We drove an hour to visit here yesterday and it wasn't open even though it says open everyday. We left and came back a little while later but they still were not open. There's no signage or social media post about it either. There were other customers waiting around as well but everyone gave up after 30 minutes when no one came. Very unprofessional. read more

Neat place with a lot of variety in terms of things there. While the owner carries a lot of games for newer platforms (specifically Nintendo Switch), he does have a decent amount of retro games and consoles as well (I'll put a list down below of all the platforms I recall them stocking). He also has gaming accessories like controllers, as well as just general game related merchandise. One cool thing about the place is that (at least for all the video games) the owner puts the price tag of how much GameStop would charge you for the product right above what his price for the product is, which is always cheaper. It probably won't be any more than a few bucks, but it's still nice to know that (not taking into account special sales or deals that GameStop occasionally does) you're getting a better deal here than at such a well known and established store like GameStop. The only thing to note though is I believe all of Kontraband's stock is used and not new (however I'm not 100% on that). So some games might not come in their original case, or even have a case (though I think there are more games in their original cases then there are ones without or in a generic case). But I feel like that's a pretty insignificant detail to most people shopping for games, and a worthwhile trade-off in exchange for getting a cheaper game. One downside though compared to a bigger game store like GameStop is the lack of stock available. While there definitely is a lot of stuff (especially considering how modestly sized the store is and how, as of when this review was made, it opened just over a week ago), they're definitely a lot more limited on products compared to bigger stores. However stores like GameStop tend to generally focus on stocking only new products, whereas Kontraband (as I mentioned) has a little bit of everything, old and new. I also think some of the merchandise that they sell is not the kind of things you'd see at GameStop, so you might come across something neat that you wouldn't be able to find at GameStop. But it is something to keep in mind that if you're looking for something particular, you might wanna call first to see if he has what you're looking for. The owner was really nice and friendly, and was very good about making me feel like I got a good deal for what I bought and sold. I came in to sell some games, but I looked on Ebay before hand so I had an idea of what kind of deal I would be getting with what he offered in exchange, and I was happily surprised with how much he gave me for them, compared to what I was expecting I'd get for selling them (considering he has to sell them for a profit). I wasn't sure how likely it would be that I would come back, so I wasn't sure if I should exchange the games for cash or in-store credit. But he let me take all the time I needed to browse around the store in case there was anything I might wanna get so I could get a better deal for my games while I was there. I ended up finding Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team for the GBA (loving it by the way), and he worked it out so a portion of my exchange would be in-store credit to pay for the game. It wasn't a perfect match with the price, but since it was so close, he knocked $1 off the original price so I could pay for it with just the partial in-store credit. And I don't know if he was offering this to all customers, or just paying customers, or even if this was just a temporary thing he was doing to commemorate his store's recent opening, but the owner had this stash of candy in one of the corners of his store, and he was offering all customers to take a candy if they wanted, which I thought was a really generous courtesy. From what I remember, there were full sized boxes of candy that you might pay a dollar or 2 for somewhere, and he was giving them away for free! Again, don't know how much of a staple this practice is with his store, or if it was literally just the first dozen or so customers he got would get candy and that's it, but still thought that was a nice perk for shopping there, and perhaps a sign that he'll do other fun things for future holidays or events. To sum it up, the biggest thing holding the store back from peak perfection at this moment in time is the limited selection of items. But considering it hasn't even been open for 2 weeks, I feel like there's definitely time for this issue to be rectified. And as the only game store in Corvallis that carries retro gaming items (and a fairly diverse array at that), and knowing that you're better off buying any game there than at GameStop, I think it's off to a great start, and would definitely recommend it to anyone, and especially those interested in games for older consoles.
