Best grocery store in Crawfordsville. Large produce section for all your fruit and veggie needs. Meat department works hard to give you just what you want. Though not a large seafood section, everything is clean and well stocked. Large, wide aisles allow for great traffic flow. Time of day has large effect on how efficient your experience can be. I find early mornings are best even though restocking is taking place. Sunday's and evenings are the worst. Lots of people and longer lines. However, management does a wonderful job at opening lanes as needed. Also, sale items that start on Thursday can sell out quickly and you have to wait until a truck comes in or get a rain check. Cakes in the bakery are delicious. I have ordered many over the years and never been disappointed. Deli has numerous soups, fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, rotisserie chicken, hot sides, etc. They also are super at platter orders and picnic orders. Restrooms up front and are not very nice. Small and outdated. Pharmacy area is small but gets the job done. They also have a walk up window on exterior. Redbox machines can be found just near the entrance. The number one feature of the whole store is the people that work there. Everyone is friendly and helpful. The are attentive to your needs and work to make compromises when they are out of a product or you are dissatisfied. Celebrating birthdays is a time- honored tradition. A family celebration is a time of positive emotion. For over 30 years our family has chosen Kroger's bakery birthday cake. I have so many positive birthday memories. Kroger birthday cake was always at the center of our birthday memories. Our family is smaller now. Our family has grown and moved out of our house. We purposely have small celebrations now. I have been shopping at Walmart for groceries lately. Today I chose Kroger's to purchase my youngest son's birthday cake. I was so excited when I walked to the Kroger Bakery department. Positive emotion filled my mind. Previous visits filled my mind. Previous visits of purchasing birthday cake. Today I picked out half of a round 20-inch birthday cake. The outside of the cake was topped with chocolate covered Oreos. There was room in the middle of the cake for a small handwritten greeting. I knew the bakery department would have difficulty writing Happy Birthday on the cake. I thought a small birthday greeting could be written on the top of the cake. Maybe something like "29th B-day" could be written on the top of the cake. I waited patiently at the Bakery counter. Someone who worked in the Bakery Department walked by. I asked if I could have something wrote on top of the cake. The bakery worker instantly went on defense and stated rather loudly that there was not enough room to write on the cake. I had anticipated this. I then ask if she could remove the cookies. The cookies seemed to be gently placed on the top of the icing. She then retorted even louder that if she removed the cookies, she would destroy the cake. It was her rather rude tone of voice that shook my emotion. I was not super upset. I put the cake down. I told her I would go to Walmart and buy my birthday cake. She then said I did not have to go to Walmart. I then told her in a disapproving tone I appreciated the value she added to my experience. Kroger is my grocery of choice, and this particular Kroger is A-OK. It's not super fancy, but it's perfectly fine for grocery shopping. I must say that they have a huge selection of magazines. So many great ones. You should support print journalism and pick up a couple while you're out shopping for bread and eggs. I don't mean to be a Scrooge or anything, but I went to Kroger last night and saw that the place was already fully decked out for Christmas -- complete with holiday displays, red & green decorations, and a jolly Frosty the Snowman out front. This would be well and good ... with one important caveat: IT'S NOVEMBER 5th, PEOPLE! There is simply NO EXCUSE for starting Christmas in early November. For all I know, the decorations were up on November 1st. I hold this belief for two reasons: 1. Allowing Christmas to last for so long actually detracts from the sanctity of the holiday. Christmas is a special day -- and for some people, a HOLYday -- that comes on a specific day of the year. And while it might be natural to 'anticipate' the festival for a couple weeks beforehand, and maybe even to savor the flavor for a couple days after, allowing the 'Christmas Season' to bubble over into everything from Halloween to President's Day has the effect of diluting the inviolability of the day itself. And yes, it's particularly irksome to see the sanctity of a special day -- and the celebration of a special life --sacrificed on the alters of capitalism. Seriously people, what would Jesus do if he saw a celebration of his life turned into a paltry and shameless attempt to make a buck?! "Take these things away; make not My Father's house a house of merchandise!" [John 2:16] 2. Moreover, allowing Christmas to start in early November leaves us no special time to celebrate Thanksgiving on its own terms. Thanksgiving is an all-American holiday, and is (to most Americans) as blessed to a patriotic life as Christmas is to a spiritual one. Typical grocery store :) We actually got about a week's worth of food and a whole bunch of snacks for $98! Their fruit and vegetable section is pretty sparse, and meat selection isn't the greatest either, but we had no trouble finding plenty of things that we could have for dinner. read more

