Who the heck knew that there is a Needler's in downtown Indianapolis? Apparently, everyone except me. I guess this used to be a Marsh, before all of the Marsh stores closed. So all of the old reviews that mention Marsh don't apply to this newer store, now called Needler's Fresh Market. I don't know -- I think Needler's is pretty good! It has a little bakery on site (Lemon's Bakery Cafe), which has hot food and baked goods, with seating by big windows that overlook Mass Ave. Beyond the cafe, the rest of the joint is a small grocery store. You'll find a modest produce section with fresh-looking greens and fruit and things. They sell house-made hummus and sushi. The wine section is abysmal, but I did find a bottle of one of my cheapie low-key favorite bottles of Malbec here, so I picked that up. The dried ramen section is also better than it needs to be. The prices seem to be about the same as Kroger and other grocery stores. Checkout was quick and there were several registers open. The only thing is that I entered through the cafe and exited by the registers, so I got a little turned around once I exited. Keep in mind that you can only enter/exit through the cafe at certain hours. They lock that door after a particular time. (I think it's 5 or 6 p.m.) read more

This is an expensive market, but I was able to find a SEEDED watermelon her for $10, so this place is alright with me! It's hard to find a seeded watermelon these days, so I was estatic when I saw them staged outside the back entrance to the store (where the parking lot is). I also grabbed a gallon of unsweetened tea, a couple ears of fresh corn and some Advil. I was able to find everything I needed with ease and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. read more

Five stars for the pharmacy and location/parking convenience. Two stars for the vibe, layout, etc. if this grocery. As someone who lovesss grocery shopping and all things related to food, the low ceilings, lack of natural light and feel of this grocery doesn't do it for me. We tend to stop here when we are in pinch but otherwise, we drive out to Trader Joe's or ALDIs despite being downtown residents. The pharmacy folks are very professional and swift in fulfilling orders. The parking lot is very convenient (free parking) as well as the fact that they have Fusek's Hardware store and Commisary coffee shop as neighbors. read more

Needler's is a nice little grocery store within walking distance of Mass Ave. It has a parking lot as well as metered parking along the street. It's a nice place to stop in if you need something quick downtown as far as groceries sake. I love the flowers and plants they sell. Every holiday they have the best selection. I recently bought my grandma a nice real wreath with juniper berries, pinecones and was made with pine leaves. It smelled amazing and had a nice red bow on it. My grandma loved it and it's hanging on her door. They sell Rosie's gooey butter cakes there and have a little cafe up front. I noticed they had a nice self serve salad bar during the day. They had lots of great looking dips, meals, rotisserie chicken all ready to go. I'm glad this grocery store is here as I come here every now and then for different things and always find what I'm looking for. read more

Even so this is a bit pricier than a lot of grocery stores, consider the location. Smack in the middle of downtown this is of course one busy place. While there is a free parking lot attached , it can get a bit tricky especially when there are events going on in the area. Still, I find the selection here sufficient especially for such a small store. There are a lot of ready to eat meal options available. I really haven't had a case where I didn't find what I was looking for unless I had my heart set on a particular brand or some specialty item. And now that I have signed up for their loyalty program I can take advantage of their specials, which will save me a bit. read more

I go to Needlers 2-3 x's per week for the salad bar. Today I had the rudest cashier, Lisa, receipt attached. She was appalled, when I questioned her putting my small pod of salad dressing on the scale with my salad. I advised, No, I had not Ever been charged for salad dressing. She rudely responded by saying that they told me wrong. I said no, they didn't have to tell me anything, as it's never came up. It has appeared to be a complimentary condiment. So I further stated that it was ok, I didn't need it. She went on & on & not only referred to her coworkers as stupid But repeated it 4x's. She said well, I'm going to Give it to you this time. I said fine & I won't be back. I grocery shop there about 2x's per week, although Needler's is pricey. It's a hometown market & I try to support it for that reason. This is a regional grocery chain, and that's always a plus. The design of the building is a bit strange, with some other adjoining businesses and an entrance away from the main street. The produce looked rather nice. The rest of the store didn't quite deliver what I'd hoped. It was not a huge amount of local or niche brands, and a lot of the same stuff you'd get at a Kroger anyway. Their section labeled "healthy" snacks I wasn't convinced of as being all that healthy, and it was a small section. If it had been a more locavore high-end place, I would have liked it. If it was more of a big-box store but with local ownership and less of a big corporate vibe, I would have liked it. I just wasn't quite convinced they were offering either of those models. read more

