At the same time I want to rave about how wonderful this stay was. A beautiful hidden gem located in Hana. There is an option of staying at the bungalow or at the guest house. We stayed at the bungalow in June for our upcoming 1 year wedding anniversary, the surroundings were breath taking. A time warp into the jungles of Maui. The bunglow is better suited for couples, it has one bed, a jetted tub, and the tub is located on the patio. Although there are no privacy windows surrounding the patio, you will feel very comfortable because of how high up you are in the bungalow and the number of tropical foliage surrounding the bungalow. Picture a 600 sq ft tree house for grown ups. As ironic as this may sound, a five star hotel normally would not have any critters running around, but I give this place a 5 star rating for the taste of serenity that I have not experienced at any other hotel before. Here in beautiful Hana, you get the true experience of sharing with nature. At night the geckos come out from the rafters of the bungalow and you share the home with the geckos. At night you hear them running across the glass. You also learn survival skills of turning off all lights in the bungalow and leaving on the magic moonlight switch on the patio to lure the bugs and geckos to one side of the home to feed the geckos. If you can live with the geckos and bugs, this is as close to heaven you can get. Without glass windows on the patio, it is instead covered by netting that allows the sounds of nature to come through, you can hear the ocean waves from coast of Hana Beach at night. In the morning you can hear the birds chirping. The short bursts of pouring Maui rain can also be heard and is a calming sound. The laundry machine is outdoors. You share with the guest house. The guest house is quite a distance from the bungalow and you do feel like you're alone even if you are on the same lot. The kitchen is stocked with all the cookingware you may need if you want to cook, dishes, utensils, and dining ware. The bungalow even has a coffee maker, toaster, and stove. In the garden patio, there is a barbecue that you can use. You will have to bring a bag of bbq coals with you unless the previous guest left some behind. The room also comes with a small radio with cd player and some Hawaiian CD's. This might sound cheesy now listening to Hawaiian music in Hawaii, but while you are staying there experiencing the rain, nature, and that feeling of bliss inside you, the Hawaiian music you listen to at the bungalow will be the sounds of serenity you will remember when you're back at your cubicle working the following week. There are a few cats that roam around the home, they live there, and if you're lucky enough, you'll get a happy greeting from them. You have to make a private reservation with the owner of this home to stay here. $225 per night plus 11.42% tax, 3 nights minimum reservation. We booked the minimum of 3 nights here to stay in Hana for the beginning of our trip in Maui and the rest of the trip in hotels in Kaanapali resort area, the first 3 nights was the highlight of our Maui trip. The reservation was a very simple process: 1) Email hamoabay@maui.net or call the owner at (808) 248-7884 asking if the dates you want to visit is available. We booked the trip around being able to stay at the bungalow, we were open to June or September. 2) After setting the available date and reserving, you provide a 50% deposit with the balance due 30 days in advance of the arrival date. You can book with your credit card over the phone. 3) You receive a confirmation receipt by email. 4) After final payment you get your secret directions to finding the hidden gem. 5) Upon arrival you call to tell the owner that you've arrived. 6) You try to cope with your much removed state from the busy life you've escaped from. 7) Day 2, you've succeeded in step 6. Now you explore Hana. 8) Day 3 (if you book only 3 days), you're now sad that you know that this is the last night at the bungalow. 9) Day 4, checking out. You're now sad you have to go and you actually say goodbye to the geckos. 10) Day 5, back at work. You think about booking a trip to Maui again to stay at the bungalow, Go for it! First of all you are tucked away in the jungle seemingly alone i.e. far from others staying there, and separated from nature by screening. Sounds of jungle birds are unreal! Since our bungalow was up in the trees and our view was of the treetops, we really felt like Tarzan and Jane. There is an Indonesian feel to the place. The shower seemed outdoors since on the lanai and surrounded by floor to ceiling screening. I loved the batik material panels surrounding the shower/tub. The breeze running through the bungalow kept them flowing. Lots of bamboo in the decor, the bed base etc. The soft lighting was accomplished by the large white paper lanterns that we've all seen before -- so charming in this setting. The owner has Kona coffee for your breakfast in the little kitchen with beautiful jungle view and brings homemade banana bread every morning. She also had a sound system on the lanai with a choice of great music. - We loved the Hawaiian sounds. Lovers who had stayed here wrote their experiences in a beautiful journal which we found ~ wonderfully romantic reading ~ we added our stories ~ Exotic, Enchanting, Unique, Unforgettable, Extraordinary!

