I want to start off by saying that I've been going to Kool Hair for 6 years and the quality recently has gone down. What was once a good quality, personal haircut as become a way for him to make as much money as possible. I went to get a haircut and perm but I could tell he was rushing my haircut so he could finish cutting and perming my hair in under 30 minutes. During my haircut, he didn't even let me show a picture of how I wanted my top cut which led to my hair being way to short and thin. Oh and he LOVES his thinning shears which for me, are inconsistent with him as he sometimes takes too much off. Ashton triple, even quadruple books which led to subpar service. One of my perm rods came out and I held it in my hand for a good 15 minutes because I wanted to see if him or his helper would notice.( they didn't as they were tending to the other 3 clients). I have been going to Kool Hair to get my haircut for 4 years. And every visit, Ashton did not disappoint. Before getting my haircut, I would show him a picture of how I want my hair cut and he would make sure to ask check-up regularly to make sure I felt comfortable about the length. I've had my hair dyed several times before too and he would give me great color suggestions that he thought would fit me. There was one time I wanted my hair dyed maroon red/brown tone and the color turned out SO well. All of my friends or even people I met on the streets would compliment my hair color and would ask where I went to get it done! (I attached a photo). This is the worst haircut I've gotten since boot camp. Bad on me for waiting 35 minutes past my appointment time after watching how he cut the four guys in front of me, but it never occurred to me that he would have the same approach to my hair. I wanted about six inches removed for a simple, above the shoulder bob. He put the cape on, combed out my hair and started one-handed dry cutting and it didn't get better from there. The way he pulled the scissors as he cut kept pulling a couple hairs at a time and really hurt. Less than 10 minutes and $45 later I walked out in shock. At least it isn't as short as I asked for and I can have it fixed by a professional. Never again. read more

as someone who likes to experiment with haircuts, i always find myself returning to kool hair. ashton is incredibly skilled and knows the latest hair trends. i have repeatedly visited this hair salon throughout the years, and the layers that he cuts into my hair always come out defined. i always bring a reference picture, and he manages to cut it accurately after analyzing the picture for a second. in terms of the environment of the hair salon itself, it is a simple salon, located next to a subway and close to downtown edmonds. i believe that i will continue coming to ashton for my haircuts in the future! read more

I've been here twice and had a great experience both times. The first time I needed to layer and "thin out" my long thick hair, and Ashton did exactly what I needed. I've been to a few places in the greater Seattle area but he is the only one who could truly get my hair thin enough to my satisfaction, and without creating a bunch of flyaways that sometimes hair stylists do when they use the thinning knife scissor tool. My hair also had a good shape which held for quite a while until my next appointment. The second time, I asked for a wavy perm. It was my first perm ever (!) and I basically just wanted a hairstyle that would be easy to take care of. I showed Ashton an inspiration photo and he helped me make some modifications that would be easier for me to manage, and I'm so glad I listened because every morning now it's been so fast for me to get ready and out the door. The haircut was very solid. What I asked for and seemed like a reasonable price for the area - $43 (after tax). Note -- Price seems to depend on cut and style. I did make an appointment and had to wait about 20 min or so still, but overall a positive experience. I was able to make a same day appointment during a weekday. Also, I specifically looked for someone who knows how to cut Asian hair -- hair texture matters! I also don't like getting "upsold" so appreciated not having hair products or other add ons pushed. If you're looking for a straightforward no fuss no frills kind of haircut this seems like a good place, although I think they also do coloring, digital perms, etc. but did not get those services. read more

