Where to begin, Dusty is my new favorite local Hair guy. I'm extremely picky especially since I use to do hair modeling and I am so glad I went to Dusty. I've been receiving so many compliments with my new cut and color. His salon is intimate, cozy, and all around gave me the sense of well being, healthier and much more sustainable (we share the same values) than other salons. If you practice mindfulness, you'll absolutely love this place. Dusty gives you the attention you won't get at a corporate salon. There's street parking in the neighborhood street and a cute patio outside before you enter the salon. He takes the time to get to know your wants and needs and he can translate that beautifully when he loves your hair up. I got my hair cut at 5:15 and at 6:00 a stranger asked me who cut my hair. That's a testament to Dusty. I go to Dusty regularly for my hair cut, approximately every 3-4 weeks. I see below that he's great for wedding's -- awesome! This review is for people looking to get a quality, stylish haircut on a regular basis. My first experience with Dusty was chopping off my long hair in favor of something short, a bit more mature and modern. Mission accomplished. I am not the sort of person who gabs with my stylist. Dusty and his team are not only top professionals at what they do, the salon is such a calming, inclusive space. For as long as we live on the same island, he will be my forever hairstylist and I will always highly recommend him to anyone looking for someone to do bridal hair/makeup and cuts/color! I randomly met him while helping him at the counter on a shift two years ago. We chit chatted and I mentioned I was getting married, and he mentioned he did bridal hair and makeup! One thing led to another and I booked my special day with him! My dress was retro 50's style and I wanted the hair and makeup to match. I gave him full creative control and was absolutely pleased with the outcome! I'm Asian/mix so my hair is very thick and I always have a hard time putting it up all cutesy because it's so heavy and it'll just fall apart, but seriously, from mid day all the way through the ceremony, to the reception...and even till late night at tikis with my friends, the hair held up like a champ! And the makeup was beautiful! I knew he was a keeper. So I went back to him after the wedding for my cuts and colors and have never been disappointed. My hair used to be almost down to my butt, and I had it in a bun EVERY day. It was heavy and annoying. I finally decided that I wanted to donate it in memory of my mother who passed away from ovarian cancer, and to go from waist length hair to pixie short...and I ended up coloring it red! Seriously, I would never consider going to anyone else other than Dusty! And I did not regret it once after chopping it all off! Today I just got back from another appointment to maintain my pixie and just love it so much. And surprisingly, the color from about 4 months ago is still looking decent! Dusty was honestly the best makeup artist I have ever worked with. He's so friendly, charming, and his skills are just amazing! You walk into KOH salon and it feels so cozy and relaxing. You can tell just from walking into the salon how detail-oriented Dusty is and his attention to making each detail just right is how he is as a makeup artist. His space is as inviting as he is and you feel right at home. I did two trials with him before my wedding and each look was different but they both fit me so well. I am an asian women with a darker complexion and sometimes with other makeup artist, they tend to use foundations that are too light or go really heavy on the makeup. With Dusty, he carefully listened to what I wanted and delivered exactly what I was looking for in a makeup look. It was elegant and enhanced all my natural beauty. There were definitely moments where I was uncomfortable getting some eye makeup put on because I am not use to getting my eyes done but he was so patient and made sure every step of the way I was comfortable and okay with what was being done. Us girls loved our make up and hair. It was weightless, with enough coverage, lasting for the rest of the day with no issues with the Hawaiian weather. I personally didn't want to take it off because of how nice it looked even at the end of the night. I was contemplating on trying to sleep with it to see if it will last the next day. Every single email/ question I had was answered in a timely manner, I felt consistently confident in my choice to hire him and that confidence was only reinforced with every interaction we had. Wedding: So We got married on Orcas island which involves travel coordination - Not only had Dusty made it a point to communicate with me that he had booked his ferry in the coming weeks before the wedding but he made it a point to be on island the night prior to the wedding, which that alone really eased my mind - because who wants to have to worry about their hair and make up artists not showing!? So Dusty arrived early for set up with his wagon full of products and did an AMAZING (if i could bold and underline that I would) job on my bridesmaids hair as well as My hair and Make up. For a little background, I'm Korean & Japanese, I have a very oily monolid, and an incredible amount of super thick Asian girl hair. I typically don't get my make up done professionally as not everyone understands skin undertones or a monolid, and honestly one of my biggest fears was that I'd spend a large sum of money to end up looking like a pumpkin with two black eyes (again undertones) with eyemakeup that would smear and run while I happy cried throughout the day. This was entirely not the case!! My make up looked FLAWLESS, my skin looked so healthy and glowing and not orange! Dusty matched my make up with the warm tones in my bouquet and my eye make up did not budge (probably an overshare here - but the eye shadow will still on my lids after a shower the night of the wedding and into the next day) My hair was PERFECT, it was literally what I had