Visited at low tide today, just a day trip to a park for a "hike" and some outside time for kids 9 and 4. Parked in the lot- plenty of space at 10:30 am - used Discover Pass on rear view mirror. Walked in a small loop down to the shore, kids loved shells, crabs, oysters, water, moving rocks and logs (to see the crabs). Walked back up with some complaining but it was short enough we could see the parking fence before kiddo gave up. Then we had a snack at the play area, let the kids climb and play, and went back home for lunch. Water was not on at play area yet, much to my 4 yr olds disappointment. Can't wait to come back! read more

Never met a park I didn't think was 5* and the recently renovated Kopachuck SP delivers. New lodge, trails, and renovated access. I heard the campgrounds were eliminated in the renovation. Just another 5* park in Washington. read more

We have a state park pass and we were near this state park on a recent outing to the Gig Harbor area and so it made perfect sense to go over to Kopachuck and take a look. The GPS took us to the ranger station and someone that worked there got us turned around and we made a left then at the turn off and went to the main parking area. It wasn't too terribly busy which was nice. We went on a pretty easy hike down to the beach that is within the park and enjoyed the views of Puget Sound. It was kind of an inlet that I haven't been to before but it was very scenic and all around a very pleasant detour back home. Definitely a nicer state park that the state has to offer. read more

I'm still in awe at the beauty of this park. My experience with beaches is more of the traditional sandy beach that you find in Southern California. So when I stumbled across this one that is surrounded by lush forest and has rocks all around the shore, it was a new experience for me. There's a good sized parking lot at the entrance of the park where you pay your fee. (There is not a booth to handle a transaction, rather you pay in an envelope or via phone. They also accept the Discovery Pass.) Once parked, you can choose what trail you'd like to follow through the trees. All the ones we tried ended up at the beach or in a picnic area. The beach is covered with beautiful rocks and sand dollars, crabs and geo ducks. I'd never seen so many in one place before! On the walk back up, we encountered a baby deer running full speed down the trail toward us. I'm not sure who was more startled; us or the deer. When it saw us, it stopped briefly and then darted off into the trees. Poor thing! I loved this park and am excited to come back again and visit! read more

We went during high tide but saw a gal shoveling for clams and oysters. We saw oyster shells but could not find much. The water was too cold and the rocks hurt my poor foot. Perhaps come on a day where it is -1 for intertidal zone. Bathroom was clean. Bring your discover pass. You do have to hike down to the beach. I was not able to find any sand dollars either. read more

Found this state park on our way to dinner in Gig Harbor. Such a beautiful, lush park! This is a day use park and charges a fee ($10), or Discovery Pass. There is a nice large parking lot near the bathrooms. The bathrooms were clean and had flush toilets. We walked down to the beach and what a gorgeous walk it was! So many trees and ferns...just super lush. Since we came on a Wednesday afternoon, it wasn't very busy. There are benches on the trails which may come in handy on the way back up, since it's all uphill. There are quite a few picnic tables on the bank of the beach. Each have their own trail up to the main trail, keeping them pretty private. Since we came in the afternoon, we missed out on the low tide pool finds. Would love to come back to check those out. Loved this park...would highly recommend! read more

My Brother / Best Friend Ryan and I went to this park earlier this month to chill out and watch a beautiful sunset. It is a lovely park. Ryan had told me that there was an "easy" hike from the parking lot to the beach, but Ryan's "easy" and my "easy" are quite a bit different! Suffice it to say I would not wear flip flops again for this hike, and I would bring my hiking boots next time. Even though it is a very brief hike, there were some roots, some mildly rough-ish terrain, and some unexpected elevation changes on this hike. The beach was not very crowded, just about 5 or 6 other people there. We saw a couple of Mormon missionaries walk past us. Interesting place for them to hang out, I've never seen them at a beach park before. Maybe they were just enjoying the natural beauty like the rest of us. I kind of half-hoped that they would come over and talk to us - my ex-fiance is a Mormon, so I was anticipating a lively discussion about the ins and outs of Mormon theology, which I actually find quite fascinating, although I was not going to convert. However, they strolled past us two separate times without giving us a sideways glance, and I don't think Ryan would've been too happy with me if I would've purposely engaged the missionaries, so I let it be. The flip flops that I wore that day are actually waterproof, so I got to put my feet in the water - one of my favorite things to do in life. The water was cold and delightful on that hot summer evening. We caught a very lovely sunset. I'm very happy with our experience at this peaceful park, and I would return again any time. read more

This park is a hidden gem! We love visiting state parks and have been to pretty much all of them within the area. This one was a favorite! Beautiful landscape, trails, and a wonderful beach area. My kids could have played for hours. Oyster shells, sand dollars, agates, and a view worth a million bucks. I went here for the first time a few days ago. I just fell in love with the beautiful trees, ferns and foliage. It is so beautiful and lush. Okay, I'm not from Washington. I'm a California girl. I'm not used to all the green! I hurt my ankle a couple of days prior so I was not able to do any hiking. My foot was badly bruised and swollen so all I was able to do was to walk down to the bay. It was low tide so we were able to do some exploring along the shore. I definitely want to come back and spend more time hiking. read more