The hosts are fantastic, and the house is perfectly located for day trips. Leandra and Pat were very helpful in finding me the perfect room for my needs and budget (the Saddle Room was sadly booked this time) and I ended up in the Lindsey Homestead. It's so cool to learn about the interesting history of this home and each room has a different story! Both rooms were a classy mix of old-school and modern - clean and simple decor keeps the whole place feeling fresh and new, despite the charming old home quirks. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone - the hosts are great and very responsive, the place is beautiful, and the location is perfect... Waimea is up in the hills so driving home after the heat of the beach was always really refreshing.

The B&B part is a spacious guest house with a living room, bedroom with small kitchenette, and an interesting bathroom arrangement...the toilet and shower are in a glassed in enlcosure looking out over the jungle! The estate is spacious and has some incredible views of the ocean and cliffs south of Hana. It's not a beach resort but there are already plenty of those around Maui and this place offers something unique and special. The best part of this place is how incredibly private it is, there are no other tourists around. Arabella is a lovely and gracious hostess who is quite interesting to talk to. There are a few minor problems...lots of gnats in the bathroom, a toaster oven that only half works, a very excitable puppy (who Arabella is happy to restrain if she gets too rambunctious), and a lack of a stove/oven. Still, there is a functioning propane grill, a rice cooker, and a microwave so it's possible to make a tasty meal for yourself on the premises, just do come prepared. These are actually relatively minor problems, I highly recommend this space and will definitely come back next time I visit Maui.

Gourmet dinners with gorgeous view at local restaurants. The night sounds of waves on the rocks is therapeutic. The Bayhouse itself is secondary to the experience but fully equipped for lounging, napping, sleeping, reading, stitching (my wife), relaxing. Do you see a theme here? Located "on the rocks of the bay" so you are up wind from everything. This means no noise at all but the sea. We even prepared a few meals in the perfectly equipped kitchen. Hana is "old Hawaii," what it was like years before noisy tourists came demanding to be entertained with silly luau's and high-rise hotels filled with mini bars. The pace is slow, the natural beauty is stunning, and there are many places to see, but if you really want to get off the grid, this is the place. If not, don't stay in Hana, and try and find your aloha somewhere else. Bayhouse Hana is one many accommodations that you'll discover on Uakea Rd. My wife and I stayed at Tuttu's House, just one house up, for a few nights and were delighted when we entered the property. It's run by husband and wife Bill and Anita, who keep the unit clean and modern. All of the appliances worked, the view from the living room is fabulous, and there's a place to sit outside to enjoy a meal or BBQ. There's an upstairs unit that is under renovation, and occupied by a quiet local tenant. Just a few other tips before I end the review... Getting to and departing Hana. There's always been two roads in and out of Hana, but the less windy road is now better paved. Unfortunately, the mini tour buses that flock to Hana daily, use this road to leave town. The road is very narrow in parts, and the tour buses don't always share it or follow driving rules. They're in a hurry to get a bus load of cranky tourists back to their resorts, giving info over their headsets, and not paying attention to oncoming traffic.The good news is that only happens during the first ten miles out of Hana, or until the road straightens out, but that can be a very stressful hour if you don't plan it right. Leave Hana in this direction early (before 9) or in the late afternoon.