envisioned, and Dusty did it with ease! Masks, temperature checks, hand sanitizer and hand washing protocols -- of course. He's on it. But he also has a top quality air purifier and will soon also have a UV sanitizer employed to add to his already excellent between-clients sanitizing process. Dusty is fantastic. He is extremely talented and professional and I was thrilled to have him do my wedding makeup and hair. He came right on time with his assistance and was so friendly from the get go. He comes with a WAGON of makeup and tools. Much of his stuff was top of line stuff (I think he used Chanel foundation). And he's so detailed and deliberate with everything. The only slight disappointment was that my curls did not last long. I know it's humid in Hawaii, but the curls fell out pretty quickly and I wonder if more or better hairspray would have helped. His makeup style seems more on the natural side which is lovely. So while my skin looked absolutely flawless and he did a great job at attaching every single fake eyelash, I would have liked a little more color to pop in photos. I probably should have said something but I don't know much about makeup. When he saw my Dad, he immediately walked over and sprayed down some flyaways. Pretty funny to see my 70 year old Dad get hairsprayed for probably the first time in his life. He also curled my 5 years old flower girl's hair at her last minute request and offered it for free (though we gave him money for it anyway). All in all, Dusty is fantastic. Yelppers, you've done it again! Thanks to Yelp I found myself a WONDERFUL hair and make-up stylist for my destination wedding in Maui. I had contacted a number of differnt people but Dusty was the first to reply. Not only that but he was very respectful when I told him that I wanted to see what other options I had. He followed up to see how my search was going but didn't pressure me into making a decision. The amazing customer service andwarmth in his texts and emails is what sold me. And I'm sure glad I went with him! Dusty showed up slighty early with his wagon in tow, which gave us plenty of time to get orgainzed and settled in to help me look my best. He asked many questions to know exactly what I wanted. He put me at ease and the conversation was awesome. I felt like my long-time buddy was doing my hair and make up...that's how easy he is to talk to. My hubby and I decided to elope in Maui which meant I didn't have my sisters, mom or bestie to help me into my dress...no problem! Dusty said that he was there for as long as I needed him. It's difficult to plan for a destination wedding because you can only make decisions based off vendor portfolios. I tried three different, local hair and makeup artists in San Diego, because I was planning on taking a team with me, but was disappointed with the outcomes of the trial runs. I happened upon Dusty's portfolio and immediately fell in love with his work. When I made contact, he demonstrated immediate professionalism. On the big day, there was a storm on Maui so the location of the wedding was changed to a covered location outside. Dusty kept me cool as a cucumber despite all the last minute drama. It was rainy and extremely humid which is the perfect recipe for droopy hair and a melty face, but Dusty was ready and gave me plenty of touch up supplies. I wore a princess ball gown complete with an extra large petticoat. (Dusty even helped me get dressed! He tied my corset tighter than the bridal boutique employees). Although I loved my dress, it was an oven. I don't think I've ever sweat so much in my whole life. After the ceremony, I went for a quick bathroom break to survey the damage, but much to my surprise, MY MAKEUP WAS STILL PERFECT!! All I had to refresh was my lipgloss, but my hair and makeup were still flawless :). Dusty is not only talented, but he is one of the nicest people I've met. Firstly, his experience has both breadth and depth. Just ask him where he has worked and all he has accomplished, it is truly amazing. Secondly, Dusty is of amazing character. Oh my gosh, words can't even describe how incredibly amazing Dusty and Blaine were. They were so patient with us and so understanding. It was some major chaos that they got thrown into and Dusty and Blaine both were so kind about everything. They came to the venue for my brothers wedding to do maid of honor (me), mother of groom, two bridesmaids and flower girl. Im VERY particular about my hair and make up and thats why I chose Dusty. The rooms were so tiny that they had to work in but they made it work. At one point we even had to move to another room after Dusty and Blaine had already set up. The bride wanted us all together and Dusty was so incredibly kind to her. Dusty and Blaine never acted annoyed and never showed any sign of frustration. These two are so professional, yet so much fun. We laughed a lot and it was needed so badly today with all the stress of planning the wedding. Dusty and Blaine made us forget all the stress and made us feel so special. They really took such good care of all of us. The biggest deal to me was my mom because she was so stressed. She planned the entire wedding and had a lot going on. My mom was SO happy with her hair and make up. That was just one of a million kind gestures these guys did that they weren't paid to do but did it because they care and are incredibly sweet. Another amazing thing these two did.. I had gotten a spray tan at some place I had never gone to and I had few spots that looked bad that I was worried about. Dusty made them disappear and touched them up. That was so above and beyond and it made me feel so much better. Right before pictures he touched us all up and made sure we looked okay. He gave me something to blot my face throughout the night and even gave me a lip stain and gloss to use throughout the night because I didn't have one. If I could thank Dusty and Blaine a million times I would. I will never use anyone else ever again. They are so incredibly amazing and they were sooo sweet.
