This is the grocery store I go to most often. It could be and should be great but they have serious issues with inventory and stocking. Everytime I go (no matter the day or time), they are out of some staple. Canned beans... tomatoes... cucumbers... canned seltzer water.... ground turkey.... They are constantly running out of basic things. Usually I go here and then have to immediately go to the Martins across the street to pick up the 2-3 items that Kroger was out of. I keep going back because i really WANT them to get their inventory mess together. Everything else about the store is great. The meat and produce selection always look good, it's easy to find specialty items, and they keep the lines pretty short even when it's busy. Please, someone from Kroger, read this and fix the inventory issues because there is no way I'm going to the Kroger over by Lowe's... that place is bedlam. read more

I will always go to this Kroger over the Lombardy one for many reasons. 1. Larger selection of natural foods 2. Better crowd 3. Employees are much nicer (but not super nice haha) Only problem is they don't really stay on top of stocking. This is one of the best Kroger's in Richmond (I agree with other reviewers). I occasionally will by past other Kroger's to grocery shop at this location. This Kroger is modern. I really like the layout of the grocery store. I never encounter really long lines even if the stores busy (Most lanes are open). The customer service is usually good. Customer service: Rude/Ineffective/Non-existent or any combination thereof. For umpteenth time came home to find out a purchased item was never packed. The receipt shoes I paid for it. Tried calling store to speak to customer service. 3 times someone picked up phone and put me on hold without saying a word. Twice the line started to ring again but no one ever picked up. The third time someone picked up and HUNG UP, again without saying a word. Fourth & 5th times I got someone in the floral department and asked them to find the store manager. Twice, the nice gentleman went upstairs to the managers office to get someone to speak to me. Twice the phone rang forever and was was never picked up. WTF? Is the store on fire? If not, what exactly is their problem? On top of that, there is no customer service option in their phone menu. After this experience, I think I understand why that is. Well the 6th time was the charm. Someone in the meat department immediately found a manager to speak with me. He couldn't have been nicer or more apologetic and promised to speak to his customer service staff. He offered me double the money back on the missing item which I appreciated. Then he offered to have the item delivered to my house! Now THAT is customer service. I politely declined. It's 4th of July eve and hotter than heck out. We'll be having tuna salad sandwiches for dinner instead of tuna steak. Without the help of the store manager, I'd probably take my business to Publix. If something like this happens again, I probably will. read more

I seriously visit this kroger at least once a day. There is always something I forget to pick up on my last trip. The employees are friendly and the store is well organized. This is one of my favorite Kroger's in the Richmond area. This location was remodeled a while back ago. It's really big and the isles are wide enough to accommodate a lot of people. When I was living on campus at VCU, this was my go-to Kroger. Sure I had to drive a bit to Carytown, but it was definitely much better than going to the Kroger at Lombardy and Broad. I always felt relaxed when I did my grocery shopping here. I also felt that this place was well stocked and that it was easy for me to find the things that I needed to buy. The staff here seems really nice and helpful. The place didn't feel not smell dirty at all. The parking lot can get crowded, but you'll always manage to find a spot. There's a seating area here where you can eat your food. This is one of the biggest Kroger's in Richmond, aside from the one at Short Pump and the Kroger Marketplace at Midlothian and Chippenham. read more

The management here does not know how to safeguard their employees or customers' health from the coronavirus. The aisles were jammed in both directions. An employee in their pharmacy aisle was coughing (he sounded really sick!) without covering his mouth, some people were too close in the checkout line and all people were jammed together in self checkout. They could easily fix this if they closed the middle checkout stations to allow for six feet between customers. It was clear the management in this Kroger has no direction from the corporate level about putting safeguards in place or maybe they have guidelines but aren't following them. I hear some stores are now limiting customer numbers and implementing one way aisles but not this store. I won't come back to this story even though it's in the neighborhood. Instead, I'll seek out a store that takes the health of their employees and customers seriously. read more

If you want a large, clean grocery store, this is a good one to try. I've been going to Kroger for a few years now and while I don't have any huge complaints, I find my experiences to be inconsistent. Most days the organic veggie section seems sparse - however, the staff is usually very helpful in pulling veggies out of the back if you ask. One thing I noticed during the holidays is that everyone that asked if I needed help (which is so super sweet) followed up by saying their name and that they'd like me to give them a review on line as it was raise time. I have mixed feelings about this since I truly want to help, but it felt awkward. The other day I forgot my recycle bags and just wanted paper (not plastic) bags. The cashier-who definitely had her mind on something other than quickly checking us out -said they had run out of paper bags.... maybe they are stocked in the back with the veggies?? On a positive note - I've just started using their app and am super excited by the fact that I can now shop online and just drive over to pick up the groceries! read more

Of all the Krogers in the immediate downtown area, I think this one is the nicest. It has the largest selection, is the cleanest and usually the fastest checkout. Mind you the parking lot is almost always packed, but it never seems too crazy busy inside. This kroger also has the best produce selection of the downtown Ks. However, it still seems they are randomly out of a lot of vegetables that I want. I don't eat meat, and eat quite a bit of veggies & this seems to be my constant nightmare no matter where I go grocery shopping. I always feel like its a miracle when one store has all the veggies I set out to get. This Korger also has a decent vegetarian/vegan isle and carries some specialty items that its hard to find at other stores downtown (vegenaise etc). When I do have time, I prefer grocery shopping here over some other the other stores closer to shockoe bottom. read more

