Was visiting family and found Kraken on Yelp. Happy I did. Came in at 11:15AM and waited about 10 minutes to get a cut. $25 for the cut and was happy with the job my barber did. I appreciate good cuts without the fluff. Happy I stopped in. Mahalo guys. read more

Visited on 1/6/2017, got a cut from D. There are five parameters I evaluate when I get my hair cut, on a 1-10 scale. 1. Punctuality - 10/10. Appointment only, was able to get my cut immediately with no wait. D is a fantastic conversationalist if you like to talk, and if you don't he doesn't push. 2. Salon quality - 10/10. Very clean, well lit, plenty of natural lighting. D uses Suavecito products, which I am personally not that big of a fan of, but I understand works for a lot of people. 3. Quality of service - 9/10. Very standard fare, with a straight razor neck cleanup at the end (which is admittedly nice). The only issue was that I felt slightly rushed towards the end. 4. Quality of cut - 6/10. Here was my biggest issue - D apparently does not understand how Asian hair falls (which is understandable, given how difficult it is to manage on the daily). I asked for a faded undercut with the top thinned out (used picture) - what I received was a full disconnect higher than my hairline naturally falls, which looked very awkward for the next few weeks. It is admittedly difficult to get Asian hair correct (very few barbers have been able to), but for what I paid and saw from Yelp I expected better. 5. Price/quality ratio - 8/10. $20 for a cut, incl. tip ~ $25. Very good price, but again, for what I received I expected slightly better. I also understand he increased his price recently to $25. Overall: if your hair type is easy to manage and you are looking for a simple, efficient cut, D is your man. Otherwise, it may be better to look elsewhere. read more

Take a step back in time with me. A time when barbers cared for their customers. When they woke up in the morning, and decided that they would be clean, presentable, and stylish for their customers. A time when patience, and care for what you do was lauded and praised instead of putting more emphasis on speed and quantity. Kraken is all about quality. It's a clean environment with a barber that can fade you, trim you, straight razor shave you, I heard if you ask nicely he'll even happy ending you. It's all for a good price where the quality far outweighs the cost. I highly recommend this joint for anyone who needs to be cleaned up before a hot date or interviews alike. He straight razored my scalp for me, and lined up my beard nicely. Conversation was warm and familiar, while he treated my scalp with the utmost care. I hope Kraken is here to stay. read more

I was looking for a good barber and that is exactly what I found at Kraken. The location is very easy to get to at the studio salons in Fort Union. I was able to book my appointment online via the company's website and SquareSpace. The owner, D, is courteous and very professional. I am an introvert by nature and D made me feel comfortable right away. I knew I wanted a more modern cut, but I wasn't sure exactly what to ask for. D listened to what I was looking for and got to work quickly. He was done within 20 minutes and he even straight razored the back of my neck. D is an artist and a master of his craft. I found the $20 price to be more than reasonable. I would recommend Kraken to anyone looking for a skilled professional barber. read more

I went to D. for the first time last night. He seems to be a good guy and a really solid barber. He takes his time and provides good conversation along the way. I appreciate that D. speaks to you in English, not barber. The gentleman's barber shop has seen a bit of a resurgence. It's great that some of the classic men's haircuts are coming back and their are real barbers that know how to cut hair and use a straight razor. Unfortunately, some of these new shops are run by and filled with pretentious hipsters. D. came off to me as a regular guy that won't care if you know the trendy terminology or how long your beard is. I got a clean, classic conservative pomp and straight shave for $40.