This is supposedly the "good" Kroger in town (my faculty friends call the one on the north side "ghetto Kroger"), but that's not saying much. I'll put it this way, I despise Walmart, and Walmart is another mile out of my way...but Walmart is more convenient than this place. Where to begin? 1. Terrible selection. From produce to frozen fruit to dairy, many times I've gone there I've realized they don't even have what I need, or I'm forced to settle for some ridiculous (e.g., overpriced, wrong-sized) substitute. Even some of the things they regularly carry are frequently out of stock. If I have to go to Walmart anyway for those things, when even bother with Kroger? Especially considering... 2. Awful prices. Kroger doesn't seem to get what it is, or is simply exploiting customers because they aren't Walmart. News flash: the Crawfordsville Krogers are low-quality, poor-selection grocery stores. If I was getting warehouse store prices, maybe I could justify shopping there a bit more, but I'm not. And I'm even missing out on discounts because of their... 3. Absurd loyalty program. Full disclosure: I hate store loyalty cards in general. Just give customers the same dang price without jumping through hoops and invading their privacy. But I wouldn't give a negative review over them, because they've become ubiquitous. To Kroger's credit, they don't *make* you register the card and will even swipe an employee's (or ask another customer) if you forgot it. I've been to stores that will flat-out steal from you (refuse to swipe another card, tell you you're holding up the line and can't register for one then)--cough, ShopRite, cough--and Kroger isn't that bad. But then they started with the *digital coupon* nonsense. It's bad enough that you're making people carry your card. Now they don't get the price you display on your shelves unless you jump through hoops BEFORE you get to the store (or struggle with the awful wireless signal strength of Crawfordsville and try to do it on your phone in the store)? C'mon. I literally walked out of the store without buying items on my list because they were offering a discount that they wouldn't give me. When I tried to go online before my next trip, I couldn't register the card and got... 4. Awful customer service. They basically told me that the card (my card) had previously been linked to a phone number (maybe in the past my friend did so to register a digital coupon), so they couldn't reset it. So, basically I have to get *another* card just to get your discount? Off to Walmart I go. Also... 5. Poor in-store customer service. It's not the *worst* but it's not very good. There are some downright unpleasant folks behind the customer service counter that make the place very inhospitable. And then there's there policy of closing off all the registers at 10 p.m. and forcing everyone to use self-service. I get that 24-hour stores grapple with how to shift into a night mode, and there's a time and place for scaling down to one register--and MAYBE just self-service from like 2-5 a.m.--but 10 p.m. is not that time. I've seen a line of 6 people waiting to use a self-service checkout and two employees trying to help expedite things. Doesn't this SCREAM "let's open a register and get these folks home"? It's inevitable that using a self-service checkout is going to take you three times as long and frequently require an associate to fix an error, especially given Kroger's oversensitive "place/remove the item from the bagging area" protocols. Inevitably you're not saving that much employee time when that assistance is needed. So keep a regular register open until 2 a.m. (the employee doesn't need to be camped out there; they can accomplish tasks at the service desk and rotate as needed), and then keep someone at the service desk to help with self-service afterwards. Heck, recently I saw someone at a (closed) register just farting around, as they blocked off the main entrance and the widest part of the main exit, making it more difficult to even enter the store with a cart. Of course that woman couldn't be bothered to check out the customers, though. :-/ read more

I used to like this store but it seems to be getting worse. I have never shopped at a store with so many bare shelves. It doesn't matter if it's on a busy Fri night, Mon, or a Wed, every time I shop there are a couple basic items they are out of. Their selection is already quite limited. Also, just when I was going to call them and kindly inform them that it was very difficult to find a handicap parking spot in their lot, they change some of them into parking for pregnant women! Now they need even more handicap spots. Last, but not least, the check-out lines are starting to resemble those at Walmart! I was there at 8pm last nite and they had one register open. The carts were lined up way down the aisle and self check-out was packed. These are all fixable with proper management! read more

This Kroger has recently undergone some major remodeling. From what I see they wanted it to look like the Payless stores. The way they moved some of the items around now I think is confusing. Definitely check out the deli section now as they have hot soups and sandwiches and other stuff all ready to go if you want an easy meal. read more

I like Kroger but the store is needing more experienced workers who care about the customer, not saying all the workers don't care it just needs more and there practice on medical leaves need to be improved. They need to know that people get sick and medically should not be around customers that doesn't mean they should be let go or even in a sense picked on. Maybe some new managers could be helpful, until then the other Kroger is looking good. read more

Horrible experience! I went at 9 o'clock on a Monday evening there was a store full of people and management decided to shut all checkout lanes down and force everyone to use the self check out stations. Many people have a full cart of groceries which is very difficult with the self check out stations. The machines are horribly slow with warnings that take forever to clear . There were at least four employees standing around looking at the four self-serve stations. Two of those employees could've opened one lane and cleared the entire group in 10 or 15 minutes. Instead they let everyone check themselves out and it took me 25 to 30 minutes to check out. I don't see how Kroger saved any money with the amount of employees that were there doing basically nothing. I spend about $1000 a month at the store, but I might as well go to Walmart if this is how they're going to treat customers. read more

We always use the self checkout here and love the older gentlemen who is usually always working it when we are there. He is really nice, and always give our daughter stickers and talks with her (helping keep her occupied) while we get things scanned. He is quick to resolve any technical issues with the self scan and quick with coupons. read more
