Very much enjoyed my experience here. I had the beef with the scallion. The men got sushi. They devoured the sushi and said it was fabulous. My pinwheels had a little too much scallion but it was easy to take off. The meat was well seasoned and delicious. Had a real nice lunch at the hibachi side of Koto restaurant. There were four in our group, three opted for the steak lunch and one chose chicken. The meal starts with a salad and soup, followed by the hibachi cooking. Salad nice and fresh with house dressing, soup had nice flavor. The show was fun, a little fire, little juggling and playing the food right from the grill. Waitress kept our glasses filled, food was real good, enjoyed the sauces that come with the meal. Restaurant was fairly full today and it was loud - but not unexpected and not so loud that we couldn't have a conversation. read more

Have come here for sushi a few times over the last few months, as I live an hour out of the way from Pburgh. Seating areas are alright, however the bar area is absolutely gorgeous with their neon wall tube decorations! House special rolls are a bit expensive imo for the area, plus when I asked for extra tobiko and was happy to pay for it, they didn't put much more than the first time. I ordered fhe "king of the sea" roll both times. It's kind of strange you have to go to the bar to pick up your take our order as well, instead of the front booth. Also, drinks were disappointing... the first time, I got a sake martini of some sort which didn't taste like really anything at all, perhaps water with a splash of sake, who knows. Overall, good sushi, not sure about the rest. read more

Me, my family, my friend all go here regularly. Sometimes it's great, but tonight it wasn't. The size of the food was half of what we normally get for the price. This is the first time out of many visits that we were charged for tiny little extra sides of dressing. I brought up my concerns with the server who was completely dismissive and insinuated I was a liar. I left starving when normally I'm filled up. Don't let them charge you $15.74 for a regular cereal bowl of iceberg, with 1/4 an avocado, 2oz. cold tuna and 2oz dressing. read more

Pretty good for the area. The service was quick and friendly. We came here for dinner with friends and it was very smooth to order I have a gluten allergy (celiac) which is very sensitive to cross contamination. The staff was very understanding of what contains gluten and measures to take to avoid cross contamination, I was able to order any sushi roll. I didn't try any hibachi since they couldn't guarantee no cross contamination. No reaction from what I had. :) will definitely be coming back. read more

We came here to celebrate our anniversary and while it was take out only, they have outdoor seating out front. We ordered rock shrimp tempura, a couple of house salads and sushi rolls such as the spicy tuna, California and lobster. Everything was pretty average. I would come back for the rock shrimp tempura because the sauce was delicious but the sushi was a little bit of a miss. The flavors were mediocre and not the freshest. read more

Not bad. Been here a few times over the past several years - I stick to the sushi. Never had the hibachi here but it seems pretty popular. The sushi is decent - not over the top amazing but certainly fine. I don't get any of the rolls with mayo, fried stuff or tempura flakes - just basic rolls and sushi pieces. The salmon, yellowtail and tuna are good - the avocado in the rolls (during my recent visit) was excellent (perfectly ripe and flavorful). I saw lots of people getting cooked dishes - udon and other hibachi-inspired items at the regular tables - they looked pretty good. The service is friendly and efficient; we were in and out of there quickly this past Saturday night. read more

Long review short: Decent food, problematic ordering system (online orders not recorded properly). Staff: borderline friendly and professional with some business-oriented, some patronizing. VERY disorganized take-out service when busy. In short: Order to go? In order to prevent any delays in your order, skip the online option and order when you arrive. Go when it's quiet. I have to say the food is better than good. The Sushi is fresh and the udon noodles were great and made on site. The broth was delicate and tasty, and served hot. Note we sat in the restaurant portion and not up front with the grills and table side service. I'd give it 4 or 5 stars except for.... SERVICE.... We arrived and waited... and waited. Finally I had to flag down a waitress cleaning a table to put in our food and drink order. The drinks came relatively promptly but the waitress did not use a tray but hand carried them. The food arrived relatively promptly and the udon was piping hot. The sushi was essentially room temperature. The rice should be at room temp and the fish, cold.. It was all the same temperature. That said, the fish was fresh and it tasted fine. The temperature issue is not a deal breaker but I've spent considerable time in Japan and know how this should be served. The waitress barely opened her mouth and seemed truly bored by the whole affair. She popped her head in once and later came by the table when we were finished. She cleaned but left a 4 inch udon noodle sitting directly in front of me. I also had to stack a soup bowl on her pile of dishes or she would have left it. I had to ask for desert and ordered the Mochi and our check. For $3.95, you get two pitifully small pieces of mochi chopped up into quarters, served with whipped cream. It was partially frozen. I don't recommend it. We were not asked if we wanted a refill on our drinks at any point nor was water provided (Not that we asked for it). The check was delivered and we waited about 8 minutes. I had to get up and bring the check to the bar for payment. Annoying. Note we were the only ones in that section of the restaurant although the front if the house had about 20 people in it. As we were leaving, we said goodbye and thank you and no one even acknowledged us, including the guy I thought to be the owner... I'll go again because the food is genuinely good, and it's the only game in town when it comes to something approaching real Japanese food. The service, however, is in need serious work. read more

