While most therapists would help a…read morelittle (usually one issue would be resolved and then the rest addressed surface-level issues), I came across Family Tree Counseling. I selected Vernon as my therapist and he's been amazing. He has a way of noticing the thing I am blind to, and gently calling my attention to it. Every session is left with me pondering some question he asked of me...me, metaphorically watering the seed he just planted. And by the time my next appointment rolls around, life looks different and I'm making better choices...things that bothered me before have less influence on me. He has the skill to see the real issues and tactfully addresses them so that I can then do further work with it outside of therapy...which is where true change happens. One example was I wanted to go back to school but felt a lot of anxiety as I hadn't been to school in 25+ years. Vernon asked me to name 3 things I felt anxious about...he took my abstract anxiety and made me list 3 concrete things that evoked that feeling. I listed 3 thoughts and once I stated them, I noticed 2 of them were old thoughts from when I was in college years ago, and the last thought we were able to challenge with facts. It was very empowering. That's one of many examples. Other family members see Vernon and also Steve and their lives have changed for the better. I can't believe it took me 30 years to find therapists this effective.

One of their top therapists acted inappropriate towards women, paying huge attention and dismissing any husbands opinion during a therapy session. There was little empathy towards the problems our marriage was facing. There was a lot of interest in basketball shooting and grabbing money from people who were hurting.

When I called her asking for clarification, she attacked me stating that I contacted her too many times while I was in crisis and that she cannot handle this anymore. Then she released a diagnosis she never discussed or even mentioned to me to another provider which calumniated the situation. For two years after termination, I suffered from PTSD symptoms as well as guilt because I thought that I was responsible for what happened. I tried to contact her to get clarification about my diagnosis or what happened, yet she never responded. It is not till I started seeing another provider did I came to know that what happened was not my fault and understand the extent of the damage she caused me. Despite all that I decided to try and put that horrible experience behind me and try to move on, yet she made that impossible as she decided to file a restraining order against me claiming that her life is in danger. I had to hire a lawyer to defend myself which is a great burden given my limited financial means. The case is still pending a hearing. Update: I lost the case, Dr. Sanders asked me in court to waive my rights and I did thinking that she will never disclose information I shared with her in private. Yet she not only did that, she also stated the information in a way to serve her purpose. I could not say anything against her in Court. It was really hard seeing her, I was unable to say anything against her in open court. I appealed without a lawyer and lost. Everything was taken out of context to make me look bad. I am still fighting to prove my innocence, yet I do not have much hope. Wish me luck!!

Dr. Johnson assured it would only take him a few weeks to complete once all the evaluation questions were completed. Fast forward several months, the assessment was never completed and never delivered. Dr. Johnson made up conflicting excuses such as the report is "almost done" and will be done within a couple weeks. He told the attorney it had already been emailed multiple times, but not received. He then said the report was stored on a flash drive that had become corrupted and the data was "unrecoverable". The sentencing hearing took place without the assessment that was paid for and promised. We contacted Dr. Johnson and requested a refund of the entire $2500. He apologized saying he thought we had gotten the report, and said he had mailed a refund check to us that morning. After waiting a week with no check received, we contacted him again and he said we simply had to keep waiting as the mail is slow. We made him issue us a check in person and went and picked it up. The next week, we received the supposedly original check, postmarked a week after he had said it was mailed. I would highly discourage anyone from utilizing his services because he is very dishonest and blatantly lies. Search for his info online and you'll see this exact same complain from multiple other people: they pay $2500 for psychological assessments that he never delivers.

The staff has always been kind and compassionate. From the front desk to the nurse, the doctor and the therapists all have treated me with respect and dignity. All staff are very knowledgeable about eating disorders and how to treat the whole person and not just the disease. I have seen two nutritionists, a psychiatrist, two doctors, two nurses and a couple of the therapists. I have been in their outpatient and PHP programs and I would say the care I have received only improved over time. I would highly recommend seeking treatment here as a first stop or as one of your stops in your recovery journey. It is so hard to find specialists in this area, so I am grateful that this is located so close to my home and business. I see a Psychiatrist, a Psychologist, an Internist, a Dietitian, and a Family Psychologist at the center. I also attend group therapy. The recovery process takes a lot of time and effort, but it is worth it. I have been a patient at Charis for almost 9 months so far. I am not sure when my journey will end, but the visits reduce in frequency over time.