The place has a rotten meat smell. It's so disgusting. The store is dirty. The prices are outrageous. The staff is rude and inconsiderate. The store is also invaded with homeless people begging for money both inside and outside. They need more security. read more

I won't be shopping at Needler's Fresh Market anymore. This place should actually be called Needler's Rotten Vegetables! I went on a Saturday afternoon to buy a few items including onions. When I went to get onions there were about 30 gnats/flies on several of the onions. It looked like a horror film! I told a staff member who said she would inform the manager. Ten minutes later I saw the manager to tell him there were gnats/flies on the onions. He was dismissive. The manager told me he removed the spoiled onion while providing excuses that "It's hot." However, the problem wasn't resolved. There were still flies and gnats devouring the onions. A fly was even flying around on the manager's shirt. This could have been a Saturday Night Live skit. But it's no joke! I won't ever be shopping at Needler's Rotten Vegetables. I have enclosed a photo with flies on the onions. New to downtown Indianapolis. I've gone to Needlers on New Jersey at least half a dozen times in the six weeks I've been here. Today may be the last. I've never received pleasant service upon checkout, but the bitter young lady in lane #4 today was one of the rudest checkout persons I've ever encountered. Needlers, you have to do better or you're going to lose more customers. The only other comment I'll make about the store is that often times the produce is old. Hoping for better here too. read more

This is a very nice store. It is somewhat pricey, but the quality is usually good. The store is conveniently located---within a two-block walking distance from many condos and apartments. There are a few areas upon which the store could improve: (1) Customer Service at the deli counter--There can be four or five employees in the area, but they do not look up from whatever they are doing to see if there are customers. When someone finally sidles to counter and ask, "Can I help you?", I want to reply, "No, I am just standing here, hoping to grow taller." This sometimes, happens at the meat counter. Sometimes, there is no one to assist customers, and there is no bell to ring to get someone's attention. This type of behavior can make a customer feel like (s)he is being an annoyance to the employee, rather than an asset. Perhaps, some of them could benefit on training related inter-connectivity. (2) The store rarely mails coupons, but when it does the coupon are post-dated. It would be helpful if they just had an expiration date. Thank goodness for Needler's! While living downtown, it was often our saving grace for quick ingredients that we had forgotten on our last big grocery trips. The drink selection is awesome and although it is a smaller grocery, they do have all of the essentials. They also have a balloon/helium window, which I used for work a few times. It's pretty shady, maybe even a bit deceptive to have signs and product packaging with "on sale" stickers for a good price, and then not honor that price at the checkout counter when the register employee doesn't bother to ask you to enter all your information in order to receive the sale price! Or that you have to sign up and enter your phone number every time in order to get the sale price. And of course the customer service desk who could easily remedy the situation by offering the discount after the fact when pointed out to them could not be bothered or could not care less, bad look, bad business, and when you're paying a premium like this for items, I would like some basic customer service skills aka sympathize, and rectify! the North New Jersey Street store in Indy has grossly soured my experience for shopping there, now I'll have to be pretty desperate to go there at all! read more

