The guys were on-time and got right to work. All in all they completed the job quickly and were nice. A few cons: They used my extension cord to run their drills and equipment. Not a big deal, but I thought they would rather use their own stuff. And they didn't roll it up when done. They had to use my hose to run water down the drain in the garage. Water got everywhere, which was expected, but they didn't move stuff that was in the line of fire. Nothing that important, but I would have preferred them to clear the workspace first. And I would have hoped that they would have at least swept out the puddles after the work was complete. The guy asked me for a plunger. Really? You're the freaking plumber and you don't have one?

This was not an emergency, I did not need to do it immediately, and I was more than happy to let them pick the day and time for the job. The heater itself was covered under warranty, so that cost was zero. The labor cost however, was a staggering $1600 for 3 hours. Now, I'll be transparent: I did not ask for a quote beforehand, as I did not expect a heater swap to be so highly priced, and Hampel did not offer a quote. For reference, plumbers in the St. Louis area typically charge $35-$130 per hour (source: Angi). At 3 hours, that's roughly $105-$390 for the job. Home Depot charges approximately $325 for basic water heater installation labor. Lowe's comes in around $200-$400. I paid $1,600. To their credit, after I raised the issue, Hampel did offer a $200 discount, bringing my total down to a still-impressive $1,400 for a 3-hour labor-only job. That's roughly $467/hour. The work itself was excellent. The water is hot. I have no complaints about the plumbing. Only about the invoice. If you use Hampel, and plenty of people do, I would simply suggest asking for a written quote before work begins that breaks down every single line item. We finally came across an issue that, we believed, was serious enough for a professional. We called Ed Bellm, who have served our area for well over 50 years. Upon our original consultation, things weren't looking good--it seemed our plumbing concern (a corroded copper water stack) was going to cost us a great deal of money. When Chris, the company's owner, came out to give us an estimate for the work, he found that our water stack was not affected, but we simply need to attend to some atypical piping from the home's previous owners. He fixed us up right there and charged us nothing for his visit. They returned the next day at the agreed to time and proceeded to do a good job installing the new hot water heater. The technicians were friendly and knowledgeable. I was somewhat concerned about the age of all the connecting pipes, but it wasn't an issue, even though their technicians were able to determine that my bad heater dated back to 1986 (I'm only the second owner and I've owned the house since 1995). Under the circumstances I was very pleased with the timely response from Orr Plumbing. But this story is not quite finished, after cleaning up most of the water and associated damage, I determined there was still a leak and it was causing a riverlet across my basement floor. Upon further investigation, I was able to determine that the source of the leak was the main inside shut-off valve. I called Orr and ended up speaking with Mr. Orr. He gave me a quote for replacing the valve. When the technicians showed up, they determined they could rebuild the valve at a much lower price, so I had them do the work. They even sent a technician to my house a few days later to pick up a check as the check I left them was for the original amount, which they didn't take on the day they performed the work. A very nice piece of customer service in the eyes of this customer. Thanks Orr Plumbing for quick and good service, they were straight shooters to do business with. I will definitely call them again the next time I am in need of plumbing services.