Plenty of parking but be prepared for a hike to the beach. There's trails throughout, but highly recommend going towards the stairs to get to the beach it felt like such a maze before we found it. Wished there was some kind of map or signage to make it easier to get to the beach. Not a sandy beach a lot of rocks but there are cool little things to see in the water. I wouldn't swim in it but many people were. read more

So this park is pretty cool. It's tucked away on the shores of Gig Harbor. After driving by the signs a bunch of times, we finally decided to check this park out. It happened to be a gorgeous early Spring afternoon and boy did we enjoy the park! There are a few trails down to the waterfront from the parking, though I suggest walking down the "service access road" since it's the easiest walk and widest and there are a few that don't connect to the beach as easily. The views are gorgeous from the water and you can see a little island which it seemed some of the boats were heading toward. Once on the beach there was definitely some wildlife around, as we found lots of little crabs along the water. I also think I saw someone leaving with a bucket full of something. If you're in the area and looking for a gorgeous spot to spend a day, check this place out! read more

What a beautiful park! It was approximately 2 miles of total trails (which is on the park's website), so if you are looking for a long vigorous hike, you should check the website first. We came into the park for a bit during the day to go down to the beach, which is supposed to be beautiful. I only did the Beach Loop trail, so I will limit my review to that portion. The trail was easy to find and well-marked, no trouble finding it. The hike down to the beach was pretty easy, with some points even having stairs. We had a person with a hurt ankle, and they were able to handle the trail slowly, without too many issues. Once we got to the bottom, the view did not disappoint. Luckily, it was a really clear day, so we could see the snow-capped Olympic mountains--AWESOME! We saw several different species of diving ducks/sea-birds and even saw one harbor seal, who promptly went under water when we tried to take a picture. I should definitely come back at low tide to explore a bit more at a future date. The restrooms were cleaned and well-stocked in the day use area. I will be back!! read more

Back to our favorite sea star place! We didn't see any large sea stars with the -2.4 tide today. In my previous review we saw over 20 large ones in one visit. Rumor has it the sea star wasting syndrome (which is plaguing the Pacific Northwest coast) has made it's way to Kopachuck State Park. Super sad if that's the case. We looked hard and found one itty bitty little orange guy the size of a silver dollar hanging out. Crossing our fingers they make a come back. We have the most luck in the Mar/Apr months here. We're going to try again in the new year and report back. Kiddos still had a blast in the sun turning over rocks looking for crabs. Love this place for a wonderful family picnic. read more

Glorious trees! Fat, skinny, tall, short, knobbly, mushroom covered, bug eaten and bored through, stumps with new growth on top, rotting, living, fallen, leaning etc! Great forest to view a bit of it all. Beach and the view is beautiful. Picturesque and the small hike down and up isn't bad...uphill may be difficult for some or for very little ones. We enjoyed climbing about like monkeys and beach combing. read more

There were not a lot of people there when we went which was awesome. I assume this would be a great place to get away for quiet contemplation of life in the autumn and early winter. Have at it! Just pay the darn park fee, or better yet- buy a Discovery Pass. read more

Wow, beautiful park and beach area! So many different trails you can take down to the beach. We went with our 2 year old toddler while it is a tiny bit steep (for a short period of time) on the way back, it was very easy to walk down to the beach. Water is very clear and beach area was clean as well. Will definitely be coming back here. read more

An interesting place. Of course nature is always beautiful. This park just wasn't what I expected. I love going on the trails of different parks, and get in a healthy work out. Unfortunately Kopachucks trails were the the most short of them all. It was pleasant to walk through. The only highlight of the workout was the inclined hill going back to the parking lot. read more

Came at a -1.3 and did not see any sea stars but did find endless sand dollars, alive and deceased. My kids had an absolute blast getting squirted by clams and geoducks. They were obsessed. It's fairly rocky and probably not my favorite beach to explore but still fun and only a short hike from the lot. Btw it requires the discovery pass or $10 a day to park. read more

This is my favorite park to visit in the Harbor. They do a great job with cleanup and maintenance. Beautiful location too.

This secluded little park was perfect to take the kids to. As long as you go during low tide there's plenty of room to play and look for all kinds of sea creatures (sand dollars,crabs, and even starfish). Packed a light lunch down with us and almost had the whole beach to ourselves. Very nice and clean. read more

This place has everything you want as in using your shellfish license. There are clams, oysters, crabs and geoduck.

Cute little trails, the incline back to the parking lot is a short good workout. The little beach there is sweet too, was able to show my daughter a healthy sea star, crabs, a ton of sand dollars and much more. read more

I went to "Kopachuck State Park" in Gig Harbor, WA on 8/20/2012. I was disappointed. You cannot camp there overnight in an R.V. as signs say day use only. They charge $10 for that day use and (signs) warn you of a $99 fine if you have not paid. It may be a good place for hikers but I prefer someplace closer to the water. I must admit that had I done more research about the place I would probably not have gone there. On the other hand, the trees there were very nice. read more

Great park, but quite small. There is a walk downhill from parking lot to beach, which means you'll be walking back up hill. Some trees have fallen onto the beach, making it difficult in places to get through, but can either go back up to the path, and then come back down, or fight your way through on the beach. So sad.... Reading the current reviews are so sad... Kopachuck was my very favorite place to take my kid camping when they were young.... I went there when I was with their dad and even more times when it was just the three of us!, So close to the "real world" but yet so far! It is so sad to see a wonderful place to camp gone!