I've been here a few times, and though I haven't shopped here on a "regular" shopping day, I have stopped in when in the area and picked up a few things so that I wouldn't have to make a special stop elsewhere. They have convenient parking (rare near Mass Ave) for up to 2 hours. Inside, they have most of the departments that the big box stores have for groceries: Deli, cheese, sushi, produce, salad bar, and the standard boxed goods. Note that there is also a small pastry shop on the Alabama Street side where you can get some additional goodies/lunch. I just needed a couple items and so I was able to quickly find those and go through the self checkout. It wasn't too hard to figure out and soon I was on my way. They don't have all the options that the giant stores have, but they have the basics covered here and for most things, you can pick them up without having to go to the suburbs. I stopped by the Needler's Fresh Market in downtown Indianapolis on my way to a nearby Yelp event. I'd always wanted to check the place out, but usually when I drive by it I'm on the way home and anxious to get there. As most know by now, Needler's took over the Lockerbie space vacated by the end of the Marsh franchise. Needler's Fresh Market is part of Ohio-based Fresh Encounter Inc., and has had other locations in Indiana but hadn't had a presence in Indianapolis until the departure of Marsh led to the immediate vacancy of some prime real estate. If you know this area, then you already know it's actually a fairly nice shopping center that is also in need of some sprucing up. As I parked my car in one of the surprisingly few accessible spots, I immediately felt very comfortable in the area but was also aware that aspects of this retail spot seemed very worn and kind of dirty. The office spaces around it seem better cared for, but this spot, which was an O'Malia's before it was Marsh, definitely needs sprucing up and I'm surprised it hasn't been done. Needler's emphasizes sourcing local fresh produce and high quality bakery/deli items along with fresh meat that includes premium angus, all-natural pork, and Miller Amish Country poultry. The parent chain is a growing one, especially in Indiana, and I believe there are now two spots in Indy. This spot, as noted, included two accessible spots up front with an appropriate curb cut, though I was surprised it wasn't more cleaned up. There's a couple other spots by a nearby Hardware store across the parking lot. There's a parking sign that emphasizes a two-hour parking lot limit that is reportedly enforced. The doors are automatic, as is true for most grocery stores these days. Thus, the entry way is definitely accessible. They had mostly full carts, a few of the short basket carts and I do believe they had a very limited number of power carts. Needler's was bigger than I expected. This location has always had an odd floor design and Needler's hasn't really changed that. It almost looks like they're working on some things, but I couldn't tell if that was maintenance or renovation. Truthfully, it was kind of messy. On one hand, I was impressed with the broad selection of certain healthier items - like gourmet teas, water, drinks, and a nicely done gift/candle area with a solid area for drug store type items. On the other hand, I couldn't help but notice that almost everything I looked at was more expensive than just about anywhere else I would shop. There were some exceptions, but not very many. If I lived in the area, it would be easily worth it to not have to drive anywhere. However, knowing what I do now I can't imagine stopping for a grocery run on the way home. I live close to a Neighborhood Market and a Meijer and both are definitely less expensive. I would probably compare prices to Target, though Target has more sales and better service. The service? I wheeled through the entire store and wasn't greeted a single time. Not once. I wheeled by people, but I was never acknowledged. I found that strange, especially because I didn't have a cart (which can be a signal of shoplifting - I promise, I didn't). However, when I got up front the cashier was super friendly. I can't say there was anything I particularly disliked about Needler's. I just wasn't that impressed. For a franchise's entry into a market, it was kind of a let down. I expected it to be along the lines of a Fresh Market, but it was closer to a Safeway with better products. The only thing I bought was a cinnamon roll as a snack. It was reasonably priced at $1.29 and was definitely fresh. That's not always true for grocery pastries toward the end of the day. So, that was a plus. Overall, this was a middle-of-the-road experience for me. If I'm in the area and need a couple items, I'll not hesitate to stop. However, for my full-on grocery needs there are better options with better prices and better service. read more

I usually only shop at Needler's in emergency because I prefer cheaper stores with more options, but it's a good store! They have sushi that is supplied by Sushi Boss that is really good! I also like that they have fresh potted herbs that you can grow at home, just wish they were watered more in store and kept alive so I could buy them more often. If I lived in Indy, I'd be here every day! Needler's has just gone through a major renovation. It is beautiful, spacious, and very organized. It was like a Whole Foods, but so much better. The variety of products was impressive-- from sections of local goods to fresh fish, cheeses, deli items, in-house infused water, fresh produce, coffee bar, fresh sushi made to order....as well as a hot bar and a salad bar -- I was amazed. They also have local kombucha bottled and on tap-- you can grab a big growler of your fave! Fresh flowers, home goods, and a full freezer section round out the product selection nicely. I spent almost an hour here and absolutely loved the experience. And, as an added bonus, the people who work here were super helpful and pleasant. Can't wait to come back!! read more

