The bikes are great! There's municipal parking a block away so just drive to Highlands, park, and rent a bike for a fun day at the beach. You can visit one of the beaches in Highlands or go over the bridge to the ocean beach at Sandy Hook. There are about a dozen restaurants with a mile, so stay for delicious breakfast, lunch, or dinner in town. Excellent value and easy pick up/drop off. read more

I am hate leaving these types of posts but I dont know what else to do. My husband and I dropped our bikes off to be repaired in the end of May begining of June of 2020. We were told our bikes would be done in two weeks. Two weeks later, we still didnt have a our bikes back. We wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt so we stopped by the shop. We spoke with Karen who is the wife of the owner. She told us there was a delay getting parts and we would have to wait another two weeks to get our bikes back. Again, we were willing to give them the benefit of the doubt because we have never had any issues with them in the past. Two more weeks went by. My husband went to the shop to check on the bikes they were still not ready. My husband was able to get the bike shop to rent us bikes free of charge until our bikes were ready. Several more months went by, and it was September. Our bikes were still not fixed and the shop stopped answering our calls. I stopped by in person again and same story about having trouble getting parts because of the pandemic. I expressed my frustration about the lack of communication and the signficant delays. They explained there was nothing they could do which was bullshit because they could have called. I went back several more times only to be told the same thing over and over again. It is no December, we have no bikes, and Krankys is not returning our calls. We are moving in a few weeks and need them back. I will never use Krankys again. Do NOT use this shop for repairs. It saddens me because, I love supporting local businesses. The sittuation would be very different if they would just return our calls. read more

The absolute worst customer service. Horribly run business. Incredibly rude. Not worth it.

We arrived there at 10am because that is when the bike shop was supposed to be open. It is Memorials day and it seems to be open on this day. He does not pick up the calls and we waited for 2 hours until we finally gave up. There were many people coming back and forth to get bikes as well and many said that he often is late. He could write a sign that he was not going to open or at least answer his phone and let us know. read more

We recently moved local and discovering Krankys was the best thing to happen to us! I have rented E-bikes from this small, local family owned bike shop 3 times this week. The owners are extremely accommodating and live very close to the shop. They are great people who run a fabulous business! Highlands is very lucky to have Krankys in town! So much fun for both the locals and visitors from afar to explore the area, too! We are obsessed with the E-bikes! This shop is one of the best businesses in Highlands, NJ. They have rentals and bikes for sale. Kranky sells and services road bikes, mountain bikes, kids bikes, beach cruisers, and everything in between. He also knows all the trails and scenic routes in the area and provides tips to any riders who ask. My wife and I bought two beach cruisers that we could not be happier with, and we have had our mountain bikes expertly serviced. Garrett is the best! So helpful and doesn't try to upsell you on anything you don't need. Average maintenance time of 2-3 weeks for a tune up, which is fine, since the place we went before often took over a month. Just bring your bike in the early spring and you will be good for the season. Well worth Garrett's touch and love, you cannot put your bike in better hands. He also helped me find my dream bike, when I asked for help, and it is a beautiful Felt road bike. So in love with my bike. And he has bike cruisers to rent, so if your friends are in town or you yourself are visiting, you can grab a bike and a lock for the day and adventure by the seaside. Rented a couple of bicycles yesterday with my sister. Took about 5 minutes to get the bikes (locks and baskets included). The person who took care of us (did not get his name) could not be nicer. Not being from the area, we had a lot of questions about bike trails and the best places to see. He answered every one with a smile. Super nice guy! Also, no time limit on the rental. Not sure if that's a seasonal thing or always the policy but all we had to do was bring the bikes back by midnight. The area is beautiful and challenging at times with lots of eateries and bars. The trails are right by the water. We can't wait to go back and bring the whole family. Highly recommend using this bike shop! read more

The most fun you can get out of 3 hours and $30...we rented electric bikes, drove out onto the Henry Hudson Trail and then back out to the end of Sandy Hook - we had a TOTAL blast. We'll definitely be back, and we'll be smart enough to rent them for the entire day next time. Just a heads up: you may have to call the owner on the number posted on the door if they aren't open when you get there, but the owner called us back immediately, arrived shortly and had us headed out within minutes. And just a suggestion (that we'll be heeding next time): Grab some lunch at Et Al on the corner a few steps away and have a picnic on the beach! read more

Step inside this shop and find the owner who is anything but cranky. He is friendly and knowledgeable. Ask him for advice on local trails and he will set you up. I had my mountain bike serviced here and it was better than new when it was returned to me. After that I purchased a beach cruiser from this shop. It is the perfect way to get out to the hook and over too Atlantic Highlands. Meant cycles had ask of the add-on that I wanted for my bikes, including front and back lights as well as a basket. Worst customer service ever. I dropped off a brand new bike (in a box) to be assembled on 5/3/19. The little yellow paper that the owner gave me had an estimate of "2 wks". I go in the store to see the progress on 5/16/19, and my bike is still in the box up front. The owner then tells me he is open tomorrow and expects to "get to my bike" after a "few others". He also explained to me that he does not assemble bikes on weekends because he cares more about bike rentals on the weekends. Um hi, hello, I'm a customer giving you money to help me out. Am I not that important to you? Do you only care about out of town people who rent overpriced bicycles? Why not help someone who LIVES IN THE TOWN YOU WORK IN. Then, I go back @3pm on 5/3/19 (the date it's supposed to be done) AND ITS STILL IN THE BOX!!! He says my bike is next and "should" be done tonight. I asked when he closed and he said 5. Came off the ferry from NYC and rented a bike for the day to cycle up to Sandy Hook. Called the night before and they had it ready and waiting, made the return easy, and gave me the bike all day until 10 pm! All for a reasonable price. Kranky Cycles is quite simply GREAT! I can't say enough about the quality service and friendly staff at this Highland, NJ bike shop. I have ridden in the Twin Lights ride for two years now - in 2013, when I stopped by to browse, the staff couldn't have more helpful or friendly. At the 2014 ride, Kranky's owner, Garrett, rescued me from disaster when my Shimano rear wheel popped a spoke 20 blocks into the event! Kranky was mobbed with riders: getting air, having last minute adjustments etc - and I feared all was lost... I had been looking forward to tackling the 75mi loop all year... Not only did Garrett rent me a very high-end back wheel for a very reasonable price (and swap out all the hardware,the inner tube and tire in a flash) - but when I returned that afternoon, he had cleverly found a way to replace my (rather fiddly) Shimano spoke so I could ride home that night. ABOVE and BEYOND!!!! This is one class operation. Whether you want to rent or buy, if you're anywhere nearby - I recommend you get Kranky! read more

We had a very positive experience with Kranky Cycles. We came to Highlands for the weekend and rented bicycles to be able to get around town and go to the beach. This was by far the best rented bicycle I have ever riden! It was a 3G island cruiser brand new, was a treat to ride. Garrett was extremly friendly, knowledgable, and accomodating to our needs. Kranky was as helpful as could be and we had a great ride. Our problem was that it was very early in the season (pre-season, really) and we needed to get going before the store opened. Kranky was able to lock up the bikes overnight so we could get going early. Given that it was cool and windy, we opted for the Henry Hudson rail trail versus the Sandy Hook beach trail. read more

This place Rocks harder than a jagged rock garden. The owner is extremely kind hearted and helped me out of a last minute jam 1 year ago. No questions asked and with such CLASS, he made me feel incredibly welcome and appreciated. He also is very knowledgable and experienced.