For years now--YEARS, literally--I've been saying to my mom, "Hey, you know what? We should totally try Koto the next time I'm home!' And you know what? We never do. Until last weekend. My mom and stepdad and I came here to do one thing and one thing only--watch a guy risk life and limb to cook us tasty Japanese food over a roaring fire in an artistic manner. Because what fun is going out to eat if there isn't a chance of dying in a dramatic fashion? We came on a Monday night, which in Plattsburgh is code for "ghost town". There are four giant hibachi tables set up around the room, vaguely reminiscent of a high school chemistry lab, what with the gas nozzles and lab table-like setup of the room (only way nicer, obviously). In total, 8 of us fit around that table, and after the waitress took our hibachi orders (which include soup, salad, your meat of choice, veggies, and noodles or fried rice) the chef came in with his cart of tricks and started setting up. And then FLASH! BANG! SIZZLE! Eyebrows gone for 6 weeks. Didn't need them anyway. Fire was blazing, and chef was doing his thing, chopping up veggies and meat and doing straight-up magic on the grill. I ordered scallops with veggies over fried noodles and could barely finish. I gave the remainder of my scallops to my mom to include in the take-home box. Yum. More meals need to be prepared in such a dramatic fashion. And I need a handcart to roll me out of places like these. Will definitely return the next time I'm in town and crave grilled meat and/or sushi. read more

This is not a place to work if you hate your job and you don't want to interact with people. I guess my cook didn't realize that when he applied and got the job for Koto. He was miserable. The only two words that he said the whole time where - Hello and Fire. Other than that he looked pissed off at the world and like he just wanted to get the hell out of there! The food wasn't much better than the service. We started with seared tuna and shrimp tempura roll. Ew. Neither tasted fresh. Not a good feeling when you are eating raw fish (the tuna that is). As far as the hibachi - everything was over cooked and a bit burnt. Not good - especially when you are ordering scallops. Needless to say, I will never be coming back here again. read more

I went on Saturday after my brother graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh. Koto is your average, small town (perhaps not QUITE authentic) Japanese restaurant. Although it was nothing special, the service was excellent and our food was tasty enough so I can't really rationalize giving it less then 3 stars. I ordered a beer once our whole party sat down and when I told the friendly waitress that I wanted a(n alcoholic) drink, her response was "ballin'!!". I started with a seaweed salad (pretty good), then my mom and I split the vegetable tempura (pretty good, but the ginger dipping sauce was bland) and a spicy girl roll (pretty good, but topped with too much mayo). My brother got a bento box and I tried one of his shrimp dumplings, which was also edible. tl; dr: Good service and reasonably acceptable sustinance. Review We went to Koto in Plattsburgh NY a few days ago. The service was well under par. This is the third time within a couple months that the service was bad. Upon leaving, and giving a generous tip (cash) at the table. My daughter preceeded to pay on the way out with a credit card. The woman at the register (in a very loud tone) ask why there was not a tip added. Daughter explained that it was at the table. I went back in and spoke to a manager who was just as rude as the one that took payment. I asked her if it was standard procedure to embarrass patrons about a tip. She said it is standard procedure to leave a 20% tip with the bill. I told her in all of my 64 years of life I have never been asked about a tip. And it is also up to the customer to decide if and how much of a tip should be left it should not be questioned by the restaurant. I guess that was my last trip to Koto read more

I have been to Koto on multiple occasions and the service has deteriorated every time I have been there. However I continuously return for the high quality of food. The service I received today when ordering delivery was absolutely DISGUSTING. Not only did they get my order wrong, answer the phone in the most disrespectful manner I have ever experienced, but the manager belittled me when trying to complain about the service. I expected much more from such a renowned establishment. and I hope that when I go in to speak to the owner, I am treated with respect and the situation is addressed appropriately. read more

Kotos is the best Japanese hibachi in the area . They make their own sauces and the portions are humungous. There is a. Generous portion of fried noodles and vegetables. To add to the fare they have great Japanese beer both bottled and on tap. read more

Got home and had ordered hibachi dinner for seven people and no soup what the hell for Plattsburgh this place usually isn't bad. Word of advice.