I don't understand this stores low rating. My experiences have all been good. This is a small chain grocery store that is similar to a Whole Foods. I have been here a few times and their fruit is always fresh, the store is very clean and organized, and the desserts are straight out of a magazine. They draw me in every time. They use local farms for their produce, which is a plus. The only down side I experienced is that they are a bit on the pricy side. But you have to pay for fresh. They have alcohol, a bakery, a pharmacy, a deli, sushi, a florist and some household items. This is almost a one stop shop. I don't know if I could do my full grocery shopping here, but definitely have done quick stops. Most of the staff there is friendly. The have a huge free parking lot for you to park and a Redbox machine where you can rent movies as well. The baked goods there are the best, from the cakes to the pies to the muffins and everything in between. They fried chicken and other cooked foods are pretty good as well. Over the past year or so, Needler's has become my go-to grocery store. It's the most convenient option for all those who live on Mass Ave or in an adjacent neighborhood. I used to go to the Kroger on Michigan but just grew tired of the garage parking and the mostly college-aged clientele. Needler's has a wonderful parking lot you can enter off of New York or New Jersey. I also find that the store itself is clean, logically organized, and stocked with whatever items are on my list. The cashiers are always very friendly. Rest assured they have a loyalty program similar to chain grocery stores. If you are a downtown resident or are visiting the city Needlers is one of your only grocery options! They have a great line of up grab and go options! If you need a snack, a fresh lemonade or a quick dinner Needlers is a good choice. The prices are a bit higher than a normal grocery store but for the convenience it's worth it. They have a large produce section, decent seafood options and a great deli. If you love Boar's head meat and cheeses they can hook you up. One of the best parts is Needlers has parking! Being that it's in the city it's hard to come by a parking lot, here there's plenty of space. The meat counter has some nice options. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Full salad/sushi/hot bar and prepared lunch boxes. A good place downtown to stop in for lunch. Only come here if you absolutely have to. I live across from needlers and only come to get last minute things. I try to not come here at all unless it's for cookies and super late at night. All of the people who work here do not know where anything is and don't know if they have anything. Truly. This is baffling. The store is always smelly and somewhat dirty. Just go to Kroger or Whole Foods or Aldi on Madison ave if you need groceries. This store is also extremely overpriced and doesn't have a good range of selections. I'm giving two stars solely because there is ONE worker who is friendly and i wish i could remember her name. She typically works in the cafe and has curly hair. Lifelong downtown resident. Needler's is the closest of the downtown grocers to me, but is my emergency option only for a few reasons. 1. Prices - Needlers is almost ALWAYS the most expensive, even compared to Whole Foods. And I ALWAYS double check the prices that ring up at the register because they are wrong more often than you'd expect. 2. Selection - doesn't come close to Kroger. Even Whole Foods has a much larger variety ( and better quality/prices) of fresh produce. 3. Freshness - I can't tell you how' many times I've purchased something only to get home and realize that it was past its sell by date. I suspect this is because they turn less product for the reasons listed above. I will say the location is convenient and the employees are generally very friendly and helpful (except for the one larger guy who often works the customer service counter, but I haven't seen him lately so not sure if he's still there). read more

I love that we have a market downtown that carries Boars Head products. The selection is good. Produce isn't always the best but I like they use local farms. The deli has a good variety and everything we have tried has been really good. I do wish they had a few more of the products I buy so I could make it a one stop shop. I've been coming here for a month or so. I would have given them 3 stars before just because of store organization. It's hard to find what you are looking for. I thought I had reviewed Needler's last year but obviously not. I really like Needler's Market and at times I still feel like I'm walking through the old O'Malia's. Needler's has great selections in most departments, many specialty items and excellent customer service. I personally love the diverse selection of prepared convenience foods at Needler's. Their Special Recipe Cookies (fav's flavors lemon iced and chocolate brownie) are yummy and one of their specialty cookies. Little pricey at $5 a dozen but lots of flavor and comparable in price to Loft House Cookies. If you haven't tried the salad/hot/soup bar you should. It's always fresh, fabulous selection and afforable depending on how heavy handed you are. I have a tendency to load up my container because of all the delicious selections. It's very popular with the lunch crowd but the line moves quickly. The deli is my second favorite area. I have so many favorites it's hard for me to choose sometimes. When you're just to tired to cook grab a precooked meal (hot items or cold meats and salads) and just hit the microwave when you get home. The deli is a great spot to stop if you're planning a picnic, going to an outdoor concert or just want easy lunches. The produce department has super fresh veggies and fruits. Lots of pre-cut fruits and veggie trays along with pre-made salads. The meat department has always been extremely helpful when I have questions and trying to choose between different cuts of meats. Honestly, I've alway found what I need throughout the store plus so much more. It's very easy for me to over spend with all the temptations here. And as we all know, never shop when your hungry. Don't forget the Lemon's Bakery and Cafe toward the back of the store overlooking Alabama. I always like to enjoy a coffee while I shop. Just wish the grocery carts had cup holders. Customer service has never been an issue for me. Always helpful, friendly, even walking me to an item I can't find. Fun to just take a few extra minutes and explore the shelves. The friendly cashiers usually get you through the lines quickly but especially at lunch rush. If you've never been here they have a free parking lot with two entrances off New York or New Jersey Street. Stop in, grab a fast lunch or dinner or groceries for the week. read more

I don't live downtown so I don't frequent this spot but I know it's been a great lifesaver for the last couple of times when I've needed to grab something to go to a friend's apartment or bring a little something. It has almost everything a full size grocery store does, but just not every brand under the sun. I walked into the desserts section side when coming in and I was offered samples of carrot cake! It's also rare to find a store that has it's own parking downtown so I know that is nice. Downtown is slowly getting more stores so I know my friends who live downtown are grateful for that! read more

This store is filthy! It probably hasn't not been cleaned since the pandemic. If you use the self-check out you can really see the filth.