I have two issues with this Kroger. The first is that they let anyone coming to Carytown park there so the lot is always packed. The second is the meat case. I've had to return most of the chicken I have every purchased because it had been frozen when it was supposed to be fresh or it was puffed up because of bacteria growing in the container. The funny thing is that when I've complained about the chicken obviously having been previously frozen, I was assured that this doesn't happen. I've given them the benefit of the doubt because it could be an distributor issue, but when I went back to the meat case, most of the chicken out was partially frozen. If you've ever had rubbery chicken it's because it was frozen, thawed and then frozen again. You can't do that. read more

Okay so I patronize this Kroger EVERYDAY.I buy 4 rock stars and a pack of Newport's every single day.as I was waiting for my gf to come out the store a man with the name "Sanka" who's employed here comes up to me as I'm sitting in a wooden chair(with no cloth near) and proceeds to screem that I need to put my ciggerette,when I was legitimately considering buying the chair.it had a sign say last one in store,he proceeded to scream at me and say it was sold.by this time I put my ciggerette out in my hand out of fear.he is still yelling at me about the ciggerette long after its out and stared at me like he wanted to fight trying to aggress me on my way out."as i was driving away i could hear him say "d*mn right you better fu*k off"this is unacceptable.I would like to know what action is going to be taken. read more

Why visit this Kroger when Martin's and Ellwood Thomson's are in walking distance? Surely, the rude ol hag with a greasy gray ponytail at the self check out isn't a good enough reason. When the self check out malfunctioned she refused to offer assistance instead she just stood idly at the front of the store and played on her phone. A quick trip to the store turned into an extended affair. I'd expect that kind of service at Wal-Mart but was shocked to see it at Kroger. This store is gigantic, so you'd probably assume they have a pretty great selection. Well, you'd be wrong. Sure, they have all thousand flavors of Gatorade, but I've been here more than once when they had literally no potatoes or bananas. What kind of grocery store runs out of potatoes?! I've never once been able to leave this store with everything I came for, and I'm not talking about obscure items, either. I have been a customer of this particular Kroger since 2004. They always have a great selection of produce, fast check out lines and the staff has always been friendly. I am typically a very amiable person. However, my last experience at Kroger left me with a bad taste in my mouth. My friend, his 15 year old daughter and myself went to Kroger to buy some ready made sandwiches, water and a bottle of wine for a 1920s picnic we were attending. We walk up to the self checkout lanes together and then use two different machines to purchase our lunch. I chose to purchase the bottle of wine and when I went to show my ID to the attendant she informed me she needed to see all of our ID's. I told her my friends daughter was a minor and wanted to know if she needed to see her ID as well. She then informed me that Kroger would not sell me the bottle of wine because I was in the company of a minor. I was a bit confused as I always purchase wine and beer from them during my grocery runs in the company of friends, minors and parents and never have they asked to see everyone's IDs or refused to sell me alcohol. She said she would get the manager for me. I wait a few minutes and the manager informs me of the same policy. I asked her why the policy was in place and she replied it's safety "for all the college kids and y'know." A little irritated, I replied, this man is her father and what if I were her mother? You still would not sell us alcohol then? I then asked her to look at my ID as I was the sole purchaser of the bottle and she refused. The manager made me feel like a jacka** and I felt incredibly embarrassed. I am well above the legal drinking age, as is my friend and I would never consider giving alcohol to a minor much less, my own friends daughter. I understand Kroger is trying to protect itself and its customers but if the manager had even agreed to look at our IDs she would have seen our birthdates and would have known we are not these so called "college kids." We then crossed the street to Martin's Grocery and had no issues whatsoever. read more

I don't understand all the bad reviews. I just have to write because I don't agree with them. I'm new to Richmond and I've been trying all the grocery stores in my neighborhood. Kroger was the third one I tried and I haven't gone back to the other two because I like Kroger so much. I like that they have nice looking organic vegetables. And their regular price for Kombucha is about 50 cents less than the other stores. Their cheese department has all the cheeses I like. And the staff are so happy to help you figure out a good cheese or find one from a particular country. And they will cut you a smaller chunk than what is displayed. Kroger even has the preservative free flu shots. Other places don't. They try really hard to please their customers and I am so appreciative. I agree about being approached by people who want money. And it bothers me that they know where I park. So, I do worry about my car when I'm in the store. I don't shop on weekends, because that whole area is a mad house. read more

I went into this Kroger for a bottle of white wine to soothe my headache. I selected my bottle after a brief period of browsing, and proceeded to the express checkout. What was going to be a fine, 4 star shopping trip took an unexpected turn south when the rude and authoritarian Nazi Camp Overseer, Ruthann, barked a reprehensible and brutal order at myself and my family. Apparently, there are strict rules for how you line up to a self checkout, and unbeknownst to me, it was a heinous violation of the peace and order of the Kroger to line up for the one I wanted to use. No - I simply HAD to use a general queue that feeds into all the sub-lines at once despite the person checking out in front of me just seconds away from finishing her payment at the electronic machine. The joke is on this lonely, soulless corporate slave, as she watched self checkout terminal clear the moment she hobbled away. Her dream of a utopian uniformity dissolved as I triumphantly swiped my bottle over the scanner. I triple bagged the bottle. Kroger has excellent paper bags. read more

Absolutely the worst grocery store. I'm so sad that it is also the closest one to where I live. The worst part of the experience is dealing with the check out staff. I would never buy seafood here, as the smell in this area clearly indicates the fish is bad. Just look at the display case. The seafood is displayed above the ice and is sold warm.