Also note, just maybe 15 feet from the highway, which is not noisy at night, and you're probably out and about during the day. Heard a disturbed person shouting like mad in Hawaiian in the middle of the night which was a little nerve wracking. Sounded like they were right outside the window. Fence door locks but not the door to the room, just something to keep in mind. Definitely memorable. Makes anywhere with a bathroom door seem straight up fancy.

There was no separate sink, it's a cutaway in the wall with these items so we had to wash dishes in the bathroom. It was a descent size, we had a bathroom inside, and a lanai. Our room was next to the office and Toms room. The walls are thin. I wish there was ac. It got stuffy even with the fan and windows open. We left the front sliding door open to let in more air. There was fish washing soap but no shampoo and conditioner, so make sure you have your own or like using soft soap because that was in the shower. We were right across from the Venus pools and Tom let us know where to go. Make sure you see it. I'd stay here again. As for the bugs. Hana just has a lot of them so we got but inside and outside.

Honu Kai provides a unique yet comfortable stay. This was my first time at a b&b so I had a lot of questions. Months prior to booking, I called and texted Amy with my questions, and she always got back to me quickly. Location was great because target is only 10 min away if you need to stock up on the essentials. Lots of amazing restaurants are within 15 minutes as well. The property is so beautiful and well maintained. It truly felt like a second home. It has a peaceful and zen feeling that is extra magical at night due to the coquis. Our bed was so comfortable and our room was cleaned everyday. The fresh breakfast everyday with coffee and juice was excellent as well. The fruit was always fresh and sweet! I'm someone who appreciates quiet mornings alone so I was unsure about having breakfast with other people, but I'm so glad we did it. It's a really amazing and unique experience to sit and eat with people from all over the world! I truly miss sitting on the porch watching the birds and chickens on the lawn. What really made our experience special was Amy. She is so friendly, personable, and just a genuinely kind soul! Absolutely loved her! Our time here wouldn't have been the same without her. Unfortunately, with less than a month to go and only 4 rooms total was not able to get extra nights here. The one night we did have here was exactly like how I imagine old Hawai`i would look like. Just a short drive to downtown Kona for food and even Costco but far enough that you feel like you can disconnect. With so much shared public area and again only 4 rooms, nothing ever felt crowded. You had access to an outdoor dining area, gardens, sundeck, grill, plates, utensils, your own shelf in the fridge and even snorkel and beach gear. The only issue I had was when I used the hot tub, my eyes started stinging so not sure if it was overly chlorinated so only lasted less than 5 minutes as I kept tearing up. The rooms were comfortable, very thought out and has such nice little touches that make you feel at home. Only thing to note is since they are in such a tropical setting, they do not want you eating in your room to avoid ant infestations, etc.. Again, no big deal as they have a spacious dining area right downstairs that we had all to ourselves when we wanted to eat or snack. Innkeeper Amy was friendly, welcoming, and made sure we were taken care of. The breakfast in the morning was better than what you can get at a restaurant and the ambiance just cannot be beat. The sound of the rain while we ate our takeout dinner was so soothing and relaxing and the sound of the birds on a sunny morning paired well with that breakfast. This place was absolutely dreamy and the staff was so kind. We stayed in the cottage and really loved the privacy it offered. We had our own spacious lanai to watch the sunrise each morning. Breakfast was delicious and fresh. They made special accommodations for us vegetarians which I greatly appreciated. Coffee was so good and the view from the dining table was breathtaking. As far as location, you're definitely a little off the beaten path which is what we wanted. There are some small shops and restaurants to walk to, but for the most part you'll probably be hopping in your car to head to the beach and busier parts of the island. Hawaii is meant to be explored, no matter what inn or hotel you decide to make your home base. But Holualoa Inn is truly magical and I'll never forget my time there.

The hosts of Hawi Sugar Plantation Inn are super accommodating, kind, and readily available for questions and suggestions of things to do on the island. Do it. Go there. And prepare to fall in love with Hawi Sugar Plantation Inn.
