My wife found and we tried numerous places over a couple years. We were not happy with any and ran into numerous problems. My wife found Defence Lab and we decided to do their trial. We were hooked immediately. From the moment we started, we could feel the difference. When we went to classes, we could really see the care that was out into each class. Each person that leads a class does a great job of really treating everyone well and with respect but we really appreciate how they don't just treat the kids like kids but expect them to have manners, responsibility, discipline and generally behave well. But they do it in such a great way that it isn't overbearing or rough, they it in a way that the kids can grow. I think it is a real testament that you can see how much the various students progress over time. Everyone that sticks with it really improves but not just in martial arts or in being able to protect themselves but also as a person. We have seen many kids who have really been growing out of their shells and it is very nice to see. Lastly, this is like a big family. There's quite a few people going here but it is always friendly. You can't help but make friends. It is a very healthy environment, even if you aren't the one taking the classes, I genuinely feel you benefit by just coming here. His confidence & self esteem has blossomed & I am amazed at his discipline. Sifu goes out of his way to develop close relationships with his students & their families. We love the school gatherings... pumpkin carving contests at Halloween & the Christmas party is always tons of fun. Great instructor, very patient and obviously cares about the people he trains. However, Mr.Fink and Mr. Brekenridge should maybe only train adults. They haven't learned the skill of tempering their strict teaching styles with kindness. If I could have only had Sensei Carmean to instruct my child we would still be there. Mr. Brekenridge comes of very arrogant and obviously not willing to invest in *all* of the kids he trains. This was insulting as I supported his business for 2 1/2 years. My son got to the point where this man terrified him. Mr.Brekenridge has a poor barometer when it comes to children. And finally, he spends much of the class lecturing, likes to hear himself talk. Their tiny tigers program definitely keeps my kindergartener's attention and their leadership program is great in helping tweens and teens develop leadership skills and confidence for adulthood. One of the things that sold me on this school was their Masters Club. This club offers all the benefits of traditional Songham Taekwondo but the fun part is the additional classes every Wednesday night. We learn other martial arts and street self defense including jiu jitsu, judo, Muay Thai, wrestling, grappling, and knife self defense. This class is affectionally called Wildcard Wednesdays because it could be anything! And it's all fun!! I have always been a fan of learning multiple disciplines but as you can imagine the cost of doing all of those at once can be tremendous. Mr Jason Shaefer brings it to us at a very reasonable price and makes it fun, fresh and entertaining. From the very first class, Mr. Schaefer, Mrs. Schaefer and Ms. Lallier were encouraging, helpful and made her feel at easy. In the very first class, Mr. Elizondo, a recommended blackbelt at the time, went out of his way to work with her and make sure that she understood the moves and was doing them they correct way. A few months later, our youngest daughter joined the Tiny Tigers program and has loved it. Ms. Lallier is a great teacher and has loads of patience with the little ones. She always has enough helpers to make sure that each student gets the attention that they deserve. Jump ahead another few months and now both myself and my wife have joined up. To say that South Austin ATA is a true family friendly environment is an understatement. The vast majority of the 50 - 60 students are part of a family. All and all it's a good group and the instructors truly care about their students. The biggest advantage I can see to South Austin ATA is that the owners are the instructors. They have a vested interest in making sure that the curriculum is administered correctly and they students are having fun! Highly recommend checking them out.
