame throwers, restored armored fighting vehicles, artillery pieces and associated hardware! Contrary to popular belief, Class III weaponry is actually legal to own in *most* states. The number of states currently allowing civilian ownership of fully automatic weapons is something like 33 or 35 I believe; but as one naturally expects, California happens to be one of the states prohibiting the average citizen from owning guns equipped with Giggle Switches. The Class III category includes such fun hardware as machine guns, sound suppressors, short barreled rifles/shotguns, grenade launchers and even artillery pieces (which are sub-classified as Destructive Devices). Owning the "fun" stuff not only involves dealing with the very strict and requisite Federal hoops to jump thru (along with special taxes) but having an extremely large bank account as well. The number of civilian-legal machine guns on the market is finite due to stricter Federal legislation that presently only allows the military, law enforcement and commercial dealers/manufacturers to possess newly manufactured MGs. We have Ronnie "Bedtime for Bonzo" Raygun's administration to thank for that 2nd Amendment restriction (Hi, we're from the Gummint...we know what's best for you!). In a nutshell, the stricter regulations limit your average collector to purchasing only hardware manufactured prior to the 1986 Federal cutoff date, and those specimens are a finite quantity whose price and value continue to skyrocket. Feh! In addition to machine guns, the buying and restoring of MiG jets, Panzer tanks, etc. with original working armament is also a fully legal (but EXPENSIVE) segment of the Class III hobby! When I attended, the first day of the show was spent gawking at all the older nifty belt fed machine guns set up on one of the firing lines. I got to see all kinds of WW1 era Maxim guns, WW2 German stuff like MG34s and MG42s and quad mounted .50 caliber Browning M2s (Ma Deuce!) chattering away. Neat-o!!! Another cool thing was witnessing Jonathan Ciener's ground mounted electric Mini-Gun in action (this is the type of electric gatling gun usually mounted on aircraft); I just heard one fast Zzziiiiiiiiiip and the next thing you know there's a HUGE pile of expended brass on the ground! I didn't check out any of the submachinegun competitions but got to spend trigger time on the M1918A2 BAR (just one of the fruits of John M. Browning's genius), an M3 Grease Gun and the belt fed Vietnam-era M60 GPMG. It was a such a great experience walking M60 fire into one of the many bullet riddled target cars downrange! Knob Creek is where automotive failures like Pintos, Vegas, Pacers and Gremlins redeem themselves and actually become useful! Flame throwers were also available to satisfy your Inner Pyromaniac but I didn't partake because I aint much of a firebug. I definitely felt the heat radiating from the ribbons of ignited napalm while milling behind the firing line though! We only went for the evening portion of day 2, which featured the night time shoot. The entire firing line lighting up the range with tracer fire made for a pretty awesome spectacle. Day 3 was spent wandering the gun show tent and just marveling at all the old WW1 and WW2 era hardware for sale. So many neat goodies that I had only previously seen in reference books! So I went to the famed Knob Creek, blasted away at an old car with some neat-o hardware and all I got was a lousy tee-shirt! Five stars...the KCR machine gun shoot is an event and destination well worth taking a cross country roadtrip to check out! -------------------------------------- Addendum on accommodations and the locale: We stayed at the Louisville Holiday Inn off Eye-65 which was a very short drive from the range and close to local points of interest. Louisville is a great town that's totally worthy of exploration! Things I liked about Louisville, KY: 1) ear X-Tacy - A very well stocked indie record store! 2) Thrift shops and used bookstores - Found some really great 1950s lesbian pulp fiction paperbacks for cheap. Also bought some nifty vintage Old Man shirts in excellent condition and a Super 8 reel of "The Creature From the Black Lagoon." Thrift score!!! 3) Very nice, older houses in charming neighborhoods with tree lined streets (like Midtown Sac, but with a Southern feel). Couldn't find Hunter S. Thompson's mother's house though. Knob Creek, right off of Dixie on Hgwy 44 is a gun range and gun shop that puts the boom in bang. A very big establishment, family owned and operated by a gun smart staff. A very large selection of firearms. The range is very big and ran with a monitor that may be on your ass if you do not follow the simple directions, safety first, feeling second. This is a great place to bring your earplugs and your wallet. There is a break and snack area with every snack food option. It is a long drive in from the main road but there is a new bridge and gravel parking lot. They have a large machine gun shoot twice a year that brings in thousands of gun enthusiasts from all over the country and world. If you can not find it here, it probably is hard to find anywhere. Bring the fun and your gun to shoot some targets on this 300 yard range. read more

Despite what people say about the rules, knob has to make sure to keep everyone safe that visits the range thats the reason behind why they operate how they do. If you listen to what they say during cease fire and use some common sense you will have no issues what so ever. With such a cheap range fee whats not to like, just listen, use common sense, have fun and enjoy shooting read more

Know creek gun range is by far thee greatest experience for not just gun enthusiasts and military personnel, It's for all ages, adrenaline seekers, it's family friendly, and it's just an indescribable experience! I've been for six years and it never ceases to amaze me! It gets bigger and better every year! I thoroughly respect and appreciate the security and organization of the shoots, and I greatly appreciate the prayer that is given before the main shoot! Not even NFL games say a prayer like that! I took a Concealed Carry Deadly Weapons class here. DO NOT DO IT. Everything about it was horrible. The facility was like the tables in an elementary school lunch room and the seats were all bent from adults sitting on them. The hvac unit was exposed and very loud. The instructor was pretty terrible for multiple reasons. Each person should have shot at individual targets instead we shot 10 people to 1 target. Useless. read more

Every employee or contractor for this event was just amazing.... We are from out of town and will absolutely return. Its a lot of walking on graveled uneven hilly pathways.. Very dusty.... Snack bar line way very long yet the wait was minimal. The ladies moved you through with a smile. The price was perfect for a long day out there.
