We walked in and seated ourselves since no one greeted us for a while after we walked in. A waiter walked up to us, made a rude face and was silent until we asked if it was okay if we sat there and he responded, "Um, can I help you?" After saying we just wanted to get a drink, he laughed condescendingly and said that they were closed; it was Christmas Day. I responded that there were a lot of people in there so we weren't aware. He then laughed at us again and said he didn't know why there were so many people, which didn't make any sense. But we could go to the bar, if we really wanted to stay. Wow. We walked out feeling pretty upset on our holiday. Thanks for the worst Christmas Day experience ever.

My beef bourguignon was very salty and didn't make me miss my recent lack of red meat. The service? Slightly better than average. I attribute that to the practically empty restaurant on both occasions though. The prices? Slight above what they should be, IMHO. But that voucher was fantastic. Almost £60 off your bill is nothing to sniff at. Brighton Marina is 99% chains, so you could do much worse than having a meal or two at Cafe Rouge if you're around these parts...

The decor is traditional and I always think the inside of them look like a sepia photograph. The downside to Cafe Rouge is that it is expensive for what it is. I got a taste of my mother's moules et frites and they were very tasty. My steak was rather flavourless and if you wanted any sauce it would be an additional £2; seems a bit much to me. The staff were friendly, if a bit slow considering when I went it was not very busy at all. There's not a lot really to complain about other than it being (in my opinion) overpriced, but also not much to rave about either which is why it stays in the average star ratings for me.

My better half said that his fries were the best he had in Brighton. I did not try them, but he referred to them as crisp and nice. They had some rosemary planted outside, but I dont think that would go too well with my bacon and ketchup, so the plants are still there (even if some green stuff would have been lovely on my sandwhich). The bread was good by the way, but I had to leave more than half of it. Other itmes on the menu looked good as well from what I could tell. They have some wines, some beers and nice coffee as well. From what I saw through the windows, the inside area looked well planned out design wise with wooden tables and chair. Price wise I guess its a little over average, but for a quick meal and a coffee, very manageable. Service was quick and nice. If ever in Brighton again, I would not hesitate to sit here for a couple of hours, sipping some cider and wathing people walk by. (Pardon any errors, English is not my first language).

It's latest reinvention is as Grow 40 and when other lunch spots were full, Grow 40 could offer us a table so we jumped at the chance. We were seated upstairs right at the back which is a very informal area, maybe better suited for coffee as opposed to lunch, but cosy none the less. There were four of us, plus the little man, so it was a bit of a squeeze around the small table, but we managed with a bit of juggling. As is the current fashion, Grow 40 favours local, independent produce, but unlike many other restaurants, they actually grow some of their own produce on their roof garden. Unfortunately, they don't have highchairs which meant it was a little difficult for me to eat my lunch while balancing a inquisitive one year old on my lap. It's quite unusual in family-friendly Brighton to find a restaurant that doesn't cater well for small people, and the lack of facilities was a surprise. I ordered a burger, and I have to say it was one of the best i've had a in a long time. Moist, flavoursome, well seasoned and tasty. The fries were a little salty but were also tasty. My partner had the fish and chips and was also very impressed - the fish was very fresh and not too oily. Our dining companions had the chorizo open sandwich and seemed to enjoy. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the vibe here is nice. I would like to try their breakfast menu as it features both lobster and champagne! They have a private members wine club which sounds intriguing but something I probably won't get to try out for a few years now! My only complaint is the lack of children's facilities. I'm not expecting toys and a kid's menu as it's not that kind of place, but changing facilities and a highchair should be available.

It has a typically French feel to the place and the food just enhances that. A very tidy menu with a choice for all. The portions may seem a little small but this is French cuisine and it is also reflected in the price. The best part of this little gem is the value for money. There are three options on the menu and the dearest is £7.95 for a three course menu with add-ons depending on your choice of dish. A 3 course meal for 2 with 4 glasses of wine, 1 sparkling water and 2 coffees came to £38.40. I really like this place and it has made my short list of best places to dine in the area.

I one foul swoop it has leapfrogged its way in to my all-time top three. Yes, its a little on the expensive side, but this is certainly a case of getting what you pay for. We were given an amuse bouche of duck terrine, a really nice taster and a change from the usual small soup! For starter I went for the crab raviolli in crab and corriander broth - a combination of really delicate flavours. However, it was the main course that was the true champion of this meal. Trio of pork featuring pancetta wrapped loin on creamed potato - cooked very rare so that it was completely pink in the middle - I have never eaten pork like this before but it was so tender and delicious it was a delight. Pork cheek that just melted in the mouth, and pork belly, again superbly cooked. It was truely one of those dishes that has kept me smiling for days. I was a true piggy (pardon the pun) having a dessert and a cheese board - well, it was my birthday! However, I was finally beaten by the complimentary petite fours that were presented on a plate with "Happy Birthday" written across it in chocolate sauce -the waitress was kind enough to wrap these up for me to take home as I just couldn't manage another mouthful by this point! What's really awesome is no matter how many you pick, they start you with an amusebouche and end with a small palette cleanser before dessert. It's like 2 free courses! The food was excellent. For starters, we had fried mackerel and the special, which happened to be pan fried scallops. That was followed up by the lamb and the sirloin, both of which were perfectly cooked. We especially both liked the purees that accompanied the meat. Finally, for dessert we shared the strawberries and clotted cream ice cream. Yum! When we arrived, there were virtually no other diners in the room, so we had amazing service (very attentive!) and our pick of tables. I'd highly recommend them and hope to go back someday!

As the name should have suggested, this is actually very much a French restaurant as well as a cafe bistro. As I sat down to drink my delightfully abrasive cappuccino (£2), I couldn't help but notice how many of the Mange Tout customers were tucking in to a generous sized bowl of moules et frites (mussels and chips to you and I). While not much of a mussels fan, I certainly am a fan of Steak, and just so you know, it was cooked to medium-rare perfection. Certainly a brilliant lunchtime spot for anybody looking for a well cooked continental meal.

Its a fair walk from the center of town but well worth the trek. Its a gastro pub as it should be in my opinion; non pretentious, friendly and comfortable. The whole place has that Parisian bistro feel which I love. The place recently won a 'Bib Gourmand' award - so when my starter, trio of paortland crab with crab souffle, crab bisque & hot crab toast arrived I knew why. It was presented on a black slate tile which looked amazing and tasted even better. For the main I went for the haunch of venison which can sometimes be a touch too gamey but it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. We had starter and main each, a bottle of white wine (plus a glass of red with my venison) and coffees (mine was Irish) and the bill came to around £75. All Gingerman restaurants give you a stamp on a reward card for every £25 you spend though, once you fill up your card you get a two course meal for one to use at any of their places. The food is not a long way off Michelin star quality in my opinion so I think its extremely reasonable here.

I've scanned the menu and noticed that they offer a mouth-watering selection of salads, baguettes and hot sandwiches - including the classic Croque Monsieur. I've tried and loved the salmon fish-cakes with french fries and lime and coriander mayonnaise. For some reason though, whenever I sit down on one of their comfy, red and white chairs, take a sip of coffee and pick up the menu - I always find myself dreaming of the thick, french onion soup with a gruyere crouton floating on top of a bowl of caramelised onions and rich beef stock.