Ok, being here the 2nd time around. I will just say - I left with a bitter taste. There was not a lot of staff around as before - two hair cut/stylist overall and one lady that helps around. I had made an appointment but when I showed up, I had to wait another 15-20mins. The owner a.k.a Ashton, does do a good job it seems but, his business etiquette if lacking. He will try to guilt trip or up sell you with suggesting a perm. Also, even though the place say they accept credit card - he will ask you if you have cash. Also, I didn't see a menu on prices anywhere still... Considering I had a men's haircut without a shampoo and had to pay basically $34/35 for the cut - but then told if I had cash. This left a bad taste. I thought maybe I get a discount with cash. However, I couldn't even confirm that as no receipt was provided except a Thank you. Lastly, I did purchase a $5-$10 mark up hair wax but still no receipt; what if I need to return/exchange? (I did a price check afterwards so that is how I realize it was marked up by about that much). Again, no receipt and if you look at other reviews... you can draw the fact that he likes to convince you for a perm (up sell). Seriously, this confirmed for me to reconsider elsewhere. I say this place could've been better on the customer service and professionalism/business etiquette - Oh heck - the fact that they seem to always be booked is because there is only 1-2 people cutting - having people needing to book is pointless with the staffing. It should just be walk-in. Due to this and having people wait after an appoint has been made. I have change my "could've been better" to "not good". First pics on the day he butchered my hair. Do not let him touch your hair unless you're his only client! He worked on me while another sat in his other chair. Granted she was there first but why double book?!The last two are a month later and look at the short hairs I have sticking up! My layers are choppy and messy and I have full volume mullet unless I add heat to my hair! I have to damage it just to make it look semi presentable. It may just be hair to some but I grew my hair out for years and now am stuck with these short nubs all through out my WHOLE HEAD. My hair touched my bum and all I wanted were long layers and to fix my bangs. He doesn't listen to what you actually want and does whatever he deems fit. It broke my heart and I hate looking at my hair now. I usually just pull it back. It's going to take years before I can undo what he's done to my hair. I had called in to make an appointment for a haircut and coloring. Unfortunately. The day of, I was running behind. They were gracious enough to let me come in anyways. The hairstylist was busy going from chair to chair. By the time he got to me, I told him I didn't want to color my hair, just cut it. He proceeded to tell me how he had set the time apart to color my hair and give me a guilt trip about changing my mind. I reluctantly agreed to color my roots. While I waited, he proceeded to go from chair to chair and I thought: "did he not say he set the time apart for my hair?" Finally, he washed my hair and cut it. The haircut was NOT what I asked for and was shorter than I wanted. He didn't even blow dry my hair and charged me $105. I am never going back there again. read more

I came in as a walk-in with thick and unruly long hair (waist length). I came at around 3-3:30 but was asked if I could come back at 5 bc he had a line of others also waiting. I came back at 5 and again, there were still people waiting and also getting their hair cut. I waited an hour to get my haircut even though I was told to come earlier, I think due to walk-ins and appointments coinciding too much. HOWEVER, I feel like the wait was incredibly worth it. Someone had an appointment at 6:15 and Ashton JUST started to do my hair at 6. He said that he would only take 20 minutes to do my hair so that he could help her next and he accomplished that exactly on time. I asked for a wolf/hush cut. He was a little rough on the hair because he was in a rush, but it wasn't too bad. He had to brush out my hair which had a few little hidden knots, thin it out, and make layers on my extremely thick hair in a short time span. The results were exactly how I wanted it to look like as shown by the reference photos and I have never felt more confident and pretty in my hair. Ashton's extremely talented and precise at what he does and all that for $40! The only flaw is scheduling issues. It's confusing to know who goes first because there are scheduled appointments AND walk-ins that go on simultaneously. It looks like sometimes Ashton may take a walk-in before an appointment, or take a later walk-in before an earlier walk-in. It's overwhelming and confusing BUT again, I'd say it's worth the wait. I would come back again because I'm very happy with his talents and his personality. He's somehow able to still remain calm and friendly as he's short on time. read more

I've been here a few times and had a great experience. I called kind of last minute but he has always been accommodating and fit me in. Originally I went in for a cut but he was able to also dye my hair as well. It's been hard for me to find time to get it done or get scheduled at other places but he was able to accommodate. I honestly had a lot of trouble finding an affordable salon that could take care of my naturally black hair and lighten it without doing a whole lot of damage to my sensitive scalp. He's friendly, knowledgeable and helped me achieve the hair color that I've always wanted. He's done root touch ups, hair bleaching and color toning and always does his a fantastic job. He's super, duper busy though so I recommend scheduling an appointment in advance if you'd like to work with him. He will sometimes be working with multiple people at once, but always comes back to check up on me while I have color, etc in my hair. Ashton is awesome! I tried to color my own hair brown at home using box dye, but it failed miserably. My roots ended up dark brown while the rest of my head was black (my virgin hair). After talking through my options with Ashton, we decided to go lighter and he attempted to blend my roots with the rest of the color. I have long, thick Asian hair, so I had to wait a little longer for the color to show up but he was so patient. He also recommended some adjustments to my haircut (even out the layers and add more texture) which came out beautifully. I'm very happy with the resulting cut and color and will definitely be back! I called for an appointment and he fit me in right away. My hair was long to my lower back, dry, tons of split ends, and looking life-less. I asked the owner if he could give me some layers from my shoulders to my back and to keep the length. He gave me exactly what I wanted! My bffl and I came with tens of photos for a cut and color and were hesitant at first due to how simple Ashton made our requests sound. I had one highlight my entire life so I was very anxious to have my entire head colored.
