We had never been to the big island and really didn't know what to expect. But we started with the open water portion of our PADI certification. Our instructor, Elias, was super cool and easy going, but provided clear directions and took safety and training seriously. After certification we did another 2 tank dive with Zach and had a blast. Great diving, great staff, great experience all around, mahalo!!

Kohala Divers delivers! What a great experience for me and my daughter. They took care of everything, and brought us to the best dive sites for our 2-tank dive. Our guide, Jonah, took great care of us and showed us the best time underwater. All of the crew were friendly and helpful. This is our second time diving with Kohala and we will be back as they make diving easy and fun.

Just got back from another 2 weeks of diving with what have become our good friends at Kohala. Can't say enough good things about this company. They really understand customer service and are absolutely all about safety. They do such a good job of putting the divers together in small groups by certification and experience. They now us very well so we always get plenty of bottom time with them and get to explore some of their favorite "secret' spots. once again shout out to Captains Ty and Keith, and DMs Noam, Elias, James, Tyler and Max. Can't wait to see this crew again next summer.

One of my pledges this year is to complete reviews of dive sites and dive shops. Kohala Divers is my new favorite dive shop on the Big Island! Making reservations with them is a breeze and kamaa'ina discount is available. The check in process the day of the dive is quick, and the distance from the store to the boat slip is within walking distance. The boat captain, Ty, and crew are friendly and professional- getting you to the dive sites in safety and comfort. Their boat has two mounted showers for you to take a quick rinse and get the salt off of you after the dive. If you end up in a nearby seat, keep an eye out for inconsiderate fellow divers. In their haste to rinse off, sometimes they don't pay attention to where their shower water goes after it hits them and you can get wet again! The underwater topography is interesting and different from a typical Kona dive site- lots of caverns and lava tubes typical of Shark's Cove on Oahu. The fauna is slightly different as well. Often what's common up north in Kohala is rare in Kona, and vice-versa. KD will also rent tanks and weights for divers who want shore dive. You can even get a 10-tank fill card. There's a great dive site right outside the harbor KD uses where my group has found some painted and decorated nudibranches I haven't seen before! KD's best feature is my favorite dive guide, Sandy W! She moved to KD from another dive shop. Very knowledgeable and another nudibranch enthusiast, diving with Sandy is like diving with another dive buddy! All in all, a total pleasure to be diving with such a great dive shop! When are we diving Kohala again? Will return to dive again and definately recommend!

Nice little local shop. Very friendly and helpful! If you're not into the big touristy kind of places this shop is perfect!

Flipper, Chuck and Captain Stephen are the best. Amazing turtle dive. And the recommendation to get bacon at Mai Grille was spot on.

The woman on the phone argued the price and told me it would be double what the site said. When I called back later to see if maybe someone else would pick up and help me, I mentioned I had called in earlier. The line went silent. Then she told me they were "not currently scheduling any tours". She was perfectly willing to book one when we called the first time. In short, this was handled in a very rude manner on their end. Both the magazine ad and their site are false advertising.

We set off on Thursday, January 14th, under mostly sunny skies, gentle winds, and smooth calm waters. Once at the harbor we met Captain William, and his first mate, Chris. Both, well seasoned and professional, William follows the whales, in Alaska in Summer, while Chris does wildlife bus tours in Alaska. Both then head to Hawaii, for winter migration. Once aboard the Comfortable LavaKai, we headed out of port. Within seconds of heading out of to sea, we had our first sighting, the adventure had begun! First, a couple of blowhole water spouts, then so many more sightings, too numerous to count! Captain William, and Chris were as stoked as we all were! We experienced a full body out of the water Breech, a 40x tail fop, and even a cow & calf with escort family pod cruise along side of us! The tour was awe inspiring, a memory to last a lifetime! The boat, The LavaKai, was clean and comfortable, we were treated like guests, with fresh baked banana bread and shortbread served on a silver tray, as well as juice, water and chocolate covered macadamia nuts. We were very impressed by their hospitality. William and Chris are both following their bliss and it shows, they have a genuine love for sharing the majesty that the humpback whales display. We felt like partners of an adventure, rather than just another ticketed customer on a scripted tour. Highly recommend for the experience, the hospitality, and the professionalism. When on the Big Island during the winter migration, Kohala Tours, with Captain William and Chris is a Must Do Adventure! Don't miss out...

We wanted an intimate experience rather than being with a big boat filled with strangers. This was perfect! Captain Steve was precisely on time for meeting us at the dock and beginning our sail. He and his 1st mate, Sarah, were attentive but not intrusive. They made us feel welcome, served us cold beverages and pupus. My daughter experienced a little seasickness and Sarah quietly noticed and brought her some ginger which helped to calm her belly. By the end of the cruise, my daughter was only wishing we had another hour to sail! I would highly recommend this small family owned company the next time you want to go out on the ocean. Their boat was super clean and well maintained. Those things matter! I will definitely use this company again. I am already looking forward to whale season! As a matter of fact, I loved it so much in March, I went on another one right after!! We saw so many incredible whales!!! This time, Andrew actually held the boat out there a bit longer as he spotted another whale!! We even saw a ton of adorable spinner dolphins gyrating out of the water! The highlight was a mama humpback with her 2-4 week old newborn calf. Why did he know that?? The size. They grow from 1500 lbs to 3000 lbs the first month!! They eat about 50 gallons of milk per day.
